Message from Mr. Jones

Every year is important. Every term, month, week and second is another life experience that we must grab with both hands.

Broadmeadows Valley Primary School, now in its fourth year, has grown from a sparkling new school with plenty of promise, to a learning community that is widely known for consistently delivering high quality education and student support.

This fine publication For Us, By Us clearly depicts the relationship that students now have with their learning. A key indicator to the success of a child is their level of pride in themselves, their family and their community.

At BVPS, teachers, students and their families share a strong commitment to improving the opportunities for all. I invite you to experience this as you pour through the pages and see for yourself the incredible impact that this school has had in the lives of these very special chil-dren.

Thank you,

10 Things That Happened in 2012

LN3 Year in Review by LN3

2012! The year began with all students returning in anticipation of a great year ahead. We were excited about finding new friends, welcoming new students and teachers and becoming the leaders of the whole school. In February Leadership Roles were a big deal in the 5/6 team. We were excited at the thought of becoming a leader at such a great school, BVPS! We elected our school captains Hassan and Tayyibah. Our House Captains were selected by the teaching team in LN3. The successful candidates were Jaylan for Lichfield, Jahn for Lilliput, Hanan for Johnstone and Marko for Erinbank. All school leaders, including the class representatives from the various grades, participated in an eventful Young Leaders Conference held in the city. The day began early because we had to meet at the Broadmeadows train station at 7.45am. Ms Rosie and Mr Montalto accompanied us and we had a fantastic day. We met inspirational people who spoke about their journey towards building their careers. Inspiring stuff! In our neighbourhoods we discussed our school values – respect, empathy, cooperation and honesty and what it looked like in our team. Cross Country was held earlier in the year. Of the many students who participated, Hassan, Albert, Jaylan and Chedelle were able to advance to the next round which was the Zones. Jaylan and Chedelle were successful and represented our school at the Regions with great determination but unfortunately, they did not get a place at States. As always the Multicultural Day held in term 2 was a highlight. We enjoyed the cultural dances performed by students at our school but unfortunately there was no food this year. Violetti proved to be a magnificent dancer and Juanessa and Sharon put on a great performance with many of the younger students. Gala Days – LN3 were fortunate enough to participate in special Gala Days throughout the year thanks to our new sports teacher, Mr Youlden. Rugby, hockey and girls soccer days were on offer and proved to be a lot of fun . We competed against many schools in the region in knock out rounds. The Inaugral Hume Cup Netball / Football Day was hosted at our school with 4 schools competing for the honour of being the first champions! Our Netball team looked to be down and out at lunch time but managed to bounce back and blitz the competition to take out the first ever Hume Cup! We were very proud of ourselves! Unfortunately our valiant footballers lost in the semi final to Broadmeadows who eventually went on to win the Cup. Athletics were held in September and many of our students went along to participate in the track and field events. We had a great day and had some fun. Nikita went on to represent our school in shotput at Regionals. Interschool sport was a big feature on the school calendar throughout the year in LN3. Many of the teams made it to the finals including the basketball open team, open volleyball and girls volleyball team, the open netball team and the cricket. All students represented our school with pride and good sportsmanship! Garden Gurus continued their gardening program with the assistance of Ray Drew, a volunteer at our school. Some of the vegetables we planted included broccoli, silverbeet, tomatoes and beans. Many of the younger children in our school liked to pick our butter beans straight off the plant and eat them. Yum! In term 3 we celebrated Children’s Week with a large community event on the oval called ‘Learning Through Fun’. The LN3 students were the FUN ambassadors of the event and we had to organise and lead the program of activities for the morning. We even got a chance to meet the kinder and playgroup children from the Early Learning Centre. We all finished off the morning with a whole school dance off to Gangnam Style! Fantastic! Near the end of the year Camp was on many people’s minds. We ventured off to Camp Coonawarra with Mr Montalto, Mr Youlden, Ms Simpson and Mrs Cecchini. Some of the highlights were the scary story told by Mr Jones around the campfire, the movie night (in which many children fell asleep) and no one will ever forget the grand finale, which was the talent show on the last night. Cabin groups prepared and performed their acts in front of the campers, with the teachers judging their act. Ms Simpson was the nasty judge but Mr Youlden wasn’t much better! Mrs Cecchini and Jo Dillon were delightful in their comments! Activities during the day included the flying fox, the giant swing, canoeing, the high ropes course, archery and horse riding. Horse riding proved to be the favourite because many of us hadn’t experi-enced this before! It was a great feeling knowing that you were riding an actual horse! We would definitely recommend this camp to everyone! Mr Youlden is back on the protein shakes... thank goodness!

