letter from the ceo Dave Garlow
“To the families with loved ones who are committed to protecting these freedoms: Thank you for your sacrifice. ”
- Dave Garlow, President and CEO, Viega LLC
Since we recently celebrated the Independence
Day holiday, freedom is the perfect theme for this
issue of the Viega Voice.
Freedom is frequently associated with
fundamental freedoms like speech or religion that
we enjoy every
day. These, and
other fundamental
freedoms, form
the foundation of
American culture.
We often go through
our daily lives
without giving a lot
of thought to the
sacrifices made that
allow these freedoms, and our way of life, to endure.
All the while, we are reminded that this way of life to
which we are accustomed is very fragile.
National holidays like Independence Day,
Remembrance Day and Memorial Day are a time
to remember and recognize the people who have
made, and continue to make, sacrifices in the name
of freedom. Local and national law enforcement and
the men and women of our military go to work every
day to protect our country and the liberties that our
Founding Fathers envisioned. Independence Day,
in particular, is the time to remember the brave and
courageous efforts of our Founding Fathers, who
declared independence and forged a new culture
that embraces the liberties and freedoms that we
enjoy today.
To the families with loved ones who are
committed to protecting these freedoms: Thank
you for your sacrifice. To the men and women who
put their life on the line daily: Thank you for your
willingness to pay the ultimate price to protect people
you may never even meet. For those of us who
haven’t served, it is impossible to know exactly what
these sacrifices entail. But I can promise you that we
do know that your efforts and commitments allow us
a safe, free and remarkable way of life. Thank you for
all you do on our behalf.

letter fromthe coo Robert Boots
“Service is a part of who we are and why we exist.”
- Robert Boots, Executive Vice President and COO, Viega LLC
Service is one of the core values of Viega LLC. In
everything we do, we strive to help others. Be it an
internal or external customer, our goal is to take care
of the needs of those around us.
There’s something about helping people that
makes you stand out in a crowd. Those people who
go the extra mile, who climb out on a limb, who
put themselves out
there for someone
else are the heroes
in our world. Like
the members of
our armed forces!
Willingly they have
stepped up time and
time again to defend our freedom and the freedom
of the oppressed in other parts of the world. These
brave men and women, who have worries and cares
and families of their own, aren’t forced to stand up
for the rest of us. They do it because they are
dedicated to doing what's right and they have a
heart for service.
The hallmark of true greatness is a heart to serve
others. Maybe that sounds backward but history has
proven it over and over. Throughout the years, the
most successful people, the countries that thrive,
the greatest companies have been those who were
willing to set aside their own interests and help the
people around them.
That’s why service matters so much to Viega. We
don’t see service as a duty or an obligation. Service
is a part of who we are and why we exist. Viega’s
mindset is to help the industry, to improve working
conditions for installers, to simplify processes for
engineers, to provide innovative solutions that will
keep people safe. That means it’s not always a fast
answer and it’s rarely easy, but it is right.
To all the men and women who sacrifice so we
can be free, thank you, and to all of us who are free
because of them, let’s endeavor to deserve it. If you
want to be great, don’t forget how to serve others.

On May 6, 2014, the Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI), a
manufacturing-based trade association, announced the
Sun Valley Ski Resort as the 2013 Project of the Year for
the Building and Construction Division.
Sun Valley, a huge ski resort near Ketchum, ID, has
been called the American Shangri-La. Opened in 1936,
Sun Valley renovated their snow melting systems using
Viega ProRadiant systems, including ¾" ViegaPEX
Barrier tubing, Viega PEX Press fittings in ¾" and 2",
and 12-port copper manifolds.
Chris Share, HVAC Boiler Maintenance Supervisor at
Sun Valley, and his team installed around 30 miles
of tubing.
“We did the River Run Bridge in one day,” Share
said. “That was 37 loops in one day with six guys.
That’s a good amount. Every loop is exactly 400 foot
lengths. If three guys can lay 3,000 feet in a day, that’s
good. But with Viega systems, we laid 14,800 feet in a
day and it was a nasty day too.”
“Receiving this recognition from our partners in the
plastics pipe industry is a real honor,” said Christian
Geisthoff, Vice President of Market Innovation for Viega.
“The Sun Valley project is just a demonstration of how
innovation and teamwork can come together to benefit
our industry, making life and work better for everyone.”
The Sun Valley Viega ProRadiant installation
was one of three projects under consideration for
this prestigious award. Viega received a plaque in
recognition of the achievement.

