Col Walker From an early age (about 5), I have always been around music. My dad had quite a variety of sounds ranging from the Platters, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Glenn Miller, Johnny Mathis, Beach Boys, Frankie Valli – All good harmonies and proper musical support (No synthesised crap here!).Anyway, about the age of 10 (1968 ish), on our large annual family holiday to Butlins, in one of the camp pubs/clubs I heard a song that to me had everything … This Old Heart of Mine by the Isley Brothers. My mum bought the single for me on the UK Tamla Motown label. I had seen this label before somewhere amongst my dad’s records. I had a look and found more … The Temptations, Supremes, Miracles, etc.. Wow!  I was hooked.

Chisser It started for me in 1961 having a dance with Denise Anks to lets Twist Again, by Chubby Checker at Sutton Nash school's Christmas Party, this became my first record, on the Green Columbia label DB4961 followed by Sam Cooke's Chain Gang and the Drifters Save The last Dance For Me, and its been my vice ever since buying these little Black Gems. My first djing was about 1966 at Derbyhill youth club between the Band sets on Thursday nights.

On The Music Scene 5thJune 2015 R.I.P. Ben E. King (September 28, 1938 - April 30, 2015 aged 76)King was born Benjamin Earl Nelson on September 28, 1938 in Henderson, North

Carolina and sang in his church choir there; he soon moved to New York with his family at the age of nine, where he fell in with both local gospel and doo-wop groups. Always musically inclined and influenced heavily by R&B, and Gospel, he had a great baritone voice and made a reputation for himself so early that he was too young to join a group. While in High school he was asked to join the Moonglows, but he had to turn it down, and worked in

his father's restaurant as a singing waiter; but he still found time to sing Doo-Wop on the street corners with his friends and they called themselves the four Bs (He Said later That These days Were His Best) it was during this time that Lover Patterson, who headed a local doo-wop quintet called the Five Crowns, while dining there, he heard King singing while serving customers and, in need of a baritone, worked out a deal

The Five Crowns were considered one of Harlem's greatest doo-wop outfits, playing the legendary Apollo Theatre and opening for the already-established group The Drifters. When Drifters lead Clyde McPhatter left for a solo career, the group had trouble finding success -- that is, until their manager, George Treadwell, decided enough was enough and fired the entire group one night and renamed the Five Crowns as the Drifters. (In those days, owning the group name meant everything.) A year later, they were booked for recording sessions with the famous Lieber-Stoller songwriting and production team. For Atlantic Records King offered up a song he co-wrote called There Goes My Baby," and the new Drifter hits began. "There Goes My Baby," released 1959 He also sang lead on a succession of hits by the writing team of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, including "Save the Last Dance for Me", "This Magic Moment" "I Count the Tears".other notable tracks are Nobody But Me and Dance with Me King only recorded thirteen songs with The Drifters eleven as Lead vocals.

Treadwell the drifters Manager and Patterson never agreed on the financial benefits of being a Drifter, however, soon Patterson found a way to get King out of his contract with the Drifters and into a solo career. Patterson and King asked for royalties Treadwell and King couldn’t come to terms so King was not allowed any publics appearances or T.V. shows with the Drifters only studio work for Atlantic records his singing parts or lead roles when live were Lip Synched by Drifters member Charlie Thomas. King now left the Drifter in 1960

Now known as Ben E. King, he had taken the name king in honour of his favourite Uncle he released his third single, “Spanish Harlem,”ironically it had been written for the Drifters but they turned it down. King did a take in the Atlantic studio it was released in 1961 and struck gold, reaching#10 on the Atco imprint His next single was a rewrite Ben had made of a gospel song called "Lord, Stand by Me." Secularized as “Stand by Me” it was released in 1961 and went to #1 it established Ben's legacy forevermore. A string of similar minor R&B hits followed, his next big record was “Don’t play That Song Again” released 1962 reaching #11 his next hit was “The Record(Baby I Love You)” it reached #24 then , “What can a Man Do” was released 1964.

“What Is Soul” released in1966 from the same named L.P. peaked at #38 other tracks include “Cry No More” released 1965 which didn’t chart She’s Gone Again 1965, Katherine, / Teeny Weeny Bit released 1967 “Goodnight My Love”/ (the B side is the Northern Fav ) “I Can’t Break The News To Myself”, released 1965, “Swear By The Stars Above”, released in 1966 the Lp was not released in America it has become a sought after album, and a must for the soul afficiendo.

In 1968 he recorded “Soul Meeting” Atlantic 2530 with the Soul Clan which comprised of Ben E. King, Solomon Burke, Arthur Conley, Don Covey and Joe Tex. King had a crossover smash in 1975 with the funky

Page 6: viewThe Sidac . 5. th. June 2015 issue . Sixth one of the year and I think we are getting back to norm. Tonight we have resident DJ, Freddie T. back and also Guest DJ Col ...