Now we are looking to farewell our Grade 6 students who are preparing for their Graduation shortly. We wish them all the best in their future learning at their new secondary schools!

2012 has been a crazy, exciting year in Learning Neighbourhood 2. Here are some of our stories!

In literacy we have been learning lots of things about reading, writing and speaking, but one in particular was poetry. We did bio poems and cinquain poems. We also wrote persuasive texts. In these, we had to persuade the reader to be on our side on an issue like ‘kids should be able to listen to music in class’. We even learnt how to listen. Whole body listening is when we do a lot of different things to show we’re listening like listening with our eyes, hands, brain, heart, feet and ears. In maths this year we have been learning about a lot of topics but the one we liked the most was the Mini Metric Olympics. We had teams and we were a country, we battled against other teams to win the maths Olympics, it was all about measurement. We had paper plate discus, straw javelin, Tour de Broady, left hand sponge squeeze, cotton ball shot put, golf ball rally, the water race and last but not least, the rubber chicken throw. In Enrichment this year we did a lot of fun experiments. The topics were called ‘Plants in Action’, ‘Back To The Future’ and ‘Light Fantastic’. In Light Fantastic, we made a toy whose main feature must be about light. In ‘Back To The Future’ we got to choose which topic we wanted to do out of the Gold Rush, the First Fleet and the Victorian Gold Rush. Excursions: We have had a lot of fun at the Royal Botanic Gardens, but we had the best time at the Museum. We were doing it for our enrichment topic on ‘Back to the Future’. We got to learn all about the story of Melbourne and its history. We also learnt about the history of toys, the history of the Earth and we even got to meet Phar Lap. This has been the best year ever!

2012 has been a great year in LN1!

This year the grade 2’s went to the grade 2 camp which was a sleepover at the school. They had so much fun making pizza, watching movies and staying up till 10PM.

We liked the Scienceworks excursion the most because we went to Nitty Gritty Super City, sport centre, house secrets, pumping station, the playground and we had a race against Cathy Freeman.

We went on an excursion to the LaTrobe Wildlife Sanctuary where we learnt about mini beasts. Some people found spiders under logs and rocks. We all hugged the tree and some people saw a kangaroo.

We had lots fun on Children’s Day. The kids from the Dimboola Early Learning Centre came to the oval with us to celebrate. There was lots of fun activites like Hi 5, making gyrocopters, bean bag toss, fitness and making spaghetti necklaces.

We were glad to see our classmates Baris, Sorena and Noah come back from Turkey, Canada and New Zealand.

One night in 2012 Batman was fighting Joker at World of Chaos. Batman had jumped from Eureka Skydeck and landed in the Jokers secret lair. Then Joker locked up Batman in the jail. Then the Incredible Hulk broke the lock and took Batman to his lair. Batman found the co-ordinates to where Joker was hiding and flew from a building and killed Joker.

The B.V.P.S 2012 Multicultural Day was a very fun and success-ful day. Parents were invited to all the Learning Neighbour-hoods to talk about their culture and about where they come from. Some families performed traditional dances in costumes from their country. In some neighbourhoods parents bought in food from their country and

everyone got to taste some. The canteen also provided multicultural food as lunch orders. Students could order Mexican nachos, Middle Eastern sausages, Aussie meat pies, Italian pizza and Chinese fried rice. Yummy! When it was time to come in from recess and lunch the music was differ-ent. It was traditional music

from different countries over the PA. After lunch everyone went out to the oval to play some sporting games in house teams. Lots of parents came to watch. It was a wonderful day!

If I went to Shetland I would see the parade all day long. I would see the Vikings burn down their ship. And I would see the animals and I would go on Oscar Charlie the helicopter and on the boats. I would see the salmon in the cages. On the cliffs I would eat my lunch and I would feed the puf-fins.