Water quality, not a laughing matterDennis Harvey, Viega Technical Manager
Many conversations pertaining to water quality
begin with painfully funny stories of vacations past.
Have you heard stories that start like this:
• Remember that trip where I spent more time in
the resort bathroom than on the resort beach?
• Or, once I went on a trip where the “please
remain seated while the fasten-seatbelt sign is
on” simply wasn’t possible.
• Or, last year our spectacular backpacking
trip became a death march because that
pristine mountain stream couldn’t possibly
need filtration.
Any of those sound familiar? If so, you’ve probably
had some experiences with water quality that you
don’t want to repeat. But problems like those are only
problems when you’re in a third-world country or a
remote location, right? It’s not something you’d ever
have to worry about with the public water systems in
the United States. Or is it?
Water quality concerns in the United States
Waterborne pathogens such as Giardia, Norovirus,
Shigella, Legionella, Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium
and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa rank among the top
causes of outbreaks in public water systems in the
United States. And they’re not just limited to old,
rusty piping systems. Sources like pools and spas,
decorative fountains, dental equipment, cooling towers
and domestic water piping (on land and at sea) can
provide an ideal environment for breeding colonies
of pathogens.
This occurs when conditions are right to allow
levels of microbials to colonize on living and non-living
surfaces, resulting in a slime or biofilm that grows
through a combination of cell division and recruitment.
Once established, the biofilm nourishes and protects
the once-vulnerable microbe, which grows to
unacceptable levels and becomes difficult to eliminate.
How dangerous is Legionella?
Several of these pathogens are rarely fatal and
have maintained relatively consistent numbers of
reported outbreaks annually. However, one pathogen
in particular, Legionella, is creating quite a stir in
the industry.
The number of reported outbreaks of Legionella
(Legionellosis) has been on the rise (219% from 2000-
2009). With approximately a 10% mortality rate in
identified cases, Legionella has gained the attention of
media and industry professionals alike.
Legionella is responsible for a condition referred
to as Legionnaires’ disease, which was named in
July 1976 when an outbreak occurred among people
attending a convention of the American Legion at the
Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. Of the 182
reported cases, 29 people died.
1 4 v i e g a v o i c e J U L Y 2 0 1 4 w w w . v i e g a . u s
Legionnaires’ disease is dangerous because it
begins with symptoms similar to pneumonia but
it cannot be treated like pneumonia. Legionella is
particularly dangerous because even though it is a
waterborne pathogen, it infects people through their
respiratory system. You can drink water that is infected
with Legionella without consequences, but if you
breathe it in, there’s a high probability you may contract
Legionnaires’ disease.
A recent, well-known case of Legionella outbreak
is from August 2012 at the J.W. Marriott in Chicago.
Eight people contracted Legionnaires’ disease; two
people died.
What can be done to protect ourselves?
For more than a decade, measures have been
proposed to monitor, treat and prevent Legionellosis
(most notably ASHRAE 188P Titled: Prevention of
Legionellosis Associated with Building Water Systems).
Key factors to achieving prevention through design are
temperature and movement. Maintaining temperatures
outside the growing range inhibits cell division and
minimizing stagnation reduces the development
of biofilm.
Viega continues to work with industry experts
to identify origins, methods of disinfection, material
selection and, most importantly, critical measures to
reduce risk and limit liability through system design.
Over the past two years, Viega has been sharing its
commitment through hosting a series of educational
seminars and presentations in conjunction with the
development and introduction of innovative products to
meet the industry's growing needs.
As a solution provider, Viega is committed to our
customers and our industry. For more information,

How safe is your water? You can’t escape germs and pathogens. Every
environment on Earth is full of them. But just because
you eradicate germs completely doesn’t mean you
have to invite them into your plumbing systems.
Did you know you can reduce pathogens in
commercial plumbing systems through design? It’s
more than possible and Viega wants to show you how.
Viega and Tim Keane of Legionella Risk
Management are offering training courses on how to
maintain water quality and minimize microbial growth
in commercial plumbing systems. Don’t miss this
opportunity to learn about waterborne pathogens and
how to guard against them.
Course: Pathogen Risk Reduction by Design
• Case studies of Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks
• Legionella guidelines and standards from a
liability perspective
• Design factors that impact pathogen control
Tim Keane, a consultant with Legionella Risk
Management Inc., is one of the country’s leading
engineers in methods to control and minimize the risk
of Legionella.
With 25 years experience in industrial and
commercial water treatment consulting and 10 years
experience as a Project Engineering Manager, both
in new construction and facility operations, Keane
is uniquely qualified to speak on topics of pathogen
growth in plumbing systems.
Keane has worked with healthcare, commercial,
institutional, industrial and municipal facilities in the
U.S. and internationally, and he has been involved
in the following areas: new construction plumbing
design review, waterborne pathogen risk management
program development and implementation, plumbing
system risk assessments, outbreak investigations and
consulting on water treatment issues.
If you’re looking for a resource to answer your
questions about the dangers of waterborne pathogens

Trust the original, press the future
Viega was the first to introduce press technology for
copper to the plumbing industry, so it makes sense that
we’d be the first to introduce press fittings for PEX too.
With our reliable PEX Press fittings, our revolutionary
water distribution systems and our premium PEX
tubing, Viega is changing the way the industry thinks
about PEX systems.
With three installation methods, two material
types and one company to provide it all, count
on Viega to support you every step of the way.
Viega offers you choices like no other manufacturer
can, all backed by comprehensive 10-year
transferable warranties.
We control our PEX tubing from raw material to
finished product, so you can trust you’re getting the
best-quality products possible.
The most common installation method in the
industry, the branch and tee method, uses a main run
through a structure branching out to different fixtures.
Viega offers everything you need for this method but
we also offer an innovative choice, the Viega ManaBloc
system, a revolutionary homerun method that reduces
the potential for leaks and centralizes plumbing control
for easy maintenance.
James Hall, a licensed master plumber in Sarasota,
FL, appreciates Viega PEX systems because he can
run the tubing where it needs to go easily and quickly
without glue and without difficulty.
“We love the Viega ManaBloc system because there
are only two connections, one at the ManaBloc and
one at the fixture itself,” Hall said. “And that allows us
to offer a lifetime warranty on our install due to the fact
that there are no joints.”
With press fittings in high-performance polymer
and Zero Lead bronze, our own special alloy, you
can choose which material best suits your project.
ViegaPEX tubing carries the highest rating for chlorine
resistance and UV protection in the industry.
According to Hall, his team can repipe a two-bath
house in about six hours using the Viega ManaBloc
system. With other systems, it used to take them
two days.
With Viega's innovative spirit and our proven
heritage of excellence, you can trust us as you press
toward the future.
“We love the Viega ManaBloc system because there are only two connections, one at the ManaBloc and one at the fixture itself.”

I walked through a county courthouse square.
On a park bench, an old man was sitting there.
I said: “Your old flag pole is leaned a little bit
and that’s a ragged old flag you got hanging on it.”
He said: “I don’t like to brag,
but we’re kind of proud of that ragged old flag.”
You see, we got a little hole in that flag there
when Washington took it across the Delaware.
And it got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key
sat watching it, writing “Say Can You See.”
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville,
and she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg,
and the south wind blew hard on that ragged old flag.
On Flanders Field in World War I,
she got a big hole from a Bertha Gun.
She turned blood red in World War II.
She hung limp and low a time or two.
She was in Korea, Vietnam.
She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam.
And she’s getting threadbare, and she’s wearing thin,
but she’s in good shape for the shape she’s in.
‘Cause she’s been through the fire before
and I believe she can take a whole lot more.
So we raise her up every morning,
and we take her down slow every night.
We don’t let her touch the ground,
and we fold her up right.
On second thought,
I do like to brag.
‘Cause I’m mighty proud of that ragged old flag.

Liberty Utilities protects installers with Viega MegaPressG
Joining pipe can be a demanding task. Even with
proper equipment and training, traditional methods of
installation still run the risk of causing injury to installers,
experienced or not. Liberty Utilities of New Hampshire
wanted a way to keep their installers safe without
compromising the quality of their installations and that’s
why they decided to start using Viega MegaPress.
“We’re doing 500 in-to-outs and the biggest concern
was the wear and tear on the installers’ arms, trying to
save their bodies from the wrenching they’re doing,” said
Bob Mostone, Gas Service Department Supervisor for
Liberty Utilities. “Less mess and threading, that was the
stuff that caught my eye. It’s easier to fit things together,
especially since we’re changing out large volume meters
to rotary meters. Cutting out old flanges and installing
new ones is a lot easier too.”
Mostone, a licensed gasfitter since 1991, has worked
for the utility company for 29 years. When he first
experienced press fitting technology, his thought wasn’t
about time savings.
“I saw press technology,” Mostone said, “and I was
interested in the wear and tear on the servicemen in
the field.”
2 0 v i e g a v o i c e J U L Y 2 0 1 4 w w w . v i e g a . u s
Liberty Utilities will be installing Viega MegaPressG
fittings in sizes ¾" to 2" as they continue their work to
change out meters across their areas of service.
“The biggest thing we’re going to be using it for is
meter refitting, from the large old diaphragm meters to
new meters,” Mostone said. “We’re moving gas meters
from inside a dwelling to outside.”
Before experiencing Viega MegaPress,
Liberty Utilities installed piping systems using
traditional methods.
“We used corrugated stainless steel piping (CSSP),”
Mostone said, “but we stopped using it around 2009
and we’ve been cutting and threading since 2009.”
Then, when Liberty discovered the Viega MegaPress
system, they were immediately interested in switching.
“We are saving some time,” Mostone said. “We’re
not having to weld fittings. We’re cutting everything to
size and they’re just pressing it on. We can hang the
pipe and press everything at the end. But we were never
really looking to save time. Saving wear and tear on their
bodies was my biggest concern. With Viega MegaPress,
we have less soft-tissue injuries, which is Liberty’s big
concern this year.” According to Mostone, every
three months, Liberty’s Vice President of Operations &
Engineering chooses a safety category to focus on.
Last winter, the category was trips and falls. From this
spring to summer, Liberty is focusing on reducing
soft-tissue injuries.
“Viega MegaPress is helping us with that,” Mostone
said. “Cutting everything properly is a little different, but
as they’ve been using it and the more and more they use
it, the more they like it.”
Liberty Utilities worked with their local Viega
Technical Manager to ensure that Viega MegaPress
fittings would meet all codes and standards.
“We did a class with some of the pipers and the
codes and standards group and actually one of the local
gas inspectors,” Mostone said. “From that class we
voted to move forward to see if we could get it done. We
went through the process for our company to approve it.
We checked with the state fire marshal’s office and they
were fine with it.”
Liberty Utilities will continue installing the Viega
MegaPress system in commercial gas applications in its
service areas.
“It’s a cleaner job,” Mostone said. “You get the fitting
in without the environmental problems, no oil buckets or
oily products.”
Mostone pointed out that Viega MegaPress has
allowed Liberty Utilities to take a weakness in black iron
pipe joining and turn it into a strength.
“The breaking point of the pipe is always weakest
around the threads,” Mostone said. “The pipe wall
thickness from the thread breaks down. With threaded
pipe, it snaps at the fitting. That’s our strong point
now when you’re pressing them together with
Viega MegaPress.”
“Saving wear and tear on their bodies was my biggest concern. With Viega MegaPress, we have less soft-tissue injuries, which is Liberty’s big concern this year.”

