December 2015.

During 23-24 September 2015, Australia was blessed by a visit of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba in the subtle body. To the delight of His Australian devotees, this was the second time Swami had chosen to visit Australia in His subtle body, the first being nine months ago, when Swami chose to spend New Year’s day with His Australian children. For that visit, Swami Himself chose the theme as, ‘Experiencing Love’. Swami told us that the next trip’s theme should be ‘Experiencing Bliss, as Love should lead to Bliss’.

With Swami’s guidance, a two day programme was organised in Murwillumbah, located in far north-eastern New South Wales (NSW). The first morning consisted of a divine discourse and a Q&A session, addressed to the organisers of the retreat, held at the Shangri-La, Swami’s residence in Australia.

The evening session was held at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre, where approximately 600 devotees had gathered, eagerly waiting for Bhagawan’s Darshan (sight of the Lord) and Sparshan (speech of the Lord). Swami was ushered into the Civic Centre with a welcome song and the official programme commenced with a traditional Aboriginal dance. Swami requested Mr. V Kumar, Mr. C Sreenivas and Mr. Narasimha Murthy to speak. A divine discourse and Q&A session followed and Arathi concluded the session.

The next morning, 24 September, Swami inaugurated a mobile medical van, after which Bhajans (de-votional singing in parise of God) sung by the Children of Australia and a multi-faith offering, signify-ing the oneness of all religions, were offered to Swami. Mr. Isaac Tigrett then addressed the devotees, followed by a divine discourse and Q&A session.

That afternoon, Swami granted a discourse to the youth before making His way to the Civic Cen-tre to commence the proceedings for the evening. The programme commenced with Gary Seaton, Swami’s host, summarising the service projects currently in place and those to come, all of which Swami has been guiding. This was followed by an enlightening speech by Sri Badri Srinivasan, a for-mer student of Swami, Bhajans and a Veena recital. Swami delivered His divine discourse and Arathi concluded the session and the trip to Australia.

This is a booklet containing divine discourses, Q&A sessions with Swami and excerpts from the speeches given by members of Swami’s entourage, including Mr. B. N. Narasimha Murthy, Mr. C. Sreenivas, Mr. Isaac Tigrett, & Mr. V Kumar.

Embodiments of Love!

Once upon a time, there was a sage by named Uddalaka. His son’s name was Shwetaketu. This is a story from the Upanishads. Just like any father, Uddalaka was anxious about educating his son. Uddalaka himself was a very learned scholar. He decided to send his son to another teacher. You see, when you personally try to teach your children something they don’t listen very well, but if you send them to the school and they get to learn the same things from a teacher, they are more attentive. They don’t value what they have right at home, but they give more respect and attention to what is said outside. Therefore, at times, even I have to tell all these people to talk to you, so that you understand better than when I speak.

So, the father sent his son for education to another Guru. After the few years that he spent with the Guru, the son, with his head swollen with pride and ego of having attained a lot of knowl-edge, came back to his father. His father, out of great joy at seeing his son, welcomed him inside his house, made him sit, served him water and food and asked him questions about what he had learned while he studied in the Gurukulam (a type of school, residential in nature, with pupils living near the guru). The son thought, “My father knows nothing. Had he known anything, why would he have sent me to another school, to another Guru? Today he is trying to question me and judge how much I know and whether I know more than him!”

In this way, the son started doubting his fa-ther’s intentions. His father asked, “Did you learn about the Vedas? Did you learn about the truths that are within the Vedas? Did you learn about our great history and culture? Did you learn about the principle of God?” As the father kept on questioning, the son, with tremendous arrogance, started explaining to him, “Oh yes, I have learned.” His father said, “Then tell me something about God, what have you learned about God?” The son said, “Oh, God is formless. He pervades the entire universe.

2

He cannot be described in words. He only has to be experienced...,” and he went on quoting from all the great scriptures about the nature of God; about the omniscience and omnipotence of God.

His father heard it all and understood that his son had learned nothing, for the one who is really wise does not need so many words to explain. It is the one who does not know that needs the help of many words. The father said, “Let me teach you something, let me tell you something.” He told him to get a pot full of water and then he took a few sugar crystals. The father said, “What is this?” and the son replied, “This is water.” The father asked, “And what is this?” and the son said, “This is sugar.” Now the father put the sugar crystals into the water pot, mixed it thoroughly, until you could no longer see sugar as separate crystals. Then the father asked, “Now where is sugar?” The son said, “The sugar is in the water.” The father said, “But I cannot see the sugar in the water, only water.” His son said, “Oh father, you know nothing. Take a drop of water and put it on your tongue and then you feel the sweetness and you will know that sugar is in the water.” His father said, “This is the same way that God exists in this universe. He is not visible as separate from the universe. He is a part of this whole universe, but you must experience God in this universe to understand Him.”

Many think that they can talk about God and understand him, they can discuss, conduct a confer-ence or seminar about Divinity, read books -- but all this is theoretical knowledge. It’s like describing how good the lunch is, what items are being served, who has made it, how it is made and all that -- but, at the end, if you haven’t eaten anything, your hunger will not be satisfied. Only by experiencing God will you truly know God. There is no other way of knowing Him. Until then, like the four blind men in the story, you can go on describing God just as they described an elephant; one, by touching its tail says, “It’s like a rope”, another, by touching its legs says, “It’s like a pillar”, another one touching its stomach says, “It’s like a wall” -- and they go on describing it in their own foolish ways. The one who has really seen an elephant will know what an elephant is. Likewise, the one who has truly seen God, understood and experienced God, will know who God is.

There are many ways in which you can understand and experience God, but this requires two things. One is Shraddha, a sincere desire, a sincere yearning, to attain God. The second is patience, that is, Saburi. This is what the first Sai Avatar (Incarnation of God in human form), Shirdi Baba taught. Two things, Shraddha, a sincere desire or yearning, and second is Saburi, that is, patience. With these two, one can attain God.

Many devotees come to Me and tell Me to grant them Self-Realisation; to give Self-Realisation with-out even knowing what it is! If you pass a high-voltage current through a low-voltage bulb, the bulb will shatter and will no longer shine. Unless you are ready, I cannot grant understanding or wisdom of God. In a pot that is not properly dried, if you pour water, it will develop cracks and will break into pieces. Likewise, to experience God, one needs to develop certain qualities.

First, it is important to have a sincere yearning to know God, to experience God. Secondly, you must have patience to let it happen when the time is right. The only purpose for which you are born is to attain Divinity; to understand your true nature. Whatever you do, say or think, if it helps you become closer to your true nature, then it is worth doing. Everything else is a waste of time. One may think that, by attaining great wealth, by making great relationships, or by becoming very famous, one is going to be closer to God -- but that is not true.

Only the one with a pure heart is close to God. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was a great Indian Guru. He was an Avatar Himself. He tried all kinds of penance for 12 long years to understand Divinity, but he failed. At the end, He cried like a child and approached the murthi (idol) of Kali, the Mother God-dess and said, “If You do not give Me Your Dharshan now, I’ll take the sword from Your hand and cut My head off.” When He cried this way, Kali immediately manifested and told Him, “Had You prayed to Me like this before, I would have manifested immediately. You wasted 12 years going round and round, it was unnecessary. A deep yearning to know God, to experience God is all I require.” At one point of time, when His disciple approached Him and said, “Ramakrishna Ji, can I also experience God and see Him like You?” Ramakrishna said, “Why not, it is very simple. Come, I will show you God” and He took him to a nearby well and told, “Look inside. God is inside this well.” When he bent over to look inside the well, Ramakrishna pushed him inside the well and the man started drowning and shouting, “You told me You would show me God, but it seems like You were planning to show me the God of Death instead!” He said, “The way you are crying now for your life, for the breath -- if you cry like this for God, then God will definitely manifest. Do you have this kind of sincere yearning to see and experience God? Only if you cry for God like a man cries for breath when he’s drowning, then alone can you have the vision of God.”

D i v i n e D i s c o u r s e - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

Talking about God, hearing about God, discussing God can give you some temporary joy, but that will last only as long as you are hearing or talking about Him, or discussing Him. The true joy, the everlasting joy, will come to you only if you start living in a way that is divine. Every thought, every word, every action should be soaked in Divinity. Everything that you do should become totally self-less, and that is the only way you will start living in Divinity and experience Divinity everywhere.

Why I am speaking to you about these things and not simply about mundane affairs, is because I consider you to be in My higher class -- you must learn higher things. Gone are the primary school days when you ran around playing and just engaged yourself in idle talk.

These are the days of high school, and as children who must promote themselves from primary to high school by making efforts, you must all put in a sincere effort to become closer to your divine na-ture. Shun everything that has a remote trace of selfishness in it. Only accept those thoughts, speak those words and do such deeds, that are absolutely selfless, that are done for the sake of God. Now, when I say all of these things, it sounds like music to your ears (laughter), but when you have to get down to actually doing it, then you come back with doubts. Therefore, as a small group of people from whom I expect more than the others waiting outside, I want you to ask your questions and clear any doubts that you have, because when you go out and talk about this with the others, the first thing they will do is, look at you and ask, whether you are truly following it or not. They will see you, and through you, they will come to know about Me. There is no other way that they will know Me. You must become true, living examples of Swami’s presence and Divinity. Therefore, if you have any questions, such as, how to lead such a life; is it possible to lead such a life; can this be practised in all circumstances and in all situations; if it would lead to any other difficulties in our day-to-day living; you should ask, because you may be haunted by many such questions once you start practicing. If you have any of these doubts, you can spend a few minutes clarifying them, so that when somebody else asks you, you are able to answer them correctly.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

Swami: Do you think it is possible to lead a selfless life every moment?

Devotee: One can try.

Swami: Kumar will explain how to lead a selfless life at every moment.

