Communication, Roles and Responsibilities and Co-operation

Question 1 What are the negative effects of lack of co-operation in a team sport of your choice? (4)

Question 2 How does communication impact positively in volleyball? (4)

Question 3 Scenario style Question

Evaluate why this is happening in this game and the impact it is having on the team. (6)

Use your knowledge of roles and responsibilities, communication, co-operation and team dynamics.

“In a volleyball team, two players seem to be putting in little effort. When they are setting, they don’t appear on the same wavelength as the other players on the team, and when they are blocking they don’t seem to be putting a great deal of effort into their jumps. The other players on the team appear to be working harder to try to make up for this. However, despite their efforts, there is little interaction between spikers and setters”

Structural Aid

Define Co-operation in the intro sentence

Give at least 4 points regarding a lack of co-operation and the impact it has on your performance.

Structural Aid

Define communication in the intro sentence.

Give a least 4 points with reflection on how communication impacts positively on the court.

Use your thought shower on communication to reinforce your points.

Homework 3 Scenario Style Question

Look at the picture above

Analyse the impact of this injury on team performance. You must refer to the social factor impacting on performance and one other factor (Emotional).

(8)

Brainstorm the number of points you can develop relating to your main Factor. (Social) Minimum of 4 points

Which other factor can you use to reinforce your points? Emotional Remember the second factor should not be discussed in isolation. It should be used to reinforce your assessment and create more depth.

Thought shower linked to picture Time in the game Uncertainty of roles , forced to adapt roles and responsibilities Players affected by team mates injuries as they are close knit Group dynamics and harmony impacted. What if the best player is off the court and is the main scorer who

builds team spirit. Confidence of those on the court shaken. If it is the captain who will step up to the mark to lead , regroup, refocus and motivate the players on the

floor Huge expectations of other players (more pressure) Subs will feel the strain but also the opportunity to show their potential Strength of character to cope with injury Injured player will draw on the support of team mates to cope with injury Forced back to Storming stage where frustrations may occur as style of play is different.

GAME ANALYSIS - OBSERVATION SCHEDULE

In the game of Volleyball there are 5 main situations where teams can win points.

Service – This is when the serving team score a clean ace off the first pass as the Defending team are unable to return the ball.

Opponent Error – This is when your opponents do not manage to play the ball back in your court.

Block – This is when you stop the opposition attacking and make a successful block during the game.

Transition Attack – This is when the ball has been returned, at least once, over the net and a team win the rally. 1st attack after serve reception – Team play a successful attacking shot on the first play. Opponent serve – This is when your opponent serves at or into the net.

Once we have completed an observation schedule on a game we will be able to make some comments on how our team performed.

33

Reflection Exercises

TASK 1

Team reflection sheets are frequently used to help investigate your own team strengths and weaknesses and that of your opposition.

Once you have decided on an attacking structure, the 1-2-1 formation and a defensive strategy to cover space, the next step would be to observe your future opponents playing. This will help your team to decide upon an attacking strategy to play against your opposition.

Aim of the observation – To identify strengths and weaknesses of your opponents’ ability to defend attacking shots.

The team being observed ___________________________

The observation is done whilst a game is played. As a team you are simply watching your opponents playing against another team and then reflecting on opposition strengths and weaknesses which will dictate your attacking play when you come to compete against them. The focus is only on their defensive abilities. As a group you must answer the questions below and then at the end of the match reflect on the results as a TEAM.

Evaluation Points Yes NoWhen their opponents get a chance to spike is there always an attempt by one or more players to block?

Are the Blocks usually successful?

Do they regularly leave spaces of the court uncovered?

How good are they at preventing the ball from hitting the floor? Poor Fair Good

How good are they at directing the first pass accurately to a player at the front court? Poor Fair Good

From the list below, which 2 attacking shots do they find most difficult to deal with? Tick the 2 skills below

SpikeTip over the netVolley to front courtVolley to back court

Conclusion based on the observations made – Future plans

34

Reflection Exercises

TASK 2

Your attacking strategy is to play a 3 touch attack. In order to run this successfully it is important that a team builds their ability to

Move quickly to the ball Dig to front court Volley set Spike Have an alternative attacking shot Communicate as a unit Make decisive decisions at pace Have alternatives to vary the strategy (Tempo changes, back court hitters, shot variation etc) Select players in roles to ensure we use our individual strengths- best skills to set up an attack

During this course you have used a variety of team building exercises, co-operation drills, simulations drills and conditioned game. It is important to constantly reflect on every match and on the effectiveness of your strategy and self-reflection exercises can be a useful approach to train to develop social and physical factors and to monitor tactical implementation and the communication/cooperation within the team.

