This report highlights the recent activities of the offices of the Campus Dean, Student Services and Business and Industry:

Campus Activities – Brenda Edleston

The students in the Agri-Biotechnology program recently visited the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center (March 3) and the Biosecurity Research Institute (March 12) both on the campus of Kansas State University. We have since been contacted by the CFO/Interim CEO of Heartland Plant Innovations at the Wheat Innovation Center asking for referrals of our students to fill open positions in his firm.

Amy Balaun, T-Bird Bookstore manager, set up a one-day bookstore on the Geary campus on March 4. The GCC students spent approximately $1,100 on Cloud clothing and miscellaneous items.

Cathy Troupe and Brenda Edleston attended a TRAC-7 site coordinator’s meeting at Washburn Institute of Technology in Topeka on March 7. The grant management team expects to hear from the Department of Labor by mid-April whether or not the fourth year extension for the grant has been awarded.

Adjunct and fulltime faculty have taken advantage of some professional development activities. On March 7 and 8, Darrin Jones conducted help sessions for using the College’s learning management system, Canvas. Another training session on assessing instructional effectiveness is scheduled for March 28 and 29.

The Geary County Campus is hosting a student intern from Junction City High School until the end of the spring term. She is assisting in our science labs doing prep work. She will also sit in on lecture classes in Human Anatomy and Physiology and selected math courses. This intern is working for and being supervised by Craig Lamb, Cindy Lamberty, Cathy Troupe and Mitch Stimers.

Student Services Activities – Jennifer Zabokrtsky

Recruitment/Admissions/Scholarships

Laura MacLafferty and Jennifer Zabokrtsky administered the COMPASS placement test to 24 prospective students between February 15 and March 17.

Military/Veterans/Financial Aid

On February 20, Ronald Rightly, Veterans Counselor, spoke to students, faculty and staff about employment services offered to veterans at the Junction City Workforce Center.

On March 13, Ronald Rightly also offered a resume writing workshop on campus for student veterans.

On February 26, Student Services staff and faculty advisors attended a National Academic Advising Association Webinar, entitled ‘Soldiers to Students: Academic Advising for Returning Veterans.’

Laura MacLafferty and Patti Elliott have created a Veterans Registration form to better track student veterans at Cloud.

Enrollment/Advising/Transfer

Second Start classes began March 24.

As of March 13, 90 students were enrolled in at least one Second Start course. Of those 90, 20 are new students enrolled in Second Start only.

New Student Orientation for Second Start students was March 21.

Other Activities

Geary County Campus staff and faculty are preparing for the annual Black and Gold awards banquet, which will be April 11 at the Marriott Convention Center.

Business and Industry Training – Jason York

CDL Phase I training will be held on March 24 and 26. An evening session will be conducted April 7-10. CDL Phase II training (behind-the-wheel driving) will resume on March 31 with instructional driving. DMV examinations will be scheduled at the Junction City DMV.

Motorcycle Safety Training was held on March 21-23 and will be repeated on April 4-6. A special weekend for active duty and retired military and spouses is scheduled for April 25-27.

In cooperation with JoDee Aldridge-Ball:

o Twenty-nine students started CNA Online-Hybrid courses in March.

o The next CNA Online-Hybrid training begins April 7, and thirty seats are available.

o We will begin two sections of Certified Medication Aide training in May.

o We are currently enrolling students for the summer 2014 EMT class.

o We are actively recruiting CNA instructors for all communities throughout the College’s service area. We are in need of instructors and any referrals are appreciated.

CCCC hosted the Kansas Council of Deans and Directors of Continuing Education and Community Service. Thirty-two participants from community colleges and technical schools across the state came to Concordia to discuss innovation, collaboration, and best practices. Bruce Graham provided a presentation on Wind Energy and gave a tour to the CCCC wind turbines. Thank you to everyone who participated in hosting the event. The group had a great time at Cloud!

On March 25, Jason York will meet with the North Central Kansas Rural Development Council.