Kumar: Swami, it’s very difficult to lead a selfless life every moment, Swami. Selfishness is something which is so much part of life, right from the time we are going to school, Swami, when we are young. We are not taught selflessness at all in school, Swami, in the orientation and the training which the teachers give us. I did my schooling in Mumbai, and no teacher taught me any selflessness, Swami. It was very difficult until I came to Bhagawan, where I learnt the spelling of selflessness and what it really meant. So, selflessness in each and every moment of life, as we have learned from You, is some-thing that we need to practise each and every moment by thinking that, ‘No this is not mine, this is Bhagawan’s,’ and not just putting ourselves first; just thinking that, ‘This is Swami’s work and I’m just an instrument.’ Thinking that way each and every moment is the only way that we can practise, Swami. Swami: Kumar is good at marketing. He will go round and round and round (laughter). Is it possible to live a selfless life all the time?

Kumar: Yes, it is possible, Swami (laughter).

Swami: Yes, this is the right answer (laughter). It may be difficult or it may be easy, but it is possible. Think of when I told Narisimha Murthy and the others that we must go to Australia and talk to the devotees. Firstly, only if he knows that it is possible to go to Australia, will he make any effort to en-quire about tickets, to look at dates, to work out a travel plan. If he thinks it is not possible to go to Australia at all, why would he waste any of his efforts in preparing for the trip? First you must believe that it is possible to lead every moment of your life in a way that Swami wants, in a perfect, selfless way. Then, make the effort to figure out how to lead every moment in a selfless way. You did not learn to walk in one day; you did not learn to in just one day, to talk or sing or do whatever you’re doing today. You were not born with these skills, but you learned them.

As you practised walking, you fell a few times, and even hurt yourself, but then you rose again and continued walking, because you saw other children playing and running and you wanted to be like them, free and fast and happy. Therefore, despite all your failures, you got up again and again until you mastered the art of walking, running and playing.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

Despite several falls, you had to get up again and say, “I want to be like them. I do not want to be like the others, simply crawling despite having legs. I want to run, I want to play, I want to be enjoying ev-ery moment,” and then you would get up, again and again, despite several falls. In the same manner, first believe that it is possible to be God. Then you will put all the efforts that are needed to become That. If you start with the feeling that it is not possible, it is too difficult, it is not worth the time, then there is no way that you will ever try. If you put in a little effort, you will definitely get there.

There was a man with very bad habits. He was not able to give up his habits, despite several efforts. He met a guru who visited the village and he asked him, “How can I give up these bad habits?” “What is your bad habit?”, asked the guru. He said, “I take drugs everyday. That gives me a lot of pleasure, and if I don’t take them even for one day, I’m restless. This is the habit that I am not able to give up.” “What do you do?” asked the guru? He said, “I’m a teacher at a school.” The guru replied, “It is all the more necessary that you give up the habit, because you are in a very responsible position.“ “What can I do? I cannot just give up. I have tried many many times, but I have failed,” replied the man. Then the guru said, “Take this piece of chalk and use it daily in your classroom. Each day, take only so much of the drug as equal to the size of the chalk that is left after using it in the school.” So everyday, as he wrote on the blackboard, the chalk would diminish. Then he would measure the chalk and take only as much of the drug as the length of the chalk. Slowly, as the chalk size reduced over a period of time, his intake of the drug also reduced. At the end of it, the chalk totally disappeared and his habit also totally disappeared. If the guru had come and given him a philosophical speech about giving up his bad habits, and telling him that he must give the bad habit up there and then, then it probably would not have happened. He would not have attempted it, but by gradually putting it into practise, he was able to attain what he wanted to.

Start with one selfless act everyday. Start with one selfless act every hour, then every minute and then every moment. Start consciously, making an effort to become selfless. As you start enjoying being selfless, you will slowly become totally like Me. First, the child which is born does not want to eat any solid food, it only wants to drink milk, but by constant practise, the mother tells the child to eat solid food and, as it learns, it develops a taste for it. Eventually, it wants to eat solid food, and does not even want to drink the milk, which it loved so much. With practise, you can change your habits. As you change your habits, you can change your character, and then your destiny. You are all destined to become divine. If make the effort, you achieve earlier, if you do not, you will come slowly, but ultimately, all have to come. So know that there is no other way, there is no other purpose than to become Divine. The earlier that you make an effort, the more sincere your effort is, the better it is, the earlier you will be able to attain the state of bliss. First, say to yourself, “It is possible to become Divine, that is what I am.” Then make the effort to become That.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

What else?

Question: Swami, how do we become more and more selfless in our professions? Especially the commerce professions: lawyers, accountants, IT. How do we become more and more selfless so that we can lead a life of complete selflessness?

Swami: First, ask yourself what is the purpose of the job that you are doing? Is the purpose to acquire more wealth, to become richer, to create more comforts or to fill up your household with more valu-ables? What is the purpose of the very job that you are doing, whether it is commerce or anything else? If the purpose is only to feed your senses and crave for these outward pleasures, then you will never become selfless. If you do it for the sake of looking after yourself, your family, your relations and the people who depend on you, whether related or not, then it will become more selfless. The purpose is not just to look after yourself. The purpose is to help others who are in need, to share what you have with a few others.

However, the first step that you must take, is to take care whilst you are working, that you do it ac-cording to Dharma (righteous conduct). If something is not in accordance with Dharma, then there is no point in engaging in it. Both the means and the end are important. It is not enough if you earn something and share with others -- the way you have earned must also be pure. Many people tell Me, “Swami I need to do such a job, I need to earn so much money, it’s only then that I can look after my children, it’s only then that I can pay their school fees, it’s only then that I can make them comfort-able.” I told them the same thing which I am telling you today -- it is your desire to make them study in such a school, to drive them around in such a big car and to put them in such a big house. Because of your desire to do these things for them, which you think will give them permanent happiness, you engage yourselves in such jobs. Sometimes you even have to sacrifice the Dharmic way of doing things just for the sake of fulfilling these kinds of desires. Even with all these comforts, one may not be happy; but, even with little, if one is making an effort toward leading a life of purity, he and his family will be permanently happy. First know that.

Do not engage in activities or professions that are not Dharmic, that are not following the right codes of morality, because then, that impure money will not be of any use to anyone. To become selfless, the first thing you should do is, be on the right path. First, choose the work that you do in a way that keeps you always on the right path; that does not cause you to deviate from Dharma, because, later even if you come and cry, nobody can help you. You sat on the wrong train in the first place, and ob-viously if you don’t reach the destination, it is nobody else’s fault, it is yours.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

Tigrett was running a big hotel chain and he was doing it for many years. How many years? 17-18 years. Then he came to Me and said, “I want to offer all this to You.” I said, “I’m not going to accept this money from you, because this is not what I want from you. There has to be purity.” Then he went back and thought for a long time and repented and said, “Swami, this is all I had known, I did not know what else to do. I only knew this but, whatever I have done, please pardon me for my mistakes. Please accept it, make it Yours, make it pure. Use it the way You want.” It is only after he repented so much, that his money became purified and that is when I could accept it. Otherwise, it was not for the sake of earning money that he was doing it. He always wanted to help, but then there had to be purity. First, ensure that the work you are doing is pure, it is Dharmic. For the sake of a few extra coins, do not bargain with your conscience, do not negotiate on these things, do not compromise on righteousness. That is the first step and then, whatever you gain in the righteous way, use it not only for yourself, but for others too, by practising, ceiling on desires. Follow these two things: Get into the right job, do it in the Dharmic way, and then use it well for everyone’s sake by putting a ceiling on your own desires. You’ll be able to lead a happy, professional life.

Many rich people come to Swami with the same complaint, “My wife does not love me anymore, she wants to separate, she wants to take away the wealth that I earned with her. My children don’t listen to me, they don’t respect me.” All the money that they earn in the wrong manner does not help them at the end, to develop love and respect from their own children. What will you learn from all this? If you have done things in the right way, even with little, people would have been more loving and kind.

You must not think that you are leaders or organisers or important people; you are only servants. The first servant is God. He comes down as an Avatar to serve humanity and, if you join Him in service, you are the servant of the servant. Therefore, you should be more humble than others. Humility is the hallmark of greatness. You must do everything with great humility, then you are the servant of the servant.

When Hanuman was asked asked to identify himself, he said, “I am the servant of the servant”, that is how he introduced himself. “Rama Himself is servant of society; I am the servant of Rama. Therefore, I am the servant of the servant.” All are sevakas, that is, servants, not nayakas, that is, leaders. Remain humble, remain kind, be willing to serve, be willing to sacrifice. That is how you should be known to the world -- not as people who have authority or power, and whose head is filled with pride and ego. That is not the kind of people that I am looking for. It is very easy to be a servant, but very difficult to be a leader. By serving, you can lead better. Be humble, be kind.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

Question: Swami, lately I’ve become aware of the concept of self-reliance. When we want to develop our character and self-reliance, how does surrendering to God play a factor in this? I am confused. As much as we want to rely on Swami to help us with everything, does it enable us to become strong in character and develop self-reliance?

Swami: You must understand the meaning of the word ‘self’, which you’ve used. A bird sits on the branch of a tree and because of the breeze, the branch keeps swinging, but the bird is not worried about the branch. If a man is sitting on the branch, he will get tremendously worried because he knows that, if the branch breaks and falls, the man will fall too, but the bird is at peace sitting on the branch because it relies not on the branch, but on the strength of its wings. It can fly away in case there is danger. It depends on itself, it does not depend on the moving branch and therefore, it is not afraid, it is not worried. True self is the Divinity within you. It is the divine power that makes your heart beat, that makes you breathe every moment, that makes yours eyes see, your ears listen, and food digest. Everything happens by this divine power. If you depend on this divine power, know full well that things are not in your hands; it is all God who is doing everything through you. That is truly self-reliance. Depending or relying on your true self, which is God, is true self-reliance. Surrender comes into picture when you think something belongs to you and then you want to offer it to God. If nothing belongs to you -- it belongs to God in the very first place -- where is the question of sur-render? Surrender means that there are two, one is you, and one is God, but if everything belongs to God, everything exists because of God, there is nothing to give. Therefore, if you truly believe that God is the one who does everything through you, and truly depend on God, then there won’t be any sense of ego, there will be no sense of attachment to anything, there will be no sense of distinction or differentiation between things. You will know that the God that operates through you, is the same God that also operates through other people. All are puppets in the hands of God. God is the one who decides how each should play their part. If you have this deep sense of understanding of the nature of our lives and depend on God, who is really the true doer, although unseen, as the puppe-teer is unseen, you will develop true confidence, which is free from ego.

