Annual Report of Enterprise Development Institute (EDI) for the year of 2016-17 Enterprise Development Institute (EDI) had maintained its growth momentum for conducting various training, educational and other programs in 2016-17. This year the Institute had given emphasis on skill training programs. It organized 9 (nine) Entrepreneurship & Skill Development Programs (ESDP) for the women SHG members in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas & Hooghly districts. West Bengal Swarojgar Corporation Ltd supported EDI for conducting these training in various trade like, decorative & scented candle making, diversified jute products, silk screen, block printing and batik printing, hand embroidery etc. Like previous years, this year also, EDI successfully started one-year courses jointly with Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) such as Diploma Course in Entrepreneurship Development & Small Business Management & Post- Graduate diploma course in Export- Import Management. Enterprise Development Institute (EDI) had maintained its growth momentum for conducting various training, educational and other programs in 2016-17.

This year the Institute had given emphasis on skill training programs. In 2016-17, EDII -Ahmedabad allotted a number of training and awareness programs under DST -NIMAT Project- sponsored by Deptt of Science & Technology, Govt of India. Considering performance of EDI, additional programs were assigned to our Institute by the EDII- Ahmedabad.

EDI organized 5 nos Entrepreneurship Development Programmes for science & technology persons in Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipore districts with support from respective District Industries Centres. We organized for the first time a 4-week EDP for women with science & technology background at EDI premises.

Under DST-NIMAT project, 10 (ten) Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps were organized at some reputed Science & Engineering colleges in Kolkata, South and North 24 Parganas and Hooghly districts.

3 (three) Faculty Development Programs for entrepreneurship were organized for the faculties nominated by engineering & science colleges, management & technical institutes from different districts of West Bengal.

Under sponsorship of the Deptt of Science & Technology, Govt of West Bengal, EDI organized 10 (ten) Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps for the students of Industrial

Training Institutes and Polytechnics in the districts of South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Nadia, Darjeeling & Malda.

In this financial year, we organized 3 nos computerized accounting and e-filing courses with Webel Informatics Ltd which were sponsored by the Society for Self-Employment of Unemployed Youth. One similar training with Webel Informatics Ltd was conducted at EDI by charging modest fee from the trainees. MOU with Webel Informatics Ltd had been extended for 3 years for conducting computerized accounting and e-filing and some other training programs.

Our export-oriented business training in floriculture and horticulture has become very popular, particularly amongst rural entrepreneurs. In this financial year, EDI successfully organized two such training with support from concerned promotional and government agencies like DGFT, IIFT, DGCIS, APEDA, NHB, West Bengal Food Processing and Horticulture Development Corporation, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Dept. of Food Processing and Horticulture, Govt of West Bengal, Indian Institute of Packaging, ECGC, Commercial Banks and some experts.

EDI has been conducting skill training programs with NTPC Ltd under their CSR Project. This year we conducted an Entrepreneurship & Skill Development Program in Diversified Jute Products for 24 local women at Farakka.

Shri Sadhan Pande, Hon’ble Minister for Self-Help Group and Self Employment and Consumers Affairs, Govt of West Bengal graced the 17th

AGM of EDI as the Chief Guest and delivered a valuable speech. Dr Sunil Shukla, Director, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, Ahmedabad addressed as the Guest of Honour.

A number of workshops were successfully organized with some reputed organizations. EDI jointly with The Boston Pledge-USA organized a workshop at EDI premises. Prof Partha Ghosh, Chairperson, The Boston Pledge-USA delivered a motivating speech on ` Uncovering the Enterprising Sprit in You’.

IIFT -Kolkata jointly with EDI-Kolkata organized Policy Form on `Trade and Manufacturing Employment in India’ at IIFT premises.

Mr. Amit Chattoraj, Lead Partner at Straightforward Consultants Inc., Toronto, Canada delivered a lecture on `Harness the Digital Potential of your Business’ at EDI.

Our Institute extended support to Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) to organize a workshop on "Technopreneurship -An Emerging Career Option’. Prof Partha Ghosh, Chairperson, The Boston Pledge-USA addressed the students of IIEST in this workshop.

Prof. Parimal Merchant, Advisor, Asian Institute of Family Managed Business –Mumbai and Director of SP Jain School of Global Management spoke on `Challenges

& Opportunities in Family Business’ for the members of BNCCI, EDI and trained entrepreneurs of EDI.

EDII- Ahmedabad in association with EDI-Kolkata organized one-day Facilitation workshop on DST -NIMAT Project at EDI premises. 34 participants from science, engineering colleges and universities from different states in eastern India joined in this workshop. 