Re: Tuition & Fee Recommendation Academic Year 2014-2015

We recommend the Board of Trustees approve a $1.00 per credit hour increase in tuition for academic year 2014-2015 for all Cloud County students and a $2 increase for non-Cloud County residents. We also are recommending the following fee increases for 2014-2015:

1. $1 for registration fees

2. $1 for technology fees

3. $3 for Geary County Facility fees

4. Change the online fee from $75 per class to $25 per credit hour

If approved, these increases will generate approximately $118,000 in new revenue for College operations, $38,000 for on-going technology purchases and updates and an additional $23,600 for future lease payments for the Geary County Campus. This brings the Geary County Campus student facility fees up to $10 per credit hour which was the plan when the Science Building was constructed.

A. Emeritus Status. Each year the Board is asked to consider retired faculty and administrators for “Emeritus” status which means retired with merit. This honor is bestowed upon faculty and administrators who have given 20 or more years of meritorious service to the College. This honor is to be bestowed at least one year after retirement from the College. This year the administration is recommending Everett Miller for this honor.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Bestow the title of Emeritus upon Everett Miller.

B. Retirement – Robert Maxson. Robert Maxson has submitted a letter of notification of his intent to retire from his position as Vice President for Administrative Services effective April 30, 2014. Bob has been an employee at Cloud County Community College since September 2006. His notification of retirement is enclosed.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Accept the retirement of Robert Maxson effective April 30, 2014.

C. Resignation – Laura MacLafferty. Laura MacLafferty has resigned her position as Admissions Counselor/Military Liaison effective April 3, 2014. Laura has been an employee at Cloud County Community College since July 2012. Her letter of resignation is enclosed.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Accept the resignation of Laura MacLafferty effective April 3, 2014 and authorize the administration to fill the Admissions Counselor/Military Liaison position vacancy.

D. Contract Renewal for Basketball Coaches – 2014-2015. The administration recommends the contracts for the full-time Men’s Basketball Coaches and the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach for the 2014-2015 contract year be renewed.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Renew the contracts for Chad Eshbaugh, Lance Carter and Brady Jasper effective April 1, 2014.

D. Agronomy Instructor. The search committee has completed its work, and the committee and the President recommend the appointment of Erin Thornburgh to the full-time, nine-month position of Instructor in Agronomy effective August 11, 2014.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve the appointment of Erin Thornburgh to the position of Instructor in Agronomy on a full-time, KPERS-covered, faculty contract effective August 11, 2014, at the nine-month salary of $35,245 plus fringe benefits.

E. TRiO Director. The search committee has been reviewing applications and interviewing candidates for this position. If available, a recommendation will be made for this position.

A. Cook Series. The Peterson Farm Boys will present “They Grow It” Thursday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m. in Cook Theatre.

B. High School Basketball and Volleyball All-Star Weekend. The High School Basketball and Volleyball All-Star Weekend will be Saturday and Sunday, March 29 and 30.

C. High School Regional Music Festival. The High School Regional Music Festival will be held at the College Saturday, March 29.

D. CCCC KICKS Jazz Band & Republic County High School Jazz Band Concert. The CCCC Kicks Jazz Band & Republic County High School Jazz Band will be in concert Monday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m. in Cook Theatre.

H. Junior Preview Day. Junior Preview Day will be Thursday, April 3. This is a time for High School Juniors to visit campus, explore majors and receive information on financial aid, housing and other areas.

I. High School Art Show. The High School Art Show will be Friday, April 4, in Arley Bryant Gymnasium.

L. Employee Recognition Luncheon. We are trying something new this year. Employees busy schedules often conflict with an evening dinner. We are moving the Recognition Program to lunch on the in-service day April 17, at 11:30 a.m.

J. GCC Spring Fling. The Geary County Campus Spring Fling will be Saturday, April 26.

K.GCC Graduation Reception. The Geary County Campus Graduate Reception will be Friday, May 9.

L. Nurses’ Pinning. The Pinning Ceremony for those students receiving their Associate of Nursing will be Friday, May 16, at 4:00 p.m. in Arley Bryant Gymnasium.
