As Village Living celebrates its second

birthday, it seems fi tting to be wishing you goodbye and good luck on such a special occasion.

This month, I am offi cially handing over the magazine and

the editorship to my right-hand woman, Katie Downes, a talented writer, photographer and safe pair of hands who has plenty of new ideas to ensure the magazine continues to grow and be a great resource for the local community. I’m sure that she will enjoy getting to know you, and vice versa, just as much as I have. I am taking the opportunity to head off on a family adventure and will be reporting back on our travels over the coming months. I hope you will join with me in wishing Katie every success.

Melissa x

Hello and goodbye! It’s a time of big change here, in the month of our second birthday; founder and creator of Village Living is

handing over the reins to me, so it’s a big Hello! from me, please continue to send in your lovely letters and emails and let me know of anything going on you would like to read about in the magazine. Whatever you are doing, enjoy your October!

Mark Sallis’ Beeding & Bramber raced home to win the fi rst ever Mellor Tournament, winning both games by big margins in the end. a day that lifelong member John Barnes will never forget, making 42 and 26 runs, and stealing the show in the fi nal by taking a hat-trick with his slow pace bowling. Playing on the ground where Sussex CCC plays some games during the season, with former Sussex captain John Barclay presented the trophy to Mark Sallis. John Barnes didn’t get a man of the match award but a man of the tournament. Great day for him being at the club for 23 years – perfect! Pictures and words by: Richard Greenfi eld

West Dean was put on the festival map over the August Bank Holiday Weekend following the inaugural West Dean Festival. Festival-

goers gathered to experience the best in creative making, music and performance, with many taking advantage of the opportunity to be the fi rst to camp in West Dean’s stunning landscape. ‘Many wonderful people will look back with a smile in their minds knowing they have helped to create something beautiful. And in years to come they will be able to say that they were at the fi rst West Dean Festival,’ said Robert Pulley, Creative Director of the Festival. A line-up of top musicians and performers took to the stage throughout the weekend offering everything from rock and roll to rockabilly, soulto salsa, in various venues and performance tents around the site, providing something for all tastes. So popular was the weekend that the dates for 2012’s Festival have already been announced for next year’s August Bank Holiday weekend – 24 - 26 August – a defi nite date in my diary for next Summer! www.westdeanfestival.org.uk

What a rush into Autumn ! Where did the long lazy summer go? How depressing with the darker mornings and darker evenings, it makes the days

so short with the amount of daylight reduced, but we should re discover our sitting room as we can’t work outside when its dark!

Just briefl y to touch on the Christmas word!! Sorry about that but just to let you know that we will be once again taking your orders for Copas Turkeys with all the traditional accompniaments. Now the days are colder we have once again introduced our homemade soups perfect to keep the chill away. You will also fi nd lovely homemade quiches. We always have new goodies in so do pop in and have a look. A customer of ours called us an Aladdins cave for foodies! Don’t forget our lovely tearoom where you can have a warming coffee or hot chocolate and indulge in a big fat piece of homemade cake!

Back to the farming side, I am pleased to announce that the Rosie and Delilah have settled in well with Boris our young boar. Rosie is expecting her piglets by the time you are reading this so I will keep you posted with the next diary. Delilah is due to farrow (give birth) in mid December so I hope there is no snow on the ground otherwise we will be knitting feet warmers for the piglets!!

Popsey had her litter of 10 piglets in September and she had a tiny little piglet known as the runt of the litter so I have adopted him as she neglected him. I have been hand rearing him and feeding every hour or so day and night so I am slightly tired at the moment but he is worth it. His name is Wilbur and he is just toooo cute! He will be around the farm with me and he lives in our utility room. We will have lots of fun with him so keep an eye out for him. He is doing really well at the moment so fi ngers crossed he continues to grow and stay strong.

Our new cattle barn is nearly completed in one of the fi elds near the farm shop. We will be bringing our cows back here to have their calves so they will have a lovely new barn to raise their young. It’s really very exciting. Lots of improvements to the shop and the farm are on-going. Please come and support us and our local suppliers. We really do need you.

Warm wishes for a snuggly autumn,

The BBC is hosting a Deadly Day Out around the UK every Sunday from 11th September for 10

weeks and we were lucky enough to be there at the Horsham event! These events are a brilliant chance to fi nd out loads of facts about the natural world, from people who know all about it – as well as trying out adventure activities. The presenters Steve Bakshall and Naomi Wilkinson from CBBC were both on site ready to present us with some amazing live and deadly animals and birds of prey.

