StatementTrue or false?

(Start of Module)

True or false?(End of Module)

1Magnets can attract paper, plastic, iron, nickel and aluminium.

2All magnets have a magnetic field.

3All metals are magnetic.

4You can see a magnetic field.

5The Earth is a magnet.

6The strength of a magnet is the same all around it.

7A north pole will attract another north pole.

8A wire carrying a current has a magnetic field around it.

9 Electromagnets can easily be switched on or off.

Task

Complete the last column using T/F to indicate whether the

statement is true or false.

Use the space below each false statement to rewrite it at

the end of the module.

(Optional Task) Making a compass. If you have the following items at home, you are able to make a compass. Photos on the next page will help you.

Equipment – Magnet (Fridge magnet will work), small plate or dish, needle or paper clip that is magnetic (check by seeing if it attracts to your fridge magnet) and a piece of paper.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ADULT SUPERVISION BEFORE ATTEMPTING PRACTICAL TASK

Method.

1. Pour some water in the small plate.

2. Place a North and South on a piece of paper.

3. Stroke the paperclip with your fridge magnet but only in one direction.

4. Place the paper into the water.

5. Put the paperclip on top of the paper.

6. Compare against the compass on your phone.

Read through the information.

Section 3 – Advise Bear Grylls...

Bear Grylls has been stranded in an area he doesn’t know, all he knows is that if he heads North he will find a town. He doesn’t have a compass or his phone. All he has is the magnet inside his headphones, a hair pin that will be attracted to the magnet. He is by a still pond and under a tree with small leaves.

What would you advise Bear to do?

Section 7 - Trapped on a desert islandThe following five items need a magnet for them to work properly.

• Speakers

• Headphones

• Electrical Generator

• Mobile Phone

• Electric toothbrush.
