Grading Policies All of your work will be graded on a point basis in this class. Your job is going to be to earn as many points as possible on each assignment. At the end of the quarter I will simply divide the total amount of points you earned by the total amount of points offered to figure your quarter grade. Here’s how the points are distributed: homework / classwork, labs, assessments and projects will make up the bulk of your grade. The point distributions are listed on the next page. You also will be required to keep a notebook and it will be graded at the end of each quarter. Your notebook should be set up in a particular manner. I keep a hard copy of all of your grades in my gradebook and on the computer. You and your parents will be able to access your grades at home from Power School. If you see a mistake in your grade, simply bring the paper to me and I will correct it in the computer. In addition, I will provide you with a “Term Grade Sheet” sheet ( I call it the “Green Sheet”- because it’s green in color!). I try to pass back all of the papers/assignments you handed in the previous week on the first day we meet each successive week. Please write down your scores on your “Green Sheet” as you receive them.

Remember, this course fulfills part of the requirements for the College and Career Pathway offered through Three Rivers Community College. We will register in class, but if you are absent you will need to make an appointment with Ms. Chen or register yourself. In order to receive college credit, you must register by October 6, 2017.You will be required to maintain a minimum grade in order to receive college credit. Anyone whose yearly average after 3 rd quarter is below 73% will be automatically withdrawn from the Three Rivers Course.

Please try to be diligent in turning in your work this year. This grading system is not heavily dependent on assessments. So, if you don’t do so well on a test or quiz it is not going to ruin your entire quarter grade. However, I have found that nothing can destroy a student’s grade as much as failing to hand in work. You might even do exceptionally well on the assessments, but if you fail to do your homework or your activities/labs you will have great difficulty passing my class. Above all else, please remember- Don’t Accumulate Zeros!!!!

Course Requirements and Grading Procedures

1. Homework/ Classwork- worth between 5-10 points each

Assignments are due at the beginning of the period. No completing work due during class time or while we are going over it! If an assignment is not turned in at the beginning of the class period (or when it’s collected from the rest of the class) it will be considered late!

Late assignments will be penalized by ½ credit for each day they are overdue. No credit will be given for assignments more than 2 days late! Since we meet every

other day, this means that all assignments must be turned in by the next class period or they will not be accepted!!!

Use complete sentences when answering questions! Messy assignments may be penalized- especially if I can’t read the answers!

What you will need for this class:

1. A 3 ring binder (at least 1.5 inches)

2. a pack of dividers (you need 5)

3. a pack of colored pencils

4. a pencil and pen

Students who are absent the day an assignment is given are expected to turn in the homework the next class period after they return to school. You can get missing worksheets from the folders in the back of the room or from the class page. It is your responsibility to actively make up all missed assignments- not only tests, but homework, quizzes and projects too!!

Above all- DO YOUR OWN WORK!!!! - I should not see a great deal of similar or duplicate answers on lab questions or worksheets. Copying someone else’s work is cheating! Assignments that are plagiarized or turned in with answers that are too similar will result in zeroes for all parties involved!!! This means don’t copy answers directly out of the book, magazine article, or online source and don’t copy another classmate’s work- even if you attempt to change only a few words!

2. Tests – worth 50-100 points each

If you are absent on the day of a test, be prepared to take it the day you return to class.

For extended absences, you have 5 days from the last day of your excused absence to make up a test. After 5 days the test will be recorded as a zero.

The Final Exam will be distributed by the Three Rivers professor and will have a minimum grade of 63% required to receive credit.

3. Quizzes- worth between 15 and 20 points each

You will have quizzes that involve both labeling anatomy and describing the functions of the parts in each body system.

Yes, spelling counts!!! Points will be deducted for misspelling assigned anatomy words on quizzes. (Unless you have an I.E.P. that says otherwise)

4. Labs- worth 20 points each

Please be sure labs are turned in neatly done and with no cross-outs! ALL LAB REPORTS MUST BE DONE IN PENCIL! 5 points will be deducted for labs not done in pencil

5. Notebook- worth 50 points

Your grade depends upon how the notebook requirements are met. (See sheet entitled “Notebook Requirements” in the back of this packet)

Notebooks will be graded at the end of each quarter. Keep all materials for semester exams.

