• 1pm-1:30pm Scott Barrett, Assistant Profes-sor VT: Overview of US Log Truck Crashes. This will be an overview of a recent Virginia Tech graduate student project that focused on log truck crashes across the United States. This study included characteristics of log truck crashes and differences by region as well as a comparison of log trucks to other cargo body types.

• 1:30pm-2:30pm Stephen Setliff, Setliff Law: Legal Challenges in Your Business. Steve’s presentation is on analyzing severe trucking accidents from a lawyer’s perspective. It is designed to give the members highlights of the positions taken by both plaintiff’s attor-neys and defense attorney’s in the event of a traumatic accident. This will give the mem-bers insight into what to do in the event of a traumatic accident and how the litigation is likely to play out.

• 3pm-3:40pm Paul Haney, Consultant Forester: Seeing Forests thru Drones & Roads by Dash Cams. This presentation covers the top applications where drones serve as a revolutionary tool for the forest industry including: client education, forest manage-ment planning and execution, documenting actions, as well as detecting and managing threats such as pests, diseases and forest fires. This discussion focuses on the growing use of a dash cam video by trucking compa-nies and how they can be used to: protect the company from false claims, make drivers more accountable and create an incentive to resolve legitimate cases early where drivers are clearly at fault.

• 3:40pm-4:20pm Rob Archibald, Project Engineer: Telematics Guide & Trends for Forestry. Telematics technology is used to extract useful information from many types of machines. This presentation contains an overview of a typical telematics system including some pros/cons of the technology as applied to forestry machines. The remain-der of the presentation references an indus-try survey, data processing trends, and practical directions applied to systems for the future.

• 4:20pm-5pm Jerry Oaks & Eddie Glover: Working Around Gas Pipe Lines. This presen-tation focuses on the importance of commu-nication when working near or across pipe-lines. Speakers will make clear the difference a (811) one – call ticket will make to your business.

• This is Forestry Mutual’s most prestigious award. Mr. Pittman served from 1971-1984 and was a strong proponent of Safety Training & Education and the use of Personal Protective Equipment. This safety award recognizes businesses that show a genuine concern for the safety of their workers by going beyond the minimum safety require-ments to ensure a safe and productive workplace.

SpeakersROB ARCHIBALD is a P. Eng. Mechanical Engineer and currently leader of the Tigercat telematics development team in Paris, Ontario, Canada. Rob has a forestry machinery background with Tigercat Industries since 2011, Timberjack & John Deere for eleven years, and finally other truck and mobile equipment for twelve years. Rob has designed components and systems, tested, and supported a variety of forestry machines including feller bunchers, skidders,

and log loaders. Prior to telematics, he developed the new cab for the 800 series Tigercat track feller bunchers and track harvesters. In the past, he has been deeply involved in product development, new product planning, and managed two different machinery production lines.

SHAWN BAKER is the Vice President of Research at Forisk Consulting. In this role, he leads Forisk’s research on the forest industry with a focus on harvesting and transportation costs, logging capacity trends, and forest technology. Dr. Baker has over 15 years of forestry and operations research experience. Prior to joining Forisk, Shawn conducted forest operations research with the Center for Forest Business at the University of Georgia. Previously, he was the coordinator

for the Virginia Forest Landowner Education Program. Shawn earned Bachelor’s and Mas-ter’s degrees in industrial forestry operations from Virginia Tech and a PhD in Forestry from the University of Georgia

SCOTT BARRETT, Ph.D is an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in Forest Operations in the Virginia Tech Department of Forest Resources and En-vironmental Conservation. He has been involved in research projects related to biomass utilization, implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the protection of water quality, and recently completed a research project focused on log truck crashes. He also serves as the coordinator for the Virginia

SHARP logger program (www.SHARPlogger.vt.edu) which is Virginia’s SFI logger training program and has over 1300 individuals that are active in the program. He has worked at Virginia Tech since 2002 as the Coordinator for the VA SHARP Logger Program. Scott re-ceived his degrees in Forestry from VA Tech. He received a B.S. in Forestry in 1998, an M.S. in Forest Operations in 2001, and a Ph.D. in Forest Operations in 2013.

KEITH S. BIGGS graduated in 1978 from East Carolina University with a BS Degree in Industrial Technology. He began working with Hewitt, Coleman & Associates as a Field Representative and was assigned to work with the North Carolina Forestry Association Self Insurers Fund. In 1986 he started with North Carolina Forestry Association Self Insurers Fund, now known as Forestry Mu-tual, as a Field Representative. In 1988 he assumed the role of Billing Manager

when the Fund decided to take another function in-house. In 1990, Biggs became the Operations Manager and then in 1994 became the Assistant Executive Director. In March of 1997 he became the Executive Director and in 1999, when the Fund converted to a Mutual, was named the President of Forestry Mutual Insurance Company. In 2001 Forestry Mutual created a wholly owned commercial lines insurance agency now known as FMIC Agency Inc. and Biggs was named the President of the agency. He serves on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Forestry Association, Carolina Loggers Association and Forest Re-sources Association and on the Advisory Board for the American Loggers Association.

