Transcript of Vintage faithful presence_2.19.17
“Faithful presence names the realitythat God is present in the world
and that (God) uses a peoplefaithful to (God’s) presence to make
(God) concrete and real amidthe world’s struggles and pain…(But) it doesn’t just happen.
We need practices that shape us to bea community of faithful presence.”
DAVID FITCH
Tangible exercises we engage in,not to earn the grace of God,
but to put ourselves in the positionto receive and experience the grace of God
as the Spirit works through themto form the character of Jesus in us,
both individually AND as a church family
SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES
ROMANS 10:13-15 “Everyone who calls on the
name of the Lord shall be saved.”But how are they to call on one in whom
they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard?
And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him
unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet
of those who bring good news!”
“I sinned, but God loves me and forgives me
because Jesus died for me, which meansI get to leave earth and live with God
in heaven forever, instead of burning in hell.”
WHAT THE GOSPEL IS NOT
1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4 “For I handed on to you
as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins
in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried,
and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures…”
Because of Jesus’ sacrificial deathand victory over sin he is the
rightful King of the universe, a reality proven by his resurrection-victory over death;he has made access to God’s presence possible
for all humanity AND sets God’s “creation project” back on track until it is completed at the final
resurrection and renewal of all things

ACTS 20:20-21I did not shrink from doing anything helpful,
proclaiming the message to you and teaching you publicly and from house to house,
as I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus.
WE PROCLAIM GOOD NEWS TO:THE ANGRY
That God is also angry at injustice,we can entrust vengeance to God
and God is working to set all things right

THE DEPRESSEDThat God loves them deeply,
that God is not shaken by or upset withtheir struggle, that their life has meaning
WE PROCLAIM GOOD NEWS TO:THE ASHAMED/GUILTY
That Jesus has taken their sin,has fully forgiven them and is
inviting them to receive freedom in him

LUKE 10:7-9Remain in the same house, eating and drinking
whatever they provide…Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town
and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them,
‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
WE LIVE OUT GOOD NEWS BY:CARING FOR THE HURTING/LONELY/SICK
Caring for the vulnerable isn’tin-and-of-itself “the gospel,” but its because of
the gospel that we’re compelled to act…

WE LIVE OUT GOOD NEWS BY:CHAMPIONING VALUE OF HUMAN LIFE
Seeking God’s best for children at all stages of their development, defending women
against sexual assault and domestic violence, declaring the truth that the lives of
black people matter…these things are notin-and-of-themselves “the gospel,” but its because of the gospel that
we’re compelled to act…

BENEDICTION (Mark 12)One of the scribes…asked him,
“Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is:
‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
There is no other commandment greater than these.”