Premium plumbing design for Canada apartment
The most common type of plumbing installation
for commercial buildings is a tried-and-true method
usually referred to in the industry as branch and tee,
or main and branch. This plumbing method utilizes a
main piping run through a structure that branches out
to different fixtures. But just because branch and tee is
the way people have always done it doesn’t make it the
best way.
Viega offers everything a plumber needs to install a
branch and tee system but what if there were a better
way to do it? What if you could install a plumbing
system with fewer fittings behind the wall, minimizing
potential leak points? With the revolutionary Viega
ManaBloc homerun system, you can.
David Mullins and Direct Mechanical Ltd. in
Fredericton, New Brunswick, were selected to install
the plumbing systems in a new 62-unit apartment
complex. But instead of the more-common branch-
and-tee method of plumbing, the building designers
wanted something better.
“They wanted the homerun system,” Mullins said.
“They wanted to be able to isolate each fixture from the
mechanical room.”
And that’s how Mullins and his team began installing
62 Viega ManaBlocs throughout this large-scale
commercial project, one Viega ManaBloc controlling
the water in each apartment unit in the building.
The ceilings in each unit were to be finished, so
the installers had to run the ViegaPEX tubing above
it. Viega PEX makes this type of installation possible
because it reduces the number of fittings behind a
wall—or, in this instance, above a ceiling.
The installation called for Viega ProPress copper
systems to provide the main water supply, which fed
into each unit’s individual water heaters and then into
the Viega ManaBlocs for distribution to the whole unit.
“We used Viega ProPress to get all the way through
the building and through the hallways,” Mullins said.
“The Viega ProPress was phenomenal. One guy ran 4"
pipe all the way through the parking garage, continued
up all six floors and through each wing in just under
four weeks. If he were soldering, he’d still be there. And
it didn’t matter to the press tool if we were doing ½" or
4". It was amazing.”
2 2 v i e g a v o i c e J U L Y 2 0 1 4 w w w . v i e g a . u s
But it wasn’t just Viega ProPress that impressed
Mullins and his team. The feature of the Viega
ManaBloc that stood out the most was that it came
pre-assembled. A common plumbing practice in
Canada is what Mullins called an Alberta tee, which
is a homemade manifold of copper tubing with
copper branches.
“With the Viega ManaBloc, we didn’t have to spend
the time with Alberta tees,” Mullins said. “For an Alberta
tee it takes probably 45 minutes to cut and build it and
make it look good. Then you’ve got to try to find a way
to mount it that looks professional. So you’ve probably
got a good hour per unit at least.”
Maybe one hour isn’t a lot of time, but multiply that
number by 62 apartment units.
“The Viega ManaBloc came pre-built,” Mullins
said. “And it comes with the mounting bracket. Stick
it on the wall and you’re done. For the price to build
a manifold and the material cost for fittings, Viega
ManaBloc just made sense.”
In total, Mullins and his crew installed around
24,000 feet of ½" red and blue ViegaPEX tubing in the
apartment complex.
“Basically, when we were doing the apartments,
all of the PEX was in the ceiling,” Mullins said, “so we
brought them all down into one room and connected
lines into the Viega ManaBloc. We didn’t have build up
any Alberta tees. It was nice and easy. And nobody’s
had any leaks.”
Direct Mechanical Ltd. didn’t start out using Viega
PEX solutions. Originally, their vendor approached them
with Viega as a plumbing system to consider.
“We were kind of skeptical because we were
already using a different manufacturer,” Mullins said.
“But the Viega folks claimed they were the best and we
tried it out. The amount of fittings and the availability of
fittings was a big sell. It was harder and harder to get
fittings from the people we were working with before.”
Mullins and his crew worked with an engineer who
was willing to let them use the Viega systems in this
building, which is something new for that particular
area and local commercial industry.
“They let us run with it and it worked out well
for us,” Mullins said. “Viega is a good product.
Definitely a time saver. No solder, no nothing. The
system was flawless.”

Historic chapel chooses Viega ProRadiant
Built in 1929, the historic Henry Mansfield Cannon
Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond Virginia
is a much-loved location for weddings and other
ceremonies, especially for current students and alums.
But with 20-foot-thick stone walls, the building can be
difficult to keep warm, even in the warmer months.
The University of Richmond selected Viega
ProRadiant heating systems, specifically Viega
assembled panels, ViegaPEX Barrier tubing and
stainless steel manifolds. Bruce Oglesby, Vice President
of Carroll Plumbing and Heating, Inc., acted as the
project manager for the chapel project.
Oglesby had never installed a Viega system before,
so when the University of Richmond’s architects and the
project engineers requested Viega ProRadiant, he wasn’t
sure what to expect.
“I liked the system quite a bit,” Oglesby said. “The
panels just snapped together the first time with no issue.
The way we were able to lay the system out in advance
before putting the tubing in made the design really easy.”
An example of Late Gothic Revival architecture
designed by architect Charles Morrison Robinson,
the Cannon Memorial Chapel has been nominated
as a historic site for the National Park Service.
The property also includes a memorial garden
and columbarium.
Oglesby and Carroll Plumbing and Heating, Inc.,
installed more than 6,000 feet of 5⁄16" ViegaPEX Barrier
tubing and 4,500 square feet of Viega panels in the
chapel’s main seating area.
“The connections to the manifolds were simple and
didn’t leak a drop,” Oglesby said. “I like that you can
see the flow on them and temperatures. It was pretty
impressive. A really great product.”
The installers put the Viega panels on top of the
plywood subfloor and, after walking the ViegaPEX
Barrier tubing into the panels, they put down wood and
tile over the top.
“We finished it in October,” Oglesby said. “The
installation on my part, as far as the manifolds and the
panels and the tubing, was four or five days. That’s
cutting some subfloor and making the panels fit.”

