Vinten’s unique infinitely adjustable Perfect Balance makes the camera appear weightless in the hands of the camera operator.

Perfect Balance Perfectly Balanced Pan and Tilt Heads

Why is balance important?Imagine the scenario: a person holds a weight at shoulder height with their armbent and close to their body; the furtherthey extend their arm from their elbow, theharder it becomes to support the weight.

Why? The weight does not becomeheavier but the amount of effort (torque)required to support the weight increasesas the weight is moved further from theelbow (pivot point).

This explanation is also true for a camerathat is tilted. The further it is tilted fromthe horizontal, the more torque isrequired to prevent the camera falling.

This torque is produced by the pan andtilt head’s counterbalance system. If itdoes not match the camera weight andangle exactly the camera will either fallaway or return to centre.

Why is Perfect Balance the best solution?Most manufacturers offercounterbalance systems that cannotproduce the exact amount of torquerequired. Figure 1 shows that theamount of torque required as a result of tilting the camera has a precise but non-linear pattern. This means that the out of balance effect is mostprominent on heads manufactured with linear counterbalance systems.

Even where a manufacturer has includedcontinuously variable counterbalance, if itis only approximate the camera will not becompletely controlled throughout the tiltrange of the head (see Fig.2).

The Vinten Perfect Balance system iseasy to set and offers infinite adjustment,providing precisely the right amount oftorque necessary to counterbalance thecamera throughout the head’s tilt range.

Minimal effort is required to move thecamera; the camera operator can even gohands-free. Vinten’s infinite adjustmentallows exactly the right amount of torqueto be generated at whatever angle thecamera is positioned. Compensating forthe effect of gravity, Vinten’s PerfectBalance makes the camera appearweightless in the hands of the cameraoperator. And, as it balances perfectly thedrag control can be used for what it isintended to do: shot framing and control,rather than helping to balance the camera.

Vinten pedestals are used all over the world because Perfect Balance enables the operator to

concentrate on the shot and not on the pedestal.

Perfectly Balanced Pedestals

How to achieve 180˚ Perfect Balance in 4 simple steps:1. Slide the camera onto the head usingthe Vinten slide plate and position it sothat the camera’s centre of gravity sitsover the centre of the head.

2. Reduce the tilt friction to its minimum.

3. Tilt the camera both forward andback; if the camera is correctlypositioned it will either fall away from,or return to the horizontal at an evenrate either side of the head’s top deadcentre.

4. If the camera falls away from thecentre position, turn the PerfectBalance knob clockwise. If the camera springs back towards thecentre, turn the Perfect Balance knob anticlockwise.

Perfect Balance is achieved when the camera remains stationary in any tilted position.

Perfect Balance is an equallyimportant part of Vinten pedestals.

Why is balance important?In this context balance literally means the support offered by the pedestal to the camera/lens configuration.Without balance the camera would fallto the pedestal’s lowest point or rise tothe pedestal’s highest point making itimpossible to film.

Why is Perfect Balance the bestsolution?Non-perfect balance systems requirevariable effort throughout the stroke of the column and are therefore harderto use; the camera will have a tendencyto fall or rise at certain points, which,depending on its severity, can makesmooth movement and steady framingvirtually impossible.

Perfect Balance ensures that thepedestal column system consistentlyoffers the exact support required forthe camera operator to raise andlower the camera with minimal effort.

The Vision Ped Plus, Pro-Ped, Osprey,Quartz and Quattro ranges utiliseprecisely engineered and patentedbalance systems, providing smooth and controllable camera balance.Vinten’s Perfect Balance technologyensures that the pedestals can be moved effortlessly and once positionedwill stay put - whatever the weight of the camera configuration.

Drag Technology

Why is drag important?In order to control the camera, resistanceto movement (drag) is needed to preventovershooting, dampen out unwantedmovements and to make minoradjustment virtually impossible to detect.

Why is Vinten drag technology the best solution?Whilst drag is essential, it can have anegative effect if the system is poorlydesigned. All too often (see Fig.1) dragsystems are designed so that resistanceto movement increases proportionallywith the speed of pan or tilt. Where this is the case, whip pan becomesimpossible and minute framingadjustments difficult to achieve.

Vinten drag systems are designed to offercomplete camera control at any level ofmovement. Figure 1 shows how Vintendrag systems provide a steep increase infriction at the start of any movement. Thisensures that maximum control is gainedquickly: essential for slow moves and fineframing adjustments. As the movementspeed increases a shallower friction curveis created, enabling the pan and tilt headto remain light and easy to move whilstthe shot continues to be controlled.

If the action changes out of shot Vinten’spatented drag systems allow instant whip pan movement without any manualreduction of the drag. This is ideal forapplications such as sports coveragewhich require lower drag for following the close action and higher drag for longer shots.

Vinten pan and tilt heads also offer infinite, rather than stepped adjustment.This enables the camera operator to select the drag level that suits theirworking requirements, rather than a pre-determined level which may not.

without steps

� Instant whip pan without manual drag reduction

� Fast and repeatable set-up

� Illuminated drag controls [from Vision 100 upwards]

Vinten’s LF drag is an infinitelyadjustable friction system combinedwith a unique lubricant fluid, allowingfor fine adjustment of drag levels aswell as whip pan at any level of drag.LF Drag offers:

Versatile and extremely responsive, the Vision 3ASis a modern, ergonomic pan and tilt head providing the highest functionality for all professional video applications.

Vision 3AS

The Vision 3AS is ideal for today’sintermediate weight and highlyaccessorised professional camcorders.The pan and tilt head balances payloadsbetween 1.8 – 4.1 kg / 4.0 – 9 lbs with a centre of gravity of around 125 mm,handling the addition of interchangeablelenses, batteries and other adaptors and accessories with ease.

The infinitely adjustable Perfect Balancesystem allows just the right amount ofcounterbalance to be set, which isparticularly useful when reconfiguringthe camcorder set up. In addition thehead features Vinten’s LF dragtechnology, a Sideload system for rapidcamera attachment and a high contrastblue LED illuminated levelling bubble.

Pro-Ped Pedestal

The Pro-Ped lightweight pedestalcan be used for both studio and OBapplications.