ROB FARRELL was appointed State Forester of Virginia by Governor Ralph Northam in January 2018. Prior to this he served as the Deputy State Forest-er for the past five years. Rob joined the Department of Forestry as the Area Forester for Gloucester and Mathews Counties in 2000. In 2007 he moved to the DOF headquarters in Charlottesville as the director of the new forestland conservation program. Prior to the DOF, Rob worked as an arborist and urban

forester in Maryland and Virginia. He is a Certified Arborist and has a B.S. and M.S. in For-estry from Virginia Tech.

EDDIE GLOVER graduated Appomattox County High School in 1993. Eddie began his career with Archer Creek Intermet Foundry the summer of 1993 at which he worked in various departments along with completing the Main-tenance Apprenticeship Program. In 2000 he went to work for Greif Brothers Riverville Mill in Amherst Va. Eddie joined Williams Gas Pipeline in Appomattox Va. November of 2005. His job duties consisted of general plant maintenance

of the Cooper-Bessemer 2 Stroke natural gas burn engines with integral reciprocating compressors which compress the natural gas to the next station on the main line. In his 13 year tenure with Williams Gas Pipeline he has held the roles of Operations Technician which he advanced to Maintenance lead and is currently the Operations Supervisor for the facility. Eddie lives in Appomattox, Virginia with his wife Dana and their two children Hollis 10 and Beckham 5. They enjoy farming, camping along with other outdoor activities.

PAUL HANEY is president and CEO of Environmental Timber Management, LLC. He is a 1988 graduate of Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Forestry & Wildlife Management. After beginning his career in consulting forester in 1989, Paul founded Environmental Timber Management in 1993 with a focus on proving a unique combination of exceptional customer service, strategic technical ex-pertise and strategic vision. Within his organization, Paul has concentrated his

efforts on achieving each landowner’s specific objectives through the implementation of sound and sustainable forestry practices. Over the course of his career, Paul has developed a diverse forestry background including extensive experience in private land utilization planning, view shed development and protection. Paul has also provided landowners with technical expertise in planning and design for a variety of conservation activities. His client base is comprised of a diverse base of both private and commercial forest landowners in Virginia and his consulting work has fostered close working relationships with many mem-bers of the forestry community including wood suppliers, loggers, landowners, Virginia Dept of Forestry research personnel and county foresters. Paul’s professional involvement in the forestry industry includes over thirty years of membership in the Skyline Chapter of the Society of American Foresters, the Virginia Forestry Association and the Association of Consulting Foresters. Paul has served on both local and national committees for the ACF, as a member of The Montpelier Foundation’s Natural Resources Committee, the VFA’s Board of Directors, Albemarle County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, and the Albemarle Coun-ty Storm Water Utility Committee. In his personal life, Paul manages over three hundred acres of family-owned timber interests, is an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He has been a career-long advocate for community education of forestry best practices and sustainable forest management for the benefit of generations to come.

JERRY OAKES graduated from the electrical/electronics program at Danville Community College in 1986, after which he began his career as a controls tech-nician in the textile industry. In 1995, he went to work for Goodyear Tire and Rubber as an electrician, later moving to a position as a controls tech. Jerry joined Williams Gas Pipeline in Chatham, Virginia in 2001. Initially, he was re-sponsible for maintenance and diagnostics of the 2-stroke combustion engines

and compressors which move natural gas. In his 16-year tenure with Williams Gas, Jerry has advanced from technician to Automation Specialist to his current position as Operations Supervisor. Jerry lives in Callands, Virginia with his wife, Leslie, and their two children, Lau-ren and Justin.

BETTINA RING was appointed by Governor Ralph S. Northam in 2018 to serve as the fourth Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry for the Commonwealth of Virginia. In this capacity, she supports the Governor’s mission of building a strong Virginia economy in agriculture and forestry, two of Virginia’s largest private industries, while also protecting the environment. Prior to her appoint-ment as Secretary, Ring was appointed by former Governor Terry McAuliffe to

serve as the seventh State Forester of the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF). During her term leading the agency, Ring secured $27 million in funding for emergency response equipment used to fight forest fires and to assist localities and other state agencies. A Virginia native, Ring began her career with VDOF and held a number of leadership posi-tions, including deputy state forester, during her 18 years with the agency. Prior to VDOF, Bettina was the senior vice president of family forests at the American Forest Foundation, a position responsible for overseeing the American Tree Farm System – the largest and oldest sustainable woodland program in America. She served on the federal Forest Resource Coordinating Committee, which provides direction within the U.S. Department of Agricul-ture and with the private sector to effectively address national priorities for private forest management. Bettina has also served as executive director of the Bay Area Open Space Council in San Francisco and was the executive director of the Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts. She holds a B.S. Degree in Forestry and Wildlife from Virginia Tech and a Masters of Business Administration from James Madison University.