Page 4: · Web viewHole’s Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology, 12th Edition (Shier). Mc Graw Hill. Link for student access on website or at:

A cover page for your notebook is available on the class page under “Worksheets and notes”

6. Projects- worth 50 points each

You will have 1 or 2 unit projects per quarter. If you have 2 projects in the same quarter, one project will be done with partners in

class, the other will be completed solely by you and requires work to be done at home or outside of class.

Projects are due on the date assigned. Ten points are deducted for each day they are overdue (even if you are absent on the day it is due).

Extra Credit + + + + +The extra credit system is the following:You can earn 1 pt. each week, and thus have 10 extra points added to your total points at the end of the grading period if you meet all of the following standards (for the entire week):

All assignments are turned in on time each week (no late work)

You arrive to class on time each day (no tardies)

All materials are brought to class

Appropriate language is used each class period (no cuss words)

You are present in class at least 50% of the week

You are allowed to make up 2 missing points in the quarter by doing any one of the following :

1. Answer a challenge question- (1 pt. each)

2. Find an appropriate science article from a legitimate science magazine. Make a copy of the article and

submit it to Mrs. Herr along with a summary of what the article was about. (1 pt. each)

General Classroom Conduct Guidelines

I could make a list of Don’ts for our classroom, but I would rather make a list of what my expectations of you will be for this school year. Here they are:

1. I expect you to respect yourself, your classmates, and myself at all times. This means teasing, abusive

language, put downs, or any other type of disrespect will not be tolerated in our classroom. I will respect

you at all times and I expect the same from each of you.

Page 5: · Web viewHole’s Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology, 12th Edition (Shier). Mc Graw Hill. Link for student access on website or at:

2. I expect you to use appropriate language in the classroom at all times. Swears of any type will not be

allowed in class- including the “little” ones too! Each swear word will actually result in a deduction from

your extra credit points. Habitual cursing will merit a phone call to your parents or detentions or a referral

to the office.

3. I expect you to be able to work collaboratively in groups. The work should be shared and not completed

by just one or two people while others watch. If you are a person who likes to takes charge, be

willing to delegate the work to your cohorts. Share the responsibilities on projects, labs and classwork!

4. I expect you to get to class on time. On time means that when the bell rings you are in your seat or well

on your way to your seat, not hanging around in the hall and coming in the door after the bell rings.

Unexcused tardies will result in a loss of extra credit points.

5. I expect you to come to class prepared. This means you should come to class each day with your book,

your notebook, a pen and pencil, and your homework completed. I expect that your book will always be

covered, as well.

6. I expect you to find the answers to homework or lab assignments yourself. The answers should not be

taken verbatim from online sources or from your classmates or friends. For example: The answers to all the

lab questions are always found in the text of the lab itself. Don’t look for them online. Please note Three

Rivers has a strict code of conduct, as mentioned above; please do your own work. The Three rivers student

handbook can be found with more details on plagiarism and cheating (page 4) here:

http://www.trcc.commnet.edu/Div_academics/CareerPathways/documents/CCP%20Student%20Guide.pdf

7. I expect a safe environment to be maintained at all times. This means that you must follow all laboratory

safety rules- including horseplay, eating and unnecessary movement out of your seats when it is not

appropriate for the activity we are involved in. This is a science classroom and no food is allowed. The

only drink that you can have in the classroom is water.

8. I expect you to use your cell phone only at the appropriate times . There are some activities in which you

will be allowed to use your phone. However, it is unnecessary to “check your grades” several times a

class, or text your friends, or take pictures or videos and upload them to any kind of social media during

class time. And, you should never take a picture of anyone in this classroom without their permission!!

Page 6: · Web viewHole’s Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology, 12th Edition (Shier). Mc Graw Hill. Link for student access on website or at:

9. I expect to provide a healthy learning environment within this classroom. This means that I cannot allow

anyone to detract my attention from my primary job: to educate you and your classmates. I will not

tolerate repeated interruptions to correct childish behavior, or to write unnecessary passes. I will try to

teach each and every one of you and give you the proper amount of attention, but not at the expense of

the rest of the class!

Extra Help ???????????????????

Please do not hesitate to ask for or seek extra help if you have trouble understanding any of the

concepts we cover in class. I am available after school almost any day, except Thursdays (Teacher PLC

meetings) if you tell me your coming, and certainly always during class. Don’t forget to check the class

website for power points or worksheets and weekly schedules. Your textbook resources are listed on the

website, too.