Confidence is not ego, confidence is the strength to take on any challenge without fear, knowing full well that God is with you. Over-confidence leads to ego. What is over-confidence? It is when you think that you are the doer, and that nothing can harm you and nobody can stop you. This kind of unwanted ego is over-confidence, but a person who is fully confident, self-confident, who depends on the Self will be always humble, will always be in peace. Therefore, there are no two things like sur-render and self-reliance. Self-reliance is itself surrender, because you are really depending on God and not on anyone else.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

Question: Swami, could You kindly share with us what Your vision is for us here in Australia? You’ve chosen Murwillumbah as being the centre of the spiritual activities here in Australia, and we know since Your first visit, at the end of last year and beginning of this year, there are a number of devotees who have decided to move from where they are currently living and working, into this area around Murwillumbah. Obviously, You have a mission for each one of those people who have made that choice under Your prompting. You mentioned last time that You were here, that we would not under-stand the magnificence of what is going to happen in this valley and the start of Your mission here, so could You kindly share with us a little bit more about that?

Swami: If, within a few months of My visit, so many people are migrating to Murwillumbah, you can imagine within a few years, that the whole of Australia will be here (laughter). No, it’s not a joke. It is the truth. When a flower blooms, the bees will find their way to it. Bees won’t want to come if they are artificial flowers. If the flower is real with the nectar inside, you don’t have to send invitations. The bees will find their way to partake nectar which is in the flower. This is just blooming now. This whole place will become a very big Sathya Sai Centre, an Ashram (a spiritual hermitage), as time progresses. I have begun by sowing the seed here, now it has grown into a small sapling with a few buds. In time, it will grow into a big tree full of flowers and fruits and, automatically, it will attract people to itself. Let it take its natural course. In the country of Australia this will become like a Sathya Sai Ashram in the times to come and, as Tigrett said, this is all preparation for the next Avatar, more than the pres-ent one.

In our Muddenahalli and Alike schools, children who pass from primary to high school need a little bit of coaching in order to pass the entrance exam. That is exactly what I am doing now -- I am train-ing you, so that you can pass the entrance exam when it begins, and then you can be there. The only condition is that you have to be selfless, you have to be full of love -- and as I said, if you don’t start practising from today, or rather from now, by doing one act, thinking one thought, by saying a word of selflessness on every occasion, you will not suddenly be able to pass the exam. You must practise on a daily, an hourly, a moment-to-moment basis, so that you are capable of passing the entrance test and coming to the presence of Divinity again. You will understand nothing if you haven’t done your homework. The teacher may be a great instructor but, if the students are not able to under-stand, it’s the fault of the students, for they have not done their homework. Practise now so that you can understand better. This is going to be a very beautiful Ashram, which will be used by Prema Sai during His visits around the world. Shirdi Sai was born, and lived in a small state. He did not travel out of the state. Sathya Sai was born in a state but travelled all around India. Prema Sai, though He is born in a state, will travel all around the world. That’s how this mission of love will expand, to encompass the whole world in its fold of love.

Swami (to a devotee): What stops you from being completely selfless?

Devotee: Ego, desire.

Swami: Not ego, not desire.

Devotee: Faith.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

In Australia, this will be the principal centre. That doesn’t mean that people from other states of Australia need to start feeling bad (laughter). It is just that, if all of you converge in one place, it will be better. In every country, there will be an Ashram of Swami’s that will be developed. In Australia, this and the place surrounding it, will become an Ashram where there will be seva (service) activi-ties, schools and a small hospital. There will be many other projects related to energy, water, social welfare, teaching, education and youth development. Multiple branches will develop once the tree starts growing. It will all happen in its own course but, more importantly, all of this will not happen unless and until you are ready. I am readying you to do all this. An Ashram is not buildings. An Ash-ram is not activities, it is the people who live in the Ashram who define it. Therefore, if you are pure, if you are selfless, the whole world, the whole of Australia will come here, attracted by your love and kindness.

A day will come when the whole world will be fed up with materialism. They will not be able to take any more, just like a child who, when he sees a cake, gets greedy and starts eating, but after some time, chokes and spits out the whole thing; it wants it no more. The world is coming to such a situa-tion. There are people who will become fed up with materialism, who will look for something higher. Then, guides like you must lead them on to the right path. That is your role. Unless you know the way, how can you lead others? A blind man cannot lead another blind man. Likewise, unless you are pure and selfless, how can you lead others to the path of purity and selflessness? Therefore, I am preparing you. An Ashram will serve as a place where all can come to share the love and to serve others. The true work of the Ashram is that each one of you will have to lead many more on to the noble path of love and kindness. That is what I am preparing you for. Unless you practise, you cannot preach. There is still time. There are five more years in which everybody should put in enough effort.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

Swami: Faith! The one who does not have complete faith in God can never be completely selfless. If you have complete faith in God, that He will look after everything, then you can become selfless, be-cause you know that whatever the situation may be, He will take care and you need not worry about yourself. You will truly depend on God. Narasimha Murthy, Sreenivas, Tigrett -- they have nothing on their own -- they are constantly working and serving others. They are not afraid of anything. It is because they have complete faith that I am in charge and, whether they see Me or not, they believe that I am around to look after them. If you develop that kind of unwavering faith, you will be com-pletely selfless. Develop such faith. This is enough.

Arathi was offered to Swami.

Swami: Look at this camphor. It has melted away. Like that, the ego and all your attachments should melt away. You should offer it to God.

As a student in Parthi, I enjoyed Swami’s love and proximity and witnessed many miracles. I saw Swa-mi revive many people from death. When I was five, I was admitted to the hospital with high typhoid fever. Despite rolling me between ice blocks, the doctors said I would not survive. Around 11pm, my parents started praying to Bhagawan. It was raining heavily and suddenly, an orange light entered the room through the window. Within seconds, we all saw Swami standing in flesh and blood. He ordered the nurse to remove me from between the ice blocks, carried me in His hands, and placed me on the table. He materialised amritham (nectar) and poured it into my mouth. He created vibhuthi and ap-plied it to my forehead. Then, He reassured my parents I would be okay and gave everyone padana-maskar, including the nurse! Soon, the orange light disappeared. This was Bhagawan’s Subtle Form appearing to me when I was 5 years old.

Then, there was the time my mother fell ill at Puttaparthi and was hospitalised. As her condition wors-ened, the doctors declared her no more. Swami arrived and asked them, “What happened?” They said, “She is dead.” Swami took a spoonful of water from a glass and started pouring it into my mother’s mouth. What happens when water is fed into a dead body? The water flows out. He did it twice and the water flowed out, but the third time, everyone heard it being gulped down. Swami created vib-huthi and applied it on her forehead and legs. Then He called one of the doctors and made him put his finger under mother’s nose to see if she was breathing. The doctor was surprised and said, “This is truly a miracle!” Swami replied, “Where science ends, Divinity begins.”

The third incident occurred last year, before Bhagawan’s Birthday. I contracted dengue fever and prayed to Swami for help. Swami sent word, “Nothing will happen. You will come to Muddenahalli and give a talk on the 23rd.” The doctors, however, told me to start contacting blood donors because my platelet count was decreasing rapidly. After 2 days, my platelet count spiralled down. Finally, Swami sent me a chocolate with instructions to eat it. Once I ate it, all of a sudden, my platelet count took a u-turn and started going up! Within a few days, I returned home and, on the 23rd morning, Swami asked me to give a talk at Muddenahalli, and I did! His prediction came true.

For many years, I was right next to Bhagawan; I could touch Him, feel Him, talk to Him, and sing for Him. But I did not realise that Swami is within me, which I never experienced when I was in Parthi. This is a beautiful chance Swami has given me and all of us. The first experience was theory; the sec-ond experience, now, is practice.

The scourge of our times is poverty, which is lack of money – the necessary wherewithal to eke out a basic form of existence in daily life. However, poverty can assume several forms: poverty of thought, of goodness, of brotherhood amongst men and women, etc. Poverty, lack of opportunity, and lack of love are the bane of the times that we are living in, all over the world.

Love converts the problem of poverty into a supreme opportunity for goodness and meaning in life, and this is the game Swami is playing. He brings meaning to us, to address these issues. For example, through the super speciality hospital we have built in Raipur. It addresses poverty through love and service and is a temple of healing, love, and service, embodying the great Spirit of Love which will drive the world.

When Swami chooses to use us as instruments, we should be aware that mysterious, mystical, and amazing things are waiting to happen in our lives. We should not become an obstacle to ourselves. Once we allow ourselves to become the Lord’s instrument, a mystical and wondrous journey is wait-ing to happen, and so much meaning is going to come into our existence.

Being chosen to do the Lord’s work is not a small thing. We wait, we pine, we tire, we hunger, we clamour, we anguish, and we cry, to be chosen. Finally, when a Divine Being, in His mercy, says we are chosen, is it not a blessing? Would we want to lose this? This is our defining moment. The power of love to address this scourge of our times, is what is going to drive humanity in times to come.

The need of our times is so much and time is so short. There is so much waiting to be done, in so little a time, so how much of intensity do we wish to pack into the moment? How much do we wish to do which will make us a better person in the process? Which will make us rediscover ourselves in the process? Which will suddenly make us grow into a being far more supreme than we did imagine? That is the journey hereon. Swami is hard at work and we surely have been chosen to be a part of that work.

It is said that God has no beginning and no end. All Divine Masters have a beginning at a certain point of time in the history of the world, but they never have an end. Whether Rama, Krishna, Bud-dha, Jesus Christ, or Ramakrishna Paramahamsa – all were born, but never died. They live on as the love songs which rejuvenate the spirit of mankind. So it is with Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Bhagawan and all Divine Masters always live on, because they emerge from one source. They all represent various facets of the same God, who comes in various forms. However, all the Divine Mas-ters, who came to the world in a physical form and disappeared, live on spiritually in Subtle Forms. Recently, an Argentinian devotee wrote me, “I believe in the Subtle Form of Bhagawan Baba because there is a saintly lady in my town who sees the Subtle Form of Jesus Christ and communicates His messages.”

