BUILDING THE FUTURE
Ever since man crept out of the caves and started to construct buildings he has been using mortar in some shape or form. The first break through came in the 20th century with the use of liquid bonding agents and the second more than 50 years ago with the development by WACKER of dry polymer binders – the dispersible powders. VINNAPAS® polymer powders were pioneer products in the area of drymix mortar technology.
VINNAPAS® revolutionized the world of
construction by introducing products
that had previously been unthinkable,
products with high mechanical strength
and excellent adhesive power.
VINNAPAS® polymer powders and
dispersions are found in five major fields
of application: tile adhesives and self-
leveling compounds, exterior insulation
and finish systems (EIFS), finish coat and
water proofing membranes such as
sealing slurries.
As well as having superior intrinsic
properties, VINNAPAS® polymer powders
and dispersions are so designed to
be formulated in highly sophisticated
construction products.
Further challenges are also on the
horizon: environmental compatibility,
healthy living, living closer together and
aesthetics – these are all aspects of
construction that we continue to work
on ensuring that we maintain our usual
high standards.
For ease of use, this brochure has been
divided into two sections. In the first
section you will find all you need to know
about VINNAPAS® polymer powders, and
in the second everything about
VINNAPAS® dispersions.

THE ADDITION OF TECHNOLOGY
VINNAPAS® polymer powders and dispersions enhance building materials with properties that include:
Excellent adhesion to a wide range of
substrates.
Flexibility – The long-term durability and
functionality of many systems depend on
their flexibility (or deformability). For floors
and walls laid with tiles, the mortar needs
to be sufficiently flexible to absorb the
stresses and loads occurring between
the tiles and substrate. And in exterior
insulation and finish systems, polymer
modification allows adhesives to
accommodate any movement between
insulation board and the substrate that
may occur with time.
High abrasion resistance ensures a
long life and good looking surfaces.
Improved workability allows for ease of
application even under a wide range of
climatic conditions e.g. longer open time.
The addition of VINNAPAS® polymer
powders increases your efficiency by
delivering you:
– Long-lasting products
– Longer Service Life
– Fast-drying mortars
– Thin-bed mortars

Picking the right product VINNAPAS® binders offer the broadest
product portfolio in the market for formu-
lating high-quality building materials with
precisely defined technical properties.
They permit the formulation of even dry,
ready-to-use or admix systems.
All products help to optimize adhesion
and flexibility, the individual product
classes offer additional properties,
such as neutral effect on rheology,
hydrophobicity, thixotropy, improved
leveling, and a superplasticizing effect.

GLOBAL NETWORKMEANS GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY
OUR MISSION
WACKER is a globally active company
that manufactures and sells chemical
products, and engages in intensive sci-
entific research. We are fully committed
to sustainable development, a principle
that is an integral part of our business
thinking and practices. We structure our
activities according to 8 Eco-Modules,
which cover subjects from manufacturing
efficiency to toxicity, which we will use as
indicators to create less of an overall
environmental footprint.
And when it comes to environmental
protection we believe prevention is
always better than cure which is why at
WACKER we focus more on prevention
than remedial measures. This process
begins as early as product development
and plant planning stages. It also means
that in accordance with the Responsible
Care® initiative, measures often go
beyond what is legally required. We’re
continually working on reducing energy
consumption and conserving resources
and keeping the public informed via our
annual community meetings at our
Nünchritz site and the Burghausen site’s
yearly environmental reports.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
When we develop new products or
optimize existing products we are always
thinking about their environmental impact
now and in the future. Green building
is a topic that is on everyone’s lips
and we are constantly working on more
sustainable products. For example
VINNAPAS® 828 ND – a well established
dispersion has been further developed
as it is now produced without the
addition of APEO, plasticizers and
solvents which helps our customers
to develop environmentally friendly
products.
And our commitment doesn't just
stop with our products – we recently
developed a PE bag for our polymer
powders that contains 40% less PE.
SMALLER FOOTPRINT
Many of our products help to reduce the
carbon footprint along the life cycle of
construction products. By suppling
VINNAPAS® polymer powders for exterior
insulation and finish systems (EIFS)
we help lower end-user heating costs,
while cutting greenhouse-gas emissions.
EIFS can reduce heating energy costs by
60% and cut the energy lost by
air-conditioners by as much as 72%.
We managed to reduce the specific
energy consumption in Burghausen by
~40% in the past 10 years and we will
continue to pursue a target of increasing
energy efficiency by 5% in all our facto-
ries worldwide.

THE POWER OF POWDER
Speed and reliability are important factors when architects and build-ing contractors are choosing building materials. A product should also be easy to use – facilitating the work at the job site.
When WACKER invented the polymer
binder in the form of a powder in 1957,
it became possible for the first time
to use a one-pack cement system. A
dry mortar is modified with VINNAPAS®
dispersible polymer powder in the
factory, and only needs to be mixed with
water on site. The result is a high-quality
polymer-modified cement mortar with
clearly defined properties.
Factory-premixed mortars can be
produced with the correct proportions of
cement, fillers, additives and VINNAPAS®
dispersible polymer powders. This elimi-
nates serious construction-site mixing
errors.
VINNAPAS® dispersible polymer
powders ensure good adhesion,
even to smooth, non-porous surfaces.
Dry-mix mortars modified with
VINNAPAS® polymer powders have
various advantages:
– Easy to transport and store
– The packaging is easy to dispose of
– Not at risk from bacterial growth
– Easy to use at the construction site
– Only water needs to be added