In this financial year, EDI has engaged itself in some Government projects. It was selected as one of the empaneled Institutes by Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Govt of India under Pradhan Mantri Yuva Yojana for conducting training programs. EDI was also selected as a service provider to the Women, SC and ST entrepreneurs under `Stand-up India’ project of the Central Government.

In 2016-17, EDI had taken initiative to develop its existing infrastructure. Two new classrooms and one meeting room were constructed at the 2nd floor of the building. Exterior painting & repairing work also started.

EAC at ITI KalyaniThe Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp was held at Industrial Training Institute, Kalyani from 28th to 30th June, 2016. Shri Goutam Bhowmik, Principal, ITI, Shri Madan Singh, Managing Director of Bengal Surgical Ltd, & Shri Niranjan Biswas, General Manager, District Industries Centre, Nadia addressed at the inaugural session.

Shri Niranjan Biswas, General Manager, District Industries Centre, Nadia inaugurated the programme. Shri B. Banerjee, Coordinator, EDI, Prof Shubha Bhaduri, Shri Suprakash Dhara, Guest Faculties of EDI, Shri S. Chakraborty, Manager, Canara Bank, Kalyani, Shri Keshab Lal Kar, trained entrepreneur of BNCCI took sessions. 50 trainees participated in this programme. They visited the factory of Bengal Surgical Ltd at Kalyani.

EAC at Baruipur Government Polytechnic This programme was organized from 27th to 29th July, 2016. Shri Debasish Roy Choudhury, Officer in Charge of the Polytechnic, Shri Soumen Kumar Neogi, Advisor, Cottage & Small-Scale Industries Association - South 24 Parganas, Shri Tapas Biswas, Manager, Sub-DIC, Baruipur addressed at the inaugural function.

About 80 students joined in the 3-day Camp. Shri Suprakash Dhara, soft-skill trainer and Guest Faculty of EDI, Shri Salil Kumar Mitra, Consultant, Shri Avik Ranjan Das, Former Manager of DIC and Shri Debanshu Chatterjee, MBA, Shri Kamakkheya Dey, Former Manager, UBI, Shri S. K. Bhaduri, Guest Faculty, EDI delivered lecture in this EAC. Factory visit was arranged at Moonlight Engineering at Sonarpur.

EAC at North Calcutta PolytechnicThe 3-Day Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp (EAC) was held at North Calcutta Polytechnic from 12th to 14th July, 2017. Shri Arvind Kumar Mina, IAS, Jt. Secretary of DST, Govt of West Bengal inaugurated the programme. Dr. Gautam Bandyopadhydy, Principal of the Polytechnic delivered welcome address. Shri Sandip Sen, Vice Chairman, EDI discussed on the opportunities and prospects of techno- entrepreneurs in the present-day scenario. Shri Debjoti Das, TPO of the Polytechnic offered vote of thanks.

Majumder, Guest Faculty, EDI, Shri Avik Ranjan Das, Guest Faculty, EDI, Shri Rabin Mallick, Former Banker, Shri S. K. Bhaduri, Guest Faculty, EDI took sessions in this programme. Plant visit was organized at MSME Toolroom at Bonhooghly.

EAC at Provash Roy Industrial Training Institute, BishnupurShri M. K. Chattopadhyay, Principal of the ITI inaugurated the programme on 29th

June, 2016. 55 Students of the IIT participated. In the inaugural session, Shri Soumen Kumar Neogi, Founder President and Advisor of Cottage and Small-Scale Industries Association of South 24 Parganas and Shri B. Banerjee, Coordinator, EDI-Kolkata addressed. During class sessions, Shri Avik Ranjan Das, Former Manager of DIC, Shri Suprakash Dhara, Faculty of EDI, Sri S. K. Bhaduri, Guest Faculty, EDI addressed. Industry visit was arranged at a Cylinder Manufacturing unit.

EAC at ITI-Fulia Shri Niranjan Biswas, General Manager, DIC, Nadia inaugurated the camp on 17 th

August, 2016. Shri Amiya Kr. Kalidaha, Sr. Scientific Officer, DST, Govt. of West Bengal, Md. Shaiful Hassan, Principal of the ITI addressed the students. 55 students participated. Shri Ganesh Bhawal, former Lead District Manager of UBI, Shri B. Banerjee, Coordinator, EDI-Kolkata, Shri S. Gayen, Instructor of the ITI, Shri Keshablal Kar, Director of Neo Equipment, Shri Avik Ranjan Das, former Manager of DIC took sessions.

