    Task 01 - Stillness

Stillness is not the opposite of motion .Participants must first learn the functions ofexposure by using still cameras to capture aseries of moving shots.

Ideas+Experiment with the shutter, apeture and ISO(gain)relationship.+Use slow shutter speeds to get a ghostlike motion inthe camera.+Link a series of poses through still shots.

    The Frame

ASPECT RATIO - The proportional relationshipbetween the width and height of a frame. It isusually expressed as a ratio such as 4:3 or16:9. It is common to find the actualnumerical value of the high and widthrepresented for example 1920x1080. This meansthe frame are 1920 pixels in width and 1080pixels in height.

FRAME RATE or FRAMES PER SECOND - The amount ofindividual frames (or photos) that constitutea second of footage. The most common frame ratein Australia is 25fps which means there are25 frames per second of footage. If you are tocapture at 50 frames per second, it ispossible to playback at 25 frames per second, which slows the footage by half.

    Controlling Exposure

ISO, ASA or GAIN - This refersto the sensitivity of themedium that the footage iscaptured to. The higher thenumber, the more sensitive itis to light, however thehigher the number, the moreartificial information isbeing added. This reults in agrainy image with lessclarity. It is best to keepthe ISO as low as possible toretain a clear image.

SHUTTERSPEED - The length oftime that the cameras shutteris open. It is expressed asa portion of one second. e.g- 1/200= one two-hundredth ofa second or 2 = two seconds. The longer the shutter isopen, the more light it allowsthrough. Any movement duringthis time will result in bluras different amounts of lighttravel through the open shut-ter.

APETURE - The size of the holein the lens that the lighttravels through. Its is ex-pressed as a numer prefixed byan f. e.g - f2.8 f5.6 or f22.The lower the number, the big-ger the hole. The bigger thehole, the more light travelsthrough.