Of all the Divine Masters who came physically, disappeared physically and continued spiritually, there are only two that returned immediately after the physical exit to revive the spirits of their devotees and disciples. The first is Jesus Christ, who lived on Earth for 40 days after His crucifixion. The other is Bhagawan Baba. Once, I was speaking about this and announced that Swami came back after dropping His physical body. Swami corrected me, “I never went to come back.” It was so true of Jesus Christ, also.

Bhagawan has said, “When I was in the physical form, it was a drama. Now, I am in the Subtle Form; this is also a drama. The truth is, I am in the heart of every one. Seek Me and you will find Me.” He is the resident of our hearts; ultimately, that is where we are going to find Him. God is always there, ev-erywhere, but He chooses to speak only at sometimes, and this is one such time. We can listen to the authentic voice of God, who pervades every atom in the universe and here He is going to speak to us.

The Roman agent who judged Jesus to be crucified asked Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said, “I have come to bear testimony to truth.” “What is truth?” he asked Him. Jesus said, “Those who abide in My word are truly My disciples. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.”

The truth these Divine Masters have been teaching is the same thing Bhagawan Baba is going to tell us today: Shed ignorance; shed the false assumption that we are the body. We are just to know that we are God. Swami tells us there are only two simple things we need to practise to know that we are Divine: Selfless love and selfless service.

Embodiments of the divine Atma!

What you think exists, in really does not. What you think does not exist, is the one reality. Like bub-bles which emerge from water and merge into water, all of you, all beings, they emerge from God and merge back into God. As long as the bubbles exist, the many colourful reflections that appear on the bubble, also exist -- but when the bubbles are still floating on water, you may think, ‘That is the truth,’ when looking at the reflections on the bubbles, you may say that, they are real. When the bubble merges back into water, the reflections that you see on the bubble, also disappear. Similarly, all the things that you see in your lives, are like those reflections on the bubble. All of you, when you are filled with body consciousness, you continue to make many efforts in order to realize the mirage like reflections that you see in your lives. You struggle to attain the worldly pleasures, the sensual pleasures, you get subjected to duality, and naturally you will get subjected to all kinds of adversi-ties, miseries and sorrows. Its a big mistake on our part to think that this illusory world is truth. In this same way, as the bubbles disappears, all the reflections disappear. Once the body consciousness disappears, all these reflections, all things that you see in your lives disappear.

From birth to death, in the journey of life, you have so many experiences. You keep developing all kinds of re-lationships, ‘This is my father, this is my mother, this is my husband, this is my wife,’ and you get entangled with many such relationships -- but these relationships last only as long as your body lasts.

Once the body is lost, everything that you achieved through the body will also be lost. When the great emperor Alexander, who had conquered many regions, finally arrived in India, he was surprised to see a man immersed in deep sleep under a tree. He asked himself, “This man who looks like a pau-per, who does not have anything, is enjoying such sound sleep and, in-spite of all my wealth, I never enjoyed such sleep. I have many treasures and mansions. I have all the comforts and luxuries, but I could still never sleep so soundly.” He very arrogantly sent one of his soldiers to get the person who was sleeping under the tree -- but that man said, “No matter who is calling for me, I am not coming. If he wants to meet me, let him come to me, I am not going to meet him. Who does he think he is? He maybe the emperor of many countries, but I am an independent person. I am not under the control of any king. Therefore, if he wants to meet me, he has to come to me, I am not going to come to him.” Alexander was very angry and said, “If he is not going to come here, I will have him beheaded”. Then that man replied, “If I am beheaded, I will be happier. Because of this body and body-consciousness, I am suffering so much and he would be relieving me of all suffering by beheading me.” Alexander was most astonished to hear that, got down from his horse and walked towards the gentleman. Alexander asked him, “Where do you get all this courage from? With all my power and possessions, I am living in constant fear. I am not able to sleep peacefully -- even a little sound will wake me up because I am always afraid that my enemies will come and kill me”. Then the man said, “Because of body-consciousness, you are not able to sleep peacefully and that is why you are full of fear. When you were born, you were not born along with these kingdoms. When you die and leave this world, these kingdoms are not going to follow you. Actually, pursuing things which you were not born with and which will not last permanently, is a weakness, not a strength. Because you are struggling to attain more and more kingdoms, you are becoming more and more subjected to these sufferings. Because you entered the path of pursuing and conquering many kingdoms, you have also earned many enemies. The body is like a bubble on water. Today it is there, tomorrow it is not there.

D i v i n e D i s c o u r s e - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

“As long as you have bodies, it appears that the whole world exists. Once the body is lost, the whole world is also lost. It is your foolishness thinking that the winning of kingdoms is permanent, and struggling for this, is also a kind of foolishness. If you can give up all these foolish attempts, you will be happy.” Alexander realised that here was an extraordinary person and that because he knew the truth that he was not the body and he was Divine, he had so much courage. You have nothing with you when you come into this world. You come only with limbs -- arms and legs, and you go back with only arms and legs. You go back with empty hands. That is why Alexander, just before his death, told his people, “Cover up my whole body and take it in a procession with my empty hands raised. Then people will realise that, when I leave with empty hands, though I was an emperor, nothing lasts.” You didn’t bring anything with you when you were born, there was not a scrap of clothing on your body. Finally, you are going to lose the body. Therefore, thinking that body is permanent, and working and struggling to attain the pleasures and comforts of the body, is a mistake. The body is a water bubble, mind is like a mad monkey -- do not follow the body, do not follow the mind, follow your heart. It is also a mistake to depend upon, to base your lives on, the mind. Mind is nothing but a bundle of thoughts, a bundle of desires. The mind takes form from our own desires. Because of our desires, the mind grows stronger. A cloth becomes a cloth because of the vertical and horizontal threads; in the same way, the mind gains strength because of the many thoughts and desires that emerge within you. If you want a white cloth, you need white threads. If you want a red cloth, you need red threads. If you want a black cloth, you need black threads. The colour of the cloth depends on the colour of the threads. With black threads, you get a black cloth. With red threads you get a red cloth.

The mind will have different forms when it has different desires and thoughts. When you have sacred and pure thoughts, your mind will also become pure and sacred. It is the mind which is the cause for your bondage, and also your liberation. If you base your life on the body, you will be under the control of your sensual pleasures. When the mind becomes enmeshed with the body, you think that the body is permanent and for the sake of the body you struggle so much. When you turn the mind from the body towards the Atma, the Divine, then you know that you are Divine. You can recognise the Atma only when you utilise the mind properly. There is a very subtle relationship between your mind and your desires. The mind can bring you both bondage or liberation. All this depends on the kind of desires which are there in your minds.

In earlier times, if people wanted to catch hold of forest monkeys, they would do it using many tricks and their cunningness. A monkey is not going to come to you if you call it. First you should under-stand it’s nature and then catch it. A monkey is very greedy for food. A monkey is not satisfied with enough; it wants more and more food. In earlier times, when they wanted to catch a monkey, they would get a jar or a pot with a very narrow mouth and fill it up with many kinds of eatables. That is how they would catch the monkey. A monkey would put its hand to catch hold of the eatables and would remove it. When the fist was full of food, it would not able to take out its hand, because of the narrow mouth of the pot.

T h e M e d i ca l Va n

20

D i v i n e D i s c o u r s e - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

If the monkey were to pick up one morsel after another, it could eat very happily. Because it wants to take away all the eatables together, it would not able to pull its hand out of the jar. That is why it would be caught. If you want liberation, you have to utilise just what is required for you and not be greedy to attain everything that you seek.

It is not right to ridicule the body either, nor to worship it. You have to utilise the body to the extent required, turn your mind towards the Atma and realize the Atma; that is the right way. The body is also very much needed. It is like a car. If someone wanted to reach this place from their house, they would came in a car. You can utilise the body as a vehicle in your journey of life. Only when the vehicle is good, can you have a successful journey. If the vehicle is spoilt then you can’t undertake any journey. You need to look after the body well and look after its health. A vehicle is required only untill you reach your destination. Similarly, this body is required only untill you know your Divinity. The body is the basis for all noble activity in life. This body is given to you to serve others. When you utilise the body to serve everybody, the body will find fulfillment of its purpose. Filling the mind with sacred thoughts and love for God, then utilising the body is the right way. The mind is like the driver. The driver has to obey the master and take him where he wants to go. When you want to come here, and the driver says, I want to go to the market, that is not the right thing. The master will tell him, “You are not the master, you are the driver, you take me where I want to go. You know how to drive the car and your job is to take me to my destination following all the traffic rules.” Your job is to look after the body and utilise it well. Follow the command of the master; the master is the heart, the body is the vehicle, the mind is the driver, and the heart is the master. The mind should drive as per the command of the master and take him to the right destination, then we can say that the mind is the good driver. A bad driver will lead you into an accident, and will never lead you to your true destination. In contrast, a good driver who looks after the car and drives well will take you to your destination.

The mind should listen to all the commands of the heart and utilise the body in the service of others; that is the ultimate goal of life. ‘Heart’ means the divine principle in man. On one side, we see the physical heart which is constantly pumping, but here, when we say heart, we refer to the Atma. It is a big mistake to cut open the heart and look for the Atma there. That is the physical heart -- the gross heart. For every gross heart there is a subtle heart. That subtle heart is the divine principle. That is selfless love. That is the Atma. Only when you listen to the commands of the heart, which is nothing but the Atmic principle, will you reach the right destination. That is selflessness; selfless love. What-ever you think, whatever you feel, whatever you speak, whatever you do, when you do everything selflessly, then you are entitled to think that you are on the right path. Therefore, it is unwise to base your life on the body and confine life to that. You need to have the vision of the Lord, who is never born and who will never die, and attempt to realise Him. When Sai Baba was in the physical frame, all of you thought that Sai Baba was a physical body. The physical body, which is made up of five ele-ments, will last in accordance with the laws of time, place and circumstances. It is impossible for that body to last for an unlimited time.

D i v i n e D i s c o u r s e - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

Maybe I have lost the physical body, but I am the Atma, still here. I am the One and I have become many in the universe. That is why the Vedic scriptures describe God as the One with a thousand heads, a thousand hands, a thousand eyes and a thousand ears. How did God get these thousand ears? Where will He get a thousand Hands? In reality, He does not have a thousand heads, but there is a more subtle, inner significance to what these scriptures say. God is One who is there within every being as the Atmic principle. Everyone is the embodiment of God. For this reason, I keep address-ing everyone of you as ‘Embodiments of Divine Atma’. Because I am not body conscious, I only look at your love, your compassion and the Atmic principle and therefore, I address you that way. Any divine incarnation who comes into the world has to lose the physical body -- what is impermanent cannot be permanent. Why is it that even after the divine masters, the divine incarnations have lost their physical bodies, they continue to be worshiped? It is because of the love that they showered on mankind and the sacrifices they made for mankind, that you keep worshiping them even now. When Krishna lived on the earth, He had more enemies than friends and when Rama was here, there were also many enemies. When Jesus was here, I need not describe what people did to Him. When divine incarnations come, only a very small number of people recognise them. Those people who identify themselves with the bodies think that, by destroying the bodies of the divine masters, you can destroy them. Jesus may have been killed, but not the divine principle of Jesus. Today, all over the world, people worship Jesus. Why? Because of the sacrifices made by His devotees. Today, the world recognises and respects Jesus because of the devotees who have built so many centres to serve mankind, such as educational institutions and hospitals, as well as providing valuable service with sincerity. When He was living physically on earth, less than 200 people were around Him, but today, in the world, a majority of the people are Christians; followers of Christ. Because of the sacri-fices made by the devotees and the service rendered by the devotees, the world recognises them. If His followers and disciples are like this, then how great must the master have been? Therefore, if you want to propagate the principles of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, first and foremost, fill your lives with selfess love and render selfless service. When you have firm faith that Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is still here and He will look after you and safeguard you, you will be able to undertake such activities. You do not need to worry about Me, or lament Me. You have to lead selfless lives. You have to live with the courage to love everyone and serve everyone; then you will be truly propagating the principles of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

Not just accepting or taking -- you have to keep giving. Give love. Love lives by giving and forgiving; self lives by getting and forgetting. Dont be selfish. Be loving. Be selfless. I came here in order to tell you all this. I have not gone anywhere -- as long as this world lasts, God will always be here. God is the object and the world is the reflection. For as long as the reflection lasts, you should understand that the object must also be there, for there cannot be a reflection without an object. You may not see the object but, if the reflection is there, you should conclude that the object is there. When you see a bubble, you should know that there is water underneath it, because the bubble depends on water. In the same way, this world depends on God.

This world emerges from God, is sustained by God, and finally merges in God. Therefore, base your lives not on the temporary world, but on the permanent God. When you fill your lives with selfless love and render selfless service, then you will be bringing the principle of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba to the world. When you follow the Atmic principle, this is possible. Only when you follow the heart principle is it possible. It is only once you have experienced selfless love and know the bliss which is concealed within selfless love, that your mind will definitely not follow worldly things. When you experience divine bliss, you will forget worldly happiness. You have to struggle to attain divine bliss.

If you have any questions to ask, you can ask them. You can also do so tomorrow; some today, some tomorrow.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

Question: Could You please define what forgiveness is, and how we can achieve it?

Swami: Oneness is forgiveness. When your right hand hurts your eye, you don’t punish your right hand. You forgive the right hand because you know that this hand also belongs to you, just as your eye does. When you think that both belong to you then, obviously there is no question of you punishing or for-giving. In fact, with the same hand, you put ointment on the eye, apply a medicine or a balm, and help it recover. It is only when you know that all are One, that all are part of the same principle, that you are not different from each other, that you will truly forgive. When you truly love, you truly forgive, when you truly feel all are One, then you will forgive. That is why I say, “Love lives by giving and forgiving,” because love knows that all are One. If your tongue is bitten by the teeth, you still know that it is an accident, not intentional. When you know that both teeth and tongue belong to you, you don’t pull out your teeth. In the same way, if you truly love, and you feel everybody is One with you, then you will forgive very easily. In fact, there is no question of forgiving, for you know that it happened because of ignorance or by accident.

Question: How should I know if what I have done is right or not?

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

Swami: Everybody must ask this question. Only then will you know whether you should correct yourself or not. If you think that you are always right, then who can teach you or correct you? Look -- it is raining outside, but it also rained a while ago. Now, when you go out of this hall, you may not know whether it has rained or not -- you may not have seen it raining, but when you see the soil and the wetness of the soil, it will be clear to you that rain has fallen. In the same way, if you do the right thing, immediately peace will descend; your mind will be put to rest and your heart will be filled with a sense of peace. You will know that this peace is nothing but the result of knowing that what you have done is right. If you experience this peace and joy, know that what you have done is right. If you do not experience this peace, but you are experiencing confusion, then you should know that what you have done is not right. There is no other definition. Your heart will tell you whether it is right or not. Selflessness is always right. If you have to choose between your desire and the benefit of many, choose the benefit of many -- that will be the right choice. If you have a choice to abstain from talk-ing harshly, from saying things that would hurt people, from doing things that would not be in the interest of many, then abstain from it. Even if it costs you, it will be less painful to let it go than to suffer later for having done something wrong but, more importantly, there are two things that you must consider while doing anything; paschaat tapa or remorse, is feeling guilty after you have done a thing and realised that it is wrong -- then you try to change it but, since the time has gone, the op-portunity is gone and it is very difficult to put right the damage. Poorva tapa means that you think of the consequences of what you are going to do, before you do something and whether it is going to benefit everybody. Is it honest? is it just or righteous? You must ask these questions before you do anything. Thinking before you do something is more important -- there is no point in thinking after you have already done it.

In the Bhagawad Gita, when Arjuna was about to fight the battle, in which his own kith and kin would be killed, he was full of remorse. He told Krishna, “I do not want to fight this battle because I can foresee the consequences” and, for that reason was feeling sad. In the same way, sometimes, you have to operate upon a limb that is diseased, and very dangerous to the whole body, so you have to cut it off. Likewise, these bad people must go and therefore, Krishna told Arjuna, “Fight with the sense of duty of Kshatriya, that is the warrior clan, that you belong to.” Arjuna’s duty was to remove the ego so what he choose to do was the right choice -- but Arjuna did a lot of thinking before he decided to fight the battle. It is right to think before you act. There is little benefit in thinking after the event. Therefore, think before you do anything, whether what you are doing is the truth; whether what you are going to do will help many, or is just for your selfishness. Finally, is what you are going to do going to please Swami or displease Him? If you ask these questions, and then act accordingly, you will always be able to do the right thing. A state of peace will always prevail in your mind. The proof that you have done the right thing is that you will always be peaceful. Go and reflect upon all the incidents that have happened in your lives; analyse for yourself and discover, when have you have felt absolutely peaceful? Then think about the decisions that you had taken at that time, believ-ing them in your heart to be the correct choice.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

Question: I have a burning question within my heart. It is said that ignorance and identification with the body and mind are the causes of suffering. How do we dispel this ignorance and how do we achieve or realise the truth? Is self-inquiry the direct path? Is dhyana or meditation the way to go? Kindly enlighten us and give us the grace to achieve realisation. Jai Sai Ram.

Swami: There may be many roads to reach a particular destination; one may choose to go the right road and reach the destination or one may choose to take the left road and may finally reach the same destination. Reaching the destination is important, but the path that you take depends on what you are aware of. Dhyana, that is meditation on your true Self, is one path. Through that form of yoga, by constantly remembering God, and whatever you constantly fill your attention with, is what you will become. Another practice is namasmarana (chanting God’s name) - that, too, will engage your mind in constant remembrance of God. Yet another practice is keertana, that is, sitting together and singing the glory of God. Likewise, there are nine methods that you can practise to reach God. However, considering that you all are working and that you have many other responsibilities to take care of, you definitely can’t run away to the forest or up a mountain to meditate on Me full-time. It is not possible, for your hands should be in society and your head in the forest. If you permanently go to the forest and try to meditate on Me all the time, then you will not be able to fulfill your duties towards your families, towards your relations, and towards this world, where you belong right now. Therefore, the easiest path -- as I have always said -- is the path of love and service. If you think that all belong to God; all are your brothers; that everyone is a part of you -- in this way, you would come to love everyone and it would not stop at love, it would immediately transform into service. For, love cannot wait to serve; so it will immediately transform into service. Service will remove ego and, when your ego goes, then all the darkness that is covering the flame will disappear and the flame inside the lamp will shine forth. The easiest path for anybody who is engaged in this world, with so many duties, is to try and love everyone without expectation and to serve everyone at the very first opportunity that you get. That continuously reduces your ego and the identification with your own body; instead you will start identifying yourself with everyone. From individual, that is, the ‘I’ feeling, you will grow into the ‘we’ feeling, that is, all are One. From the, ‘we’ feeling, you will grow into the ‘He’ feeling; that is, the same God who pervades in everyone. That is the easiest path, for if a piece of cloth is dirty, you use a small amount of soap and water to wash it and make it clean. In the same way, body attachment is like the soot that covers the flame. It can be washed away with a small amount of the soap of service and the water of love. The path of love and service is the best way to get rid of your ego and attachments very quickly. Whatever you do in this world, you do it for the sake of your body, for your own benefit, for your own comfort and pleasures. If, for a moment, you start thinking about other people’s comforts, pleasures and happiness, you are already getting rid of your body consciousness. Not only that, it is the practical approach to spirituality. Thinking that God is in every-one is theory -- the practice of that is to serve God in everyone. With this practical approach, you will get the experience.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

No matter how much you describe the variety of food that is going to be served for dinner, it is not going to fill your stomach and save you from the pangs of hunger -- only if you eat it, will you be happy. In the same way, just remembering God is not going to give you permanent peace and joy -- but along with that, you must serve God by serving everyone. As I have said, “He has a thousand heads, a thousand hands, a thousand feet,” and this means He belongs to everyone; He is in every-one. By serving everyone, you will be able to serve God, and that is the fastest, surest and shortest path to reach Me. In Mr. Gary’s house, we see there is a main door. From My room, if I have to use the main door, it will take a hundred steps -- but what did Gary do? He converted the window in the room into a door, so that I can walk out very quickly, in the shortest way. In the same way, the short way to reach Me is to serve everyone as much as you can.

Question: If we are surrounded with people who are going through a lot of physical pain, and we are doing our best to serve them, what more can we do?

Swami: God will give bigger challenges to people whom He thinks can handle the bigger challeng-es. Anyone can do very small things, even a child would be able to do them. However, as you grow up, the complexity of your examinations will grow. Therefore, if you want to be promoted and reach higher levels, you must pass tougher tests. You serving somebody and them serving you is a very easy test. When you serve somebody, but they don’t serve you, is a little more difficult test. When you serve somebody and they harm you, that is still more difficult. So do not give up -- think that God trusts you; that you can definitely do better than before. As a result, He makes your challenges harder, because He knows that you are capable of achieving them. With God by your side, nothing is impossible. It might be impossible for you alone, but for God, nothing is impossible. The Pandavas could not have won the battle of Kurukshetra with just the five of them and a handful of soldiers. It was Krishna’s presence that made all the difference. Think, ‘Swami is with me in every situation,’ con-sult Swami, who is in your heart, and don’t be in a hurry to simply follow the dictates of your restless mind. Then you will definitely find a way to win over the hearts of people. The greater the challenges, the more exciting the journey. When you look back at your life, you will be happy that you were able to do the right things and could transform so many people. When a river flows, it does not discrimi-nate -- it flows freely for everybody, whether they wash their dirty clothes in it or, they drink water from it. Whether it is an animal, a beast, a bird, a saint or a criminal, it does not discriminate. It goes on flowing, because its nature is to flow. Your nature is to love. Whether somebody loves you or does not love you, should not matter to you. How many of you drink from a river and thank the river for giving you the water? Very few -- but river does not mind, it knows that, only if it flows, can it reach the ocean; if it stops flowing, to discriminate and differentiate and to analyse, it will not be able to reach the ocean. Flow like a river -- selflessly. The more people demand, the more you must love -- your love is inexhaustible, because the source of love is God, which is inexhaustible. Have faith that God is trusting you with greater challenges because He knows that you can become better and take up every challenge. Life is a challenge, meet it.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

Question: Thank You so much Swami for Your divine wisdom. I have a question about forgiveness. The times when, maybe, I have done something wrong, I can be very hard on myself. Considering that we are bound to fall sometimes, could You please advise on how to forgive and love ourselves on the journey?

Swami: This is also very important. Forgiving others, is, clearly easier, but forgiving oneself is far more difficult. You see, as a child in primary school, you may have made some silly mistakes; you may not have been able to add up two and two to make four because you were just learning. As a result, you might have got bad marks in the primary school because you did not do your arithmetic properly. After growing up, if you looked back to your primary school days and are unable to forgive yourself for not being able to add two and two to make four, isn’t it foolishness? At that time, in those circumstances, in such situations, it could happen -- and yes, if it was a mistake, so be it. Now you have grown and you know that you have made mistakes, owing to the time, place and circumstances that were prevailing then. You can’t call yourself a fool now, because you made a mistake in your pri-mary school. You can’t go on condemning yourself for that one mistake which you made sometime ago. You are able to do many more things now according to your age and your education. What has happened in the past, due to the situations and circumstances prevailing then, cannot define your entire life. I always say, “Past is past, forget the past.” If you know that you have made a mistake, you now have an opportunity to correct it and avoid making it again. Many people don’t even know that they are making a mistake, and go on living blissfully in ignorance. It is as if you get on the wrong bus and nod off, and don’t realise where you are going -- you are just happy that the bus is moving but, ultimately, you end up in the wrong place and it’s too late to go back. At least you have realised that you are on the wrong bus, that you were not awake, you step off, take the right bus and move on with your journey. What is lost cannot be recovered, but you still have so much more which can be saved. Look at what you have, not what you have lost. Past is past, forget the past. Present is om-nipresent, whatever you do now will define your future. Therefore, know that God loves you all and, like a loving Mother and Father, He will forgive you if you truly repent from your heart. When God is ready to forgive you, why should you not forgive yourself? Thank God for reminding you now that you made a mistake and letting you know that you can correct it and not repeat it again -- seek God’s help and move on. You are no different from God. These are things that you only learn as you grow. A mistake is not a mistake, if it is not repeated. Therefore, you should simply forgive yourself for hav-ing done wrong. Don’t brood over the past; you cannot look backwards and walk forwards. You have to look forward and walk forward. Therefore, forget about the past as long as you have learned your lesson, forgive everyone and yourself and continue to move forward; that is the right way. Who in this hall has never made a mistake? Who has been perfect from day one? No one; everybody learned and moved forward. Don’t dwell on negativity. Negativity is very dangerous. If it grabs you, it will suck away all your energy and enthusiasm and render you very weak. Therefore, dwell on positive thoughts, such as, ‘I am God.’ Thinking that you are a human being is a mistake -- think that you are God, you are Divine, and live accordingly and your mistakes won’t be repeated.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

Question: Bhagawan, could You please tell us something about Prema Sai and His divine incarna-tion and if we will have the opportunity to be with Him in the same way that we have had the op-portunity to be with You.

Swami: In Muddenahalli, we have primary schools, a high school, a pre-university, and a college. I always see the children in the pre-university college worried. When I ask them why they are always worried, they say, “I don’t know if I will be able to become a doctor, an engineer, or a lawyer, or what I will do after this.” They are, all the time, worried about what is going to happen next. I tell them, “Do your duty now correctly and you will automatically go to the higher classes. If you don’t do your duty now, there is no point in worrying about the future, because you will not achieve anything.”

In the same way, I have come here to prepare you for the advent of Prema Sai. If you want to go to university, you must have completed your high school education well -- if you have just been think-ing about university instead of doing your work in high school, you will not be able to understand anything in the university. Prema Sai will come very soon, but it does not really matter if you are not there in His presence. To become a part of His mission and be in His presence, you must earn His grace. That grace will come to you if you become full of love. Prema Sai Himself is love; prema means love. If you fill your heart with love, you will automatically be attracted towards Him. He will draw you from wherever and whichever corner of the world you are in, just as a magnet attracts a piece of wire to itself -- but if the iron is full of rust and dust, it cannot be attracted. If you give up the rust and dust of ego and selfishness, you will automatically be drawn towards Him. I tell you that, as you go higher, your lessons become harder. Therefore, if you want to enjoy His presence and proximity, you must come prepared, otherwise, it won’t make any sense to you. It would be like a primary school student sitting in on a university lecture -- you would understand nothing. People will go mad and say they don’t understand anything this Avatar is teaching, and they will leave because they cannot understand Him. There will be a test at every step. To pass the test, develop love. Make the best use of what time you have now -- that will automatically ensure the future. We will have one more question and close for today, as we will have a further opportunity tomorrow.

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 3 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

Question: Thank You Swami for saving me from a major illness last year. I am from Fiji and I under-stand that You are also going to Fiji soon. Why is it so difficult for us Fijian people to do anything there? There are so many opportunities for service and people are very loving and kind and, yet, just to get a simple sound system, we have to do major fund-raising. This is not allowed by the Sai Or-ganisation and it is so difficult to do anything in the Sai Centres. Why are so many people migrating, Swami?

Swami: Who can stop anyone who wants to do anything selflessly? Nobody should have expec-tations -- you must analyse very carefully, where you have gone wrong and why the work is not progressing. I have always said that, a selfless act is so powerful that no force in the universe can stop it. Only if it has a trace of selfishness, can it be stopped. Somewhere, a desire for a little name, recognition, or appreciation -- even that, if it enters the thought for an act of selflessness, it renders it inadequate to achieve success. Therefore, analyse carefully and you will find the reason why it is so. Somewhere, there has been selfishness. It has not been completely selfless and that is why it has not happened.

This is the main reason, not only in Fiji, but anywhere. Ask here Mr. Gary here, is it easy to do selfless things? It is difficult. Take the first step and then stand firm, and things will happen. When Sreenivas went to Raipur, it was a barren land and I told him within a year there had to be hospital there. He didn’t belong to Raipur, he didn’t know their language; he had never been there, but he said that, whatever it would take, every single day, he would remain in Raipur and not go back to Bangalore untill he had finished. Someone who has always lived in Bangalore, went all the way to Raipur, with-out any support, without anyone help, and started working all by himself Looking at his selfless enthusiasm, more and more people joined. You see, to pull a train, you need an engine. If you can be-come the engine, the train will definitely move but everybody wants to be the carriage and nobody wants to the engine. The engine needs to work harder than the others -- if one person takes it upon himself, you will definitely be able to achieve success. If everybody looks at the other to achieve it, the train will move nowhere. The one who has to lead must sacrifice -- that is the only way. The world will follow later.

(The programme concluded with the bhajan, ‘Prema muditha mana se kaho’, followed by Arathi and distribution of prasadam.)

Swami blessed the youth, in His first visit to Australia, with the opportunity to serve by setting up a medical/dental unit which would start to serve the Toogolawa School. Initially, the work was concen-trated around setting up a health unit at the school, until Swami provided further guidance in May 2015 regarding a mobile medical clinic. Swami stated that He would bless the clinic in His September 2015 visit.

The youth promptly started researching and sourcing a caravan and equipment. A few days before His Australia visit, a caravan was sourced and fitted with dental equipment. The caravan was decorat-ed and ready to receive the Lord’s blessings. Swami arrived on the morning of 24th September, 2015.

He cut the ribbon and entered the caravan, where two of the dentists explained the details of the dental process and equipment. On a few occasions, Swami commented that He was very happy with the work. He blessed the project and distributed chocolates to all of us. Then, as we were trying to guide Him out through the other door, He turned and went back to see the X-ray unit. The beauty of His unpredictability! He blessed one of the youth to look after the medical van and talked about selfless service. As He left, He asked others to have a look.

Later, in His discourse, Swami talked about the medical van and how He would like it to go around serving the children and setting an example of selfless service.

Last year, during Dasara, Swami invited His alumni from the class of 2009; 100 of them and their fami-lies. He gave them interviews from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. They were coming out, crying, carrying on and smiling – so happy! It brought me great joy to watch Him do this. He gave a discourse and said, “The problem with the world is selfishness. In the Kali Yuga, people are so self-involved that they cannot understand or love each other.” He continued, “These boys, every single one them, whom I raised, wanted something or the other from Me. Not one of them asked, ‘Swami, what can I do for You?’

This part of Swami’s mission is an amazing opportunity for all of us to help Him. What can you do for Him? Love All, Serve All. You represent Him, the Indweller. You can learn to have a continuing narra-tive with the divine. One particular birthday, Swami asked me to swing His jhoola (swing). I soon lost consciousness, and ever since then, there is a jhoola swinging in my heart. He is always there, wait-ing to speak to me. He will answer any question, and He will do it for you. Swami has said, “The first answer you get is always Me,” because the mind changes everything. You don’t have to be a yogi or a physic. He’ll tell you what to do and how to do it.

Swami gave me a jewel many years ago and said it represents the balance between male and fe-male, heart and mind. This is so important to understand because you have both aspects. The male aspect is like a computer – always analysing, segregating, and making up stories. The female part is the heart. It’s for compassion, mercy, forgiveness and that’s where the Indweller speaks from. When you balance the heart and the mind, you can channel Divinity and you will find peace of mind; from that balance comes the ability to Love All and Serve All. Love and service, that’s what He is asking all of us to remember and to do.

We’ve been travelling for two years and Swami has announced the development of six or seven ashrams, including one here in Australia and big plans to expand. He has also ordained a number of hospitals and schools. He says all that He is doing now is for the advent of Prema Sai.

Embodiments of divine love, devotees and children!

I was very happy listening to the songs of the little children. They have given great delight to every-one by singing the songs with the feeling of love in their tender hearts. Today’s children will become tomorrow’s young men and young women. Later, the same young men and young women will be-come men and women, and will be able to do something for mankind which is badly needed today. If today, we bring up our children -- we raise them in the right way -- we are going to solve all the problems of the world, tomorrow. The minds of children are very tender. Whatever we teach, they learn well and then they will be ready to do what is required of them for society. That is why I have been saying time and again, that, in our schools and colleges and in our hospitals, we need to do what is required for children. Today, if you look after your children well, they are going to look after you later -- but, because of the impact of modern life, many parents do not look after their children properly. In order to give all kinds of comforts, facilities and luxuries to their children, both father and mother are in employment to earn money. I have always told you that, it is not money which is important -- it is morality which is important. Money comes and goes, morality comes and grows. Today’s parents, in order to escape from their responsibilities, leave their children with babysitters and then admit them to nursery schools. When you grow up, these children will put you into old- age homes, and escape from their responsibilities. Whatever you do, will come back to you as a reaction. The whole world is nothing but reflection, reaction and resound -- whatever you do today will have consequences tomorrow. Today, if you look after your children with love, when you become old, they will look after you with love.

How do you teach children? It is not only through talks and songs. They will learn from your own behaviour and the actions you undertake in your lives. In one home, a husband and wife were hav-ing their food and even the husband’s mother, who was quite old, was also eating food at the same dining table. The old lady, because her hands were trembling, due to physical weakness, spilled the food that she had taken in her hand, and spoiled the table. The daughter-in-law became very angry, and said, “You are dirtying the dining table which I have kept so clean. Therefore, from now on you cannot eat at the same table. I will arrange another table for you in your own room and you can eat on your own.” She got a small dining table for the mother-in-law, put it in her room and only gave her food there. The grandson was observing how his grandmother was being looked after. After some time, it so happened that the grandmother passed away in old age.

D i v i n e D i s c o u r s e - 2 4 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

The daughter-in-law wanted to sell the furniture in her mother-in-law’s room, that is, the dining table and chair, and get new furniture for her son -- but the son said, “You may sell anything else, but please don’t sell the table and chair.” The daughter-in-law asked her son, “What are you going to do with this old table and chair? We are going to get a new set of furniture for you.” Then her son replied, “It is not for me, it is for you. When you get old, you have to eat your food all alone in your room, so I will save this table and chair for you.” Then she realised the truth; she realised the fact that her son would look after her in the same way she had looked after her elders. As you sow, so you reap. If you sow a mango seed and expect to get an apple, it is never going to happen. If you look after your children with love, they will look after you with love when you get old.

The most important duty of parents is to bring up their children well. If, between the mother and father, the children receive love and affection, they will also learn the same thing. Just because chil-dren are born to you, through you, you think that those children are there to live only for your family. This is not correct. Every man is a limb of society. Society is a limb of the nation. The nation is a limb of the world. This world is a limb of creation and finally, creation is a limb of God. Therefore, if you don’t bring up children well today, tomorrow, society will be lost, the nation will be lost, the world will be lost, and the whole of creation will be lost. Therefore, bringing up children well is not only the responsibility of parents; it is also the responsibility of society, because man is part of society. If man is good, society is good. Man cannot live all alone in society, nobody can do that; and when every-body works as a team, this is community, this is society. Therefore, the fundamental unit of society is man. That is how society can be moulded through an individual, the nation through societies and the world through nations. For the whole society to be happy and the nation to be happy, requires some kind of sacrifice on the part of individuals. Where there is no sacrifice, there cannot be love, patience, or sympathy. Because of selfishness and self-interest, nobody wants to make sacrifices for others. Everyone is leading their lives in a very narrow-minded way and they don’t develop broad-mindedness. Even the children observe that their father and mother do not make sacrifices for each other.

The father and mother both come from the office and the children are alone at home. The father will ask the mother, “I have laboured very hard at office, just get me a cup of coffee.” The mother says, “I have also come from office, so you go and prepare the coffee yourself; and also get a cup of coffee for me”. Then the father says, “I am the husband and you have to listen to me.” The wife responds, “What do you mean by saying that you are the husband? Both of us are working hard for the sake of the family, therefore, you can do it.” The minds of the children are damaged when they see this kind of bickering between their father and mother -- yet it would be so simple for the husband and wife to take turns to make coffee for each other.

If the father and mother behave with patience and mutual affection, the same thing will be learned by the children. Children are never bad -- there are no bad children, there are only bad parents and bad teachers. Because of the parents and teachers, children grow up the same way. When there are good parents, when there are good schools and good teachers, only then will children develop in the right way. If parents send their children to school and think that their responsibilities are over, that is not right. Only if parents join with teachers in moulding their children, will the children develop.

We are running a school here. A school is not just a building. Even if you don’t have a good building, but you have a good teacher, you will provide a good education to the children. Therefore, I have been directing people here that we should also start a teacher-training institute. When you think of teacher-training, it is not only about particular subjects, knowledge or skills. Who is a good teacher? A good teacher is one who behaves well; only those who practises good principles and teaches them to children. Only those men and women who have unity in thought, word and deed will become good teachers -- and we want such teachers, who are one in thought, word and deed; we don’t want teachers who say onething and do another -- such teachers set a bad example for the children. If the teachers tell lies in front of the children, the children also will do same thing later. I tell you, if teach-ers act in right way, the children will also learn the right ways. Therefore, I want all the devotees in Australia to get together, form a teacher-training institute, create good teachers and send them to every part of society. Wherever you go, good teachers are very essential.

Wherever we start schools in Australia, we should send good teachers there. This is what Australian devotees should do. I am very delighted that young men and women here have developed the programme of having a mobile clinic. With the mobile clinic, the young men and women should go to the villages and serve the needy people. Young men and women in the villages will look at these selfless young men and women, and learn those values themselves. Not only will they see and learn, they will learn and do the same themselves. When you go to villages, the young men and women there in the villages will join you in service. Thus, one person can change many people. If you light one lamp, through that lamp you can light many lamps -- you don’t require matches to light every lamp. You have to light just one lamp, that is all. What is this lamp? It is the lamp of love. The body is like a lamp; love is the oil and the wick is our mind. The light of wisdom is lit by the flame of service. Your task is to think that your body is a lamp and develop love, which is the oil, immerse your mind in this oil of love, and light the lamp of wisdom through service. That is what you have to do and when you light the lamp of love, wherever you go, the lamp will shine. Today, in this Kali Age, everybody says that it is full of darkness, that this is some kind of dark age. Where is darkness? It is not outside. The darkness of selfishness and self-interest are the root cause of darkness outside. In the darkness you don’t see that you are hurting yourself and, as a result, you keep hurting everybody. Because you can’t see all things in the right light, you are subjected to all kinds of dangers.

When you light the lamp of love, in that light you can see that everybody belongs to you, and you will be able to love them more and more. The world is nothing but your own reflection. If you look at your own reflection in many mirrors, you will be very happy to see it. If you smile and laugh, the reflection also laughs. If you cry, the reflection also cries. The world around you is nothing but your own reflection. You love, then others will love you. You serve others, others will serve you. You should not hurt anyone. This body is given to you in order to help others. The essence of the 18 Puranas composed by Sage Vyasa can be summarised in these two sentences: first, merit is nothing but help-ing others and second, sin is nothing but hurting others. Narasimha Murthy said that Jesus explained the truth in just two sentences, in a simple way, whereas Narasimha Murthy gave his explanation in many sentences! I am telling you in a much simpler -- ‘Love all, serve all’. There is nothing higher than this truth. If you can love everyone, you can serve everyone; thus, love becomes service by itself. Love will not keep silent when looking at the difficulties of others. Love will immediately attempt to relieve people of their suffering.

Many people ask Me the question, “Swami, when You were in the body, You set up many projects and You are doing the same now. Why do You do that?” It is because I don’t think that only the people of India are My people. I feel that all people of all nations are Mine, therefore, I want to love every-one and serve everyone. Just thinking that you want to serve others, is not enough. Just making an attempt is not enough; you should work together with others. When man and God get together, anything can be achieved. You see many light bulbs shining, but the bulbs are not enough by theme-selves; there has to be electrical current passing through the bulbs. The electrical current, on it’s own, is not enough; there needs to be a functioning bulb, too. With both the electrical energy and the inert lamp working together, you can see the light. Thus, when God and man are united, the whole world will be full of love and service. I am always ready -- you have to become ready. I want good in-struments. If you want to set up a really big service project, the proper instruments are required. For performing surgery, a doctor alone is not enough. You must also have the right instruments. Even if the doctor is brilliant, if the instruments are not good enough, the operation will be poor. That kind of instrument is not what I want -- I want the kind of instruments who have love for God, fear of sin and morality in society. The first thing is love for God. You should feel that you will not hurt those whom you love. Furthermore, when you love God, you will not hurt God in any way. Then where is God? God is in everyone -- so you should not hurt anyone. Therefore, if you really love God, you have to love everyone.

