THE GREAT RIVERS OF EUROPEThe Rhine and the moselleThe Germans refer respectfully to their longest and most important river as “Father Rhine.” The Rhine is one of Europe’s major arteries; 820 miles long from its source in the Swiss Alps to the North Sea at Rotterdam. An international waterway, the river runs through six countries and forms an international border in several places. Castles are an unmistakeable feature of the river and most of Germany’s vineyards owe their existence to the Rhine. Through its tributary, the Main River, it is connected to the Danube by the Main-Danube Canal.

Another tributary of the Rhine, the Moselle flows through France, Luxembourg and Germany. Its landscape comprises of meadows and plains, lakes and forests, dotted with picturesque villages. In the Middle Ages, aristocrats and monks settled along the Moselle and founded vineyards, many of which still exist. Riesling, in particular, flourishes on its steep slopes.

The mainFrom the Rhine you can join the Main River near Mainz and travel through beautiful Bavarian countryside, alongside cities and towns including Frankfurt, Würzburg, Bamberg and Nuremberg. In former times, the river was primarily used by rafts carrying wood downstream to the Rhine. From the 19th century, chain shipping was a feature of navigation. Today, the Main and the Main-Danube Canal form an important link between the Rhine and the Danube, from where ships can sail on to the Black Sea.

The DanubeSince ancient Celtic times, the Danube, flowing through nearly 1,800 miles of central Europe, has fascinated and attracted. It brought legions of Romans, Mongols and Turks and has been a central player in Europe’s sweeping history from the Habsburg Dynasty to the 20th century. Beginning in the Black Forest region of Germany, it flows to the Black Sea through more European countries than any other: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. Its strategic location makes the Danube important to central Europe, and its beauty makes it one of the most popular rivers.

The Rhône and the SaôneRising high in the Swiss Alps, the fast moving Rhône flows into Lake Geneva and then south through south-eastern France to the Mediterranean Sea. 300 miles in length, the Rhône joins the Saône at Lyon where it becomes navigable. The countryside on both sides of the river comprises rich farmland and vineyards that produce the grapes for the region’s renowned wines.

The lovely countryside of the Saône is mainly farming country with green meadows broken by rows of poplars and charming villages and towns, many with medieval centres. Since ancient times, the Saône has played an important role in the economic development of the whole region. A series of recently completed canals linking the Saône to the Rhine enables ships to traverse Europe from the North Sea all the way to the Mediterranean.

The Seine The name Seine is derived from the Latin word sequana, meaning ‘snake’. Look at a map and you will immediately see why the river was thus christened. It meanders snakelike through the interior of France and through beautiful countryside towards the Normandy coast and the English Channel. Between Paris and the sea the Seine measures nearly 240 miles, but the distance as the crow flies is only 110 miles. In Paris, countless bridges span the Seine (there are more than 30 in the city centre alone), each with its own unique appearance.

The jewel of the Rhine, take a tour though Cologne, visiting the Old Town, St. Martin’s Church and Cologne Cathedral. Known as The Dom, this Gothic cathedral, with its iconic spires and stained glass windows, is the largest in northern Europe and a World Heritage site. Spend a leisurely afternoon exploring this lovely city with its Roman Tower, Renaissance City Hall, old Jewish Mikvah (ritual bathhouse) and inviting dockside cafes and bars. See Marksburg Castle, a 700-year-old fortress, which has changed little over the years. Bamberg has a beautifully-preserved medieval city centre and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town is also famous for its breweries and taverns where you can relax and enjoy a glass of the local smoke-flavoured beer, Rauchbier.

The Volga-Baltic WaterwaySix years after founding St. Petersburg, efforts began to connect the city with Russia’s interior using the existing rivers and lakes between the new capital and Moscow. More than 200 years later, with the completion of major canals in the 1930s and modernisation in the 1960s, you can now journey easily between the two great cities.Towns that were long hidden behind the Iron Curtain are now accessible, their impressive monasteries, churches, museums and kremlins, restored and open to the public.

Your cruise follows the Volga-Baltic Waterway, an intricate system of lakes, rivers, reservoirs and canals that links the Volga with the Baltic Sea. The Waterway’s course follows (1) the Neva River, (2) a canal along the shore of Lake Ladoga, (3) the Svir River, (4) a canal along the shore of the Lake Onega, (5) the Vytegra Canal to Lake Beloye (6) the Kovzha River and (7) the Sheksna River, for a total length of about 700 miles.

The Neva River is a short river, around 43 miles long, that flows from Lake Ladoga, Europe’s largest lake, through St.Petersburg into the Gulf of Finland, an arm of the Baltic Sea. Along its route, small settlements and dachas (villas) dot the banks and in many places life has changed little over the centuries.

