VHA’s work at the Capitol has reversed decades of unplanned, careless alterations to the state’s signature legislative spaces,

originally designed by Alfred Piquenard in the 1870s.

The work included the faithful restoration of interior details and materials, such as this wood door and stone trim. Exterior doors of wood, copper and glass were designed to last 100 years.

Philip Hamp, FAIA

Key Personnel

Alexander Krikhaar, AIA

In 1995 Philip Hamp partnered with John Vinci to form Vinci | Hamp Architects. Mr. Hamp received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1976 and a Masters of Architecture from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 1980. Mr. Hamp has over thirty years’ experience with the restoration of historic architecture, museum installations and the design of new buildings. His restoration work includes the Quadrangle Club at the University of Chicago, the Illinois State Capitol, the re-installation of the permanent collection galleries at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Henry Ford Museum and the University Club of Chicago. His new buildings include the Paine Art Center, Skokie Country Club and several private residences. Mr. Hamp has taught historic preservation at the University of Illinois - Chicago, is a board member of Landmarks Illinois and a past member of the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council. He was elected to the AIA College of Fellows in 2006 and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Alexander A. Krikhaar, AIA, is an architect and partner at Vinci | Hamp Architects, Inc. He received his M.Arch from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1994 and has practiced at VHA since that time. Mr. Krikhaar’s expertise includes new designs for private residences and institutions, museum and art installations and furniture design. In addition he has led several of VHA’s restoration projects, including the renovation of the Illinois House of Representative’s Chamber at the Illinois State Capitol (2007). Other notable projects include the Chicago hearing room for the Illinois General Assembly (2010), the Hodroff gallery for Chinese Export Porcelain at the Minneapolis Museum of Art (2006) and a penthouse residence and gallery for a Chicago art collector (2002 & 2010). Mr. Krikhaar serves on the Board of Directors for The Arts Club of Chicago.