We arrived in time to get a good seat right at the front for the Steve Bakshall show. The brilliantly entertaining Lee roused the crowd into an excited frenzy with lots of Mexican waves and got everyone (including the reluctant mums and dads ) to join in with making animal noises and teaming up as lions, snakes and crocodiles! The whole show was brilliantly signed all the way through by Sarah Glendenning (www.sginterpreting.co.uk) who bravely stood next to Steve and all the creatures he had brought along.

Steve Bakshall did not disappoint, he is clearly a massive hit with everyone aged from 6 to 60, an interesting and entertaining presenter who really knows his stuff!

First up he brought us a display from Grace the eagle owl who has been rescued by the bird sanctuary from an owner who simply shouldn’t have had her in captivity and then a male and female harris hawk, both magnifi cent birds of prey, who fl ew into the tent over the audience and onto Steve’s arm and back to their owner… which was amazing, their wings spans are huge, followed by the peculiar looking Alligator snapping turtle…with a truly deadly snap, who later tried to escape his box… Next we had a look at the Chilean rose hair tarantula, and the not so attractive or popular camel spider… both deadly to their prey but not to humans.

Lastly but by no means least Steve brought out the star of the show a reticulated python. They are the world’s longest snakes and reptile but are not

the most heavily built. Like all pythons, they are nonvenomous and normally not considered dangerous to humans. Once stretched out, it was practically the length of the stage – yikes…

Wrapping itself around Steve’s legs it took a few minutes to untangle. After a few questions and answers it was time to go and do something else, there was plenty to choose from. Naomi Wilkinson was in the main arena with the birds of prey performing a brilliant display, some of the birds weren’t in the mood to perform which was entertaining, children from the audience were getting involved which was great fun.

Glass that lasts

Next stop for us was, deadly art! Lily aged 5 was shown by Nicola how to doodle an Aye Aye a critically endangered mammal from Madagascar… and whilst waiting in the queue for the doodle display we were shown two huge praying mantis, one bright green and one brown, who come from Malaysia, they eat the leaves of the guava plant, and apparently tea can be made from collecting their droppings, with amazing health restorative properties..!

After that it was unfortunately nearly time to go, but before we left we had a dig around in the mud and wood fi lled containers looking for insects that we could examine under the provided magnifying glass and Lily held a snake!

There really was so much more to do and so many more animals and insects to see, a huge rock tower to climb and some zorbing to be done, but we really didn’t have time to fi t it all in, next year will have to get there earlier!

The queuing was a bit of problem for some but I think all in all it was great fun packed day out and all for free! Don’t forget to check out Deadly 60 on CBBC and their website for loads of fun games to play www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/deadly60. Brilliant….

According to Wikipedia, Kickboxing ‘refers to a group of martial arts and stand-up combat

sports based on kicking and punching, historically developed from karate, Thai boxing and western boxing. Kickboxing is often practiced for self-defence, general fitness, or as a contact sport’. Bring it on!

The class I had been invited to was a mixed ability Kickboxing class held at the Secondary School Hall every Wednesday at 6.30pm. It is one of several that Andy Pink runs, together with Karate classes, keeping him and his clients fit and toned.

Sama is a growing Company in the South East and is the largest individual Martial Arts club in the UK. It has a membership of over 10,000 people and was established in 1978 in Brighton by Chief Instructor Hanshi Alan Gibson 8th Dan. Sama South East then was started by Sensei George Asargiotakis at Upper Beeding Primary School where he had over 80 children in his first Karate class.

Originally known as Sama Steyning (which was the then central village), it was felt the name should encompass a wider area as class locations spread. Thus today, the group is known as Sama South East and has classes in Sussex, Kent and Dorset.

Andy himself started his interest in Kickboxing when he attended a class with his wife. They were looking for a different fitness activity away from the gym. He fell in love with the sport and luckily had a natural talent for it. In fact, the instructor was sure that Andy must have been to other classes in the past but he was quick to assure me he hadn’t. He has been involved in the sport for over 10 years and became a full time instructor in 2010, bravely leaving a career in Law to pursue his passion.

Kickboxing works like Karate in that you work though a grading system. You begin with no belt, then work up the ladder with red through to black. Andy

achieved his Black belt in Kickboxing (which believe me is not as easy as it sounds) six years ago, and three years later his 1st Dan Black belt in Karate. He competes in the Sama Fight Nights and was an AKBA Full Contact Heavyweight Contender.

