They will also end the season with 10 straight at home, but over 18 days. Tech played 12 straight in Blacksburg last year, going 9-3 in that span. They have started this home stand 4-1. Hokies past century milestones: Senior Michael Seaborn has now started 103 consecutive games at second base. The last time Seaborn was not starting at second was March 22, 2009. He also just passed the 100-RBI plateau, and now has 104, as did shortstop Tim Smalling (106), and junior starter Marc Zecchino went over 100 innings pitched for his career, now with 102. Center fielder Tony Balisteri is one start and nine hits shy of 100. Power surge: Virginia Tech opened its 118th season of baseball at home in firework fashion. Balisteri and Smalling opened with back-to-back jacks in the bottom of the first and after Seaborn drew a walk, Andrew Rash belted a two-run shot. In all, the Hokies blasted seven home runs in the game - a 17-9 victory over Niagara - and 13 in the four- game series. Just two weeks into the season, Tech’s seven in that game leads all but two ACC teams overall output and its 16 total is seven more than Wake Forest’s nine. Balisteri, Rash and Smalling are all tied for the conference lead with three home runs, while Chris Kay’s two is tied for fourth with six others. Tech success at home: Since 1989, when the Hokies began playing at English Field, they are 18-5 all-time in home openers including its 17-9 win over Niagara last Friday. Tech is 371-184-3 in 22 seasons at English Field and have won 58 games at home over the past three seasons, just under 20 per season. They have four already this year. The series vs. Bryant: The four-game series will more than double the history of the two teams, as the Bulldogs hold a 1-2 all-time record. Against current Northeast Conference schools, the Hokies are 10-5 with winning records against Long Island (6-2) and Central Connecticut State (3-0), while dropping their lone game against Mount St. Mary’s. • VIRGINIA TECH BASEBALLA number of new faces: Thanks to a school record eight Hokies selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft last June (one player decided to return to Blacksburg), Virginia Tech started six players with less than 20 starts at their position in the season opener. Five positions – third base, center field, right field, designated hitter and catcher – had zero starts at their position as a Hokie in 2010, and Tech had lost its entire weekend starting rotation. Despite the challenges that faced the team on opening weekend, Tech posted a 3-1 start to their season, bettering last year’s 2-2 start.

Strong Points: On the other hand, the middle infield and its bullpen are the 2011 strengths for Tech, as second baseman Michael Seaborn and shortstop Tim Smalling combined for 306 starts in their collegiate careers entering 2011. Brandon Fisher, Jake Joyce, Ronnie Shaban and Sean McDermott combined to pitch almost 70 innings in 52 appearances with a 4-1 record and 60 strikeouts.

Double-Play Duo: Seaborn and Smalling have more in common than just the name on their uniform. They were born on the same day – October 14, 1987 – separated by 745 miles (Smalling in Clifton, N.J. and Seaborn in Atlanta, Ga.). Each started their college days at SEC schools (Arkansas and Kentucky, respectively). The seniors have started at least 150 collegiate games and, last season ranked in the top 15 in assists (Seaborn, ninth, 163 and Smalling, 13th, 152) in the ACC, while turning 49 double plays.

Home Cooking: Of the five ACC teams that received first-place votes in the preseason coaches’ poll, all but Miami will be visiting Blacksburg this season, where the Hokies have increased its home-field advantage the last two years. During the 2009 and 2010 seasons, Tech was 42-18 at home and won 17 conference games, more than the prior four years combined (13).

On these dates: Here is what the Hokies have done on these dates in their program’s prior 117 seasons in its history. Mar 4: 10-10-1 all-time Last game 2007, 5-1 in last six in Blacksburg, have played four doubleheaders (1-1-2). Mar 5: 13-10 all-time Have won 3 straight, 5-1 in last six, 4-4 overall at home. Mar 6: 12-7-1 all-time Have won 3 straight , 8-1-1 at home, only loss was a 3-2 decision to ETSU in 1990.

19 Ways: Head Coach Pete Hughes announced the creation of the “19 Ways” program, a challenge to his baseball team this academic year is to find 19 ways to make a difference. The “19 Ways” program is the product of Hughes’ inspiration, and he wears No. 19 for the Hokies.

“To whom much is given, much is expected,” said Hughes. “We are expected to take part on 19 different occasions to have a positive effect on someone or some organization during this school year.”

The number 19 was the favorite number of Coach Hughes’ mother, the late Alice Hughes. “My mother spent a lifetime helping everyone everyday and specifically the elderly and the ill,” added Hughes. “She was the ultimate helper.”

Coach Hughes is encouraging members of the community to send suggestions (via email to [email protected]) on how the Hokie baseball team can help individuals or organizations. Below are the “Ways” Tech players have been involved with so far.

1. Herma’s Readers Book Collection2. Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Bracelet Sales3. Shave for the Brave - in conjunction with Childhood Cancer
