Dean Allen Berger speaks at the Champions Friday Celebration. He would kick start the first GO VIKING GO chant for next season!!

Balancing the books… Sleep, eat, classes, group projects, studying, team practice, strength training, travel, com-petition, eat, sleep, repeat… Not all days are like this, but our student-athletes, on average, dedicate 21 hours a week to training and performing in their chosen sport. Add in weekend travel to competitions, athletic therapy, and involvement in community initiatives and there is little to no time re-maining to take on part-time jobs to offset the costs of attending university. Financial assistance is crucial to the continuation of the proud tradition of sporting and academic excellence at Augustana. Invest in our athletes and their dreams will become reality. To Adopt an Athlete click on the link below and pick the sport your athlete participates in and honour them with a gift in their name. Adopt a Viking Online Giving Page Thank You Vikings Athletics

Why did you choose to attend Augustana?

What has been your best moment playing for the Vikings?

Do you have any rituals or superstitions?

What are you looking to accomplish in your time at Augustana?

Who has been your biggest influence in your life thus far?

What has been the biggest accomplishment in sport?

What is the best advice you were ever given?

What is your favourite type of music/band?

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Because it was in my hometown, I got to keep my roots to the community of Camrose. Getting a U of A degree in

an environment that is completely accepting of anyone, with small class sizes, and 3 all you can eat meals a day

in the café.

My brother Jonathan Chytracek, an Augustana Graduate, 5-year volleyball player, awesome brother, husband

and now father.

Making it 5 years, and being made captain in my last year.

Never loose a loss! Learn from everything you do and get ready for next week.

A win against Kings in my second year. I think it was the most team win I’ve ever been a part of. Every player

had at least 10 points, and I happened to get player of the game, mostly because my brother-in-law

Brendin Huculak kept on finding me on the fast break.

Graduating and making playoffs!

Listen to music in the team room in pregame, never show up late

to the game. I get ready by showing my support to the women

team for at least 2 quarters and if at all possible get a shoot at

their half time or even early if possible. The last shot I ever take

before leaving a gym has to be a swish.

Guns N Roses for wake up music, rap for pre game music; Jay Z,

Kanye West, and recently Childish Gambino.

Famous quotes from the greats such as, John Wooden, Walter Pa-ton, Kobe Bryant, MJ, and Vince Lombardi. As well as videos that Shayn Bruney puts on my Facebook wall.

Pasta and toast.

What is your favourite food to eat before a game?

Do you have any rituals or superstitions?

What is your favourite type of music/band?

Hope everyone enjoyed the Easter break. A correction from an earlier edition of The Last Word, I said that Andy Pohl was the first National Champion in X Country

running Augustana has had, however, we had a female champion as well, Marcia Birkgt, back in 2005. This has been heck of a year for our athletics program. A year ago, our curling, X-Country Running, Skiing, and Biathlon teams were continuing their excelling ways

but our Volleyball teams were just added to the ACAC, Men's Basketball began the off season early, Women's Basketball came into the playoffs as an underdog, and Hockey had bowed out to S.A.I.T. in the semi's. Now as we go into our awards night, our outdoor sports and curling teams were great once again (highlighted by Andy Pohl's CCAA gold medal in X Country Running), Men's Volleyball and Basketball made playoffs, Women's Basketball finished above .500 and nearly got into the final four,

and Men's Hockey took home the ACAC championship. For a hardware count, this year Vikings Athletics has produced 14 ACAC All Conference players, an All-Canadian, a male X Country Running National Champion, and 4 ACAC team medals, including 2 banners. That doesn't even cover the success in Biathlon and Cross Country Skiing. It has been a fantastic year filled with accomplishments that should definitely be celebrated. Now, the question is where to go from here? We (the athletes, athletic

staff, fans, and everyone else involved in anyway with Vikings Athletics) made an impression in the ACAC this year. Nearly all of our team sports were competitive and in the playoffs, there were a number of team and individual achievements (as mentioned before), we are more connected with the community then ever, and we now boast the best fan-base in the ACAC. Those are great accomplishments in a few years for a school this size. But the question we all have to ask now is do we want to settle for

what we have done so far or strive for even bigger? Next year is going to be an interesting one for ACAC, for a number of reasons. The chief change is the departure of Mount Royal University, who will be competing in the CIS ranks, ending a long tenure of athletic prowess at the ACAC level. This opens up a lot of questions, such as which schools are potential candidates for joining the ACAC, what will happen to formats for the sports in which MRU is no longer apart of, and what programs are going to take over as league leaders? The ACAC has become

more competitive in recent years in almost every sport, with some leagues having as many as 10 teams that could win it all, but with MRU gone, that takes a serious con-tender out of the picture and opens up a number of windows of opportunity. Could that be us?

It's been a great experience writing each week and I have received a lot of great feedback from many of you, most of it positive, some of it negative, but all of it con-structive. I'm glad that many of you enjoyed reading and I thank everyone for supporting our Monday Magazine. I hope everyone prepares for exams, enjoys the rest of the semester, and can enjoy a great summer. Hopefully I will get to see many of you next year and for everybody, but especially those who are gone, take care and God

Bless. JR