Tiles come in lots of different shapes and sizes. They can be heavy or light, porous or non- porous. VINNAPAS® polymer powders will ensure tiles adhere to differing substrates in a wide range of conditions.
Regardless of the type of tile being
used, the weakest point is the bond
between the tile and the substrate.
VINNAPAS® N polymer powders
eliminate this weakness by significantly
improving the bonding strength of the
adhesive between both the substrate
and the tile. They improve the workability

The finite energy resources of the world are slowly running out. And as the search for renewable sources continues, the cost of energy continues to rise. One of the most efficient ways to save energy in buildings is by thermal insulation. The better the insulation the lower the running costs
For insulation systems to function
properly they have to bond well to the
substrate. Adhesive mortar modified

STUCCO/PLASTERS – A GREAT FINISH STARTS HERE
As the exterior finish or skin of a building, exterior plasters perform two different functions. They have to look good and at the same time they must protect the substrate against weathering and moisture without seal-ing it - in effect allowing it to breath.
VINNAPAS® polymer powders are only
added to plasters in small amounts
but perform important functions. They
improve adhesion, enabling attachment
to smooth or non-absorbent substrates.
They allow plasters to be applied in very
thin and more economical layers.
Exterior plasters need to have good adhesion to the substrate while remaining flexible so as to prevent cracking. They have to have good water repellent properties and at the same time good drying characteristics.

DISPERSIONS – LIQUID ENGINEERING
Reliability and durability are importantfactors when architects and buildingcontractors are choosing buildingmaterials. VINNAPAS® dispersions are used in various high-performance construction materials.
They confer excellent adhesion,
cohesion, flexibility, hydrophobicity,
rheology and long-term stability.
You’ll find them in all sorts of primers,
exterior insulation and finish systems and
synthetic resin bound plasters and
renders, as well as mortar and concrete
admixtures in e.g. repair mortars and
water proofing membranes.
On the opposite page you can see the different areas in which our dispersions are used and on whichpage you can find the relevant information.
NEW PRODUCT CLASSES
VINNAPAS® products are consistently being updated and we’re regularly introducing new dispersions to the market. To ensure that you don’t get confused and can easily find the right dispersion for your needs, we’ve divided VINNAPAS® dispersions into Standard and Plus categories, where each product is named according to its specific characteristics.
The new naming system for our dispersions reflects product proper-ties and is highly analogous to the nomenclature of dispersion powders.
In future, the product name will consist of:
VINNAPAS® + 3 characters representing
chemical properties (polymer composi-
tion/flexibility) + 1 letter for the product
class + the letter “D” for dispersion.
Please refer to page 53 for details.
It is important to note that the oldnaming system will remain in place until September 1st 2011.

COMPOSITE TECHNOLOGY WITH OPTIMUM COMPOSITION
The new composite dispersions from
VINNAPAS® very cleverly combine
inorganic and organic components to
produce a product which allows colors to
remain bright and not fade on building
facades, thereby reducing the total
number of facade renovation cycles.
The core of the dispersions is made up
of inorganic silica particles (the basis of
quartz and glass) only a few nanometers
in size that are surrounded by organic
polymer particles.
Normally, if mineral particles are simply
mixed into an organic dispersion, the
particles can agglomerate during filming
and subsequently develop an uneven,
heterogeneous film. The organic shell
of the new composite dispersion now
prevents inorganic-particle agglomeration
during the film-forming process. Thus,
a homogeneous and stable film forms.
The special organic/inorganic combi-
nation also lends specific benefits
to the dispersion. The elastic, organic
components have conventional binder
properties – strong adhesion and
cohesion, good mechanical properties
and improved processability. The solid
mineral components, for their part,
have outstanding barrier properties,
reducing dirt pick-up, ensuring
long-lasting color shades and lowering
the risk of algae or mold formation.
Composite dispersions also feature
improved scratch and abrasion resis-
tance, high thermal stability, and optimal
thermal conductivity and water-vapor
permeability. Of particular note is their
improved flame-retardancy due to the
high non-flammable inorganic content.

EXTERIOR INSULATION AND FINISH SYSTEMS – CONTROLLING YOUR TEMPERATURE
Regardless of whether the building is being heated or cooled, thermal insu-lation offers the greatest potential for saving energy. External insulation and finish systems are among the most efficient ways to reduce a building's energy consumption. VINNAPAS® dispersions are polymer binders that enhance the adhesive and reinforcing mortars and compounds in exterior insulation and finish systems.
They are designed to selectively modify the properties of adhesive and embedding mortar and compound. For adhesive mortars and compounds, 2-components systems are usual, while in embedding mortars and compounds the dispersions can be used in ready-to-use as well as in 2-component systems. Our dispersions are versatile due to excellent compatibility with cement. VINNAPAS® dispersions
promote good adhesion to all sub-strates, are flexible enough to accom-modate differing expansion coefficients of the materials used, and therefore offer optimal durability. Since EIFS are constantly exposed to the weather, effective protection against water is essential. VINNAPAS® dispersions can be used to modify these systems, enabling them to withstand differing climatic conditions.

substances causing carbonation of the concrete cover, and of substances that corrode the steel reinforcement. The first step is to clean the surface, remove all the affected concrete and sandblast the steel bars if required. A primer is then applied, followed by a base mortar.
