APPLIED ELECTRONICS TAKES ON LONDON 2012 SUMMER OLYMPICSApplied Electronics is pleased to be the Broadcast System supplier and integrator for the London 2012 Olympics for the Nordic country broadcasters: YLE Finland, TV2 and DRTV Denmark, NRK Norway, and SVT Sweden. These broadcasters produce over 300 hours of programming for a variety of platforms including television, radio, the web, and mobile applications. Applied Electronics has been a continuous Nordic

APPLIED ELECTRONICS OPEN HOUSE - A HUGE SUCCESSOn Thursday, June 7th, Applied Electronics welcomed clients and industry partners to its new 55,000 square foot home at 1260 Kamato Road in Mississauga, Ontario. Some guests embarked on staff-guided tours of our new corporate head office while others were welcomed to roam the 2-storey facility freely to discover numerous technological spaces throughout the building.

Among several fully-equipped meeting spaces which lead to in-depth discussions and demonstrations, other technological attractions that intrigued guests were the SUN News and Humber College’s School of Media Studies & Information Technology HD mobile broadcast trucks, as well as Christie Digital rear projection cubes and MicroTiles digital displays.

Completing the event with an official ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the main entrance to the building, owners of Applied Electronics, Susan, Paul and John Stechly ritually cut the ceremonial red ribbon to inaugurate their new facility in the presence of industry colleagues.

TVRS & TVRM BOTH UPGRADE TO HDMembers of the VOX broadcast family catering to the province of Quebec, TVRS and TVRM are both

regional television stations that offer unique and rich programming to their local communities – programming that revolves around quality, informative, innovative ideas, and different opinions on subjects of public interest while covering the regional events. Both stations recently upgraded to full HD workflows with the help of Applied Electronics in the design, supply and integration of new production and playout solutions for their respective facilities.TVRS now boasts a Ross Video SoftMetal 3000 video server (SMS) for production, which comes from a line of integrated media servers with I/O and storage all contained in a compact 3 RU package and can plug right into the IT network. SoftMetal uses a networked control scheme - allowing distributed control from anywhere on the network. It supports file based workflows - allowing content to flow nicely from editing to playout – and it is constructed using IT Server Grade components - for easy

maintenance and support. It also offers redundant hardware and solid signal interconnect panels. In addition, TVRS & TVRM has acquired three Ikegami HDK-77EC HD native multi-format CMOS camera systems for their production. Live broadcast shows such as Bingo on TVRS are now done using a Ross Video Crossover switcher in collaboration with a Ross Video Xpression suite and the Ross Video SoftMetal video server, which is integrated with Apple’s Final Cut Pro for a tapeless workflow.

Inception – let your social network in on the real story.

Having chosen Applied Electronics as their technology partner for system design, supply and integration, CHEK Media Group went on air in early 2010 making history as one of Canada’s only true independent broadcast stations with their very own news system, production control and master control.

About two years later, CHEK has already begun airing their simulcast shows in HD and are slowly converting all of their national commercials to HD.

Their local programming and local commercial will eventually be changed over to HD, with the next step being the conversion of their news operations.

SAIT RTBN PROGRAM LAUNCHES NEW HD STUDIO FACILITY

SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary has recently completed a major high definition upgrade of its broadcast production facilities for its Radio, Television and Broadcast News (RTBN) program. The SAIT RTBN program teaches the fundamentals of writing, directing, producing, live production and editing of video projects focussing on three core areas of Radio, Television and Broadcast News. The strong emphasis on hands-on learning and creativity enables student to choose the options that best fits their skills and interests, in preparation for challenging, creative and exciting careers in the evolving world of the media and broadcast industry of today and tomorrow. Applied Electronics was engaged to submit proposals for a two-stage project. The first component was to replace the video production switcher in the TV production studio, followed by a

high definition upgrade to the entire studio facility. The main goals of the project were to bring the facility up to modern standards and offer training on state-of-the art media production equipment and processes, and to integrate the new technology from other areas of the program in an end-to-end training solution. The project started with an evaluation of HD production switcher technology and resulted in the selection of a Ross Video Vision 2 multi-definition video switcher to replace the RVS-316 unit that had served them well for many years. The second phase of the project involved updating the entire production facility to state of the art high definition equipment. In consultation with SAIT’s instructors, department heads and technical staff, an end-to-end solution was devised around equipment from Ross Video to provide the key switcher, router, graphics, server and conversion components. Installation of the equipment was completed by SAIT’s in-house engineering staff with support from Applied Electronics’ technical group. The final step was the recent addition of new HD studio cameras. SAIT’s new studio facility was completed in time for the start of this past semester and now has one of the most advanced HD training facilities in the Prairies. CHEK NOW AIRING IN HD The University of Calgary’s new state-of-the-art learning and