Self-Reflection as a team

Evaluation point Yes NoAre we giving the setter a good pass in?

Are we attacking from the front of the court?

Are we playing a high accurate set?

Playing effective spikes?

Attempting alternative shots?

Playing effective alternative shots?

Scoring points directly from the strategy?

Are hitters moving as an attacking unit?

Is the tempo being varied?

Conclusion based on the observations made – Future plans

Activity: Volleyball

It is the league deciding match and it is match point against you. The score is 24-23 and it is your teams’ service.

How does this situation impact on tactics? Skills?

Tactics Time out

Strengths and Weaknesses

Principles of Play

What are the strengths and weaknesses of your opposition? What is their likely attacking option to finish the game? How do we cope with the unexpected? “All bases covered. How will you defend the attack to ensure tight coverage and limit attacking potential? What are your strengths in the counter attack? (Plan ahead , tempo and direction of attack ) What serve is going to create the biggest impact? (How and where) The serve must go in or the game is over- lots of pressure on this player

Impacts

There might be confusion about roles within the attacking and defensive unit due to pressure. If cue recognition does not occur early the game will be conceded as players will be unable to adapt

quickly. Wrong decisions being made. Might be unlikely to go for a big serve as the pressure is on. If you don’t consider service, defensive unit, and transition to attack throughout the whole point the

game will be conceded. (Lots of strategic play to consider)

Skill level drops due to lack of confidence in own ability. (server, setter ,hitter) Display weakened service strategy and blocking etc – fear of mistake.

Impact

Opposition able to score easily against a weekend defence and inconsistent play

Last moments of play – tired

Impact

Skill Level drops due to fatigue, mistakes /errors made

Section 2: Scenario Style Questions

Scenario

Physical FIP

Skills

Physical

45

Social issues which might affect performance

Roles and Responsibilities

If players do not fulfil roles because of pressure coverage will be impossible. Important point in the match – Players tighten up and forgot strategy

Communication

What is the impact of not having a unit block? Players might go against the game plan under pressure and not work as a tight unit which must

happen in this situation. Have players communicate clearly their common goal in the time out to direct focus and keep

everyone on the same page. Otherwise, the attack will be un-coordinated and lack flair and creativity and the match will be conceded.

Emotions and mental factors at such a crucial time might impact the team cohesion.

Impact

Unable to move early into position for counter attack and read the game early and respond to opposition cues if a lack of verbal and non-verbal communication. Listening skills impaired

What if the setter does not communicate early passage of play in the counter attack? Decisions are rash and players can begin to feel isolated and frustrated.

Team Dynamics

Players will feel the pressure from their team mates – Social Loafing could occur Friction in the team since it has gotten to this point in the first place.

Impacts

Frustrations and arguments between team mates which will impact unity and fluidity of play. Less likely to choose set strategies since there has been a break down in trust and confidence. Decision making delayed because of a lack of communication

Social

46

What emotions could you be feeling?

Fear

Fear of failure and making a mistake

Impact

Worried that the serve will go into the net, out the court or not pressurise opposition and set them up for a strong attack.

You will let the team down Self-doubt at a crucial movement as nerves cause tension. Overcooking an attacking counter attack or playing a safe set rather than the one which is most

effective. Consistency and accuracy of placement and skill execution may be comprised because of anxiety. Trying to remove yourself from the most important play “pulling back or hiding” Focus and concentration could be impacted affecting decision making “freeze”. Dwelling on shots

earlier on in the match which could have prevented this situation in the first place.

Anger

It is such a close game you are annoyed with yourself and other team mates for careless reception errors, service mistakes etc. You are struggling to control anger and emotions.

Impact

Do you make the right/wrong decision? “Choke” Do you do something out of character in the last point.

Decision Making

Do you make the right or wrong decisions to ensure you win the match? Are decisions made fast or slow?

Level of Arousal

You desperately want to win but get over aroused which leads to you over anticipating a signal and moving to late or too early (Timing impaired) (Example)

Confusion and lack of focus

Concentration

Lose track of play Miss vital cues from you teammates Careless mistakes which could cost you the match Cannot sustain focus due to mental exhaustion
