Our 4th generation family farm is humbly blessed to care for this land. Many ask about the life of a family that farms, so here is our Cooley story. In 1946, Papa “Gene” Cooley returned home from WWII to plant the first peach trees on the farm with his father and brother, Ansel. Papa Cooley was a true southern gentleman, whose love for his family was immeasurable. As a husband, father and farmer, Papa Cooley taught his family that integrity and faith are essential ingredients to life. He expressed the importance of always being honest and never losing faith, no matter the circumstances. Papa Cooley was pleased that James encompassed a passion to not only continue the family farm, but to expand with different aspirations as well. Papa Cooley would say to James, “Go for it son and dream big! You don’t get places by just watching others.”It’s safe to say that James E. Cooley “went for it”. Today, James farms 115 acres of strawberries, 900 acres of peaches and 40 acres of blackberries. Among other crops, James is venturing into growing pickle cucumbers and yellow crookneck squash. Mr. Cooley is a farmer that farms with all of his heart, rising early each morning and working past dark to fulfill his day to day tasks of farming. Strawberry Hill is blessed to be surrounded by the best employees that are not only skilled, but have their heart invested in their job as well. James, with his wife Kathi, raised four daughters on the farm through both bountiful harvests and meager crops. You see, being a farmer, you are never promised a crop, but you are promised that God will provide!

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

In 2002, James and his daughter Brooke were involved in a motorcycle wreck that forever changed the Cooley family. James was in a coma and on life support for 29 days, finally opening his eyes on the 30th day. There is no doubt that God is truly the master physician; James and Brooke are both living miracles. It has been a long journey that God carried the entire family through.Today, James recalls his father’s words and continues to “Dream big!” His wife, Kathi, oversees the Strawberry Hill USA Café. Brandi and Bethani, two of his daughters, work beside him daily to carry on the family tradition. Brooke is a cosmetologist and owns her own salon in Boiling Springs, SC. Brittani is a Special Education teacher in Columbia, SC. James and Kathi have three grandchildren, Brooklyn Faith, Jameson and Graeson. Our family works together to create a farm where friends and family gather to enjoy the crops of each season, eat at our little café and enjoy a scoop of homemade ice cream.
