Science Fiction Project by Anisia Talianu The Ark This ark is moving, not on a waste of waters, But through the bombarding dust of outer space, Carrying the sole survivors of earth On a star trek to a safer place. Like an echo at an immense distance From an Earth polluted and scared by men Somewhere the twin of Earth orbits a sun And there perhaps we may begin again. MY COMMENTS This poem entitled “The Ark” written by Stanley Cook deals with the idea of survival of humanity. The main characters are the people who live on the Ark. The main themes are survival, space traveling, generations. The plot starts when the people embarked on the Ark and left Earth because it was polluted and scarred by them. They made a mistake and it’s too late to fix it. They are now traveling in space for generations looking for a safer place or “the twin of Earth” like the poet says in the second stanza. They are now united: “prey and predator alike”, “hunted or hunters”, hoping they would find that “replica planet” where they can begin their life again. They have been traveling for a long time, and

they will probably still be for even more, but their memories from Earth come back like an echo. I liked this poem because I think the poet had a very interesting idea of a “generation ship”. I think people should think about it and learn from it because it might happen one day.GALLERY

RELATED MOVIE: 2012MY COMMENTSThis movie entitled ’’2012’’ is a science fiction disaster movie that deals with the question of survival of humanity at the end of the world. The people plan to build 7 arks on which they would embark and hope to survive the tidal wave that was going to hit the continents. But they don’t have enough time to finish all the arks so they can only use three of them. Many people were hurt and many people died, but they couldn’t save everyone. The arks were placed somewhere in the Mount Everest, the highest pick of the world, so that the impact with the tidal wave wouldn’t be that strong. They survive the tsunami and then they sail on the new ocean to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, where the African continent has risen in elevation. There, they will begin their life again. The main themes are survival of humanity, end of the world and the price of surviving. I liked this movie because it shows that even in a possible “end of the world” the humanity can find a way of survival. \

THE MARTIAN CHRONICLESThis book , entitled “The Martian Chronicles”, written by Ray Bradbury, published in 1950, deals with the idea of human beings arriving on Mars and meeting Martians. The astronauts are excited about their expedition on Mars but the Martians are skeptical. They think the men are actually crazy Martians that imagined their ship and their looks, so they kill them. They discover then that the space ship is real and so are the astronauts who are now dead.

The main themes are the meeting between the human beings and the Martians, space traveling and Martian civilization. The main characters are the captain and his crew and the Martians they meet: Ylla and Mr. Xxx.To comment on the main points I can say that there was a big misunderstanding that caused the death of four astronauts.I didn’t really like the story because I found it a little bit sad… But it was interesting.

SPACE POEMWe stopped at a large asteroidduring our transgalactic run.

The crew, all bored and bloody-minded,got off determined for some fun,

Some F-type alienoids were hangingfrom rocks by their pink sucker-pads.The soon let go. Those who resisted

took a fair beating from my lads.

Then from the cliff above a shower of pebbles struck the ground like hailan M-type on a ledge stood swinging

a great stone in his functional tail.

He killed a man before I got himin the disintegrator ray.

The crew retreated to the airlock. The F-types screamed and climbed away.

I've called the medic- bank in Thetaon my molecular stenophone.

We must have got a bug, or virus. The crew are sickening one by one.

The specimen we caged is thriving, watching me as I close this file.

My god, I'd swear the thing was smiling if I thought things like that could smile,

T.F. KLINE MY COMMENTS This poem entiled “Space Poem”, written by T.F.Kline, deals with the idea of human beings in space, and also about the inhuman way they react to the aliens they find there. The main themes are aliens and space traveling. The main characters are the astronauts that traveled in space. The plot starts when the protagonists meet the aliens.I didn’t really like this poem because it shows how narrow-minded humans can be when they see something different, something new.

The sentinel by Arthur C. Clarke

MY COMMENTSThis short story entitled “The sentinel”, written by Arthur C. Clarke, first published in 1951, deals with the discovery of an old artifact on Earth’s moon left behind by ancient aliens as a warning for possible intelligent species that might live on Earth. The main themes are discovery, space and alien object. The plot starts when Wilson, the protagonist, a geologist, sees a shinny object on the hills, on the moon. He decides to make an expedition and see what the metallic glitter was. He found a bizarre object, probably coming from a lunar ancient civilization, made out of a strange material. It was a machine protecting itself with forces that had challenged Eternity. It was nothing that could be matched in the antiquity of our own race,To comment on the main points I can say that the protagonist found the idea that the Moon had possessed intelligence at all too tremendous to grasp, and his pride would not let him take the final, humiliating plunge.I liked this short. It was interesting to discover a possible alien object, the reaction of the protagonist and his thoughts regarding the artifact.

The Imperial WalkerMY COMMENTSThis is an extract of the book entitled “The Empire Strikes Back” written by Dolnald F. Glut. It describes a dramatic encounter between Luke Skywalker, forced tocrash-land his “speeder”, and one of the Imperial assault machines.I like dthis extract because it was really dynamic and full ofaction.
