Short Vort – Toras Chaim
The Torah of life
Vayikra 1:1 “And he called to Moshe…”
The Midrash comments that a talmid chacham who lacks derech eretz is less
than a carcass. The Midrash proves this point from Moshe who did not enter
the tent of meeting until he was called. Why is this talmid chacham com-
pared to carcass? Rav Aharon Kotler z”l explained that if one does not act
with derech eretz, because If a person is not consistent internally with the
Torah that he has learned, he is an empty vessel – a dead container.
Lesson: Live what you learn
Get real with God
Vayikra 2:11 “All sourdough and honey cannot be offered as a sacrifice”
Why are sourdough and honey forbidden to be brought in a Mincha offer-
ing? These ingredients are symbolic of the yetzer hora. Sourdough causes
things to puff up in the way arrogance cause a person to feel superior. Hon-
ey makes things that do not taste good seem sweet.
Lesson: Don’t be arrogant. Be real and authentic.
Robbing Hood
Vayikra 1:2 When a man shall offer a sacrifice…..
Rashi comments that the use of the word “Adam” for “man” in the pasuk,
reminds us that just as Adam did not bring a Korban from things that were
stolen, so too, we should be careful not to bring a korban from things that
are stolen. This prompts a question at the comparison. Adam owned every-
thing. It would have been impossible for him to steal anything. Chofetz
Chaim explained that we need to be as sure as Adam was that we have not
stolen and therefore be constantly be on the alert to the possibility that we
have misappropriated from others or from HaShem.
Lesson: Make sure that you are not stealing (money, time, etc.) from others
or from HaShem!
Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Cohen

VIRTUAL COMMUNITY SHUL
With HaShem’s help and everyone else’s cooperation we have successfully set up online davening and learning programs through ZOOM. This is an application which can be downloaded on your smartphone or laptop. In order to join a ZOOM meeting, you must click “join meeting” and use the specific ZOOM ID number for that meeting. Our ID number(s) are listed on the schedule which is located on the back of this bulletin, which we will now send out weekly. Our next goal is to make recordings of these classes available for those who would like to listen at a more convenient time.
Due to recent events, the community watsapp has become a place to help support, encourage, share, and ask for help. We want to keep this platform open to allow anyone who wants to make such a post there. However we want to give you the opportunity to join our second chat, which will only have admin posting and essential information regarding shul events, clas-ses, and times. You can also mute the notifications on either chats, if you want to stay a part of both but don’t want the constant buzz or ding of notifications. If you would like to be added to either of the community shul watsapp chats, please email me at [email protected] with your phone number.
Thank you for all your help and patience! It is inspiring to see what the community shul has “virtually” built.
B’virkas shmiras hanefesh v’haguf!

TORAH ETHICS—A RISKY BUSINESS
Q. Reuven organized a fund raiser for a widow and her six orphaned children in his
town. The campaign was successful, and over $100,000 was raised. A very prominent
and successful businessman with a sterling reputation approached Reuven and offered
to provide a guaranteed 20% return on the funds on behalf of the widow and her chil-
dren, if Reuven would invest the funds with him. Reuven agreed. The businessman
paid the dividends in a timely manner for six months, but unfortunately went bankrupt
after that, and the entire sum was lost. Does Reuven have any responsibility to replace
the funds?
A. Lending or investing funds earmarked for charity without securing the transaction
with collateral that can be used to collect from in case the transaction is defaulted, is
considered as if the trustee personally damaged the people for whom it was intended.
So, Reuven must reimburse the full amount that he had collected and then lost from
his private funds, unless the widow and orphans (upon becoming adults) explicitly
forgive his obligation to them. However, Reuven is permitted to deduct the dividends
paid during the six months that the widow had received from the total amount owed.
MAOS CHITIM
Dear Community Member,
While we have Baruch HaShem successfully transferred our operations, learning, and davening to the internet (via zoom), there are aspects of our shul life that will no longer be functioning until this current danger has passed. We will not have kiddush and seudah shlishis or Shabbos meal hospi-tality for the next few weeks and possibly months ahead. This will be a sig-nificant hardship for some members of our community, who cannot afford to have Shabbos lunch or dinner, and who normally attend these events. In addition, since we are being told to avoid inviting others for Shabbos/Pesach to maintain the social distancing, they will not be able to come to our homes for a while. With this in mind, we are encouraging people to sponsor part or all of our (non-) kiddush and (non-) seudah shlishis, so that these people have what to eat for the next few weeks and over Pesach. Since we are not going to incur any hard costs for the shul, we will pass all the funds on to those who need financial help now and for Pesach.
Wishing everyone a bri’us hanefesh v’haguf,
Rabbi Moshe Cohen
