>What can I study at Penn State Hazleton?

You can complete the fi rst two years of most of Penn State’s baccalaureate degree programs—more than 160 in all—before fi nishing at another location, most commonly University Park. It’s called the 2+2 plan, and more than 60 percent of Penn State students take this approach. Penn State of-fers degrees in areas ranging from agriculture and natural resources to engineering, business to social sciences, computers to communica-tions. Or stay at Hazleton all four years and earn one of six bachelor’s degrees or one of seven associate degrees.

>What if I’m not ready to choose a major when I enroll?

Many students begin college un-sure of what they want to study. Others start in one area, then change their minds. In most in-stances, you don’t need to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year. If you are uncer-tain where to begin, you can enroll in the Division of Undergraduate Studies and explore a variety of academic programs before making a decision.

>What types of living accommodations are available?

Penn State Hazleton’s three residence halls offer a variety of housing options to meet students’ needs: traditional double rooms, suite-style living, and modern town-houses. Amenities include basic ex-panded cable; high-speed Ethernet connections in rooms and wireless service in lobbies; and study and TV lounges in each residence hall, as well as game rooms for students in North and South Halls. Each stu-dent is provided with an extra-long twin bed, chest of drawers, desk with chair, and wardrobe closet; one microwave/refrigerator/freezer unit is included in each room. Safe-ty features include professional live-in staff, a computerized fi re safety system with sprinklers, and 24-hour card access to North and South Halls. Visit www.hfs.psu.edu/hazle-ton for more information about on-campus living. Off campus, you’ll fi nd plenty of privately owned housing options in locations con-venient to campus. Students living on or off campus have access to the dining hall, the Highacres Café, and the Higher Grounds Cyber Café in the Charles T. Butler Teaching and Learning Resource Center.

>What if I need help paying for my education?

About 87 percent of our students receive some form of fi nancial aid. Our Student Aid Offi ce pro-vides information and professional counseling on student loans, work-study programs, and the many scholarships available to Penn State Hazleton students.

>Are the Hazleton campus and community safe?

Penn State Hazleton is a very safe and secure campus, with a campus police force on duty twenty-four hours a day.

>What academic support services are available?

Penn State Hazleton offers numerous resources to support academic suc-cess. The Teaching and Learning Resource Center (TLRC) offers a variety of instructional aids, including peer tutoring, developmental read-ing, study skills, computer- assisted instruction, and writing skills. The Offi ce of Disability Services, housed in TLRC, provides assistance and guidance to students. The Academic Advising Center is also available for academic and career planning.

?The Math Dimension offers faculty and peer tutoring along with study group sessions to help students improve math skills and scores.

>Does the University provide computers? Can I connect my own computer to the Penn State system?

Computers are available in sev-eral computer labs on campus. Resident students can access the Penn State network through direct Ethernet lines in their rooms. All students can connect wirelessly almost anywhere on campus. Need assistance? Call our fully staffed IT department.

>What kind of college life will I fi nd at Penn State Hazleton?

On-campus activities abound for those who wish to participate. You can join one of more than twenty student organizations, or attend cultural events, musical or comedy performances, or guest lectures. Act in a theatrical production. Infl uence campus and University programs and policy through the Student Government Association (SGA). Join in the annual Spring Week activities, including bands, barbecues, and a semiformal dance.

Compete in an intramural sport or work out in the weight room. The possibilities are numerous.

Off-campus, great shopping and dining opportunities are just a few minutes’ drive. A mere two miles away is the Laurel Mall with its state-of-the-art multiscreen movie theatre. Lots of other activities, ranging from semiprofessional sports to concert venues to more shopping and dining, are within thirty minutes of the campus.

The nearby Pocono Mountains offer skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, (you can even take skiing as a class!) mountain biking, hiking, fi shing, and other outdoor recre-ation opportunities. Three state parks, multiple golf courses, and a ski resort are a few destinations just fi fteen minutes from campus.

On autumn weekends, students travel two hours west to Nittany Lion football games at the Uni-versity Park campus. Many other activities are held at University Park, including THON, the annual student-run dance marathon ben-efi ting kids with cancer. Penn State Hazleton’s THON team is one of the most successful in terms of fundraising and participation.

>What types of athletic programs and facilities are available?

Play on one of our varsity athletic teams for both men and women. Or take part in our growing club and intramural sports program. Fitness facilities include three rooms for strength training and aerobics, two gyms, illuminated soccer and softball fi elds, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and outdoor tennis courts and multi-purpose sports court.

>May I have a car on campus?

Yes, but it must be registered with Police Services (free of charge) and parked only in designated student parking areas.

>Is public transportation to and from campus available?

The Hazleton Transit Authority provides free bus service from the city of Hazleton to the Penn State campus.

—Overlooking the scenic Conyngham Valley, Penn State’s 125-acre Hazleton campus combines historic fi eldstone buildings with modern architecture in a friendly, student-centered environment.

Location

—Located off Interstates 80 and 81; twenty minutes from the winter ski areas of the Poconos and two hours from Philadelphia, New York City, and Penn State University Park

Academic Programs

—A valuable degree: Penn State graduates enjoy career opportunities and earnings that are among the top in the nation

—More than 160 Penn State majors can be started here and completed at University Park or another Penn State campus

—6 baccalaureate (four-year) degree programs and 7 associate (two-year) degree programs can be completed at Hazleton

—3 minors can be completed to complementa degree

—Average class size: 24

—Student-to-faculty ratio: 19 to 1

Our Students*

—1,060 full- and part-time students

—27 percent of students are from out of state (as far away as Colorado and Florida)

—Approximately 55 percent males, 45 percent females

—One-third of students live on campus, one-third live off campus, and one-third reside locally and commute

—The majority of students are traditional age (18–20), with an increasing number of adult learners

—38 percent are students of ethnically diverse backgrounds

—Nearly 60 percent of all Penn State students spend their fi rst two years at one campus before moving to University Park to fi nish their degree (the 2+2 plan)

—85 percent of students enrolled in a baccalaureate (four-year) degree program stay at the Hazleton campus for two years and move to another campus (usually University Park) to complete their degree

—23 percent of students explore their major options by enrolling in the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) before making a decision

houses a state-of-the-art multimedia classroom and computer lab, the Higher Grounds Cyber Café,