Not only content with teaching, he also trains Fighters to compete. I watched some of the more experienced guys in the class I attended and it looked pretty awesome to me.

So what is appealing about Kickboxing and who can attend? Participant-wise, it is for anyone over the age of 10. There is no upper age – you do as much or as little as you can manage. It is a great way to keep fit, learn discipline and increase confidence. It is not marketed as a self defence class but it is clear that some of the moves I saw may help if you were to get caught in a sticky situation.

Andy was keen to share a situation with me where a child was being bullied. By building up trust with Andy, and own self-confidence, the child felt able, at last, to speak to a teacher at school and the unpleasant situation was quickly resolved.

I could no longer hold the class up so onto the warm up, Skipping. Yes! I can do skipping! Boy – harder than I remembered from school. You certainly warm up quickly.

We all faced into the hall and looking round, I was surprised to see such a mixture of people. There was a young boy through to older participants with greyer hair than mine (sorry guys!). The mix of men and women was about even. Some were in uniform with belts proudly on display, and some (like me) were in loose fitting clothes and clearly there for a good workout.

Once Andy was sure we were warmed up, we joined up with our partners. I was really pleased and relieved when Andy asked Caitlin to be with me. Although Caitlin looked really fit, she was about half the size of the guys I had seen when I first arrived!

One person put on gloves (called focus mitts) whilst the other got ready to punch. Andy moved around the room instructing us on what to do according to our ability. No two groups would be doing the same thing if they were at different levels. You also didn’t have to be with someone of the same ability.

I enjoyed getting some day-time stress out with the punches. It felt good for my arms, but I wished I had cut my nails before going as they dug into the palms of my hands.

Now Caitlin got the chance to punch at my focus mitts. Gosh – where did that power come from? I was a bit taken back to begin with, but corrected my stance and off she went again. After we swapped a couple of times, it was time for some kicks. Again Andy tailored the move to the ability of the person. I felt rather sorry for Caitlin having my clumsy efforts to contend with, but once or twice I felt I had mastered it. Caitlin’s go and boy can that girl kick! The power behind a couple of moves sent me back a few steps. But it didn’t hurt. In fact I think we both kept saying sorry and laughing more than we should have!

Following the contact exercise, we practiced shadow boxing. It’s what it says on the tin – following your shadow. It helps to get your moves to flow and can help when combining different moves.

Our last section of exercise was aimed at building stamina. Lots of running, push-ups, star jumps etc. Quite Boot Camp I thought. Lastly we cooled down and stretched. A good ending to a fun-packed hour. I came away unbruised and feeling that I’d had a good work-out. The other participants were really friendly and welcoming and from all walks of life.

The classes are on a Pay as You Go basis so give it a go! It costs an affordable £5 for the hour class. Karate classes are £4 for children and £5 for over 16s. There is no need to sign up or commit for a long period of time. Andy recommends trying the classes for four weeks to really get a feel of whether it is the sport for you. If after this time you are still keen, he would recommend beginning to buy the suit and any other equipment you may require.

All venues have had a health and safety check, and all instructors are licensed and CRB checked. They are also trained in First Aid.

There is a really informative website at www.samasoutheast.co.uk, or you can call for class information on 01273 261242. Andy can be contacted direct by e-mail on [email protected]

As a young girl I was ballet trained to be like my mother who was a professional ballerina, but I grew too tall. I started my modelling career at the age of 16 when I was approached by Vogue and worked as a fashion model. I have been lucky enough to model for high couture such as Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier, Hugo Boss and Prada and have worked the European Catwalks. I was spotted by the famous ‘Bluebells’ then run my Madame Bluebell and offered a contract to dance in Las Vegas and the famous Paris Lido.My career went from strength to strength when I became a well known ‘leg’ model. My favourite job being ‘pretty polly’. I was chosen out of many hundreds for my 48 inch legs and a great career followed. At 23 I started my own model agency Top Team which grew to four branches London Regent Street, Brighton, Guildford and Southampton. With 120 people working for me to a very high standard I was voted ‘Best Business’ Woman 1981. My Models ranged from babies to old people, covering fashion, photographic, character and promotions. I went on to produce shows for Harrods, Selfridges, Allders and many top fashion houses such as Jaegar, Dereta, Alexon, Cerruti and many more.I trained one of the most well knows models of our time ‘Adam Perry’ who was famous for the Athena bare chested Adonis and baby, black and white shot of the 1980’s and have helped many models to take that first step into what is realistically a cold hard career to follow. Some became very successful like Joanne Slater who went on to work in Japan.