Lake Ladoga is Europe’s largest lake, stretching 124 miles in length and 75 miles wide into northern Russia and the Kaelian forests. It is known for its contrasts: deep waters in the north and craggy islands, but shallow in the south with sandy beaches. Because the lake’s surface lies frozen during winter, it served as a road during the WWII siege of Leningrad, enabling transport of supplies into the city and providing a means for refugees to escape, hence its nickname “Street of Life.”

The Svir River or “Blue Way” flows 140 miles from Lake Onega, Europe’s second largest freshwater lake, into Lake Ladoga. Rich in fish, including salmon and trout, the river is surrounded by lush pine forests.

Lake Onega has more than 50 rivers feeding into it, and there are over 1,300 islands in the lake, including Kizhi Island with its famous open-air museum of wooden architecture. Natural beauty and wildlife contribute to the attraction of the Onega region, the lake is renowned for its misty sunrises and beautiful autumn colours.

The Vytegra Canal has more than eight locks and eight hydroelectric power stations. Dense forests shroud the banks, interrupted by picturesque villages with brightly painted wooden houses. The Vytegra region is famous for lumber production and logging barges and sawmills are common sights.

Kovzha River connects the Vytegra Canal with Lake Beloye. There are some places where the forest was flooded long ago and only the skeletons of trees project from the water. The Kovzha flows into Lake Beloye (White Lake).

The Sheksna River flows out of Lake Beloye. The name Sheksna is derived from the Finnish language and means “the tributary covered in sedge.”

The Volga River. At nearly 2,500 miles long, the Volga is Europe’s longest river. From its source in the remote Valdai Hills it winds its way towards Yaroslavl, eventually flowing into the Caspian Sea. The river enjoys mythological status, having been serenaded and honoured in poems, paintings and music.

The Hermitage features more than three million items, including works from Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Matisse and Rubens as well as Cézanne, Van Gogh and Picasso. Your afternoon

is free to spend at your leisure before enjoying an early dinner, followed by an evening performance of traditional Russian ballet or opera.

On your last day in this magnificent city, enjoy free time to see the sights that interest you. DAY 5 SCENIC WATERWAYS & MANDROGY

Spend a relaxing day cruising Russia’s intricate waterways. Sail the Neva River and cross Lake Ladoga, Europe’s largest lake. Cruise the Svir River to Mandrogy where you have time to explore this museum village. Visit the vodka museum or shop for handmade Russian crafts. For a (literally) immersive experience join an

optional visit to a Russian bath house, the banya. Continue along the Svir’s 139-mile ‘Blue Route’ towards Lake Onega.


DAY 6 KIZHI

Cruise though the early morning along the tranquil waters of Lake Onega, Europe’s second largest lake. Arrive during breakfast at the island village of Kizhi. Enjoy a walking tour through the Open Air Museum of Architecture, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This collection of ancient Russian wooden houses, windmills and churches features the famous three-tiered Preobranzhenskaya (Transfiguration) Church – a fairytale-like structure built in 1714 without a single nail.

DAY 7 KIRILLO-BELOZERSKY MONASTERY

Cruise the Volga-Baltic Waterway; spanning 229 miles and seven locks, it links the Volga River with the Baltic Sea. Arrive in Kuzino, a typical Russian village. Take a guided walk through the historic Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, and see small wooden chapels, the Assumption Cathedral and a museum. Or, see the Monastery followed by the afternoon in a Russian province, visiting a children’s art school and restoration workshop.

DAY 8 YAROSLAVL

Arrive in Yaroslavl, one of the Golden Ring cities; a group of historically significant cities northeast of Moscow. The city’s riverside promenade is one of the finest along the Volga, bordered by a picturesque greenbelt known as Lime Tree Avenue. Take a stroll through the covered food market, or join an excursion to the Governor’s Palace, a living museum of Russian art, history and culture. Or visit the Church of St. Elijah the Prophet, one of the city’s most beautiful churches, featuring icons and detailed frescoes of prophets Elijah and Isaiah – some of the best examples of old Russian art. Shop for handcrafted gifts before returning aboard for dinner.

DAY 9 UGLICH

After breakfast, take a walking tour through the provincial village of Uglich, another Golden Ring city, and a favourite city of Ivan the Terrible. Visit the Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood where Ivan the Terrible’s son Dmitry was mysteriously killed. The nine-year-old Dmitry is portrayed as a saint in frescoes depicting his murder. Afterwards, enjoy tea and conversation with a local family in their home.

