School News January 2018 Welcome back everyone Congratulations to Lucas Thornes and Stuart Deacon who both received their chief scout awards recently. Assemblies Ms. McElhinney took our first assembly of the year, which was based on New Year’s Resolutions. 4 th Class led our second assembly about being good to the environment. The credit Union Quiz took place this month. Around the Classrooms

This month Junior Infants have been

making lots of discoveries!  They explored what magnets like to stick to and how to play games using magnets.

They also talked about and sorted different materials, wood, plastic, metal, stone and fabric. They made a lovely display of their materials collages. They tried out new challenge cards in Construction, look at the amazing building we did! 

Senior Infants have been working very hard this month and started by making some New Year’s Resolutions. In Maths, they have been busy exploring length and doing lots of measuring. In Art, they made lovely lions and some octopus mobiles to decorate the classroom. They were also learning all about life on

the farm with Farmer Ted!  

1stClass have been exploring forces in Science. They predicted whether various objects would sink or float. Then they worked in groups as they dropped them into the water to test them. Next, they designed their own boats using maurla and they tested to see how many marbles it could hold before sinking!They did lots of painting in Art this month and in Maths, they have been busy counting money and learning about tens and units.  They really enjoyed their music trip to the Ark Theatre. They loved listening to the trad music by ‘Socks in the Frying Pan’ who taught them the difference between a jig and a reel. They sang along sometimes and they even had fun dancing to some of the tunes!

   

 

 

2ndClass have had a busy January. They have been learning about the Arctic and

Antarctic regions. They learned a lot about the animals that live in the two regions and chose their favourite ones to make using clay. They made beautiful paintings of the Antarctic and drew penguins. They explored a number of different instruments and had a great time in the

Ark theatre with First Class listening to Socks in the Frying Pan playing traditional Irish music. In Maths, they have been learning about money and in Irish, they have been learning all about Bia.January has been a very busy month for 3rdClass with lots of fantastic learning taking place!  In Maths, they have had great fun

exploring the topics of length and weight. This included helping Willy Wonka solve some chocolate-themed word problems and participating in the Length Olympics! In English, the class wrote fantastic recounts of their Christmas holidays! They definitely

made Mr. Jones jealous of all the fun things they got up to and all the amazing presents Santa brought them! They are also in the process of exploring Persuasive Writing and are learning how to give an opinion and explain it effectively. In History, they have been extremely hardworking creating e-books on the Ancient Egyptians that we can't wait to present! They have also created beautiful Pharaoh necklaces and are in the process of making very interesting Canopic Jars! 

The children in 4thClass have been learning lots of interesting things this month. In Science, they have been learning about rocks. Some of the children have started their own rock collections.In Geography, they have been learning about climate change and global warming. They had lots of fun preparing for their school assembly based on the environment.

5thClass have published their narrative stories this month. They are really pleased with the results and definitely have some future authors in the class!They have created a wall of

compliments for SPHE. They wrote about all the lovely things they think of one another.They are working on their dream houses in Irish and are getting very inventive with their ideas. They have also started a 'Cycle Safety' course in Malahide Castle. They are learning about how to cycle safely on the roads and are really enjoying it so far.

6thClass have had a very busy January. They have been learning all about internet safety in S.P.H.E. and focused on how to engage in appropriate behaviour when using social media apps. 

They learned all about World War 1 in History and the children imagined what it would have been like to fight in the trenches. They pretended they were soldiers and nurses during the Battle of the Somme and wrote letters home to their loved ones. They started learning about figurative language techniques in English and started with personification. The children also published some excellent stories. They did a great job designing the covers!They learned about the workings of the human eye in Science and designed and made pinhole cameras. The results were very cool! They also drew optical illusion pictures in art, which trick the eye.
