ThemeOn a large piece of land that has been released by areligious community, the challenge is to invent aresidential block with a landscaped grid, on the scaleof this neighbourhood to the north of the town, thatwill incorporate convivial public spaces andtypological innovations. The new block, as an"articulation" between the social housing areas of theBuers to the east and that of the individual houses tothe west, and the major amenities close by, mustbecome a new architectural and urban reference forVilleurbanne.

ConurbationThe commune of Villeurbanne's urbanisation isthe result of pressure from the industrialdevelopment and housing needs of GreaterLyon. Villeurbanne's identity is founded on thetown centre with the "sky-scraper district", amodern urban and architectural heritage fromthe 1930s, as well as its neighbourhood hubswhose morphologies vary widely. Today, themunicipality seeks a better link betweenneighbourhoods, the Doua university district tothe north, and the town centre to the south.

SiteThe Terrain des Sœurs which is to the north-eastof the town, and close to the suburbs of Lyon,belonged previously to a religious communitywhich had an important social role for theimmigrants that populated this neighbourhood inits beginnings. The site is at the junction of twoareas that contrast as much in terms of theirmorphologies as in terms of their socialoccupations. The fabric is mainly private housingand small businesses to the west (La SainteFamille) and small blocks of flats to the east (Les Buers).

ProgrammeOn the land that is now available, a housing block isto be created which contains a maximum of 300homes (for rent and for first time buyers), as well asfor craft industries, and small businesses. An urbangrid of convivial public spaces for the residents ofthe whole neighbourhood and a link between thedifferent sectors is to be created. Finally, theneighbourhood is to be incorporated into the greenzone which links it to the north, to the Feyssine parkand the Doua campus, as well as, to the east, theJonage canal.

Issuesfunctional : A solution must be found to link the area containing blocks ofsocial housing with that containing individual houses, while preserving theresidential intimacy which is so appreciated by the latter's inhabitants.

social : Social mix is to be encouraged by expanding the variety of homesavailable to cover students, the elderly who wish to stay in the area, theresidents of the neighbouring social housing district, and a whole newpopulation wishing to acquire quality housing.

perceptual : The proposal must suggest urban, architectural andlandscape instruments that will limit noise pollution from the ring road. Itmust also improve the urban and landscape elements of the interchangebetween the ring road and the Charles de Gaulle junction.