DAY 10 MOSCOW CANAL & MOSCOW

The city was founded by Uri Dolgoruki, Grand Prince of Suzdal and Kiev, and the first written reference to Moscow dates to 1147. You can, if you wish, join an optional excursion to Sergiev Posad, a glorious Golden Ring city with important Russian Orthodox monasteries. Or take a morning tour of the Cosmonaute Museum and trace the history of space exploration. Alternatively,

visit the Military Museum with Red Army veterans and explore Russia’s military history. Dine aboard, then relax – or take an optional Moscow by Night tour.


DAY 12 MOSCOW

Visit the Kremlin, see its many tall towers and elegant palaces and tour inside one of the brightly coloured cathedrals. At the centre of the Kremlin, amid a sea of domes, is Cathedral Square. The Cathedral of the Assumption was once the most important church in the country; here both the Czars and the metropolitans (archbishops) of the Orthodox Church were crowned. The afternoon is free for you to relax and further explore Moscow or admire the fine art in the Tretyakov Gallery before returning to your ship for a Farewell Dinner.

Continue cruising this scenic stretch through Xiling Gorge, the longest of the Three Gorges. After lunch, disembark for a tour of the remarkable Three Gorges Dam, the largest hydroelectric power station in the world. Learn what the dam means to the Chinese people, and the Yangtze. Return to your ship to sail through the five-stage locks of the Three Gorges Dam.

DAy 6 ThrEE GOrGEs AND lEssEr ThrEE GOrGEs

Cruise through Wu (Witches) Gorge, renowned for its magnificent scenery with mist-shrouded mountains and the legendary Twelve Peaks, including the beautiful Shennu Feng (Goddess Peak) topped by a naturally

sculpted rock resembling a maiden looking down at the river. Then board a smaller boat for an excursion through the Lesser Three Gorges that lie on the Daning River. Narrower than the great Three Gorges, these remarkable canyons are equally impressive. Sheer cliffs and steep mountains rise on either side and clear water flows between towering peaks covered with lush greenery. There are a number of historical sites, including the

hanging coffins of the Ba people and the ancient plank road carved into the cliff side. The plank road consists of more than 6,000 holes, about two inches in circumference carved by hand into the sides of the cliffs. Wooden stakes inserted into the holes supported bamboo pipes to carry brine and planks that created a road stretching more than 60 miles along the river. Return aboard for lunch, and spend the afternoon sailing through Qutang Gorge, the shortest, narrowest and most spectacular of the Three Gorges.

Visit Shibaozhai Temple, a Qing Dynasty architectural masterpiece that was built in 1650. Translated as ‘Precious Stone Fortress’, the temple has been constructed without nails. Perched atop a sheer, 721-foot high cliff, the 12-storey red pavilion offers breathtaking views of the river below. The temple once stood alone and was inaccessible except by chain lift.

DAy 8 ChONGQiNG AND XiAN

After breakfast, disembark and enjoy a brief tour of Chongqing, the largest city in western China. Visit Chongqing Zoo to see the giant pandas and other exotic species. After lunch, fly to Xian, key city of the Tang Dynasty. From 618 to 907 AD, this dynasty presided over one of China’s most glorious cultural periods. Have dinner and relax at your hotel, or enjoy an optional Tang Dynasty Dinner and Show.

DAy 9 XiAN AND BEiJiNG

Xian’s history stretches back more than 3,100 years and it was China’s capital city for 12 imperial dynasties. It reached its peak during the glorious period of Tang Dynasty rule. Once one of the world’s biggest and richest cities, Xian is the geographic beginning of China’s fabled Silk Road. The city is encircled by the

most complete ancient city wall in China, and is home to what is possibly China’s greatest archaeological treasure, the Qin Mausoleum. Here, Emperor Qin Shi Huang was entombed 2,000 years ago, with thousands of life-sized terracotta warriors. He was just 13 years old

(246 BC) when work began on this extraordinary mausoleum. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, each warrior and horse has its own distinctive features. Equally impressive is the size – the home of the Tang Dynasty covers more than 19 square miles. After lunch in Xian, fly to Beijing, China’s imperial capital. Check in to your hotel and enjoy some free time.

NOTiFiCATiONInformation contained in Viking River Cruises brochures, website or advertising materials (“Viking Advertising”) is not an offer or a contract. Cruises / tours and air fare offers herein are listed in Australian dollar currency and are only available for sale to Australian and New Zealand residents. The transportation of guests and baggage on all river cruise vessels is provided solely by the operator and is governed by the terms and conditions printed on the Passenger Ticket Contract. For complete information on terms and conditions, itinerary, liability of Viking River Cruises, Inc., liability limits and all sections mentioned below, refer to the Passenger Ticket Contract. PAyMENT POliCyA non-refundable deposit of $1,500 per person is required to secure a confirmed reservation within 7 days of making the cruise / tour reservation. When more than one cruise is booked, deposit and payment policies apply per cruise.

