6th Grade News Mrs. Eure and Mrs. Simpson have students reading The Outsiders and working on figurative language, conflict, cause/effect and elements of poetry. They are continuing to teach morphology, stressing prefixes. They are also working with 6th grade students on study strategies in hopes of improving study habits.

Mrs. Hobbs has students working on a Keyboarding Unit. Students are learning how to compute their keyboarding speed (GWAM) and learning the proper ways to key.

In math class, Mrs. Casterlow and Mrs. Hall just started their unit on ratios and proportions. Students will complete two projects this month, one on finding the percent of a number and the other on how to budget and comparison-shop for Thanksgiving.

Staying Physically Fit! Mr. Liles facilitates fitness activities to stress the importance of taking care of the body.

Fall Festival The Fall festival was a very successful event. Students who wanted to participate in the festivities were able to participate during the school day. Parents as well as staff members made this event a success by volunteering their time to run various booths, set up for the event and clean up after the event ended.

Students enjoyed cotton candy, canned drinks and a variety of sweet treats. Some students won cakes through participating in a cake raffle or the cake walk activity.

A huge THANK YOU goes out to Mrs. Elaine Simpson for coordinating this event. Mrs. Simpson owns a wealth of resources that were a major contribution to the success of this event.

Student and teacher volunteers participated in the Haunted House during the Fall Festival. This

CMS Haunted House was enough to get anyone’s hydrenaline pumping!

PBIS fundraiser for “Bry”

One of our very own, Bryanna Broadbent, 8th grade CMS student is fighting Osteosarcoma Cancer. We, her CMS family are dedicated to spreading a little kindness by raising monies to help support Bryanna in her fight against cancer. At present we have two fundraisers in progress; Making a change for Bry and a spaghetti dinner. The Making a Change

for “Bry” fundraiser may be supported by bringing spare change in and dropping it in a money jar that is stored in the cafeteria before Nov. 13th. The spaghetti dinner can be supported, by purchasing a ticket (cash only) from your homeroom teacher or any member of the CMS BETA Club. The plates will be prepared on Nov.7th from 4PM til 7 PM.

More CMS grade level activities…

Mrs. West and Mrs. Riddick have 7th grade students finishing their weather unit. They will be studying Physical Sciences this month. The first topic of study will be energy.

Mrs. Hutchinson and Mrs. Dail’s Math 8 students have been working hard to solve 1, 2 and multi-step equations. We will be having a unit test on equations the 1st week in November. Our next topic will be functions.

Eigth grade Science classes have just finished their unit on Hydrosphere. They will be studying the interactions of living things in our ecosystems unit this month. Later this month they will study agents of desease.

Mrs. Dail’s Math 1 students have also been working on solving multi step equations as well as solving more abstract problems that have only variables. They have also been working on conversions of different rates and finding the percent error of certain measurements. The next topic we will focus on is inequalities.

Eighth grade students in Mrs. Hobbs and Mrs. Owens classes have finished reading The Giver and

now are doing a variety of follow up activities, including a debate, a text-to-movie comparison, and an essay. They will be continuing their theme of Individuality versus Conformity throughout the rest of October and November with more texts and media that ties into The Giver. The eighth graders have also been working on root words and have completed five different mini projects for their first set of roots. The mini projects have proven to be successful and the students enjoyed working on them. All of the eighth grade did well their first root word test, too. Give them a high five when you see them! They have 15 more sets to go... they can do it!

pH Lab- Mrs. Lenau’s 8th grade students observed six mystery liquids & tested their pH. The students tried to determine what

the unknown solutions were (an acid, a base, or a neutral) & their common name.

Grant money received…..

Amanda Hobbs and Krystle Williams are the recipients of the Dollar General Literacy Grant! With these funds CMS was able to purchase more than 450 books

for the students to have readily accessible within each ELA teachers classroom. Each ELA teacher now has two sets of the NC Battle of the Books that students must read in order to participate on both the school and regional teams.

Volleyball

The Lady Vikings defeated Riverside in 2 sets in Game 1. Madison Weatherly led the team in serving, 13 of 14. The entire team led all other defensive and offensive plays. Without their team work and talking on the court, we could have defeated them. The Lady Vikings fought hard in Game 2 but could not come away with a victory. Hannah Ward and Madison Weatherly led the way offensively. Hannah had six hits and Madison served 8 of 9 and had 5 assists. Congratulations Ladies, on a GREAT season and finishing 2nd in the conference! Ms. Lilley and Mrs. Farmer are so proud of your hard work this season!

Football Soccer

Cheerleading It’s been a great start for Central Middle School’s cheerleaders. We have applied what we learned at UCA Camp this summer to our practices and games. Be on the look out for Viking Callie Riddick, one of our captains. She was chosen to participate in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Parade!

Our first pep-rally was very thrilling and the girls did a great job. We are now working on dance moves and some new

cheers. So far, we have no injuries and plan to keep it that way. The squad has had a successful football season and we are very excited for the upcoming basketball season. Our team is motivated, enthusiastic and determined to be

GREAT CHEERLEADERS!

GO VIKINGS!

One Oct. 15th our Viking fought hard, however fell short of victory. CMS lost their second game of the season with a score of 12-6. Kaleb Logan threw to Deronye Griffin for the touchdown that was earned during that game. The mighty Vikings have two more games to play! With a goal of having a 4-2 season, Coach Costen leads the team in daily football practices. We are scheduled to visit Bertie Middle school on Tuesday Nov. 10, 2015. The offensive line, lead by quarterback, Kaleb Logan strive to earn the winning score through passing and running plays. Our Mighty Vikings have a strong defense. Jadyn Bond will lead the defensive team in keeping our opponent out of the end zone. Let’s cheer our Mighty Vikings on to win their last two games of this season!

Our Viking soccer team placed as region champions! Every team member exhibited great sportsmanship and gave their all to achieve victory. In a battle against Riverside defensive plays lead by Jahliyah Riddick and Joshua Olsen kept Riverside from scoring. Kaleb Brickhouse and Sameul Doughtie were able to score goals during this match.

Coach Stiles and Coach Hudson would like to congratulate the team for finishing a successful season as conference champions! Your coaches are extremely proud of you!