The Henry Mansfield Cannon Memorial Chapel
project finished at the end of last year, a successful
installation for a historic building that needed a more
efficient heating solution. But Viega isn’t the only
radiant solution provider in the industry. So how did the
university choose to install a Viega system solution?
The answer came down to a relationship. The Viega
district manager and radiant sales manager in the
region had done the groundwork beforehand to build
a relationship with the engineers and architects at the
University of Richmond.
The specification originally indicated another system
would be installed in the chapel, but as the project
progressed, the university decided that the relationship
they’d built with their Viega representatives would make
the difference.
That relationship became apparent to Oglesby as
he and his crew worked on the project.
“They were really pleasant and more than willing
to help,” Oglesby said. “That’s pretty important
when it comes to developing relationships. I’m used
to another product and they introduced me to theirs
and they were there throughout.”
Oglesby also got to work with Viega’s
design service.
“They worked with the layout and
actually one of the representatives
came to the job site and we
modified the floor plan a bit with
the engineers at the university,”
Oglesby said. “Every job isn’t
the same in the field as it is
on paper. The changes
were adapted
to make it even better than it was on paper.”
Oglesby had a great experience with Viega
systems and has already put a couple of bids in
on some other projects.
“I would recommend it, especially retrofitting with
the panels because they didn’t raise the floor like other
systems do,” Oglesby
said. “I loved it.”

Peterbilt saves serious install time with Viega MegaPress
When Daniel Brinkerhoff of D&S Piping in Salt Lake
City, UT, was asked to accept a black iron compressed
air line project on a job he was running the natural gas
lines for Jackson Group Peterbilt, he almost turned
the job down. The timeline was aggressive and D&S
Piping didn’t have the manpower to complete the job
on schedule.
“I was under serious time constraints because they
threw that job on me at the last minute,” Brinkerhoff
said, “and I was undermanned. The only way to
accomplish it was to try something new.”
That’s why Brinkerhoff, a gas line technician for
D&S Piping, decided to install Viega MegaPressG
fittings in a new 110,000-square-foot, full-service,
Peterbilt heavy-duty truck dealership. Five installers
ran approximately one mile of 2" black iron pipe for
compressed air to all the mechanic stations in
the building.
“We got the compressed air done in five days,”
Brinkerhoff said, “and if I had been threading, it would
have probably taken eight days. I was very happy with
the product. I didn’t have a single problem, not one
leak. And it saved me a lot of time—and my body.”
This was Brinkerhoff’s first experience with Viega
MegaPress systems, although he has installed Viega
ProRadiant and Viega ProPress systems in previous
projects. But Brinkerhoff first heard about Viega from a
television show.
“I heard about it the first time on ‘American
Chopper,’” Brinkerhoff said. “I used to watch that show
back in the day and that was the first time I’d ever seen
Viega fittings.”
In 2008, Viega commissioned a customized
chopper to be built on the television show. Since
then, the bike, which has become one of the most
popular Viega symbols, has toured North America

and Europe. The chopper is on display at the
Viega Manufacturing and Distribution Facility in
McPherson, KS.
“Then, later, I heard Viega was coming out to this
area,” Brinkerhoff said. “I was doing a radiant heating
system with a friend and he told me Viega was coming
out with a gas line fitting.”
Fast forward to 2013. Brinkerhoff and his crew
were able to finish their gas piping project on schedule,
thanks to Viega MegaPress, the only carbon steel press
fitting for gas applications.
“It went really well,” Brinkerhoff said. “The biggest
thing that was helpful is that I wasn’t concerned about
leaks. It went together fast. We got into a rhythm and
started cruising with it.”
The new facility serves as corporate headquarters
for the Jackson Group, which owns and operates
11 Peterbilt stores in the region. The dealership
houses a 36,000-square-foot service department,
a 25,000-square-foot parts department, an
18,000-square-foot body shop and an exclusive natural
gas service shop.
In February 2014, Peterbilt Motors Company named
Jackson Group Peterbilt in Salt Lake City its 2013
North American Dealer of the Year for its high levels of
customer satisfaction and exceptional growth in heavy-
and medium-duty truck sales, financing, leasing and
parts sales.
“The dealership’s outstanding performance is even
more impressive,” the company said, “as it moved
into a brand-new facility, one of the largest truck
dealerships in North America.”
Based in Denton, Texas, Peterbilt Motors Company
combines a global reputation for industry-leading
design, innovative engineering and fuel efficiency
solutions with superior quality to engineer a truck that
stands as the Class of the industry. Through its 260-
plus North American dealer locations, Peterbilt also
provides a comprehensive array of after-market support
programs to complement its full lineup of on-highway,
vocational and medium-duty products, including
alternative fuel vehicles. Customers enjoy industry-
leading service and support, including preventive
maintenance plans, expedited services, automated
parts inventory replenishment and 24/7 complimentary
customer assistance.
“If you’re doing a large project with large pipe
and you have to get it done quickly, it’s something to
consider because of the time savings,” Brinkerhoff
said. “Overall I’m pretty happy with the product. You
can’t ask for better results for the first try.”