The final balance is due no later than 120 days prior to sailing. Important Notice: Promotions or offers may have different payment terms, please refer to the offer conditions specified when making the booking.

CANCEllATiON POliCyFor any cruise booking, whether under deposit, partially paid, or paid in full, the following travel agent or guest requested situations are considered cancellations and penalties will apply as noted below: changes to departure date; substitutions of itinerary; substitution of another person for original booked guest(s); or changing to a promotional fare. All cancellations must be in writing.

The following cancellation charges will be assessed for all written cancellations received prior to departure up to the scheduled time of departure.

rEVisiONs/ChANGEsOnce a cruise booking has a deposit, all changes are subject to a $30 charge per change. See prior section under Cancellation Policy for additional details on situations which are classified as cancellations rather than changes.

DOCUMENTsDocuments will be issued approximately 3 weeks prior to departure. All early document requests will be charged a $25 early processing fee. All guests are required to fill out a Passenger Information Form (PIF) by final pay date. PIF is found on www.vikingrivercruises.com.au or by contacting Viking River Cruises 1800 829 138 (Australia) and 0800 447 913 (New Zealand).

TrANsFErsWhen you purchase international air fares from Viking River Cruises, airport transfers are included in your air cost if air arrival and departure dates coincide with the first and the last day and destination of the cruise/tour itinerary. If guests arrive and depart of different dates to these, then airport transfers are not included. There is no cash refund for unused airport transfers. Guests who are not arriving or departing to the destination on the first and the last date of the cruise/tour itinerary will have to make their own way to the hotel or vessel at their own expense.

TrAVEl DOCUMENTATiON/VisAsAll guests must have passports valid for six months following disembarkation and necessary visas when boarding. Guests are advised to check with their travel agent or the Australian or New Zealand Consulate Service to determine which documents they must obtain. If incorrect documents are obtained, guests will be unable to participate in particular shore excursions and may be denied boarding and/or entry into certain countries. Note: Due to airline security measures, your passport name must match your airline ticket name or you may be denied boarding. Viking River Cruises accepts no responsibility for obtaining required visas nor for advising guests of passport, visa or other immigration requirements.

hEAlThYou must ensure you are aware of any health requirements for your travel and ensure that you carry all necessary vaccination documentation. Guests are advised to check with their travel agent to determine if any vaccinations or health documents are required.

ChilDrEN/MiNOrsDue to the nature of our cruise itineraries, Viking River Cruises does not maintain facilities or services for children aboard river cruise vessels. On all cruises and cruise journeys, minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied and share a stateroom with a parent, legal guardian or other responsible adult over the age of 21. We reserve the right to limit the number of minors under the age of 18 years on board.

DisABlED GUEsTsYou must report any disability requiring special attention while on your Viking River Cruises itinerary to Viking at the time the reservation is made. All vessels and motorcoaches are equipped to European standards. Most transportation services, including the vessels and motorcoaches, are not equipped with elevators or wheelchair ramps. Viking will make reasonable attempts to accommodate the special needs of disabled travellers, but is not responsible in the event it is unable to do so nor is it responsible for any denial of services by vessel operators, air carriers, hotels, restaurants or other independent suppliers. We regret that we cannot provide individual assistance to a holiday participant for walking, dining, getting on and off vessels, motorcoaches and other vehicles, or other personal needs. A qualified and physically able companion must accompany

travellers who need such assistance and must assume full responsibility for their well-being. The guest assumes the full risk of use and of any prohibitions imposed by vendors. Motorized scooters are not typically suitable on international cruises.

GrATUiTiEs/TiPsShipboard gratuities for shipboard personnel and local guides are included in your cruise fare on Viking River Cruises Europe, Russia, and Ukraine cruise / tour programs. Shipboard gratuities are included in our China itineraries. Gratuities for Program Directors are included on Viking River Cruises Russia, Ukraine and China itineraries. Additional tipping is at the guest’s discretion.

All arrangements made for guests with independent contractors, including medical services, are made solely for convenience to participants and are done at the participant’s own risk. ADVANCED, CANCEllED Or DElAyED sAiliNGViking River Cruises, Inc. reserves the right to withdraw and/or cancel a cruise or to make changes in the itinerary and hotel accommodations whenever, in its sole judgment, or in the judgment of the vessel owner or operator, conditions warrant it. In the event of charters of the vessels, truces, lockouts, riots or stoppage of labour from whatever cause or for any other reason whatsoever, the owner or operator of the vessels identified in this brochure may, at any time, cancel, advance or postpone any scheduled cruise and may, but is not obliged to, substitute another vessel or itinerary and shall not be liable for any loss whatsoever to guests by reason of any such cancellation, advancement or postponement.
