Corner

How is your Christmas going? Have you bought all the gifts and made people surrounding you happy? Have you received the gifts you wanted and are you happy?

While we make Christmas a mundane celebration of giving and receiving gifts, Christmas is the story of God deciding to enter humanity in order to bring us

salvation. Our culture and set of values want a king to be born in a luxury hospital and live in magnificent castles. Jesus wasn’t born in such a setting. God decided that a peasant girl would be his mother and a man of faith would serve him as father figure. There would be no room available for them at the inn. A stable would be their deliv-ery room and a manger would serve him as cradle. Jesus is born with-out the prestige so important in the human ladder of evaluation. He is born like an animal.

What is wrong with this picture?

The Gospel of Luke, while providing much more detail than Mark, still keeps us in the dark regarding certain details about Jesus’ birth. It doesn’t tell us who cut the umbilical cord for Jesus. Was Joseph the one who did it? Did Mary yell or suffer during labor? Was the delivery an easy one? Was the inn so busy no one wondered why this couple was in the stable? Did they have a midwife assisting them?

Sometimes, life is too busy for us to care about others, but as Chris-tians, that is what we are being challenged to do. We cannot spend Christmas this year, so absorbed by our own comfort, that we cele-brate without thinking about all those families whose children were taken away from them at the border. We must be thinking about and

praying for the mother of the child who died because she was not cared for, to find comfort. We cannot celebrate Christmas without hav-ing in mind those modern day Mary’s dreaming that their children will have a better life but end up in front of a wall built to block them. We are challenged also to call our elected officials to do the right thing and be accountable.

I deeply believe that Jesus did not select a wealthy and rich family as his because he wanted us to know God has taken sides and is sided with the oppressed and the marginalized. Jesus was not inside in the warm cozy ambiance of the hotel; he was born outside in the cold among animals that depend on God’s generosity to survive. Although whenever we do a little good deed, we want to take a megaphone and hold a press conference to let people know what we have done, Jesus is among those who have to fill out long application forms to receive a little help. Mary today is a Black woman who went to receive service and saw her child being snatched from her by police officers. Jesus, who describes himself as someone with no place to lay his back, is all of those without a place to sleep and forced to sleep in the streets and in the cold, whether it rains or snows.

Christmas this year finds thousands of people waiting to be processed at the border because there is no will to let them in and the registra-tion rules keep changing. They are not at the borders by their own choice. Their countries have been upside down because of the unlim-ited appetite of superpower countries and local leaders they manage to corrupt. Poverty is what they are fleeing from. Today we are invited by Luke to look at who is Augustus? and who is Jesus? Who is Mary? Who is Joseph? Who are the shepherds? Who are the rulers? And who are the victims?

Because evil is committed to oppose the plan of God, Christians must be committed also to stand against oppressive systems whose sole pur-pose is to rob people of their dignity. Christmas is to celebrate peace on earth. Not only a horizontal peace (peace between peers) but

vertical peace between God and God’s creation.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. . . But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 9:6; 53:5) If modern Christmas has become consumerism, waste, slaughter, intoxi-cation and gambling, Christmas real purpose is to celebrate and remem-ber that God, by giving us Jesus, made peace with us. In this gift, he has let go of any resentment, all vindictiveness and all retribution. That gift is also an invitation for us to work to achieve the same. We achieve peace when we right our wrongs; when, we make room in our hearts to receive Jesus, for he is not interested in finding room at the inn. He is looking to inhabit our hearts so that we can surrender to his peace and love and make the world a place where God’s people can live in peace. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas!

The Officiant begins with the Service of Light on pages 109-112, and continues with the appointed Psalmody. The church is dark, or partially so, when the service is to begin. All stand, and the Officiant greets the people with these words.

Light and Peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

The following Short Lesson of Scripture is read:

Jesus said, "You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be

hid. No one lights a lamp to put it under a bucket, but on a lamp-stand

where it gives light for everyone in the house. And you, like the lamp,

must shed light among your fellow men, so that they may see the deed you

do, and give glory to your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16

The Officiant then says the Prayer for Light using the following prayer, first saying

Let us pray.

Grant us, Lord, the lamp of charity which never fails, that it may burn in

us and shed its light on those around us, and that by its brightness we may

have a vision of that holy City, where dwells the true and never-failing

Light, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lighting of the Candle of Christ

During the candle-lighting, an appropriate anthem or psalm may be sung, or silence kept.

Reader: "While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her

child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him

in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger" (Luke 2:7).

Reader: Tonight, angels far and near sing tender lullabies; well-worn

fabric full of years holds in the warmth of parental love;

animals and shepherds crowd in tight, glowing with adoration,

while a muffled cry squeezes out to greet the world.

People: Tonight we give thanks for every child among us. Each new

birth regardless of circumstances reminds us of the

preciousness of life, the potential of tomorrow, the promise

Reader: On this Christmas Eve, we light the Christ candle for the child-

King, the infant-Redeemer, the lowly-Lord. And now we know.

He is born and nothing will ever be the same!

The candles at the Altar are now lit, as are other candles and lamps as may be convenient. The following hymn is then sung

O gracious light,

Pure brightness of the ever living Father in heaven,

O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,

And our eyes behold the vesper light,

We sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,

O Son of God, O Giver of Life,

And to be glorified through all the worlds.

THE FIRST READING

Isaiah 9:2-7

Every imaginable wrong, every smudge and bit of darkness, will be wiped away by God’s cleansing, completing, gentle hand.

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us;

authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace

for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it

with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Titus 2:11-14

God in Jesus Christ enables our free will and makes our transformation possible. Grace, compassion, kindness, all the fruits of the Spirit, are birthed in us through God’s work.

A reading from the Letter of Paul to Titus:

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to

renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives

that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed

hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus

Christ.

He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity

and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

THE GOSPEL

Luke 2:1-14 (15-20)

God uses for his plan and great glory even the inconvenient and downright evil workings of oppressive governments.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to LUKE

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world

should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while

Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be

registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to

Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended

from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary,

to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were

there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her

firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger,

because there was no place for them in the inn.

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over

their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the

glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel

said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see-- I am bringing you good news of

great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a

Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will

find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly

there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God

and saying,

and on earth peace among those whom he favors!"

[When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said

to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has

taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with

haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When

they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child;

and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But

Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The

shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and

Poverty is what they are fleeing from. Today we are invited by Luke to look at who is Augustus? and who is Jesus? Who is Mary? Who is Joseph? Who are the shepherds? Who are the rulers? And who are the victims?

Because evil is committed to oppose the plan of God, Christians must be committed also to stand against oppressive systems whose sole purpose is to rob people of their dignity. Christmas is to celebrate peace on earth. Not only a horizontal peace (peace between peers) but vertical peace between God and God’s creation.

Celebration: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. . . But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 9:6; 53:5)

If modern Christmas has become consumerism, waste, slaughter, intoxication and gambling, Christmas real purpose is to celebrate and remember that God, by giving us Jesus, made peace with us. In this gift, he has let go of any resentment, all vindictiveness and all retribution. That gift is also an invitation for us to work to achieve the same. We achieve peace when we right our wrongs; when, we make room in our hearts to receive Jesus, for he is not interested in finding room at the inn. He is looking to inhabit our hearts so that we can surrender to his peace and love and make the world a place where God’s people can live in peace.

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself,

and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death,

you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation
