Video Analysis 1 : Alesso - YearsGenre elements Conventions presented in the Call The Shots

VideoPerformers/Characters – representations, stereotypes, behaviour, body language, specific pop stars

1 main character (Alesso) with lots of other sub-characters throughout the video as it gives an overview of Alesso’s rise to being a world famous DJ

Genre Type: Performance, Narrative or Conceptual? Are there elements of each? Describe them. If there is a narrative, what type of narrative is it? (Linear/Non Linear?)

The video has a clear linear narrative storyline. Just from watching the video once you can see that it is following the story of someone’s life and you know that it is linear because it is all in order( the start is at the start and the end is at the end etc.)

Iconography – props, symbolic codes

One of the 1st props on the video is the first keyboard that Alesso got when he was a kid, this is significant because it’s what he started his career with.

Setting- mise en scene The video is just set in his home country Sweden, in Stockholm.

Technical and audio codes – camera use, editing, lighting, diegetic/non diegetic sound, sfx

There is no non diegetic sound just diegetic sound of the actual music. There is use of very quick camera techniques when the camera moves very quickly so that you get the effect of being in a club when you watch the video

Neale’s ‘Mental Machinery’: How does the text meet audience expectations? How does it conform to convention and/or deviate from convention?

It does meet expectations because it does show scenes in clubs and at festivals, which are stereotypical features of dance music videos. Also it doesn’t meet expectations because it doesn’t show lots of this happening and it doesn’t show lots of alcohol or drugs being taken.

What ideologies are encoded in the music video? What does the pop genre seem to say about what it is like to live in the world, as represented in the video?

Page 2: Video 1 analysis

Ideology that is encoded in the music video is that it is hard to get to where you want to be but if you keep working at it then you will get there.
