Vietnam?
Turn to your elbow neighbor…
and discuss how colonialism might spark a rise in nationalism among people who are under colonial rule.
Colonial Rule Weakens
• Long under colonial domination, many Southeast Asian nations achieved independence in the years immediately following WWII.
• The transition, however, was not always a smooth one.
Vietnam’s Struggle for Independence
• Although some Western countries decided to end their colonial presence in Southeast Asia willingly, others did not.
• In Vietnam, a group known as Vietminh fought French troops to win independence.
• They were led by a man named Ho Chi Minh who was communist.
• The Vietminh received assistance from China and the Soviet Union.
• Their major goal was independence, not expansion of communism.
• After years of fighting, the Vietminh defeated France to gain independence.
The War• The US supported France in trying to keep
control of Vietnam because of the Domino Theory
• When France finally decided to give up the fight and left Vietnam, the US stepped in
• The country was split into a North and South at the 17th parallel• Elections were to be held to unify the country• US was afraid that the people would choose
Ho Chi Minh and become communist, so elections were never held
• The US supported the South and their efforts against the North led by Ho Chi Minh
• North Vietnam’s regime was known as the Viet Cong.
• The war dragged on with thousands of American soldiers either injured or dead.
• Finally, in 1975 the US left Vietnam• After they left, the country reunited
and became a communist country
