On Friday night the men took on2nd in the south division, Medicine Hat College. The game was a very physical game under the hoop and a very fast paced game up the
floor. Landon Vaneck was awarded Player of the Games for his momentum changing plays in the second half. The men came up empty handed in the end but not due to a lack of
heart or effort.
Running off the motivation from Friday nights loss the Viking men took on the
Briercrest Clippers. The Vikings were 83% from the free throw line. The men won the contest decisively with a score of 93-77.
Shayne Bruney was awarded Player of the Games for racking up another double double
with 12 rebounds and 30 points.
The women took on Medicine Hat College Friday night to and excited crowd filled
gym. The women kept pace with the Rat-tlers right to the end, but were defeated
92-80. Kelsey Lund was awarded Player of the Game for her double double with 14
rebounds and 21 points.
On Saturday the women took on the Briercrest Clippers at home. The women out played & outran the small Clippers
bench and finished the game with a score of 82-50. In her second game back this
season Taryn Story scored 25 points, and Amanda Stonehouse was awarded the
Player of the Game for her contributions on both ends of the court with 9 rebounds, 6
assists, 4 steals, and 6 points.
This past weekend cross country skier Andrew Brisbin headed to Whistler Olympic Park, BC to compete in U23 World Championship Trials. Andrews best performance was in Skiathalon which requires competitors to switch from skate to classic technique halfway through the 30km distance race. Andrew finished a very respectable 13th up against the best in Canada. Coach Hand Skinstad who went along for the trials as well said that the “waxing was very challenging but we had excellent skis which gives athletes a physiological boost.” Andrew placed 22 in the classic race, and 41 in the sprints. “Andrews 13th placing in the first race shows that his dedication is paying off. The majority of the athletes he is competing against train and compete full-time” said Coach Skinstad. Andrew hopes to keep showing improvement as the season goes on especially at the big com-petitions such as Western and National Champion-ships in the coming months.
Balancing the books… Sleep, eat, classes, group projects, studying, team practice, strength training, travel, com-petition, eat, sleep, repeat… Not all days are like this, but our student-athletes, on average, dedicate 21 hours a week to training and performing in their chosen sport. Add in weekend travel to competitions, athletic therapy, and involvement in community initiatives and there is little to no time re-maining to take on part-time jobs to offset the costs of attending university. Financial assistance is crucial to the continuation of the proud tradition of sporting and academic excellence at Augustana. Invest in our athletes and their dreams will become reality. This past week the Vikings Men’s Hockey team got right back at it with a Home Game vs the NAIT Ooks on Wednesday January 11, 2012, and an away game in Edmonton on Friday January, 20. Coming off the Christmas holidays some players were able to return to the ice, notably Cap-tain Tory Dyck who missed 10 games in the first half of the season, while others continue to be challenged by injuries.
Wednesday nights game proved tough with the NAIT Ooks scoring 6 unanswered goals over the Vikings. The Vikings were not idle on the opposite end of the rink with NAIT goal tender Shan-non Szabados making 32 saves. The Vikings played a hard game but came up empty handed on home ice. On Friday night the Vikings headed into Ooks territory hoping to dictate the a much different outcome then Wednesday nights game. Matt Foster scored the lone Vikings goal in the first pe-
riod, to which the NAIT Ooks answered with their only goal of the evening. The game would run into overtime but end in a tie. Head coach Blaine Gusdal had this to say about the NAIT series:
"To come out of the two game series with Nait with only one point was a huge dissapointment, but
after our "hiccup" in the home game, our effort and resilience in the return match at Nait was a better indication of what we're capable of. We really felt we deserved better up in Edmonton as we out-shot them and out-chanced them, plus we had to kill off numerous 5 on 3 opportunities where our guys really buckled down and paid a price to be rewarded. I was proud of how the players responded in the second game and I expect our effort will be matched in each of our games moving forward."
The Vikings are now 4th in the ACAC rankings.

How has your team played so far into the 2011-2012 season and have they lived up to your
expectations?
“I'm pleased with our first half of the season. Finishing the first half at .500 is very big for us to possibly challenge for a playoff spot. We're looking to build off of the momentum of winning four of our last five in the second half to push for a playoff spot, and possibly playoff positioning.
Who are your two or three main players you look to lead and why?
“We're looking to second year players Cole McCartney and Naz Gangji for on court performance and to Kent Sanregret and Josh Ryan for continued leadership.
Who are the three main teams in men's volleyball to challenge for the ACAC title?
“I believe Briercrest will be very tough to beat at home, and Red Deer and Mount Royal have the tools to finish well at the championships

