LESSON PLAN

Date: Thursday, October 15, 2009Grade/Class/Subject: 1st Grade Music

Unit/Theme: Form- ABA

Standards:

1c. Students sing from memory a varied repertoire of songs representing genres and styles from diverse cultures.

2a. Students perform in rhythm and maintain a steady tempo.

2b. Students perform easy rhythmic patterns accurately and independently on rhythmic classroom instruments.

6a. Students identify simple music forms when presented aurally.

6e. Respond through purposeful movement to specific music events while listening to music.

Content Objective (s):

The students will:

Identify different sections in songs with ABA form.

Lean songs through echoing.

Sing songs together as a class.

Show the difference between sections in a song with ABA form through movement and playing instruments.

Lesson Sequence:

Introduction:

Review ABA form with the following songs:

Baby Beluga (M&Y p. 264)

Down, Down, Autumn Leaves

Helicopter Pilot (One, Two, Three p. 115)

Main Content:

Read Tingalayo at the reading chair. Discuss Jamaicadifferent language, warm climate, island location.

Teach Tingalayo (Raffi p. 92) by echo singing and then sing together. After teaching the refrain and first verse, point out the ABA form of the song.

Add rhythm sticks to refrain of Tingalayo. Wave the rhythm sticks in the air on the word, Tingalayo and play the melodic rhythm on Come little donkey, come.

Closure:

Quickly discuss Hawaiiwarm climate, island location, culture, languageand show a picture.

Echo sing Aloha (My Toes p. 184) . Point out the ABA form of the song.

All students sing A section of song. Allow volunteers to wear leis in front of the class and hula dance during the B section.