"Supernatural Thing," He also recorded an album in 1977 with the Scottish Group Average White Band entitled Benny and Us He was entered in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1998) with the Drifters and into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame (1998, 2002) as Ben E. King. He returned to the spotlight in the late 1980s when Stand By Me was the theme song for Rob Reiner's film about boyhood friendship and was also used in a British TV commercial for Levi's jeans were it went to #1 in 14th Feb 1987.He has made around twenty original studio albums, he has had 12 Top 10 hits and 25 Top 40 hits from 1959 to 1986 he was still touring till recently with old friend Jimmy James and the Vagabonds. Gamble & Huff pt. 5The second album of 1975 by the MFSB was Philadelphia Freedom Tracks: Zach's Fanfare #2 / Get Down With The Philly Sound / Philadelphia Freedom / South Philly / Ferry Avenue / Interlude 1 // When Your Love Is Gone - Featuring Dexter Wansel / Morning Tears - Featuring Dexter Wansel / Brothers And Sisters / Smile Happy / The Zip

The album, kicks off with a short opening intro with Zachs Fanfare#2. Them it gets Down to the groove with namely titled “Get down to the Philly sound” bouncing along with Brass, guitars and strings repeating the riff a couple of times then it breaks into Zachs alto sax solo, with the rhythm section of Baker Harris & Young , and the brass coming back with the main riff. this gets the feet stomping. Track 3 Philadelphia Freedom. Opens with a Sax Blowing the main theme, backed by the rhythm section keeping a tapping tempo, towards the end the backing singers come in singing the title with the strings and eli with his guitar licks, then Zachs alto sax comes back with Earl Young on the high Hat and Cymble brill!

Track 4 Once again kicks off with a sax blowing the tune accompanied with Earl Young on the high hat, and the rhythm section swapping the roles , with the Brass section like two lead singers battling it out, and all the time the alto sax blarring away in the background. The track “Brothers and Sisters” is mainly strings and rhythm and the girl backing singer (named the Sweethearts)Nice sing a long tune. “Morning Tears” opens with Montana on vibes a sax comes in and drums then strings, on this tune Dexter Wansel plays on Organ & piano, which ends with alto and soprano sax fading away.

The track “The Zip” released PIL 3578 in 1975 – is very much like Brothers And Sisters.“Smile Happy” released in 1976 PIL 3583 with “When Your Love Is Gone” on the B side, is very different in a Balero style rhythm with congas and bongos starting the track and the steady staccato vibes and brass keeping on the beat and with the lush strings carrying it long interspursed with alto flute and drum taking it to the end. a really nice album but not as good as Universal love but a good 7 out of 10. Dexter Wansal who plays Organ and keyboards, later released his Album “Life On Mars” in 1976.

Billy Paul’s second album of the year was titled When love Is New. Yet the first side is really a social theme concept with Tracks like :- America (We Need The Light) , Dollar Circulate, and People Power. The tracks all move along nicely with the MFSB band. The love songs are all slowish “Want 'Cha Baby” Starts of very slow with a alto sax intro and Billy stating I want You Baby great philly jazzish track , “Let's Make A Baby” another great track with superb rhythms with gongas and bongos taking us long a seductive movement with Billy hypnotizing his new love with repeating come on come Baby lets do it, once again super Philly. Malorie 7mins long again top tune for the American charts it flows along with Bill singing about his new love’s qualitys with piano intro and light brass with backing singers singing Malorie Billy does a bit of jazz scatt singing. When Love Is New is the slowiest track starts with double bass then strings and jazz guitar. I like this album especially the slower tracks.

Dexter Gilman Wansel (born August 22, 1950) is an American keyboardist, raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He contributed to the development of the Philly Sound and worked with producers Gamble and Huff. Wansel led the musical group Yellow Sunshine, he has worked with Phyllis Hyman, The Jacksons, MFSB, Teddy Pendergrass, Patti Labelle, The Jones Girls, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Grover Washington Jr. and Lou Rawls, He wrote The Jones Girls song "Nights over Egypt" and Patti Labelle's 1983 #1 R&B hit, "If Only You Knew", with Cynthia Biggs. While Wansel was relatively unknown outside the U.S. many have suggested that his influence on pop music, as both a producer and performer in the mid-1970s, led to the development of new age soul and jazz funk. His most successful album was Life On Mars, released on the PIR in 1976. Wansel played keyboards, Derek Graves played bass guitar and session singer, Terri Wells, was on vocals. The remaining

sound was filled in by Dexter's rhythm section called The Planets featuring Darryl Brown, Calvin Harris, Bobby Malach, Al Harrison and Graves.

During the second half of the 1970s, space travel and sci-fi were important themes in the ambient U.S. culture and therefore in jazz funk, and were reflected in Dexter's titles and music. Listening to other tracks on the album, such as "Stargazer", "Theme from the Planets" and "Rings of Saturn", it can be seen that a space theme runs through his music. His "Funk Attack" on the 1979 album Time is Slipping Away and "I'll Never Forget (My Favorite Disco)" have stood the test of time. Instrumental arrangements appeared on his album Voyager (1978). In addition to this he presented a disco theme with "Disco Lights" from the album What The World is Coming To (1977); and jazz funk such as "Latin Love" on Voyager; or "Ode Infinitum" on What The World Is Coming To. But he was definitely not for the soul charts or even the English charts. Visit the club site www.sthelenssoulclub.co.uk for updates

Gamble & Huff pt. 5There was unrest at PIL and things were changing in artiste at Philly, they were soon going to lose The

Bluenotes and the 3 degrees plus most of MFSB band. And we were still hearing rumurs of what was going to happen to Teddy Pendergrass, somebody had to fill the gaps & lift the company feel good factor.