Cross Country Wrap Up Official Hume Cup Day A lot of people went to cross country from Broadmeadows Valley Primary school for District. Only 4 people got in to Zones but everyone ran very well. Chedelle came 9th, Jaylan came 6th, Albert came 3rd and Hassan came 2nd. Albert and Hassan got medals. About 2 weeks later Jaylan, Chedelle, Albert and Hassan went to Cross Country Zones. Jaylan and Chedelle made it into regionals. Unfortunately Hassan and Albert didn’t. Hassan came 16th and Albert came 17th. Jaylan and Chedelle went to regionals where Jaylan came 51st and Chedelle came 58th. What a great effort by BVPS! By Jaylan Bricknall and Juanessa Leuluai

Should judges judge singers on their looks? by Angelina Aiolupotea

I STRONGLY believe that judges shouldn’t judge on just a singer’s looks. Why? Firstly, if you’re going to visit a hotel to listen to singers their look doesn’t show their beautiful voice. I say this bravely because what is the point of going to a TALENT show just because you look good. It doesn’t mean you will be good at singing. Don’t be a silly duffer. My second powerful reason is that if you put too much make up on and don’t practise the judges would definitely say your voice is awful. It’s really shocking if the judges say your voice is terrible. It is sad.

FINALLY, if you judge on peoples looks and say bad stuff it’s mean and really rude. I strongly believe judges shouldn’t judge on peoples looks because it’s rude and shocking and what’s the point of coming to a show if you’re not there to listen to the singing?

Being a young leader is a huge responsibility and we are trusted by teachers, students and others to do the right thing. You need to attend the young leader meetings to discuss things about the school and what will make the school a better place. I am thrilled to be a young leader at such a great school. It is a great opportunity for students to improve their citizenship skills. You need to organize who is doing the assembly and doing the chairing. I love being a young leader.

By Brianna Stanley

Being a young leader is an absolute privilege because out of over 250 kids in the school, I am one of the young leaders. I get to represent this wonderful school, I get the chance to express myself at a meeting every Friday and most im-portantly, I get to be a vice captain of Broad-meadows Valley Primary School. Don’t get me wrong, being a young leader isn’t all fun and games, it’s a huge responsibility. Before I knew I wanted to be a young leader, I asked myself, what am I going to do to contribute, what am I going to do to make this school a better place and I answered, express every idea I have with this school and try to make it safer and better, and I believe that I have.

What it means to be a School Captain

What it means to be a School Vice Captain

FOR US BY US

Being a School Captain means so many things to me! One thing is that I get an opportunity to experience being a leader, and being an excel-lent role model to others. Another thing is that you get the advice from many more leaders from the past. E.g. going to the National Young Leaders Day in the city where we got to listen to the people who are known for their great leader-ship! Listening to advice from others lets us become more from what we are now. Another is that we get the opportunity to represent our school anywhere and everywhere. I love to lis-ten to smaller kids and what they have to say. Also you are known by everyone in the school. Your parents congratulate you for all the hard effort to become a leader. You know that others trust you, because they have voted you in to be a Young Leader. We all have organised the daf-fodil day event, the multicultural day, super hero day and many, many more. It’s an absolute honour to represent the school and be a School Captain! By Tayyibah Shaheen

Being a school captain means a lot to me. I expe-rienced the way of being a true leader and a great role model. I’ve shown great leadership towards the teachers and students. I got to meet awesome leaders at the National Young Leaders Day. I also got to meet student leaders from oth-er schools. I represented my school by showing who I was. I showed great leadership at the Dim-boola Early Learning Centre. I helped officially open the centre by presenting the plaque. As part of our role as young leaders we have to run the assembly on Friday afternoons. I like reading who the students of the weeks are. By Hassan Yehia

What it means to be a Young Leader As a house captain I think it is very important to be a young leader because we have to be responsible and respectful and be good role models. It is very important to be confident so students can look up to us. We need to act like a leader so we can be recognised.

By Jaylan Bricknell

When I became a young leader I experienced that it’s all about responsibility and leadership. It’s a privilege to be responsible for my team also the students in the yard. I love to repre-sent Broadmeadows Valley Primary School because I can show my identity. I believe that I have showed lots of respect to teachers and students.

To me, being a young leader means that I have to respect other people, and also respect the school values. I try hard at my work and not get distracted easily. It also means that I have to be responsible about the sug-gestion box and photos. If you want to be a class representative you just have to write a speech that means you and let the other students vote, by the way, I am Kelly Pang from 5/6C. I am also a class representative. If you want to be a Young Leader, you need to be honest and have empathy for other people.

By Kelly Pang

To be young leader you need to be respectful, caring, honest and responsible. You need to care about the safety of others and you need to be able to be a good role model for the younger chil-dren. You need to be confident and trustworthy and also need to be able to speak in front of lots of people. You need to be brave.

