THE ILDEST ADVENTURE RACE IN TEXAS A s I held Sophia’s hand, and saw that little life enter the world for the first time, I was reminded once more that our work isn’t just saving a child; we are saving an entire family. When Sophia first came to see me, all she had to her name were the clothes on her back. She was six months pregnant and had just left an abusive relationship with the baby’s father who now wanted nothing to do with her or the child. Though she was staying with her family at the time, the house had been full before she arrived and they had been clear that her stay there wouldn’t last very long. She had no money, no job and was on the verge of homelessness with a baby coming in just a few short weeks. When she was referred to us by the Family Health Center, she hoped she could find some relief to her troubles in our care. We saw two things in Sophia—yes, she had fallen and needed our help, but she also was determined to get back on her feet. That was the beginning of a beautiful journey. We placed her in one of our apartments, and helped her through the process of rebuilding her life. She had no support, and that is how I ended up holding her hand as her beautiful baby boy entered the world. She called me when she went into labor and said she had no one to be with her as she gave birth, and she was wondering if I would come be with her at the hospital. In all my years at Care Net, I had never seen one of our babies come into the world, and it was truly a gift. From that point, Sophia gained new confidence and determination as a mother. Within the next month, she was in a new apartment and had found a job at Baylor. She has achieved the goals she set for herself and her family, and I am so proud of how hard she has worked to become an independent, self-sufficient mother. This year’s Sanctity of Human Life Family Picnic and Bake Sale was a great success, thanks to the many of you who

came and showed your support. Thank you!

We also want to say a BIG thank you to everyone who helped make this important event possible.

FOR SANCTITY

OF HUMANLIFE SUNDAY

Oh my gosh, I’m having so much fun back in the

classroom! I can’t wait until we have a classroom that wasn’t a prayer room a minute ago, a play room an hour ago and a boardroom last night. We have to have a sense of humor here (it’s in our job descriptions), but we are incredibly ready to have spaces furnished as a dining room, a classroom, a kitchen, a nursery and a playground.

We can only imagine the joy and excitement of little ones coming to class with their mommies as they set foot onto Holy ground – where the Spirit of the Lord lives and dwells and supplies relentless love for His people.

A month ago, I started a weekly journey with 11 women and their 8 children entitled, “Getting Ahead in a Just Get By World,” wherein the participants (including myself ) investigate what poverty looks like in our community. I have been shocked at how little I knew – like the following:

1. Free electricity & free minutes – all you have to do it ask for it. (Who knew?)

2. Frozen food trucks – sell overpriced food in low income neighborhoods, where many have no transportation but have food stamp cards.

3. Extra Money – people often make extra money by picking up pecans, making bows and hairstyling out of their homes.

4. Income – most make less than $10/hour, most pay 50% of their income on rent, and many have debt loads in excess of 45%.

5. Nutrition – most were not taught how to shop for and prepare fresh meats and vegetables.

I grieve the lost opportunity to spend more time teaching girls to cook, shop, stretch their money, discipline their children and grow in God’s Truth, but this is a new season. In our eager anticipation of the new support center and guesthouse, we have already ramped up our educational opportunities to include:

1. A certification program of some kind to be offered monthly that would give clients a competitive advantage when looking for a job.

2. A Getting Ahead pilot project to ignite other groups across the city.

3. A marriage preparation class, called Marriage on the Rock , to help many of these couples learn what a healthy marriage looks like and take the next step of commitment.

We have seen and experienced the goodness of the Lord in this new season. All numbers are up for all of our programs, and we are in the sweet spot of the pro-life movement!

Blessings,

Deborah McGregor, CEOCare Net Pregnancy Center of Central Texas
