Moving AbilitiesMost athletes stick to one or a few specific track and field skills, such as: sprints, endurance, hurdles & jumps, etc. In order for athletes to move up a level, they must have their mind already set on what skill(s) they enjoy doing. It is important that athletes have training and knowledge in: warm-up, technique/form, agility, balance, coordination, self motivation, speed, and other aspects more specific to each skill before wanting to move up levels. Their performance at tryouts will determine the level they can participate in.

Cost/ParticipationIt costs $99/month for athletes to get training and attend any program that their facility offers. The number of hours an athlete spends training is up to the athlete. Although, it is likely that the more hours an athlete spends training, the faster they will get tested for a new belt.

Tryouts/SeasonWhen one wants to start karate, they don’t have to tryout as everyone starts from scratch (aiming for white belt). There is no season (it’s year round) unless an athlete competes in a circuit of tournaments. They will first go to the provincial tournament, then may advance to the national tournament, then team Canada and finally World Championships. An athlete in a circuit of tournaments will have a season that lasts a full year.

Moving AbilitiesIn martial arts (especially karate) levels are determined through belt colours. Athletes are tested for their belts, when their trainer(s) think they are ready. There is no fee for the testing in most martial arts facilities. When tested for a new belt colour, athletes are tested on several aspects such as: stances, strikes, chops, blocks, kicks, shuffles, and other martial art skills. If they pass the test, they will obtain a new colour belt and will continue to more elite training to one day be prepared for the next belt.

Moving AbilitiesThere are many factors that affect the ability for an athlete to move levels. For girls, it is based on their abilities and skills on: vault, uneven bars, balance bean and floor exercise. For boys, it is based on their abilities and skills on: pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar, and floor exercise. In gymnastics, gender decides what apparatus one competes on, which means moving levels for an athlete differs for a girl and a boy.
