Men’s BasketBall ends season In nIt Cleveland State had its season come to an end in the opening round of the 2012 National Invitational Tournament with a 76-65 setback at Stanford. ItwasthefourthtimeinthelastfiveseasonsthatCSUplayedinthepostseason with one NCAA and three NIT berths. It was also just the seventhpostseasonappearanceall-timeinschoolhistorywithGaryWaters owning four of them. Jeremy Montgomery led the Vikings with 15 points, while TimKamczycscored13pointswithsevenrebounds.CSUwasdoneinbyaseason-high 21 turnovers that Stanford converted into 29 points. TheVikingsconcludedtheseasonwitha22-11mark,theninth20-winseasoninschoolhistory. The game was the final in the career of CSU’s four seniors -D’Aundray Brown, Trey Harmon, Montgomery and Aaron Pogue.Together,thequartethelpedCSUtothreepostseasonappearances(1NCAA and 2NIT), whileMontgomery leaves the programwith 91careervictories,tiedforthemostinschoolhistory.

WOMEN’S TENNIS The Vikings will begin Horizon League play this Friday (March 23), when they travel to Detroit for a 7:00 p.m. contest at the Franklin Athletic Club. CSU enters the week with an 8-7 record after post-ing a 1-2 mark during its Spring Training Trip to Florida. Cleveland State’s lone victory last week came against Albany, as the Vikings defeated the Great Danes, 5-2. The Vikings also faced Florida Atlantic (L, 4-3) and Embry-Riddle (L, 6-3) during their trip to Florida. Nicole Janek and Mengdi Liu both went 3-0 in singles action last week, while Janek was also a per-fect 3-for-3 in doubles matches teaming with Maria Lazaris. Entering league play Janek has a team-best 12-3 record during the spring season, while Janek and Alex Power both have 17 total wins this year.

SOFTBALL The Vikings went 5-3 at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. last week with two of the three losses coming in extra innings. Dara Toman sparked the offense with a .417 (10-24) batting average over the eight-game stretch, including four doubles, three home runs, eight runs and nine RBI. Sara Shields clubbed her first homer in a Viking uniform in Kissimmee and recorded four wins in the circle while posting 29 strikeouts and a 3.12 ERA in six appearences.

MEN’S TENNIS Cleveland State will open up its Horizon League portion of the schedule this Friday (March 23), as the Vikings are set to face Detroit at 7:00 p.m. Fri-day’s match will take place at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, Mich. Entering the week, CSU has a 5-8 record after dropping three hard-fought matches during the Spring Training Trip to Florida. Last week the Vikings faced Stetson (L, 7-0), Florida Atlantic (L, 4-3) and Embry-Riddle (L, 7-0), with Matt Kuelker, Nolan Marks and Matt Ford picking up the singles wins against Florida Atlantic. Kuelker also paired up with Jorg van der Vloet to notch a No. 3 doubles victory against Florida At-lantic, while the duo of Ford and Yannick Goossens picked up a win at No. 2 doubles against Embry-Riddle. Ford has a team-leading 8-5 singles record dur-ing the spring season, while Marks has posted a 7-5 record through the first 13 matches. Overall, Marks leads the Vikings with 12 wins on the season, with Ford and Kuelker each notching 11 and van der Vlo-et posting 10.

MEN’S GOLF Cleveland State continues its spring schedule when the Vikings compete in the UCF Rio Pinar In-vitational on Monday and Tuesday (March 19-20). The Vikings opened the spring season by com-peting in the Benbow Invitaitonal in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 13-14. Jon Riemer paced the Vi-kings, tying for 14th place overall with rounds of 72-75 (147). CSU opened with a 304, but took 10 shots off in the second round, carding a 294 behind a one-under-par 70 from Andrew Bailey and an even-par 71 from Michael Klaric.

WOMEN’S GOLF The Vikings are out of action until CSU com-petes in the Butler Spring Invitational (Mar. 26-27). CSU opened the spring season at the Benbow Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 12-13, carding rounds of 330 and 334. Ariel Sparrow tied for 19th place overall, firing rounds of 76-84 (160), while Micaela Cronin and Madeline Kaminski tied for 35th place. Cronin shot 87-80, while Kaminski carded rounds of 80-87. Playing as an individual, Shelly Ford tied for 28th place at 165 (84-81).

laSt WeekJanek led the Vikings with a perfect 6-0 record during singles and doubles action over their three-match Spring Training Trip. Janek, who has a team-best 12-3 record this spring, posted her first victory at No. 5 singles against Embry-Riddle and fol-lowed that up with a win at No. 4 singles against Florida Atlantic. Her final singles win came against Albany, also at the No. 4 position. In doubles play, Janek teamed up with Maria Lazaris to claim a pair of wins at No. 2 doubles and a victory at the No. 3 spot. The duo has a 5-1 record this spring, which is tops among all Cleveland State doubles teams.