Day One
Arrive at four in the morning to the Tropicoco Hotel after a five hour plane ride and two hour bus ride. We go to bed for a five hour sleep before we get up
for breakfast at ten. All meals are buffet style, always served with pineapple, oranges and mini buns.
We left at one for our first training session with the Cuban team. We ran our drills for the first hour, then scrimmaged for the next two. It’s an open-air gym, there is a roof but sun and wind can pass through. We were nervous to play because the floor wasn’t varnished and there was splinters and holes in the floor. The ball even bounced differently so it was hard to adjust. The lan-guage barrier was difficult on the first day as our tour guide, Galine, did most of the translating. Day Two 3 hour tour of Old Havana city in the morning. It was a
bus and walking tour. We saw a lot of historical build-ings and monuments, a comparison of buildings that were restored and ones that weren’t.
It was like a blast from the past when it comes to vehicles, as they were very old models of cars. Afternoon was our basketball session. We did their
drills this day, then scrimmaged afterwards. We really had to learn with our eyes as he explained the drills because of the language barrier.
Day Three Went to the beach and played beach volleyball in the morning. Afternoon session and scrimmage with the Cuban girls. By this day we are comfortable and getting used to the court and language barrier.
Day Four Went to the market where locals sold very unique and diverse souvenirs and merchandise to people. There were multiple set-ups, rows and rows of them where merchants tried to capture your attention. They all knew English, knowing that it was a hot spot for tourists. In the afternoon, we took Salsa classes in the hotel. In the afternoon we went to an orphanage and brought gifts for them. It was an eye opener to how fortunate we really are, where a simple piece of candy bright-ened their day. They were really fascinated with technology they’ve never seen be-fore (our cameras). It’s a local school but the orphans live at the school, which their stay is provided by the government.- It was cool to see them with the candy, as they all shared with each other instead of keeping it to themselves. The two hours we spent with them flew by as we played soccer, jump rope, hoola hoops and basketball with them. Day Five
Last day with the Cuban girls. We brought gifts to give them at the end, as did they for us. Everyone was really happy with their gifts, and we exchanged emails and took final pictures as the Cana-Cuba family. It was hard to believe the trip was already coming to an end. Day 6 Full beach day Day 7 Time to return to Canada

“Our Sport Cultural Exchange to Cuba improved our individual and team skills. Cuba’s economy has
improved dramatically since I visited a decade ago on a similar Sport Cultural Exchange with Augus-
tana. Going to the orphanage, playing with the kids and giving them gifts were highlights for every-
one. The exchange showed our team how fortunate we are to live in Canada and play basketball in the
facilities that we have. We want to thank our sponsors and parents for your support as this was a life
changing experience for the team and on and especially off the court” - Coach Leanne Shenton -
Why did you choose to attend Augustana?
What has been your best moment playing for the Vikings?
Do you have any rituals or superstitions?
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
What are you looking to accomplish in your time at Augustana?
Who has been your biggest influence in your life thus far?
What has been the biggest accomplishment in sport?
What is the best advice you were ever given?
What is your favourite type of music/band?
What is your favourite food to eat before a race?
I chose to come to Augustana for a many reasons. I like that Camrose is close to my home town, its is a U
of A campus. Volleyball-wise, I chose Augustana because I had the opportunity to have a big role on the
team in my first year.
I would have to say Greg Ryan. I started playing club volleyball for Greg when I was 16. Since then volleyball
has become the main focus of my life. I would not be the person I am today had I not been coached by Greg.
My biggest accomplishment in sport is a tie between winning gold and the Western Canada Summer Games
with Team Alberta and winning Male Volleyball Rookie of The Year and Team MVP
Let your playing do the talking.
This season as a whole has been great so far. We are in the fight for playoff position and have all the right in-
gredients to have a good finish at provincials.
I am looking to play my best every game to help the team win.
Foot-long Steak and Cheese. On Italian Herbs and Cheese. With lettuce, green peppers
and red onions. BBQ sauce, Southwest Chipotle, and Mayo. Toasted.
I do the same pregame warm up and listen to the same playlist.
My favourite band at the moment is The Rural Alberta Advantage
My inspiration come from the trust I have in my abilities and my team-mates.

Women's Volleyball: Despite the continuing lack of wins, the girls are still breaking new grounds. Opening week of the 2nd half, the girls lost in 4 and 5 sets to Keyano college, marking the first time they have made it to a 5th set and the most sets they have won in a weekend. Karla Yuha also posted a new high in kills for a female Vikings volleyball player with 18. Men's Volleyball: Men's volleyball swept a weekend against an opponent other than Concordia for the first time by taking down 2nd ranked Keyano to start the 2nd semester. The win's also marked the first time the Vi-kings have swept a road trip and the first time they have been over .500. Men's and Women's Basketball: This past weekend, the men and women's basketball teams won together on the same night for the first time in their history. The women brought themselves back to .500 and the men picked up their first win at home this season and sit at 5-7. Both teams sit 5th in the North. Some Other Thoughts : During the men's basketball game Friday night against Medicine Hat, there was a small fan club of young kids cheering on Simon Irving. There were a number of other children at the games and they all seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a bit. The community work of Vikings athletics seems to be making an impact. It is eerie going to a basketball game and not hearing Nazheef Gangji from somewhere in the stands. Teams going into our gym in both basketball and volleyball may be able to come away with a win, but those don't come easy. Just ask Medicine Hat basketball, both games went down to the wire. Teams who come to this town for playoffs beware! It's a good thing that the annual street hockey game between students and faculty took place first semester. It's so cold right now that my eyes started to stick together walking to the fitness centre. It's about a 3 minute walk for me. With Vikings Super Weekend coming up, getting concert tickets right away would be smart. This reminds me, I need to go get ti ckets. This weekend basketball and volleyball take on Lakeland while hockey battles MacEwan. Lots of home games, lots of action, come on out! But wear warm clothes.
