KIONA VINEYARDS AND WINERY THE MYTHOLOGY SERIES IS A SIDE PROJECT OF JJ WILLIAMS AND KIONA VINEYARDS AND WINERY IN WASHINGTON’S RED MOUNTAIN AVA - JOHN WILLIAMS, CIRCA 1970. “This just might be a pretty damned good place to grow wine grapes.” RED MOUNTAIN FORGED VINEYARD PROFILE WINE PROFILE ESTATE RED MOUNTAIN FORTUNA In 1975 our family planted the first vineyard on Red Mountain, an area now known for producing some of the world’s most powerful, opulent wines of distinction. Kiona Vineyards’ wines tend to be traditionally blended and bottled; these limited edition Mythology Series projects afford us the opportunity to try new ideas. Blending old and new, Fortuna features components that had never previously been includ- ed in the same cuvée. The Cabernet component hails from the original Kiona Estate 1975 Old Block that pioneered the Red Mountain AVA, whereas the Carmenère and Malbec components come from the much younger (and much hyped) Heart of the Hill. Fortuna is a Red Mountain interpretation of the fantastic wines of Chile’s Central Valley. Carmenère and old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon bring substantial pyrazine influ- ence, but it’s balanced by the young, fresh, fruit-dominate Malbec component. Vertical blending allows us to find a fruit/savory balance that would be otherwise impossible. MYTHOLOGY STATISTICS Fortuna is a prominant figure in Roman mythology, often depicted blindfolded and holding a cornucopia. In the macro picture, she manifests chance, luck, and fate; Machia- velli insinuates that Fortuna rules one half of men’s fate, with the other half representing their free will. For our purposes, we focused on her Fortuna Annonaria aspect, connected to agriculture and the luck of the harvest.
