BEFORE REMOVING THE OLD TRANSMISSION

You MUST have a scanner and scan the vehicle for any codes. All codes MUST be fixed BEFORE installing the new transmission.

Pro Tip :

Speed sensor codes or erratic shifting is a common complaint with this series of transmission. It is often caused by broken or damaged wiring connecting the speed sensors. It can be corrected by replacing the wiring pig tail with a repair kit(see photo).

DO NOT REUSE YOUR TORQUE CONVERTER BOLTS!Due to the close tolerances of the Bolt end and the converter face(see illustration) , the factory bolts cannot be reused without modification. You can grind the ends of the bolts (usually 3-5 threads) to shorten the bolt length. Or replace them with new.

Failure to correct bolt length will dimple the friction surface of the Torque Converter Clutch, and cause premature failure.

Adjust the shifter cable:

W00039 Rev 1.0 [Type text]

(3)Loosen the cable adjustment screw at the transaxle operating lever (Fig. 359). (4)Pull the transaxle operating lever fully forward to the park detent position. (5)Release the park brake, then rock the vehicle to assure it is in park lock. Reset the park brake. (6)Tighten the cable adjustment screw to 8 Nm (70 inch lbs.). Gearshift cable should now be properly adjusted. (7)Check adjustment by using the preceding procedure.

(1)Park the vehicle on level ground and set the parking brake. (2)Place the gearshift lever in park (P) gate position and remove key.

Filling the 41TE:

Pro Tip: Clean the dip stick with brake clean to get a more accurate reading.

BEFORE YOU START THE VEHICLE fluid must be touching the bottom of the cross hatch.

Make sure the Vehicle is on level ground

Start the vehicle and move the shift through all ranges pausing for 3 secs in each range. Add fluid till it reaches the cold mark on the dipstick.

Final level check should be done witho engine idling o transmission in Park or Neutralo temperature must be between 70-180* See chart below

Fluid should read at the top of the cross hatches. DO NOT OVERFILL

*If temp is too low select manual 2 and stall test for a max of 15 seconds at a time till temperature is reached.

Quick Learn:

1. Use a scan tool capable of performing the Quick learn procedure2. TFT 158-230°F (70-110°C), Move the selector in/out of gear 3 times3. Select the Quick learn process from the scan tool menu4. To perform the Quick Learn Procedure, the following conditions must be met:

4.1. The brakes must be applied.4.2. The engine speed must be above 500 rpm.4.3. The throttle angle (TPS) must be less than 3 degrees.4.4. The shift lever position must stay in PARK until prompted to shift to overdrive.4.5. The shift lever position must stay in overdrive after the Shift to Overdrive prompt,

until the scan tool indicates the procedure is complete.5. The calculated oil temperature must be above 60°F and below 200°F.

The quick learn procedure will not run if:• DTC’s are set• TFT is not between 158-230 °F (70-110°C)• The brake switch is not working• TP is 0% but engine RPM increases during the test• P/N switch is improperly adjusted or is not functioning correctly• Line pressure control system is malfunctioning

After this procedure it still may take several days of driving the vehicle for the transmission to fully adapt and begin to shift properly. You MUST drive easy for the first 300miles after a Quick Learn is done. This includes no towing or accelerations above ½ throttle.

Quick learn should be performed any time:

The battery is disconnected Major transmission repair Solenoid block replacement TCM calibration changed

Once the reprogramming and Quick Learn steps are complete, perform a thorough test drive with multiple accelerations and from a stop with light to medium throttle application.

Rescan the vehicle. If codes are present, compare these to the original codes. Use a scan tool for DTC’s and correct the codes and re-road test the vehicle.

This transmission WILL FAIL if the Quick Learn process is not completed. This failure

could happen during initial road test.

INSTALLATION CHECKLIST

o Scan vehic le and fix al l codes

o Replace the cool ing system (Radiator) and replace or c lean cool ing l ines

o Inspect flex plate for cracks or breakage. Damaged flex p lates are common

o Compare bolt pattern on flex plate to bolt pattern on new torque converter

o Inspect crankshaft pilot bore for wear and apply grease to aid with installation

o Co m p a r e r e p l a ce m en t t r a n s mi s s i o n an d t o r q u e converter to original before installation

o Verify all dowel pins are present, clean, and in good condition – these are critical for proper alignment

o Do not tighten bel l housing bolts with force; may damage torque converter if shifted in transit

o Inspect wiring harness and connector for damage and /or corrosion

o Inspect entire electrical system including ground, battery, alternator, mass air flow sensor and throttle position sensor.

o Inspect axle shaft splines and check transmission/engine mounts

o Install supplied tail shaft housing gaskets and seals

o If 4WD application, replace transfer case input shaft seal

o Inspect transmission mounts, carrier bearing, driveshaft, yoke and U-joints. Excessive vibration due to defective mounts and other faulty driveline parts is the main cause of broken cases.