After my sixth child was born in 1999 I trained in holistic and beauty therapy including Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Sports Therapy, Neuro Muscular Deep Tissue, Manual Lymphatic drainage and went on to open a salon in Wells, Somerset employing 5 staff in a large salon in the High Street. I trained in many professional products including Dermalogica, Clarins, and Elemis but Carole Franck Paris always remains as my clear favourite. All their products are aromatherapy based and wonderful for the skin. Breast Cancer in 2009 shocked me into the reality of many things in life and is 2009 I modelled with Harley Davidson Motorbikes for a Breast Cancer poster, then earlier this year my school friend Yvonne Rowe and I organised a ball at Goodwood House and raised £11,000 for cancer charities.Over the years I have been constantly asked for advice in the modelling field and this is why I have decided to open The Model Info Bureau. I can offer honest frank advice to those considering working in the fashion or photographic field, I hold many contacts in the photographic side of the industry and I still produce and choreograph shows. My deportment and grooming school is fun for anyone of any age and covers a wide range of the things that I have learned through my extensive career that can help anyone in everyday life. I run my classes either privately or as a group at Body Matters in Steyning where I also have a Beauty and Complimentary Therapy Business known as Whispers.

For a quick celebratory, catch up lunch we chose The Sussex Produce Company café in Steyning

High Street. It’s a great venue for a meeting whether of a professional or social nature, with a perfect amount of space and a buzzy, yet relaxed atmosphere. The Café is at the back of the shop and looks like a comfortable front room with plenty of tables and chairs, and a sofa or two. Enough room for parents with buggys, children or a coffee on your own. The staff are really friendly and efficient, you know that nothing is too much trouble!

Using food only available in the shop and fresh from the deli counter the café has a great menu each day with items such as a homemade soup and salad of the day, choosing any item from the deli counter giving you the absolute freedom to mix and match exactly what you want!

You can choose a selection of the deli salads on its own for £5.95, or a deli item such as the tasty sounding Salami fried Sage and Dolce latte quiche, Hazelnut, pesto and parmesan stuffed mushroom or a Traditional Spanish tortilla, which are £7.95 with fresh salads from the deli or £4.95 without, which gives you the option to choose for yourself as little or as much as you would like! Or perhaps a real ploughmans platter choosing 2 from the counter (if you can!) from both the vast selection of meat and cheese counters including Home cooked baked gammon with Demerara sugar and cloves, or perhaps the award winning pork pie and cheeses range from the fantastic Colston Bassett Stilton or Creamy Gorgonzola Dolce! All

ploughmans come with salad, bread and chutneys for £8.95.

The sandwich specials on the day we visited included free range chicken breast with local bacon in pesto mayo with mixed leaves for £5.95 or a local farmhouse terrine with date chutney and salad leaves for £5.95 again. Or again you can make your own selection from the cheese and meat counter.

I went for the Smoked bacon, broccoli, caramlized onion and cream cheese frittata with fresh whole caramelised carrot salad chosen from the deli counter, which really was just delicious incredibly light frittata yet massively filling!

Soup of the day with farmhouse bread was fresh broccoli bacon and watercress which was apparently really fresh tasting, and also very filling, the extra touches of fresh watercress, croutons and oil drizzled on were especially nice! To drink we had a freshly squeezed orange juice which was amazing and tasty organic Elderflower presse. The drinks selection ranges from a delicious, rich hot chocolate, an award winning Fairtrade coffee from Union to the Sussex Produce own freshly squeezed juices or a smoothie of the day, if you spot a flavour of tea on the shelf that you fancy, you are more than welcome to try it. As the nights draw in and Halloween approaches, our thoughts at Sussex

produce turn to pumpkins, squashes and gourds.

In Europe and America squashes are an autumnal mainstay in the vegetable rack but I think many people in this country have been put off pumpkins because varieties grown for Halloween lanterns are grown for shape and size and not fl avour. This is a shame because there are many fantastic and beautiful types.

