Welcome to the Village Ventures Autumn/Winter 2009-2010 brochure – your guide to what’s on at a venue near you!

Village Ventures is the rural and community touring scheme for Nottinghamshire, featuring high quality professional dance, drama and music from the best in national and international touring companies and performers.

Shows are promoted in a wide range of community venues - all providing a very warm welcome.

Melissa Western Ella, Marilyn, Marlene & Me

A wild, fairytale performance spanning the worlds of jazz, cabaret and theatre.

Australian singer-actor Melissa Western whirls through the glamorous and often tragic lives of three twentieth century icons, Ella Fitzgerald, Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich in this unique and hugely entertaining show. Supported by Tnee, with his unique brand of musical comedy, Western plays out the dreams, hopes and disappointments these three women experienced in their climb to fame.

NTC Touring Theatre Whisky Galore

Scotch on the rocks, love in the air, mayhem masked by mischief all around.

NTC weave their own brand of theatrical magic in a new adaptation of Compton Mackenzie’s famous comic novel of life on a Hebridian Island. The SS Cabinet Minister heads for the rocks with its cargo of the finest scotch just in time to wash away the obstacles in True Love’s path…

An evening of sea salt and single malt in this version which sticks to the fabulous flavour of the original book.

An evening of blistering Eastern brass harmonies, high-energy rhythms and lots of spontaneous fun!

You Need Me How It Ended

A hauntingly intimate and powerful tale of love, expectations and regret.

Set in Wales during the Second World War Lillian meets Raymond, a French fighter pilot. A whirlwind romance is followed by marriage and the action is transported to France where desire turns to disappointment as Lillian tries to come to terms with loneliness and an alien culture, all under the disapproving eye of her new mother-in-law.

Natural Theatre Company A Night at the Bijou

1950s’ B movie Bride of the Monster gets the Natural treatment in this fabulous show where improvisation and flights of fancy collide with film and folklore.

Long forgotten cinematic devices such as ‘Wet-o-rama’ and ‘Feel-o-vision’ are brought chaotically back to life, along with beautifully observed characterisations and unexpected happenings, in a show which attempts to recreate the atmosphere of an evening in a ‘50s’ fleapit.

A trip down memory lane or a multimedia extravaganza? Either way expect a fantastically funny evening!

Two Gents Productions Two Gentlemen of Verona

From Verona to Milan, via Harare and Bulawayo, Valentine and Proteus, vie for the love of the same woman. When Valentine is banished, their friendship is threatened and only through disguise, deception and intrigue are they reconciled.

Using little to no props, a few items of clothing and a set that consists of no more than a trunk, the two actors bring a broad, loud and triumphantly energetic ‘township’ style to Shakespeare’s verse.

A soulful and engaging theatrical experience not to be missed!

Angus & Ross Theatre Company The Mystery of Irma Vep

An hysterical revival of the 1980s’ spoof of a Penny Dreadful.

The Mandacrest Estate is the home of Lord Edgar and Lady Enid. Lady Enid is Lord Edgar’s second wife, though he has yet to recover entirely from the passing of his first wife, Irma. The house staff, a maid named Jane Twisden and a swineherd named Nicodemus Underwood, have their own opinions of Lady Enid ….

Watch and wonder as two actors play all eight parts, and prepare for an hilarious evening!

Opera Dudes Mission: Improbable

A fantastic evening of Grand Opera, showstoppers, heart-rending ballads, classical piano, ridiculous impressions and slapstick humour, all on the same bill!

Music includes the great aria Vesti La Giubba from I Pagliacci, Neapolitan songs, Ivor Novello, Engelbert Humperdinck, Simon & Garfunkel along with Broadway and Swing favourites, all with an operatic twist. A stirring musical journey spanning six centuries, conjuring high dancehalls, low ballrooms and lamenting lovers.

With recorders, fiddle, crumhorns, guitar and bowed guitar, Horses Brawl are set to spellbind audiences with energetic and haunting performances of their latest album, a collection of pieces arranged and composed from fragments of ancient melodies, intertwined with raucous traditional folk music from England and Europe.

A wonderful celebration of traditional and contemporary jazz songs to ignite the spirit and warm the soul.

Barrett performs an entrancing tribute to some of the most beautiful and well-loved singers and song-writers including Ella Fitzgerald, Gershwin, Nina Simone, Peggy Lee, Norah Jones and Eva Cassidy, accompanied by wonderful jazz pianist Adam Biggs.

The perfect pre-Christmas treat for both adults and children in a double bill of music and storytelling.

Sergei Prokofiev’s wonderful children’s story of Peter, a young boy who goes hunting for the wolf, is magically brought to life by this accomplished duo in a marriage of violin, accordion and voice.

The second part of the evening features a selection of Russian folk and gypsy music, as well as classical favourites.

Sometimes the smallest things cause the biggest problems ….

It’s a hard life being a Handsome Prince, spending all your time looking for the perfect Princess to rescue. It’s no picnic being a Princess either, especially if you prefer climbing trees and fighting dragons to looking pretty and wearing big dresses.

Shoo Shoo BabyAn Entire History of Cabaret

This glamorous musical double act take a whistlestop tour of cabaret’s scandalous and illustrious past featuring music from Marilyn Monroe to The Velvet Underground and Eartha Kitt to Elvis.

Expertly assisted on the piano, the company gamely lead the audience through the revolutionary ferment of Gay Paree, the smoky subversion of Berlin to the Cockney singalongs of the London music hall, colourfully climaxing in a glittering tribute to the Rat Pack.

Reg MeurossDragonfly

An evening of storytelling, witty observations and song by this true English troubadour.

Accompanied by cellist, singer and ukulele player Bethany Porter, Reg Meuross presents his performing and songwriting talent with a collection of beautiful songs, telling the tales of the real Dick Turpin, the tragic story of the men executed in the Great War for ‘desertion’, along with songs about Elvis and artist Edward Hopper.

Chocks Away! Hold onto your seats in this hilarious and heart-stopping story of Alcock and Brown as they race to conquer the skies.

The two plucky British pioneers, Alcock, a dashing World War One figher pilot and Brown, a navigational genius with a gammy leg, are crammed into the tiny cockpit of their converted Vicker Vimy biplane made almost entirely of wood and canvas. Marvel at their daredevil antics, their battles with the elements and sheer adventurous spirit as they attempt to be the first to make a non-stop flight across the Atlantic.