By Angelique Hill

To me being a young leader is setting an example to everyone and also respecting everyone that is in the school. In your speech if you say you will change your behaviour you have to mean it and take action, if you don’t you will find yourself not a young leader. Another way to be a young lead-er is if a teacher is out of the class room don’t just stand there and watch people muck around, go and take action by telling people to continue with their work.

By Marko Jibou

Hello my name is Hannah and I am the class representative of 5/6V. When you become a young leader you have the opportunity to prove to others that you are as responsible as you said you were in your speech. Also when you say your speech on Election Day you have to make sure that you would do those things if you are elected as a young leader. Some of the things that people like in a young leader are loyalty, respect, giving people a fair go and being mature (for your age!) You need to come up with sensible ideas and inform others about what it happening. You cannot miss meetings or spe-cial events and you need to be a FANTASTIC role model to others younger and older than you! So know you know what it means to be a young leader and what the qualities are that people want in a responsible young leader!! Hannah Mamo

ISSUE 2

Being a young leader is tough why? Because the first thing you need to do is to attend all Friday meetings at learning neighbourhood three. The next thing you need remember is to be fair, kind and concentrate at all times. You also need to know when it is your turn to take over assembly and to also know when you are doing chair and minutes. You should also remember to bring over the suggestion box in your learning neighbourhood. By Samira Shamouael Being a Young Leader means a lot! You have take on the role of being reliable, trustful and re-spectful leading role model. You have to be as punctual as you ever could because you can’t be late for assembly or the meetings. You have to allow yourself to think of ways to im-prove the school. When on stage you have to not be shy, be courageous, don’t have stage fright. That’s what it means to be a young leader for me. By Tony Lang

Being a young leader means you have to be respectful, responsible and reliable to all of your classmates and teachers. You have to attend all the meet-ings with pride. You need to contribute to the meetings and the young leaders decisions. You need to take suggestions from your classmates and bring them up in the meetings. Being a house captain means to be respectful and feel empathy for others; as a young leader you need to be a role model and set an example for the younger students. As part of the young leaders committee we discuss upcoming events and fundraisers within the school. If you want to become a house captain you need to be able to follow the school values. Being a house captain at BVPS has been such a great experi-ence; being a house captain has given me the opportunity to meet new people and learn more about the school. Through my journey as a house captain I’ve grown and become more mature. I would like to influence everyone out there to become a house captain and feel how this experience will change you. The BVPS rock band and acoustic band got invited to the “School of Rock” for the second year in a row to play some songs we had worked very hard on. It was an amazing event and especially because we were invited two years in a row. We were all a little shy to begin with but we wished our shyness off and got our rock and roll moods on to rock the stage! Everyone performed amazingly and at the end of the performance the crowd roared like crazy. We would like to thank our teachers Mr Tovey, Mr Montalto and Ms Rosie.

when we work. Now that the gold rush is over, Australia’s population has grown drastically and now there are other jobs for us to do. Noooooo! The gold rush has ended! There is no longer a war except we went to court and the judge said that it is not fair that the Queen is making the miners pay a three dollar license to dig a hole. Now gold has changed the future of Australia. You now realize that there are materi-als to make different things and electricity. We have got cars instead of carriages and horses. We love gold now. And now we get more money

Throughout the term we were learning about marvellous microorganisms. We went to Hume Central Secondary College, to learn more about microorganisms. We had to illustrate the objects that we saw through the microscope. My peers and I saw many things. I saw donkey hair, human hair, cotton and many more. We saw flesh and it was not healthy at all. I looked at yeast on the television, which was dyed purple in order for us to see it clearly. In addition we looked at water. My expectation was that there would be minute creatures swimming around in the cloudy water, but in reality it looked normal and I didn’t see any creatures floating around the water. Many of the objects turned out to be different than I had expected. I learned many new things. I enjoyed my time in the science lab, and hopefully I will have another chance to visit again!

They support us in sports and they come up with very smart ideas. They teach us different things that we don’t understand. They make us feel restful and happy, They buy amazing fun toys for me and

read and buy us special and interesting books to read. They make feel like rockstars and they teach us dance moves for some performances we learnt. They take us to amazing places we have been and not been to. They win trophies from sport they play. They tell us how to play sport and because they played sport before like basketball.