They looked at their options and settle for someone they had worked with earlier and had a good track record so they signed a top accomplished band, who had fallen on bad times and resurrected their act, they plummed for Archie Bell &The Drells. And signed them to their TSOP label and had record their first album in six years by the summer of 1975 titled "Dance Your Troubles Away"

side 11.) Let's Groove (Leon Huff John Whitehead Gene McFadden Victor Carstarphen) - 6:04 2.) I Could have Dance All Night   (Ron Tyson - Bunny Sigler - Alan Felder) - 2:43 3.) I Won't Leave You Honey, Never   (Ron Tyson - Bunny Sigler) - 9:02

(side 2) 1.) Dance Your Troubles Away (John Whitehead Gene McFadden Victor Carstarphen) - 6:21 2.) The Soul City Walk   (John Whitehead Gene McFadden Victor  Carstarphen) - 4:22 3.) Let's Go Disco (John Whitehead Gene McFadden Victor Carstarphen Leon Huff C. Gilbert) 3:46 4.) I Love You (John Whitehead Gene McFadden Victor  Carstarphen) - 4:05

Off course knowing Archie Bell there was going to be some dance tunes, Three tracks were taken for the singles charts Their first single on the TSOP label “I Could Dance All Night” / “King Of The Castle” ZS8 4767 Released on 14th June 1975 and reached a good #24 on the soul charts this is a great little sound finding the Drells in great form

Their next hit was “Soul City Walk” ZS8 4774 on 27th December 1975, it only reached #42 in the states yet gained a #13 in the uk charts. You always see this on the Best of Philly CDs. The last track pulled was released on 28th February1976 Let's Groove (Part 1) / Let's Groove (Part 2) ZS8 4775 this was a bigger hit reaching # 7 on the soul charts in the states, but never charted in the uk

There next single “Don’t Let love get You Down” only reached #49 on the US soul charts it was taken from their second album “Where Will You Go When the Party’s Over” PIR 81567which was the B side. All the tracks were written by Bunny Siglar MacFadden & Whitehead and Victor Carstarphen but it had low sales.

22There had been a few singles in early 1976 the O’Jays ” Living For The Week -End “ and Billy Paul’s “Let’s Make a Baby” and the underrated Anthony White “ I’m So Much In Love with You ” Pil 3590 Yet the Biggest Hit of 1976 was from another recent signed Star in Lou Rawls and straight away had a hit in the summer of 76 with “You’ll Never Find Another love like mine” released in June reaching # 1 in the US. Soul Charts and #2 in the US. POP charts, it reached #10 on the UK charts. Where ever you went in the hot summer of 1976 you heard this tune It was his First and only 1 Million seller. Yet Lou Rawls had been with Capital Records for 8years and had recorded 20 Albums released by them, he was a big friend of his stable recording mate Frank Sinatra, and Frank quoted saying lou had the Classiest &Silkiest chops in the business. He left Capitol in 1971 and later had 3 albums on MGM label .

Page 8: viewThe Sidac . 5. th. June 2015 issue . Sixth one of the year and I think we are getting back to norm. Tonight we have resident DJ, Freddie T. back and also Guest DJ Col ...

Yet now he was signed to Philadelphia International Label, and Gamble and Huff were over the Moon He was a Stalwart of classical singing a pedigree of the MOR soul and Jazz standards. His first Album was “All Things In Time” PIL 33957 released in 1976 it had nine tracks. The album reached #7 on the album charts and # 1 on the Soul Album charts two tracks were pulled from the album “You’ll Never Find Another love Like Mine” and “Groovy People” which reached #9 on the US soul charts. Both these tracks were written by Gamble & Huff, the rest were by in house writer Bunny Siglar and also the standard “Pure Imagination” written by Anthony Newley taken from Charlies Chocolate Factory, which he sings brilliantly. It’s a MOR album with lots of great music from MFSB, but not a soul Album. Yet “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine” is super music.& “This song Is Going to Last Forever“ moves along quite nicely

M.F.S.B. released “Hot Summer Nights” / ”Mellow Summertime” /” I’m Feelin” (3 Track EP) Pz3600 1976 taking advantage of one of the longest hot summers in memory gain #14 in the charts also Billy Paul’s “People Power”/ I Want Cha Baby PIL 3593 hit the charts reaching #14 in the US. Yet it was the Stalwarts The O’Jays who ended the year with two great tracks taken from the forth coming album “Message In our Music” released in 1977“Message In Our Music”/ “She’s Only A Woman” PIL 3601 with the boys on great form with Eddie Lavert and William Powell sharing the vocals and MFSB sounding great as always taking us on a trip. later “Darling Darling Sweet Baby “/ “A Prayer” Pz 3610 a great lovely song praising his Woman with controlled singing from Eddie with bongos light brass, strings, both reached #1 in US soul charts & the latter #24 in uk
