GONE TOO SOON:

Dennis

Wilson Beach Boy,

Child of Winter.

Dec. 4, 1944

Dec. 28 1983

Aside from the great A Christmas Gift To You From Phil Spector,

released in 1963 and the following year’s The Beach Boys Christmas Album,

not a lot of 60’s rockers released Christmas albums at the time. In some

cases this was probably for the best. The idea of Jim Morrison drunkenly

caterwauling his way through “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause” is too

awful to consider, although come to think of it, The Doors could probably

have knocked out a decent version of “We Three Kings.” In recent years, all

sorts of 1960s acts from Jethro Tull to the Moody Blues to Bob Dylan have

tried their hand at creating their own versions of musical holiday fare. In this

spirit, we are presented with The Monkees’ 2018 Christmas Party.

Fifty years ago, if anyone could have, and should have, cut a Christ-

mas record, it was these guys. With the unexpected release, as well as criti-

cally and commercially positive reception, of the Monkees’ 2016 Good

Times!, they discovered a perfect formula to create an artistically satisfying

Monkees album for a new era. Christmas Party follows suite: Adam

Schlesinger from the band Fountains of Wayne is a sympathetic producer,

arranger, musical ally, and session man. Contributing to the original song-

writing and overall sonic landscape of the album are XTC’s Andy Partridge,

Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo and R.E.M.’s Peter Buck. Other songs are well cho-

sen from solidly melodic writers like Roy Wood, Alex Chilton and Paul

McCartney.

Mike Nesmith retains the mantle of the group’s elder statesman by

singing the old holiday chestnut “The Christmas Song,” as well as a lovely

reading of the 1941 impressionistic pop standard “Snowfall.”

Davey Jones, trouper that he is, doesn’t let a little thing like having

passed away six years ago keep him from contributing two numbers: the

cheerful old Hawaiian novelty song “Mele Kalikimaka,” and “Silver Bells,”

which is custom made for Jones’ appealing British accent and charmingly

winsome delivery. The vocals date back to 1991, and the musical tracks are,

for the most part, newly recorded.

Peter Tork’s sole contribution, the traditional “Angels We Have

Heard on High,” is simply gorgeous. His banjo playing on the track, along

with his vocals, make it the stand out track on Christmas Party, much as his

performance on Good Times! of Carol King’s “Wasn’t Born to Follow”

made it the highlight of that particular album.

Which brings us to Mickey Dolenz, the MVP of Christmas Party.

Singing 8 of the 13 tracks on the Album, Dolenz’ 73 year old voice doesn’t

seem one whit diminished from that of the young man who sang hits like

“I’m a Believer,” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” over a half decade ago.

From the shimmering psychedelia of “House of Broken Ginger-

bread” to a version of Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” that

tops the original by eschewing it’s dated 1980’s synth-pop production, to the

powerhouse vocals of “Merry Christmas Baby,” Dolenz’ performances are

simply stunning. Somehow, all these pieces complete a puzzle that feels

like a complete and uniform album, artistically successful from top to

bottom. If it’s the rare holiday album that just may still have you

whistling and tapping your toes to it’s charms come Memorial Day,

The Monkees Christmas Party certainly may become one of them.

Note: Target stores carry a special version with two bonus tracks:

Christmas is My Time of Year and Riu Chiu, an A cappella Spanish

Villancico from the 16th century. (recorded in 1976 & 1967 respectively).

More Holiday Albums To Make The Season Merry! Ringo Starr: I Wanna Be Santa Claus: Not a huge seller when it was

released, but a good old Liverpudlian time for all, when it’s the season for fig puddings, hot

cider, and time for Old Saint Nick coming down the chimbly-wimble. Loads of fun originals,

Christmases both White and Blue, Ringo’s own take on The Beatles’ “Christmas Time (is Here

Again),” and who better to do a version of “The Little Drummer Boy?”

Davie Allan & the Arrows: Fuzz For the Holidays: Davie

Allan, the King Of Fuzz, and his Arrows, played pretty much every bad-ass, fuzztone-drenched

guitar instrumental soundtrack, for pretty much every bad-ass, grade-B biker movie of the

1960s. Here, the group tackle Holiday fare like “Hark! the Herald Angels sing,” “Angels We

Have Heard on High,” and “Feliz Navidad,” with all the guts, glory, and tonal beauty the can

muster. Highly recommended! See also: The Ventures Christmas Album.