research centre is a model for the 21st century library. A special part of the Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL ) is the Visualization Studio on the fourth floor which allows professional research to be displayed in detail on a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall high resolution screen, custom designed and built by Applied Electronics.Faculty members needed digital real-estate to simultaneously

view multiple digital objects in a collaborative environment, but the quality of that digital space also had to be at a high standard. Specifically, the resolution of the screens had to be crisp, latency could not be noticeable and it had to be easy for researchers to input their research data into the system. The Visualization Studio allows astronomers to explore deep space and the mysteries of the Aurora Borealis in new detail or geologists to map out soil sample data and discover new patterns.The large 15-screen monitor wall composed of a 3x5 array of 46-inch DNP Cross Prism screens made from an acrylic styrene copolymer material which are highly resistant to unstable projection environments, retains its dimensions and provides invisible seams. The result is a smooth, clean image – even close up. Bringing the screens to life are 15 Christie Digital Entero WUXGA LED illuminated DLP rear screen tiling projectors that display an ultra-high resolution of 9600 x 3240 pixels, purpose-built for 24/7 data monitoring environments. Located on a separate floor, the server room houses a Jupiter Systems Fusion Catalyst display wall processor and 25 Magenta Research Voyager fiber-optic transmitters that transmit uncompressed ultra-high resolution video signals between both rooms. The TFDL opened to students and faculty the first week of September 2011 with the Visualization Studio also visited by Ivy League schools as inspiration for their own new spaces.For more information about this project, please contact Kevin Stewart in our Calgary office.

Based in Vancouver, B.C., Side Street Post Production is a state-of-the-art studio that provides multi format conforming, grading, and visual effects. Side Street Post approached Applied Electronics to install a Christie CP2210 digital cinema projector into their colour correction suite. The challenge was incorporating a large projector into a room that posed space limitations while maintaining superior sound quality. Applied Electronics decided that the theatre itself would have to house the projector with a custom-designed lift that would allow for servicing of the unit.

Applied Electronics custom designed and installed a powered projector lift system for the Christie CP2210 DLP digital cinema projector while also configuring lens throw distances and foot lamberts for optimal performance. A custom Stewart screen was also designed to fit the space and installed into the theatre.

Applied Elecronics contracted Action Sound Construction to build the ceiling box that would house the projector and provide proper ventilation for cooling and sound dampening.

With grading suites to produce real-time, multi-node enhancements of RAW file formats in a D.I. theatre environment, Side Street Post now boasts a supreme presentation facility to please their clients.

JIM GOESSINGER • 15 YEARSJim began his career in 1972 at CHCH TV in Hamilton in Staging, Remote Production and Master Control. After four years at CHCH, he moved to CFTO where he became a Senior Editor on various CTV variety specials and television series. In 1982, he left CFTO and became a founding member of The Image Group (now known as SOHO Post) starting out as their Senior Editor. He quickly moved up to VP of Operations and Engineering and helped build it into a respected and innovative Post Production

and Animation facility. In 1997, he joined Applied Electronics as a Broadcast Sales Representative and after excelling in that role, he was promoted to Manager of Business Development in 2000. Three years later, he was promoted again to National Sales Manager, Broadcast and Post Production. With over 40 years of experience in the Broadcast and Post Production industries, Jim has successfully propelled the Division into what it is today. ROOSVELT LAMOUR • 5 YEARSAfter graduating from Maisonneuve College in 1998 with an Electronics degree, Roosvelt began his career in Harris’ Microwave Radio Communications Division. Six years later, he joined Applied Electronics as an A/V Service Technician. As one of our senior A/V Service Technicians on the Montréal team, Roosvelt has continued to play an intricate part of the A/V installations group. In support of the Becel Heart and Stroke Ride for Heart fundraising campaign, on June 3rd, Applied Electronics’ Corporate Bike Team conquered 25/50/75 km excursions which began at the Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto and proceeded onto the Gardiner Expressway east, north on the Don Valley Parkway up to York Mills Road, and then back down again. Our 25-rider team was composed of head office staff and family members. In addition to personal fundraising efforts, the team hosted fundraising events which included a raffle draw for a Raleigh Bike and an Applied Hearts Café which served a special menu catered by the riders themselves. Our team together raised over $13,600.00 in donations to support research that extends lives and improves existing treatments for heart disease and stroke. A huge Thank You goes out to all of the generous donors and supporters of our team, and to our riders for all the hard work in making this event a successful and memorable one!
