The Arawak Indians were the first to inhabit Grenada, but they were all eventually massacred by the Carib Indians. When Columbus arrived in 1498 he encountered the Caribs, who continued to rule over the island for another 150 years. The French gained control of the island in 1672 and held on to it until 1762, when the British invaded. Black slaves were granted freedom in 1833. After more than 200 years of British rule, most recently as part of the West Indies Associated States, Grenada became independent on Feb. 7, 1974, with Eric M. Gairy as prime minister.In 1979, the Marxist New Jewel Movement staged a coup, and its leader, Maurice Bishop, became prime minister. Bishop, a protégé of Cuba's President Castro, was killed in a military coup on Oct. 19, 1983.

In an effort to establish order on the island and eliminate the Cuban military presence, U.S. president Ronald Reagan ordered an invasion of Grenada on Oct. 25, 1983, involving over 1,900 U.S. troops and a small military force from Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent. The troops met strong resistance from Cuban military personnel on the island but soon occupied it. After a gradual withdrawal of peacekeeping forces, a centrist coalition led by Herbert A. Blaize won a parliamentary majority in 1984. The New National Party (NNP), led by Keith C. Mitchell, won a majority in the 1995 parliamentary elections. He won reelection again in 1999 and 2003.

Geography                         This small nation consists of three islands: Grenada, Carriacou, and Petit Martinique. Grenada is by far the largest of the three, with a width of twelve miles (18 km) and a length of twenty-one miles (34 km). Its 133 sq. miles (440 sq. km.) are mountainous, volcanic terrain, reaching heights of over 2,750 feet atop Mount St. Catherine..

This topography provides Grenada with one of the loveliest and most varied environments in the Caribbean, including crater lakes as well as a startling variety of plant and animal life. Dwarf forests high atop Mount St. Catherine descend to the mundane rain forests of middle altitudes, which give way in turn to the dry forests of the lowlands. Those forests shift to mangrove at the coast, giving way to stunning white sand beaches, brilliant blue water, and exquisite coral reefs

ClimateAverage temperatures range from 24C/75F to 30C/87F, tempered by the steady and cooling trade winds. The lowest temperatures occur between November and

February. Because of Grenada's remarkable topography, the island also experiences climate changes according to altitude. The driest season is between January and May. Even during the rainy season, from June to December, it rarely

rains for more than an hour at a time and generally not every day.

PeopleGrenada's population numbers about 93,000, comprising citizens of African, East-

Indian, and European descent. The largest proportion of the population, about 75%, is of African descent.

Grenada is a rolling, mountainous island, covered with fragrant spice trees and rare tropical flowers. The capital, St. George's, is widely held to be the loveliest city in the Caribbean. Its horseshoe-shaped harbour is surrounded by a pastel rainbow of dockside warehouses and the red-tiled roofs of traditional shops and homes.

Grenada's physical beauty is complemented by its rich history and vibrant, living cultural heritage. Local festivals, fairs, and markets remain an integral part of life on Grenada. Its centuries-old spice plantations and rum distilleries still use traditional methods, emphasizing quality rather than quantity.

Nutmeg WholeThe nutmeg seed is encased in a mottled yellow, edible fruit, the

approximate size and shape of a small peach. The fruit splits in half to reveal a net-like, bright red covering over the seed. This is the aril which is collected, dried and sold as mace. Under the aril is a dark shiny nut-like pit, and inside that is the oval shaped seed which is the nutmeg. Nutmegs are usually sold without the mace or hard shell.

Nutmeg Oil Nutmeg oil is very good for arthritis, rub on joints

Cinnamon Bark Cinnamon comes in ‘quills’, strips of bark rolled one in another. The pale brown to tan bar strips are generally thin, used for baking, soups and mulled wines.

Cloves Whole cloves are often used to “stud” hams and pork, pushing the tapered end into the meat like a nail.

Mace GroundMace is the aril (the bright red, lacy covering) of the nutmeg seed

shell. Add to soups, beverages and cakes.

"JERK" CHICKEN WINGS

(Spicy Baked Chicken Wings)

For the marinade1 onion, chopped2/3 cup finely chopped scallion2 garlic cloves1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, crumbled1 1/2 teaspoons salt1 1/2 teaspoons ground allspice1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg1/2 teaspoon cinnamon1/4 cup minced pickled jalapeño pepper, or to taste (wear rubber gloves)1 teaspoon black pepper6 drops of peppers sauce, or to taste2 tablespoons soy sauce1/4 cup vegetable oil

18 chicken wings (about 3 1/4 pounds), the wing tips cut off and reserved for another use

Make the marinade:In a food processor or blender purée the onion, the scallion, the garlic, the thyme, the salt, the allspice, the nutmeg, the cinnamon, the jalapeño, the black pepper, the Tabasco, the soy sauce, and the oil.

In a large shallow dish arrange the wings in one layer and spoon the marinade over them, rubbing it in (wear rubber gloves). Let the wings marinate, covered and chilled, turning them once, for at least 1 hour or, preferably, overnight.

Arrange the wings in one layer on an oiled rack set over a foil-lined roasting pan, spoon the marinade over them, and bake the wings in the upper third of a preheated 450°F. oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until they are cooked through.

Serves 4 to 6.

3 cups waterOne 12-ounce can frozen pineapple juice concentrate, thawedOne 12-ounce can frozen orange juice concentrate, thawedpint passion fruit sorbet, melted1 1/4 cups white rum3/4 cup golden rum3 tablespoons fresh lime juice1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmegIn a large punch bowl or pitcher, combine the water with the sorbet, orange and pineapple juice concentrates,

white and golden rums, grenadine, lime juice and nutmeg. Fill 6 tall glasses with ice, pour in the punch and serve.