Little Steven’s Underground Garage Presents Christmas a Go Go: A mother lode of cool Christmas singles can be found just beneath the fabulous Rat-Fink in-

spired cover of this too-good-to-be-true holiday compilation. Let the titles and artists speak for

themselves: Keith Richards Run Rudolph Run; Bob Seger and the Last Heard Sock it to Me

Santa; Ramones Merry Christmas (I Don’t Wanna Fight Tonight); Darlene Love All Alone on

Christmas; Clarence Carter Back Door Santa; The Len Price 3 It’s Christmas Time Ebeneezer;

Wizzard I Wish it Could Be Christmas Every Day; The Fab Four Silent Night; Tina Sugandh

White Christmas; The Chevelles Come All Ye Faithful Surfer Girls; Brian Setzer Orchestra

Santa Drives a Hot Rod; Soupy Sales Santa Claus is Surfin’ to Town; Cocktail Slippers Santa’s

Coming Home; Joe Pesci If It Doesn’t Snow on Christmas; Boss Martians 3 Ghosts; Rufus

Thomas I’ll Be Your Santa Baby; Chesterfield Kings Hey Santa Claus; Electric Prunes Jingle

Bells; The Kinks Father Christmas; Jean Beauvoir Merry Christmas to all the World;

Jimi Hendrix: Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year: At just three tracks, this is not a full length album, but more an extended single, however it’s

oddball appeal make up for it’s brevity. Still, you get Jimi’s take on “The Little Drummer

Boy,” “Silent Night,” “Auld Lang Syne” as well as the Hendrix original “Three Little Bears.”

Brian Wilson: What I Really Want For Christmas: Beach Boy

leader Brian Wilson tried his hand at a Christmas album back in 2005, mixing traditional songs

with originals, and utilizing first class lyricists Bernie Taupin and Jimmy Webb. His crack

backing band was fresh from recording and touring the infamous “SMiLE” album the year be-

fore, and it shows in the more offbeat arrangements here. Of course, the Beach Boys released

one of the most famous of all time in 1964, “The Beach Boys Christmas album.” If interested,

one is highly recommended to look into the titles “Ultimate Christmas” or “Christmas with the

Beach Boys.” They vary on a single track, but in essence are both comprised of the original

BB Christmas LP, along with tracks from a 1977 album, “Merry Christmas From the Beach

Boys” which was recorded, but remained unreleased for decades. It’s also the only place to

find the Beach Boys rare Child of Winter (Christmas Song) single from December 23rd 1974. 3

stage via Pete Townshend’s mighty Gibson SG guitar).*

*Note: Originally to have been held near Ulster county’s town of Woodstock NY, the concert was moved at

the 11th hour some fifty miles to the west to a field near Sullivan County’s White Lake. The non-ticketed

turnout was so large, it became a free festival. It retained the Woodstock name despite the new location.

*Note: Free concert. At this point, the property of the 1969 Woodstock festival was owned by June Gelish,

whose late partner Louis Necketopoulis purchased the land from the estate of Max Yasgur in 1981. The

field upon which the original concert took place still continues to be known colloquially as “Yasgur’s

Farm” (Other parts of Yasgur’s former land continues to host musical events). In 1984, Ms. Gelish saw fit

to have a monument to the 1969 festival placed on the original grounds, where it remains to this day.

Woodstock ‘90, August 1990, Yasgur’s Farm, White Lake NY (Town of Bethel) Richie Havens, Abe Guthrie & Xavier with Arlo Guthrie, Bill Perry Blues Band, David Peel & The Wood-

Slash, Neil Schon, Andy Fraser & Jason Bonham), Neville Brothers, Santana, Eric Gales, Jimmy Cliff’s

Reggae All-Stars featuring Rita Marley, Eek a Mouse & Shabba Ranks.*

*Note: This concert was much closer to the actual town of Woodstock NY, near where the 1969 festival had

originally had been planned to be held.