We grow ‘Mars’ for carving scary faces out of. They reliably grow round and to a set size (the whoppers you see in the newspapers are all very well but can be a bit of a problem to get home!) This year we have some fantastic pumpkin carving kits to help you turn your pumpkin into a work of art.

‘Mars’ pumpkins are great for carving but I far prefer ‘Crown

Prince’ for cooking as it’s fl avour is deeper and the texture less watery. Also it’s duck egg blue skin hides the deepest orange fl esh which looks beautiful in the shop. Try pumpkin and sweet potato soup or roast squash with pasta and a handful of our really good barrel-aged feta cheese. Delicious!

If you can’t be bothered to cook at night, then we may just have the alternative. We have been asked time and time again if we would consider being open in the evenings and we have fi nally relented! From the 7th October we will be open on Friday and Saturday evenings both with the shop and the café.

It won’t surprise you that the menu is all home cooked, seasonal and good value. So if you’re looking for somewhere to eat before going to the theatre or simply for somewhere a little bit different and romantic, why not pop in and have a look at the menu? It may even feature pumpkins and squash!

As autumn approaches we have been preparing for the forthcoming planting season,

right now the nursery is packed with a huge range of trees, shrubs, hardy palms and bamboos. We also have a choice selection home grown grasses ferns and herbaceous plants. Now, I know we don’t like to talk about it just yet but we are actually on a countdown to Christmas so here are a couple of rare and exciting plants for you to consider as a gift for that discerning gardener in your life or even collect as a gift for yourself! They are mostly grown by us here at Big Plant or aquired from other passionate nurserymen if we do not have them in, we can order them in as and when they are available. Hopefully you’ll fi nd them as exciting as we do growing them!

Agave bracteosa – Squid Agave From Northern Mexico and small among the agaves, its green succulent leaves with minute serrations along the margins, have a tendency to curl

somewhat, its upper third is densely covered with white or pale yellow fl owers in a spectacular creamy-white fl ower spike. This architectural Agave gives great effect, and is easy to care for, fast growing and will tolerate light frost but best brought in for the winter. The arching, spineless green leaves form a clump rosettes that develop from the mother plant which will die after fl owering but new suckers from below the rosette will perpetuate the plant.

This certainly makes for an interesting container or dry land rock garden plant, and once established, it needs only occasional watering and can tolerate drought, but looks at its best with regular watering during any hot season!

Wollemia nobilis – Wollemi Pine The Wollemi Pine is one of the world’s oldest and rarest plants dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. With less than 100 adult trees known to exist in the wild, the Wollemi Pine is now the focus of extensive research to safeguard its survival. Planting just 1 Wollemi Pine

will help to offset over 2% of your own carbon footprint! This extraordinary plant was only discovered in 1994 by a park ranger in Australia , 200km west of Sydney in a rainforest gorge within the 500,000 hectare Wollemi National Park in the Blue Mountains – in a secret location! In spite of its rarity it is a versatile plant and will tolerate both extreme heat, full sun or shade and british cold down to -12 degrees c.

Features of this unusual plant include the production of bubbling liquid from the age of 5 years old and the production of a waxy sheen which it is believed has helped it cope with the colder winter months. This plant makes a unique gift for special occasions, a stunning patio and indoor plant and feature tree for parks and large gardens.

Really both quite spectacular plants creating a stunning and interesting focal point and interesting conversation starter!

One of the techniques that I often employ with my clients is EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

Strictly speaking this is not Hypnotherapy, but it can work well in conjunction with it, by helping clients deal with psychological or physical issues.

I had learned a bit about EFT when I fi rst started my formal hypnotherapy training and it was at a dinner dance with colleagues where someone suggested trying it to help my wife, Cathy, with her frozen shoulder. She noticed an immediate improvement and attributes this to EFT. Months later, when her blood pressure was high, she successfully used the technique to bring it down to an acceptable level.

It is a strange, but simple, technique which involves tapping on several of the acupuncture points, while repeating an affi rmation. I have had a lot of success with it, even in rare situations where conventional hypnotic techniques have not appeared to have been effective.

The great thing about it is that it is easy to learn and can be used as a self-help tool by clients. One client used the technique to reduce the pain experienced in an arthritic wrist.

Another used it to reduce the feeling of anxiety being experienced on a day-to-day basis. I could give many more examples.

One of the great things about Cognitive hypnotherapy is that it is fl exible in its approach and EFT gives another weapon in the armoury; providing a greater likelihood of success in the treatment of clients.
