View of WWI in America Mobilizing for War Todays Objective After todays lesson, students will be able too Describe the causes of World War I Explain when/why the United States joined the war Essential Skill State implications and consequences Human Timeline As a class we will create a timeline showing the causes of World War I and Americas entry into the war. If I gave you a sheet, please tape it to your clothes The rest of the class will move the timeline pieces (humans) into place Heightened sense of Nationalism (i.e. France sought to regain Alsace- Lorraine from Germany in 1871) Heightened sense of Imperialism (i.e., The quest for overseas colonies in Africa, the Middle East and Asia brought European powers into conflict Heightened sense of Militarism (i.e., In response to Britains dominant navy, Germany increased the size of its navy, stockpiled weapons, and increased the size of its army) The formation of the Triple Alliance (Germany/Austria- Hungary/Italy) prompted toe formation of the Triple Entente (France/Russia/Great Britain) The Serbian Black Hand assassinates Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the throne) Austria-Hungary issued a harsh ultimatum to Serbia Russia mobilized its army in defense of Serbia Germany declared war on Russia France declared war on Germany After Germany invaded France (through neutral Belgium), Britain declared war on Germany The Battle of the Marne claimed over 500,000 lives and was symbolic of the horrors of war on the Western Front Wilson calls on Americans to be neutral in thought and in action German U-boats sank the Lusitania off the coast of Ireland; 128 Americans died Zimmerman note intercepted and published in American newspapers President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress for a declaration of war against Germany Political Cartoon Analyze the political cartoon with your partner Then, answer the questions below the cartoon together on the back of the cartoon Discuss Who is speaking from the window? What position does she likely hold regarding American intervention in the war? What main point or message does this cartoon illustrate? What role might cartoons such as this have played in American citizens views of going to war? To fight or not to fight: Debate Read your assigned speech and think about the questions on the bottom of the speech: What were President Wilsons reasons for entering the war? What were Senator Norriss reasons for neutrality? Debate your side! Conclusion What were the main causes of World War I? When and why did the United States enter the war? Mapping the War Using any notes or an atlas, fill in the maps as best as possible Color and label neatly! This counts as a homework grade!
