Mac ‘n Cheese. Laundry detergent. Cookies. They’re the little things that make up a huge part of college life.

Seriously. When you’re hungry at 1 a.m., you need 99¢ of sustenance. When your clothes are dirty, you need to somehow make them clean again. It’s these little things that make all the difference. Like:

Learn. Then do.

At the U of M Crookston research, volunteer and other experiences are built right into your coursework. You do a lot beyond the classroom. You do.

You’ll work directly with tools of your intended trade. You may find yourself in a laboratory, plane cockpit, a field, forest, barn, riding ring, ag processing facility, computer help desk, business board room, software engineering firm or corporate office. You’ll plan, develop and implement projects that fit your career field with supervised training—all to develop confidence and skills to dive right in to your own career.

This technology-driven, career-oriented approach means you graduate with an edge. So whether you kick-start your career or continue learning in grad school, you’ll be ready.

Not your typical classroom...

You won’t spend all your time perched in a desk here. Curriculum is designed around experiential learning. Depending on your major, you get these opportunities:

• Projects to analyze advertising, public relations, journalism and new media for real clients

• The only bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in the University of Minnesota system

• Teaching experience with the Early Childhood Development Center and regional schools

• Flight training

• Prescribed burns at Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge

• Tree planting at Chippewa National Forest

• Plant propagation

• Designing urban and environmental landscapes

• Award-winning judging teams in crops, livestock, dairy and equine

• Equine breeding, training and showing

• The only Collegiate FFA chapter in Minnesota

• A new informatics lab that offers some of the most advanced visualization and computer graphics technologies available

• Developing and implementing a business plan for an Equine Center

• The only bachelor’s-level software engineering program in the University of Minnesota system

• Academic initiatives with Microsoft, Oracle and IBM

• Enactus outreach projects in business, entrepreneurship and marketing

Real research to solve real challenges...

The right knowledge, guided by the right hands, will solve our world’s toughest problems—and dilemmas in our own backyard. U of M Crookston students are preparing to take part, beginning with hands-on work such as:

• Involvement in faculty research on biofuels, energy conservation, dairy cattle nutrition and food alternatives, and equine exercise physiology

• Studying greenhouse gas emissions

• Working with solar and wind energy

• Conducting wildlife census counts from an aircraft

• Grant-funded large scale biology and other sciences research

• Presenting research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR)

• Helping regional entrepreneurs develop marketing plans

• Business research with faculty in the Economic Development Administration (EDA) Center or the Center for Rural Entrepreneurial Studies (CRES)
