As you read, think about this question: “What would this person think about having a fish farm or an oil rig near the island?” After the reading, fill in the chart below the bio using quotes that you find particularly interesting that help answer this question. Government Officials (2-4) Common Characteristics: You are elected officials chosen for your abilities to represent the community as a whole. As a group, you realize that there are increasing tensions on the island that are becoming difficult to balance. Unemployment is on the rise; the population is increasing; the environment is becoming less pristine. Many residents are complaining about the lack of steady work, the sporadic nature of seasonal tourism, and the dwindling fishing economy. Citizens want steady, rather than seasonal work, and higher wages. Government Officials (2-4)

Common Characteristics:You are elected officials chosen for your abilities to represent the community as a whole. As a group, you realize that there are increasing tensions on the island that are becoming difficult to balance. Unemployment is on the rise; the population is increasing; the environment is becoming less pristine. Citizens want steady, rather than seasonal work, and higher wages. especially because of their ability to consider all sides of issues; put fairness first; and genuinely listen to concerns of the citizens. Your jurisdiction only includes the city limits of the island’s town, but the office potentially influences decisions made on the entire island. You are often seen volunteering at the local food bank and connecting face-to-face with community members. Relationships with community members are highly valued by the mayor’s office and you are consistently available for people to come in and voice their concerns. The mayor and vice mayor moderate the town council. You will make sure that people follow the rules and norms of the meeting; that everyone’s voice is heard; that people are respectful and professional; and that any decisions are made by a fair vote. You will also lead the drafting of either a conditions of approval document or a rationale for rejection for each proposal.

Educational background:

The Mayor has a bachelor's degree in environmental science and has worked for scientists doing field research. The Mayor got into local politics to help protect the island's ecosystem, but now has to balance the many different viewpoints of the residents.

The Vice-Mayor has a bachelor's degree in business with a minor in economics. The Vice-Mayor wants a healthy island economy, but feels that eco-tourism needs to be sustained as part of that economy.