Training makeswork easier
2 8 v i e g a v o i c e J U L Y 2 0 1 4 w w w . v i e g a . u s
Designed with state-of-the-art technology and
staffed by industry experts, Viega established our
Educational Facility in Nashua, NH, in 2006. Since
then, it has hosted more than 15,000 attendees from
all across North America. It also serves as the location
where all Viega sales team members receive their
training on Viega solutions. The Viega Educational
Facility is the best option for industry-focused training a
professional can get.
But what happens when you need to train an entire
maintenance crew? That’s what happened to Scott
Lipscomb, Building Manager at a well-known chain
of national museums. His entire maintenance crew,
composed of more than 150 people, wanted training
on Viega ProPress and Viega MegaPress systems. So
instead of making 150+ people come to Viega, Viega
came to them.
“The training was fabulous,” Lipscomb said. “Of the
150+ people who took the training, I didn’t hear a single
bad comment. Everyone learned at least one thing.”
Lipscomb and his technicians have installed Viega
ProPress systems in all of their
museum buildings, mainly for
maintenance and repair. Since
so many of the buildings they
work on are 300 or 400 years
old, much of the existing copper
is deteriorating. But even
though the technicians had seen
demonstrations of how to make
a press with Viega ProPress
and a power tool, they’d never
experienced an actual
training session.
“My director said to train our guys,” Lipscomb
said. “We just contacted local vendors and they
recommended contacting Viega.”
After contacting Viega directly, Lipscomb got in
touch with the district manager in their region,
who designed and set up an intense three-day
training session with Viega ProPress and Viega
MegaPress systems.
Lipscomb and all of the maintenance mechanics
learned about all Viega products, complete solutions
and individual pieces, as well as their applications.
Lipscomb appreciated the hands-on approach of the
training sessions.
“By being interactive, it made a world of difference,”
Lipscomb said. “Probably the interesting tidbit I learned
in the training was the measuring the fitting before you
make the press. If that fitting moves, even an eighth of
an inch, it makes a difference in how it seals. And that’s
something I never thought about.”
Lipscomb and his technicians appreciate Viega
ProPress because of its flameless installation. In general,
museums have many tight areas filled with artwork,
collectibles and historical artifacts, which makes it nearly
impossible to solder anything.
Lipscomb reports only positive feedback from the
training and he’s even seen some measurable results.
“The technicians are using it a lot more now,”
Lipscomb said. “I’m going through a lot more material.
I’m doing a lot fewer hot work permits and that makes
my life easier.”

You wouldn’t buy a car without considering the cost of gasoline. Why is a pipe fitting different?
Does a traditional solder system cost less than
Viega ProPress? That depends on what you call a
traditional solder system. If you’re just talking about
the fittings, yes, but pipe joining is more than fittings.
It’s pipe and flux and solder and labor and installation
time. Add all those up and your material costs will be
about the same as using Viega ProPress systems, but
you'll finish faster and save on your total job costs.
Don’t be afraid to put your pen to paper—or, in this
case, to use your computer’s number keys! Go visit

we built. Input what your solder system will cost you
and see how Viega ProPress compares. And if you still
have questions, put in your zip code and locate your
Viega district manager.
What Viega ProPress adds
Profitability – reduce your labor costs up to 60%
Peace of mind – Viega ProPress is guaranteed to