Shri Madan Sing, Director of Bengal Surgical Limited and Public Relation Officer of Kalyani Chamber of Commerce presented certificates to the students. Factory visit was arranged at Bengal Surgical Limited at Kalyani Industrial Estate.

EAC at St. Xavier’s’ College, Rajgram, Siliguri EDI organized the EAC at the College from 29th to 31st August, 2016. Fr. Dr. Joseph Victor, SJ, Principal of the college and Shri Amiya Kr. Kalidaha, Sr. Scientific Officer, DST, Govt. of West Bengal addressed the students at the inauguration.

Dr. Suprakash Roy, Asstt. Professor, Department of Technical Education & Training, Govt. of West Bengal, Shri B. Banerjee, Coordinator, EDI-Kolkata, Shri Sumit Sinhal - Chairman, Entrepreneurship & Innovation YI (CII), Siliguri had taken sessions on different topics. Some students presented their business plans at the EAC. Shri Raj Basu, Secretary General, Indo Myanmar Fraternal Alliance shared his experiences.

In the valedictory session, Dr. Joseph Victor S.J., Principal of the College handed over the completion certificate to the participants. Dr. Hadida Yasmin, Vice Principal, NBXC proposed vote of thanks. About 80 candidates successfully completed this 3-Day Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp.

EAC at Umeshchandra CollegeThis EAC was held at the Conference Hall of Indian Medical Council, Salt Lake from 16th to 18th November, 2016. In the Inaugural session, Dr. Md. Tofazzal Haque, Principal of the College, Sri M. N. Maity, Director of EDI and Shri Amiya Kumar Kalidaha, Sr. Scientific Officer, DST, Govt. of West Bengal delivered speech. About 60 students participated. Ms. Samanwita Ghosh, Faculty in Commerce of the College proposed vote of thanks.

In 3-day programme, a number of faculties took sessions such as Shri Amiya Kumar Kalidaha, Shri S. K. Bhaduri, Guest Faculty of EDI, Shri D. Bandyopadhyay, Guest faculty of EDI, Shri. B. Banerjee of EDI and Ms. Samanwita Ghosh, faculty of the College. The students visited M/s. PAR Enterprises (P) Ltd. and M/s System Control Automation at Udayan Industrial Estate, Pagladanga. At the closing day, Shri Anirban Debnath a successful entrepreneur of EDI interacted with the participants. Shri S. K. Das, Asstt. Director, IMT, MSMEDI – Kolkata, Shri S. K. Mitra, and Shri Santanu Banerjee, Guest Faculties of EDI delivered lectures.

EAC at Industrial Training Institute – Habibpur, in MaldaThis 3-day EAC was Inaugurated by Dr. S. K. Panda, General Manager, DIC, Malda on 21st September, 2016. Shri T. K. Modak, Principal of the ITI, Shri Uttam Kr.

Saha, Hony Joint Secretary of Malda Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce and Shri B. Banerjee, Coordinator, EDI addressed at the inaugural session. After the Inauguration, Dr. Panda, GM, DIC-Malda, Shri Sabyasachi Mazumder, Regional Manager of Bangiyo Gramin Vikash Bank, Malda, Mr Asif Equebal, Management Consultant and Shri Balaram Patra, Foreman of the ITI addressed the students.

EAC at Women Industrial Training Institute -BanipurShri Dipankar Chakraborty, General Manager of DIC, North 24 Parganas inaugurated the EAC on 9th January, 2017. It was addressed by Smt Nazreen Akhtar, Principal of the WITI, Shri S. K. Das, Assistant Director, IMT of MSMEDI – Kolkata. Shri A. K. Kundu, Instructor of the WITI proposed vote of thanks.

Shri Dipankar Chakraborty, GM, DIC, (N) 24 Parganas and Shri A. K. Kalidaha, Sr. Scientific Officer, DST, Govt of West Bengal had taken some important sessions. Shri S. K. Das of MSMEDI, Shri R. Mallick, Former Manager of UBI, Shri B. Banerjee of EDI, Shri S. K. Bhaduri, Guest Faculty of EDI, Shri Mithun Das, a successful entrepreneur took sessions and interacted with the trainees.