STEPHEN SETLIFF represents clients in complex litigation at the trial and appellate level in state and federal courts across the eastern United States. His multifaceted trial practice includes representation of clients across a broad array of industries, with a focus on transportation companies, including rail-roads, trucking and bus companies, in claims of traumatic injury by employees and non-employees. His railroad practice includes defense of Federal Employ-

ers Liability Act (FELA) claims, crossing accidents, trespasser claims and property damage claims. Mr. Setliff also defends railroads against FELA claims by employees allegedly injured as a result of occupational workplace hazards, including hearing loss, repetitive stress and exposure to asbestos, silica, diesel fumes, soaps, solvents and other chemical fumes. Ad-ditionally, he is trial counsel to Class I and Class III railroads in employment claims arising under the Federal Railroad Safety Act (FRSA). In addition to the railroads, he represents the nation’s largest passenger rail carrier. Mr. Setliff is a member of the General Counsel Com-mittee of the American Shortline and Regional Railroad Association, the National Associa-tion of Railroad Trial Counsel (NARTC) and the Virginia Railroad Association. Mr. Setliff also represents trucking companies, their insurers and their drivers in a wide variety of claims, including catastrophic personal injury, property damage, and toxic cleanup. He also han-dles workers’ compensation claims, negotiating, drafting and enforcement of commercial

agreements, including brokerage and independent contractor agreements, traffic citations including felony charges, and employment claims under the Surface Transportation Assis-tance Act (STAA). His practice covers the gamut of trucking litigation, from first scene acci-dent investigation to effectively and efficiently trying cases to verdict. He serves as General Counsel to the Virginia Trucking Association and is an active member of the Virginia Movers and Warehousemen Association, the Maryland Motor Truck Association, the Trucking Indus-try Defense Association, the American Moving and Storage Association, the International Association of Movers, The National Truck and Heavy Equipment Claims Council, and the Virginia Loggers Association. Mr. Setliff ’s trial practice extends beyond transportation law and includes representation of one of the nation’s largest utility companies in commercial litigation matters as well as claims of personal injury and property damage. He is also trial counsel for several national commercial property owners, landlords and management com-panies handling commercial landlord/tenant issues as well as personal injury and premis-es liability. In addition, Mr. Setliff is trial counsel for a wide variety of national commercial retailers in personal injury, premises liability and workers’ compensation claims.

ROSLYN TYLER was born in Greensville County on July 18, 1961 to Johnny and Gladys Cain. Her father was a logger and farmer in Southside Virginia for years prior to his employment at Georgia Pacific. Delegate Roslyn Cain Tyler was the first female elected to the Sussex County Board of Supervisors in 1984 at the age of 23 years while a student at Old Dominion University. She was elected as the first chairwoman of the Sussex County Board of Supervisors in 1990 and

served for a total of 11 years in local government. Delegate Roslyn Cain Tyler was elected in 2005 to represent the 75th District in the Virginia House of Delegates. She has served 13 years in the Virginia General Assembly representing part of Sussex, Southampton, Surry, Dinwiddie, Isle of Wight, Lunenburg County and the City of Franklin and all of Brunswick, Greensville and the City of Emporia. She serves on the committee of Education, Militia, Po-lice and Public Safety and the House of Appropriations. Additionally, she serves on the Joint Commission on Health, MLK Memorial Commission, Sportsman Caucus and the Center for Rural Virginia Board of Trustees. She has earned a B. S. Degree in Biology from Virginia State University, B. S. Degree in Physical Therapy from Old Dominion University, Master Degree in Special Education from Virginia State University, continued with Advanced Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University and awarded a Honorary Doctoral Degree from St. Paul College. She is married to the Honorable Rufus Tyler, Sr. They have four children, Rufus, Jr., Ronecia, Rosche’ and Rameka Tyler and 2 grandchildren Makenzie and Karter Tyler. Del-egate Tyler has been married for 36 years and resides in Sussex County. During her spare time she enjoys, cooking, cruising the Commonwealth, and touring historical sites, kaya-king and fishing in the Nottoway River on a hot summer day. She has been instrumental introducing and supporting legislation that has benefited the Virginia Loggers Association while working with the past Executive Director of the VA logger Association, Jim Mooney with increasing the truck weight limits on State highways. They traveled to Washington, D. C. during The National Loggers Conference advocating and educating congressmen and senators on the importance of the Logger industry and the national transportation legisla-tion. As a result of her advocacy for Loggers across the Commonwealth, she was awarded the Virginia Logger President Award. During the 2018 Session, Delegate Tyler and Delegate Terry Austin– Co-patron Legislation HB 125 Forest products, hauling; expands the defini-tion to included rough-sawn green lumber which passed both the House and Senate and signed into Law by Governor Ralph Northam on February 22, 2018.