This year we have been going to the city with Mr. Tovey for City Beats and we went four times for the year.

We got to play lots of different music in-struments and we learned about water, fog, wind and lucky last, fire. It was an AWESOME time learning all of this stuff with people from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Our delightful city beats teacher Gillian was a fantastic teacher for us. You would love to go there, it was an exciting experience to go to city beats and it was really fun.

We really hoped we could go next year but it is a different school’s turn.

One sunny day a girl had a dog called Jessie. The girl’s name was Bella. She lived at the café. She had a friend called Vera. Her favourite food was coconuts. Vera and Bella went to the island in a big purple and pink boat. They crashed into a rock. Bella and Vera shouted, “HELP!” HELP! A shark is going to eat us!” Bella said, “Maybe we can build a boat.” Vera said, “What a good idea!” So Vera and Bella built a boat and got off the island.

OMG the day had come! B.V.P.S’S 3\4’s went to the MUSEUM!

The totally awesome bit was the 3D room. My favourite bit was when the volcano erupted because it felt like I was burning in the lava. When we went under water, it felt like I was swimming around.

My second favourite bit was the olden day room. It’s my favourite bit because of Phar Lap and the olden day house, INCLUDING THE OUTSIDE TOLIET!

That was the best day ever.

By Ayla Akyaz

THE 3D ROOM WAS THE BEST PART OF THE MUSEUM! I’ll tell you why. OK, it all started with a boring wait because everyone wanted a go in the 3D ROOM but all the glasses were gone. So Ms Coughlan said, “If anyone screams, they will take their glasses off and give them to me. OK.” Everyone said, “Yes Ms Coughlan.” Two people screamed so Ms Coughlan gave them to Jodi and I.

In the 3D ROOM a volcano erupted and lava spurted everywhere. Soon we were in space, a meteor came rushing down at me and I turned around and a volcano erupted with an explosion full of lava and smoke.

Soon the ‘3D ROOM’ was over and I left feeling so excited about the rest of the museum.

On the 16th of November 2012 the Grade 2’s went to the school sleepover. At 6pm we came inside and found a spot to put our stuff. We were so, so, so excited! We went in the staff room and made dough for pizzas and then we went outside to the playground and played together. We came inside and went to the hall to get some mats for our sleeping bags and danced. We came back and put out sleeping bags on the mats.

We went in the staffroom and ate pizza. I had 4 pieces and after we ate we had ice cream with M&M’s and read a book. We went to the playground again and ate watermelon. It was yum. We went inside and brushed our teeth and watched a movie. After the movie we went to bed. I could not sleep. Then I went to sleep. We woke up and watched Peter Pan again. We had breakfast and I had toast with jam. We went to the hall and put the mats back and did some dances. The song was Queen of the Night. We played games. One was musical freeze. After we played every-one went home.

I woke up excited to go on the high ropes course. Group 2 were going first. Group 1 had free time. Mahdey was walking to the high ropes course. He was feeling scared. Mahdey was strapped into a harness. He slowly sauntered on the rope. He thought the first one was easy because it wasn’t that high. Mahdey had Albert spotting him so he would give Mahdey the clips. Mahdey clipped on the second clip. “Pull up check,” screamed Mahdey. “Safe,” replied the supervisor. Mahdey went towards the second one. He was getting scared. Halfway and he was trying to balance. He managed to finish without falling. The next one was pretty much the same but the last one he struggled on but finished. Now it was group 2’s turn to go. Andrew was first. He strapped on a harness. He slowly went on the first one. It was easy. “Pull up check,” he shouted. “Safe,” replied the supervisor. Second one was easy. Andrew sped through that. The third one was straightforward. The last one was hard. He managed but it took about 5 minutes. Fun. Exciting. Awesome experience.

Night two before the sun went down, we got ready for the camp fire. We all sat around the fire talking about our day and what we liked the most. Mr Jones and Mr Montalto were playing songs on the bongos and the guitar. Soon after, we ate our marshmallows. By the end of the night Mr Jones told the campers a scary story. A hand full of boys took their belongings and ran to their cabins in fear. It was a great night. Day three at the Coonawarra Farm Resort. Both activity groups embarked on their horse riding experience. The horses were all different sizes and colours. We went on a long and fun filled horse ride. Some people were scared of the horses because some where big and some were small. After a while we got used to it. We loved it. Camp Coonawarra Farm Resort was amazing it was a great experience for the grade 5/6’s.