EAC at Birla Institute of Technology The 3-Day Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp of Birla Institute of Technology was held from 6th to 8th March, 2017. EAC at Charuchandra CollegeDr Naba Kanta Jana, Teacher-In-Charge of Charuchandra College inaugured the programme on 16th November, 2016. Two young Entrepreneurs of EDI, Ms Banhi Dasgupta of M/s M/s Swayam and Shri Gaurav Nahata, Partner of M/s Funscholar motivated the students by sharing their experience. Industry exposure visit was arranged at M/s Allen Laboratories Ltd. Dr G.P. Sarkar Founder Chairman, M/s Allen Group shared his experience with the participants. . EAC at Techno India College of TechnologyIt was held at Techno India College of Technology from 7th September to 9th September, 2016. In the inaugural session, Prof (Dr.) Radha Tamal Goswami, Director, Techno India College of Technology welcomed the guests and students. Shri Sandip Sen, Vice-Chairman, EDI delivered keynote address. It was also addressed by Mr Arunava Banerjee, Director, Alliance Broadband Services Ltd and Mr Rohit Sarkar, Co-Founder, Distronix. Dr. Sarup Prasad Ghosh, Registrar, Techno India College of Technology proposed vote of thanks. 77 students participated in this EAC. Mr Nilanjan Mitra, CA, Faculty EDI, Mr Tarun Mallick, MD of M/s Clubb International took sessions. As a part of the programme, participants visited M/s G.P. Tronics Limited (Solar Products).

EAC at Jogomaya Devi CollegeThis EAC was held between 8th to 10th March 2017 at the College premises.81 women students participated in the programme. Dr Sarbani Sarkar, Principal of the college inaugurated the Camp on 8th March 2017. Shri Santanu Banerjee, Guest Faculty, EDI and Shri Rahul Sarkar, Assistant Director, EDI addressed at the inaugural session. Shri Bhaskar Mondal, Manager of DIC, EDI-trained entrepreneurs- Ms Mahua Saha of M/s TAARMAA’s Collection and Ms Sikha Das of M/s Continental Travels shared their business experience. The students visited Allen Laboratories Limited, Keshtopur and Dr G.P. Sarkar, Founder Chairman of M/s Allen Group interacted with students.

EAC at Vidyasagar Evening CollegeThe EAC was held between 23rd to 25th March 2017 at College premises in which 83 students participated. Shri R S Gangopadhyay, Principal of Vidyasagar Evening College inaugurated the EAC on 23rd March, 2017. Shri Rahul Sarkar, Asstt. Director, EDI and Shri Santanu Banerjee, Guest Faculty, EDI spoke at the inaugural session.

Mr Salil Kumar Mitra, guest faculty of EDI, Dr Mukul Mitra (Ex AGM, SBI), Mr Avik Ranjan Das (Guest faculty, EDI), Mr Anirban Debnath, Director of Ms Proinnovasys Technologies and a trained entrepreneur of EDI delivered lecture. Plant visit was arranged at M/s Khadims India Limited and M/s Bharat Plastics Limited at Kasba Industrial Estate.

EAC at Brahmananda Keshab Chandra College The EAC was held between 16th to 18th February 2017 at the College premises. 76 students participated in this EAC. Prof (Dr) Dwijesh Dutta Majumder, President, Governing Body, B.K.C. College inaugurated the program on 16th February, 2017. It was addressed by Papia Chakraborty, Principal, BKC College, Shri S. K. Das, Asstt, Director (IMT), MSME-DI, Shri B.K Halder, Manager, DIC-, 24 Paraganas (North). Shri Samir Pal of M/s Mascot Integrated Industries, Mr Salil Mitra, an expert, also addressed. The students visited 4 nos small scale units at Bonhooghly Industrial Estate.

EAC at Narula Institute of TechnologyThe EAC was held between 8th to 10th November 2016. 79 students participated. Prof(Dr) B.C. Mal, Vice-Chancellor, JIS University inaugurated the EAC on 8th

November, 2017. Prof Maitrayee Kanjilal, Principal of the Narula Institute of Technology, Mr S. K. Das, Asst Director, MSME-EDI -Kolkata addressed. Mr Debashis Bandopadhyay, Guest Faculty EDI, Mr Samir Pal M/s Mascot Integrated Industries, Mr Amiya Kumar Kalidaha, Senior Scientific Officer, Dept of HESTB, Govt of West Bengal also addressed at the camp. The participants were taken to MSME Toll Room -Kolkata for industry exposure visit.