Biotech install saves time and stays clean
Clean piping installations are vital for biotechnology
and pharmaceutical projects, regardless of application.
In sterile environments, the smallest microbe can cause
irreparable damage. How much better is it to provide a
clean installation and save labor at the same time?
O’Keefe Plumbing & Heating in Danvers, MA, began
a 25,000-square-foot retrofitting project at one of the
world’s leading biotechnology companies and they
wanted to install Viega ProPress systems.
“I proposed the Viega ProPress system to the
facilities engineer and he agreed to it,” said Larry
O’Keefe, president of O’Keefe Plumbing & Heating.
“He was delighted with the results. We saved
thousands of dollars by using Viega ProPress.”
O’Keefe Plumbing & Heating specializes in projects
for the biotech/pharmaceutical industry and has been
this particular firm’s contractor of choice for 25 years.
They also handle commercial/industrial, hospital and
medical gases, process piping and specialized
waste applications.
On this project, O’Keefe ran pipe from a new
process chiller to a condenser water loop, which is
used to cool equipment such as autoclaves, glass
washing machines and steam generators. The biotech
firm typically runs nitrogen, compressed air, CO2,
oxygen and some mixed gases through its piping.
“The condenser water loop is located on the
top floor of a six-story building,” O’Keefe said. “We
installed 4" stainless steel pipe branching out to each
of the floors. We ran at least 1,500 feet of stainless pipe
up and down those six stories.”
Compared to brazing and grooving, Viega’s
ProPress stainless system provides more speed, safety
and reliability while enhancing the overall quality of
the installation.
“Given a choice between Viega ProPress or
grooving, there’s not even a question,” O’Keefe said.
“It’s Viega ProPress. I won’t groove any pipe that’s 4"
or less if I don’t have to.”
Viega ProPress systems, in either stainless or
copper, save time and labor on the job while making
clean, secure connections. Viega ProPress systems
also offer the patented Smart Connect feature,
which allows installers to easily identify unpressed
connections during pressure testing.
“I do believe Viega ProPress for stainless sets us
apart from other contractors,” O’Keefe said. “Viega
has a good product and we’ve had the opportunity
to introduce it in some biotech/ pharmaceutical
environments where others may not have had
that chance.”
“Given a choice between Viega ProPress or grooving, there’s not even a question. It's Viega ProPress. I won't groove any pipe that's 4" or less if I don't have to.”

Why would I purchase a radiant manifold with
balancing valves and flow meters?
When a heating system is designed, that system
is intended to deliver a certain amount of energy
or heating to a particular space (building, house,
room, etc.) in order to provide a positive level of
comfort. If the system is not properly balanced, the
precise amount of energy needed is potentially never
achieved. The rate at which heat is transferred through
will vary on its size, supply fluid temperatures and
flow rates. As the heating system begins operation,
it will look to achieve equilibrium both hydraulically
and thermally. Keep in mind, heating systems can
be properly designed and installed but, if balancing
is overlooked, the heating system will not meet the
expectations of the building inhabitants. Improperly
balanced heating systems do not provide efficient
comfort, which is the sole purpose for the added
cost to building construction. In addition, improperly
balanced systems can lead to other issues beyond
discomfort. To achieve the optimum comfort from your
heating system, proper balance is necessary.
Must every fitting in a potable water distribution
system be Zero Lead compliant or are there
exceptions to this requirement?
The Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act is an
amendment to the Safe Drinking Water Act. The
standard, which became federal law on Jan. 4, 2014,
states that any plumbing pipes, fittings or fixtures
that convey water intended to be used for human
consumption shall contain a weighted average of not
more than 0.25% lead. This means plumbing supplies
to fixtures such as toilets, shower valves and outside
faucets used for irrigation are exempt from the Zero
Lead requirements.
When designing a hygiene-conscious potable
water piping system, what criteria should
be observed?
It is important that rarely used extraction points
(fixtures) still benefit from regular water change or
flow. They should be situated in the system in such
a way that they still receive fresh water regularly.
This can be done by placing the extraction point in
a piping arrangement commonly known as a series.
Piping fixtures or extraction points in series allows
water to flow through each piping arrangement
when one fixture is activated, eliminating potential
stagnation. By reducing stagnation within the piping
system, you minimize the potential for microbial
growth. Some water pathogens can make humans
sick under certain circumstances. Proper disinfection
of a potable plumbing system alone may not
necessarily remove all microbial occurrences but
should be part of an overall approach.
Should I choose a conventional branch and tee
or manifold water distribution system for my
new home?
When designing potable water distribution systems
for any type of building, there are many factors to
take into consideration. Manifolds permit individual
valves to be located in a central location. In general,
manifolds provide hot water at a faster rate than a
branch-and-tee system. A manifold will provide a
more even distribution of pressure when multiple
fixtures are used simultaneously. In larger homes, it
may be beneficial to install remote manifolds that are
served by mains and branches. Either system will
deliver water to the fixtures in an acceptable fashion,
but you should weigh the pros and cons of each and
determine which characteristics are most important.