Bethel ’94, August 13 - 14, 1994, Yasgurs Farm, White Lake NY (Town of Bethel) Mountain featuring Leslie West, Corky Laing & Noel Redding (Jimi Hendrix Experience), Melanie, Arlo

*Note: Though an officially branded Woodstock Festival (the third, and thus far last, after 1969 & 1994),

this event is best remembered as being antithetical to the spirit of the original concert. The show took place

on the steaming hot tarmac of a military base, lacked enough water and law enforcement to hand a crowd

of 230,000, and unfortunately some of the acts misused their bully pulpit on stage by egging the crowds on

and inciting their worst behavior. The overcrowded and fenced in audience responded by looting setting

fires, destroying property, and engaging in several reported sexual assaults. There were 44 arrests, and

overwhelmingly negative press reports of the concert.

Heroes of Woodstock / Bethel Woods Music Festival, August 15, 2009, Bethel Woods C.F.T. A. White Lake NY Conrad Oberg, Levon Helm Band, Mountain (Leslie West, Corky Laing, Rev Jones), Ten Years After

(Chick Churchill, Rick Lee, Leo Lyons, Joe Gooch), Canned Heat (Harvey “The Snake” Mandel, Larry

“The Mole” Taylor, Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra, Dale Spalding +Jocko Marcellino{Sha Na Na}), Jefferson

Starship (set included Quicksilver & Grateful Dead members & songs - Paul Kantner{Jefferson Airplane/

Jefferson Starship, KBC}, David Frieberg{Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson

Starship/Starship}, Gary Duncan{QMS}, Linda Imperial, Tom Constanten{Grateful Dead}, Jeff Pevar,

Cathy Richardson, Chris Smith, Donny Baldwin +Alexander Kantner), Country Joe McDonald, Big

Brother and the Holding Company (Sam Andrew, David Getz, Peter Albin, Ben Nieves, Sophia Ramos +

Shiho Ochi{Superfly})*

*Note: Heroes of Woodstock was a sixteen date tour. The stop at Bethel Woods on August 15th 2009 was

considered to mark the 40th anniversary of the original Woodstock Festival. Richie Havens played on the

Bethel Woods grounds the evening before, to mark the occasion. Other stops on the Heroes of Woodstock

tour included performances by John Sebastian, Edgar Winter, and David Frieberg & Gary Duncan’s re-

united Quicksilver Messenger Service.

There was a second Bethel Woods Music & Arts Festival held on August 14th 2011 featuring Tommy

James and the Shondells, and Woodstock Alumni Blood Sweat and Tears featuring no members of it’s 1969

lineup, along with a Sly-less Family Stone, featuring original members Jerry Martini (saxophone), Gregg

Errico (drums), and the late Cynthia Robinson (trumpet).

A Day in the Garden, August 14- 16, 1998, Yasgurs Farm, White Lake NY (Town of Bethel) Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, Ten Years After, Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers, Pete Townshend, Joni

Mitchell, Lou Reed, Richie Havens, Donovan, Melanie, Third Eye Blind, The Goo Goo Dolls, The Flys,

Marcy Playground, Joan Osborne, Dishwalla.*

*Note: At this point, Cable Television Magnate Alan Gerry had bought the grounds of the 1969 Woodstock

festival. He had yet to build Bethel Woods Center For the Arts, and instead constructed a large temporary

stage, holding the three day festival on the same sprawling field as the concert held 29 years earlier. The

shows went off without a hitch, and from the freshly cedar chip strewn trails to the fresh flowers, immacu-

late lawn, state of the art sound system and top notch acts, it was more than apparent that Alan Gerry’s

immaculate vision would inform the future performing arts center, Bethel Woods, that he planned to build.

A Day in the Garden, August 15, 1999, Yasgurs Farm, White Lake NY (Town of Bethel) CPR (David Crosby, Jeff Pevar, James Raymond), Richie Havens, Leslie West, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie,

Johnny Winter, Danko/Hudson Band (Rick Danko, Garth Hudson of The Band), Country Joe McDonald.*

*Note: This show was on a much smaller scale than the unfortunate event in Rome NY a month before, and

was much more in keeping with the peace and music credo of the 1969 festival.