EAC at South Calcutta Girls’ College It was held from 26th to 29th September, 2016 at the college. In inaugural session, Smt. Madhumita Chakrabarti, Teacher in Charge, South Calcutta Girls’ College delivered welcome speech. Prof. Ashok Kr Banerjee, Chairman, IIM Calcutta Alumni Association, Prof. Shikha Mukherjee, Associate Professor of the College addressed the students. 76 students of the college participated. Mr. Bhaskar Mondal, Manager, DIC, Kolkata, Mr. Avik Das, Mr. Anup Chowdhury and Ms. Tinku Guha Thakurta discussed on various topics related entrepreneurship. The students visited M/s

Technocon Services and M/s MASCOT Integrated Industries at Kasba Industrial Estate.EAC at Vivekananda CollegeThis EAC was held from 26th to 29th September, 2016. At the inaugural function held on 26th September 2016, Dr. Tapan Kumar Poddar, Principal of the college welcomed the guests and students. Prof Askhok Kr. Banerjee, Chairman, IIM Calcutta Alumni Association delivered keynote address. 75 students participated. Guest faculties of EDI such as Shri Ganesh Bhowal, Shri Shilajit Saha, Shri Suprakash Dhara took sessions. Shri Sandip Sarkar and Shri Avijit Majumder two trained entrepreneurs of EDI shared their experience. Industry visit was arranged at the 4 industrial units at Behala Industrial Estate.

EAC at Hooghly Engineering & Technology College, Pipulpati, HooghlyIt was organized from 1st to 3rd March, 2017 at the college premises. Prof. (Dr.) S. Mukherjee, Secretary, Governing Body of the college and Dr. Sumanta Bhattacharyya, Principal of the College addressed at the inaugural function. 76 students participated in this 3-day programme. Shri Goutam Duari, Manager, DIC, Shri Manabendra Saha, LDM, Mr. D. Bandopadhyay, Mr. S.K. Das Asstt Director-IMT, MSMEDI, Kolkata, Mr. Gokul Das discussed on several topics. Industry visit was organized at Jaya Food Products.

EAC at Ramsaday CollegeIt was organized at the college premises from 21st to 23rd February 2017. Dr Debakumar Mukherjee, Principal, Ramsaday College and Shri Ashok Sinha Roy, GM, DIC -Howrah addressed at the inauguration held on 21st February, 2017. 97 students participated. Mr. Amiya Kumar Kalidaha, Senior Scientific Officer, Dept of HESTB, Govt of West Bengal, Prof. Subha Kumar Bhaduri, Shri Arghya Chatterjee (EDI-trained S T entrepreneur) addressed. EDP for S & T Persons at Kolkata (from 22/09/16 to 09/11/16)Shri Abhijit Banerjee, General Manager of DIC – Kolkata Inaugurated the programme on 22nd September, 2016 at EDI premises. 65 applications were received and 25

candidates and 5 wait-listed candidates were selected by the interview board. 24 candidates successfully completed the training.

Besides in-house faculties, a number of experts and guest faculties of EDI took sessions. Factory visit was organized at Kasba Industrial Estate with EDP trainees of Sonarpur EDP.

The trainees selected different products such as packaged drinking water, digital marketing, cyber café, food processing, decorative & scented candle making, installation of solar devices, education institute, CCTV installation & servicing, chemical products, online grocery, textile designing, mustered oil production etc.

EDI organized 4-week Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Programme (ESDP) on Jute products for women at NTPC Farraka from 19th January, 2017. This programme was sponsored by NTPC Ltd, Farakka. Shri A K Bandyopadhyay, Manager (HR), CSR, NTPC inaugurated the programme. 24 women trainees successfully completed the training.

Entrepreneurship & Skill Development Programme (ESDP) with West Bengal Swarojgar Corporation Ltd.

In 2016-17, EDI conducted 9 (nine) Entrepreneurship & Skill Development Programmes for selected women SHG members in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Paragans, Hooghly districts. These programmes were sponsored by West Bengal Swarojgar Corporation Ltd. 225 women SHG members had undergone these training.

Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) in association of EDI-Kolkata organized a workshop on "Technopreneurship -An Emerging Career Option’ on 7the March, 2017 at the Alumni Seminar Hall of IIEST. Prof Partha Ghosh, Chairman, Boston Pledge-USA delivered a motivating speech. Shri Sandip Sen, Chairman, EDI introduced Prof Ghosh in his introductory speech. Facilitation Workshop on DST-NIMAT Project

EDII- Ahmedabad in association with EDI-Kolkata organized one-day Facilitation Workshop on DST -NIMAT Project on 20th December, 2016 at EDI premises. Shri Sandip Sen, Chairman, EDI delivered keynote address and Shri M N Maity, Director, EDI welcomed the participants. 34 participants from science, engineering colleges and universities from different states in eastern India joined in this workshop. In technical session, Shri S B Sareen, Programme Director and Shri P S Solanki, National Coordinator, EDII discussed with the participants.
