MEDIA ETHICS TODAY BY BRENNA COLEMAN

SUMMARY

Brenna Coleman describes types of media that we have and she also describes the two systems of reporting, which are social responsibility theory of the press and the Libertarian model. The Libertarian theory is more popular in the West due to freedom of the press. Online media makes it possible for us to connect with our friends and family on the computer.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND ADVANTAGES

Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Skype and Instagram help make communication possible. Facebook , Twitter, and Instagram makes it possible to interact with friends and family online and see each other’s pictures and videos and Skype makes it able to see them and talk to them. With the help of these media the world is becoming easier and better for everybody.

This site teaches us that if we cannot wear a shirt that whatever we have posted or typed is inscribed on, then we should not post that online. It says that you should be able to wear a shirt inscribed with whatever you have posted.

DISADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Some disadvantages of the social media are as follows; (a) you will not have control over your pictures once they are posted and bad people could use those pictures to do whatever they want, also those people could identify you in real life. (b) You could makes friends with bad strangers who pretend to be someone they are not and these false identities could cause troubles which could be linked to you. (c) Some people could be rude to you online and there is no way to escape that kind of bullying.

VImposter Scams

Scammers may pose as people you know and trust, and then make desperate appeals for cash to deal with an emergency. Their goal is to trick you into sending money before you realize it’s a scam.

The Bait:You get a call, email, or text out of the blue from someone claiming to be a family member or friend who says he needs you to wire cash to help him out of a jam – to fix a car, get out of jail, pay a hospital bill, or leave a foreign country. But he wants you to keep his request a secret from other family members.

There might be a second person in on the scheme – someone who claims to be an authority figure, like a judge, lawyer, or police officer. These callers may claim that your friend won’t be allowed to leave the country unless you send money right away.

The Catch:It’s surprisingly easy for scammers to impersonate a trusted friend, family member, or organization. If you send money, it’s likely that you’ll get requests for more money.

If someone calls claiming to be a family member in trouble, check the story out with other people in your family. You also can ask the caller questions that a stranger couldn’t possibly answer.

WARNING

Also some bad people scam people online and these scams are becoming massive and it is important to be warned. The media though a good place for interaction and communication is also used by evil people as a way to hurt and do evil things.

TWITTER IN JOURNALISM

Jerry Lanson tells us that reporting a story correctly is better more important than getting a story right. Here is a very important quote from Jerry Lanson, “More than ever, news organizations need policies that emphasize the importance of being right, not just first. They need to remember that a reporter's first responsibility is to check things out—before  passing things along. They need guidelines on when to tweet, how to tweet and how to check the veracity of tweets.”