The second, is fear of sin. You should avoid that which is not truth, that which is not righteousness. You should know that when you do wrong things, you hurt God; therefore, you should not do such things. How will you develop fear of sin? You will learn this when you have love for God. It is only when you develop love for God, that you will easily develop fear of sin -- and finally, you will achieve unity also, and will be able to create a ‘Garden of Unity’. What does unity mean? With one finger you can’t do anything. You can’t even lift a handkerchief with one finger. When five fingers on a hand work together, you can do as much work as you want to do.

When you look at the five fingers, their length and shapes are different. There will always be external differences, but you should recognise that, within, everybody is the one and the same. When chil-dren wear different costumes in a fancy dress competition you cannot see their real identity. In the presentation, ‘Unity of Faiths’, the children came wearing various kinds of costumes. One came as an Egyptian king. He became an Egyptian king by wearing that costume, but what is he really? Where is his kingdom and where are his people? When he removes the costume, he will become an ordinary boy with no kingdom and no subjects. When you wear a costume, you act the part -- but, actually, the truth is different.

In reality, you have all come here wearing various costumes. Some of you have come as men, some as women, some as children, some as old men and old women. This is all nothing but a fancy dress competition, not the truth. All these bodies are nothing but costumes, but, in truth, your real nature is Atma. Because the Atma has put on various costumes, you see diversity and differences. Only the external things are different -- but internally, everybody is one and the same. “All are one, My dear son, be like to everyone.” Therefore, you have to attain unity within yourself, for, when you have that kind of unity, you can achieve anything in the world. It is My hope that all of you in Australia forget your external differences, recognise the inner unity, and get together to achieve great service.

Do not think that people belonging to the various religions are different. Children may be studying in various schools; some may be studying in the English medium, others in other languages, but the lessons that are taught are one and the same in all the schools. The buildings may be different, the teachers may be different, the languages may be different, but the lessons taught are one and the same. All religions are like different schools, but the lessons taught are only love and service. You should model yourself on the essential unity of all the lessons, and not on the differences in the kinds of buildings and teachers. When you understand the subtle, inner significance of every religion, you will definitely forget the external differences. Only then can you become united. There is only one religion, the religion of love. In all religions, it is the same love which is taught. However, it is not just about telling people to love themselves and their families -- ‘love all’ is what needs to be taught. When you say, ‘love all’, that is the ancient religion or Sanathana Dharma. That is the highest Dharma. Therefore, if somebody asks you what is your religion, you should say, it is the religion of love. If somebody asks you what is your caste, you should say, it is the caste of humanity. If somebody asks, “Who is your God?”, you should say, “Truth is my God.” Truth is omnipresent. So, if you recognise the inner unity of all the teachings, you will forget the external differences. Whichever religion you may belong to, whichever caste you maybe long to, whichever language you may belong to, when all of you unite, society will be become better. Rivers keep flowing; rivers never think that their water is just for Christians or Hindus or Indians. All the river knows is how to flow. It flows for everyone. It does not have any prejudices. Similarly, air flows; you are inhaling the oxygen in the air to live. You only take in oxygen and not nitrogen or carbon dioxide. Whichever religion people belong to, all of them live by breathing in the same oxygen. One sun shines on all the continents of the world.

There is no different sun for Australia, or America or India. When you look at creation, nature or the world, it is always demonstrating unity as a reflection of God’s teaching. Man is nothing but a reflec-tion of God. Nature and your internal ‘nature’ should become one and the same. In nature we find complete selflessness; nature is nothing but a reflection of God Himself. You were born out of nature. Therefore, your own internal nature should also become selfless. Any dish prepared from sugar will be sweet, and can never be bitter. Where do you get the sugar from? It comes from sugarcane. The sugar that comes out of the sugarcane is sweet. Therefore, any dish that is prepared with sugar will be also sweet. Nature, which has come from selfless God, is also selfless. Therefore, man who arises from nature should also be selfless. Knowing your inner nature is nothing but selflessness. Love ev-eryone, serve everyone -- that is how you will find fulfilment in your life. This is My message to you.

Do you have any questions? Ask questions which are useful for everyone.

Question: Swami, why is it that we change when are are around different people? Our personali-ties are ever moulding around different situations and different people. How do we know our true selves?

Swami: This world, which is bound by time, space and circumstances must be respected. For in-stance, if you are in India, you have to follow the rules that pertain to Indian laws. You have to drive on the correct side of the road, you have to deal with things in a certain way. In America, the laws are different and you have to comply with American laws. These are only external variations, that are re-quired in order to suit a certain situation, time or place, but they are just temporary. The inner nature remains the same. The driver who drives in India, or the one who drives in America, or the one who drives in the UK or Australia may have to follow different rules according to the laws of traffic, but his intention is to reach the destination safely, without hurting anyone or himself. In the same way, your life’s intention should not change. The external circumstances may change, the way you do things might change, but your intention should not change -- the intention should be to be kind, to be lov-ing, to be helpful. Externally, you may do it in a different way, but internally the intention should be the same. So there is no conflict if you look at it in a deeper level.

Question: Swami, I was recently in Puttaparthi for a festival. One of the Trust members was giving a talk on seva. He told a story about when he was once in Whitefield with You and he was talking about all the different seva projects that the Trust was doing. He was describing the progress of one seva project and another seva project, when apparently You interrupted him and said that, this is not real seva. Real seva is realising our true nature. Swami, I pray that I have the grace to do that seva for You. Could You please talk about that seva, the ultimate seva and how we may achieve it?

Q & A S e s s i o n - 2 4 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

T h e M e d i ca l Va n

Swami: When a child is born he cries. What does he cry? He cries, ‘Koham, Koham, Koham.’ It means, ‘Who am I, Who am I, Who am I?’ -- because he doesn’t know where he has landed again. He doesn’t know what he’s going to do with his life or what his real nature is. So he is curious and cries, ‘Koham, Who am I?’ The answer to this is, ‘Soham, I am That.’ I am That, means, ‘I am Divinity, I am God.’ However, during the course of his life, he engages in different actions, which have favourable or unfavourable results; which leads to joy or sorrow; which leads to praise or blame; which leads to gains or losses. He continuously shuffles between these two ends of duality, pleasure and pain, loss and gain, good and not so good and, slowly, he develops the feeling that, ‘I am this body, which has a mind. I am just this body-mind complex,’ and then he learns to consider himself to be a body with a certain name and nature. That is when he has to practise, ‘Naham, I am not this body, I am not this body.’ He starts the journey with, ‘Koham, Who am I?’, progresses to, ‘Naham, I am not this body,’ and finally realises, ‘Soham, that is, I am That,’ the Divine Self.

While you are leading your lives in this world, you are faced with duality, you develop this body-consciousness and you develop ego. At that point, service comes to your rescue. Service allows you to think of others before yourselve. Service allows you to sacrifice your petty interests for the sake of others’ joy. Service allows you to give up body-consciousness, ego and attachment, and helps you grow towards God. Therefore, if you render any service with a feeling that you are the doer, you are doing a favour to someone else, and you are benefiting somebody else through your knowledge, skills or resources, then that service is ultimately not going to take you to Soham. You are born with, ‘Koham, Who am I?’ and you also die with, ‘Koham, Who am I?’ You will not realise your true Self. Ser-vice helps you mitigate the effects of ego and attachment. If service is not rendered with that feeling, then it is of no use to Me. If service is done for the sake of preparing reports and analyses and then producing all this data in front of the masses, in order to prove that you have done something for the sake of others, then I don’t need such empty words. Service that does not lead to realisation is no service at all. That is what I mean by saying that true service is the realisation of your Self, and that is only possible if you do it without any trace of ego and attachment.

The right hand should not know what the left hand is doing. The left hand should not know what the right hand has done. Therefore, you should never develop any kind of attachment or ego when you serve. If you serve selflessly, you will definitely gain realisation and, once you are a realised soul, believe Me, that is the greatest service you can do for society. Your very presence will motivate and transform people. Your very existence will become an inspiration for others to follow. Therefore, if you become perfect, if you become Divine, your mere presence will help many, many more. Ulti-mately, that is the greatest service. The sun has simply to rise in the sky but, as it shines, it serves so many people. The whole of life on earth carries on by the mere presence of the sun. If you can be-come like the sun, realising your Divinity, your mere presence will take care of everything else. This is what I mean.

T h e M e d i ca l Va n

Question: Swami has advised young people to become fearless, majestic and just. Swami, we find that very hard to practise. Please enlighten us.

Swami: When does fear come? Fear comes when you think that you’re going to be harmed, you are going to lose something, or you are going to be at a disadvantage. That is when fear comes -- because you identify yourself just with the body and think that it has to be protected, it has to be looked after, it has to be cared for. If anything goes unfavourably, you develop anger, fear and all such negative emotions. It is truly the identification with your perishable, physical nature, which causes fear. If you know that it is just a temporary thing and it has to go some day or another, fear will also go away. When you know the higher truth, fear disappears.

If the children who are here want to use the toilet in the middle of the night, they are afraid that there might be a ghost hiding behind the door, because they think that ghosts exist and are going to catch them, so they don’t want to go to the toilet. What does the mother do? She takes the child by the hand to the toilet, puts on the light and shows him that there is no ghost -- it’sempty. Then the child realises, there is no ghost. There is nothing to fear.

Fear is imaginary; it arises out of the identification with your body, which you think is permanent. So divine incarnations come; they switch on the light of wisdom and then they show you that there is nothing to fear; for all are yours, nobody can harm you, nobody can do anything bad to you. Every-thing that happens is for your good and, when you believe in the Avatar’s word, that everything is nothing but your own Self reflecting in so many mirrors, then there is nothing to fear. If you realise that you are truly Divine, you will understand that you are nothing but God and the whole creation is nothing but God. How can God hurt God, how can God punish God? God can only love God. Therefore, you will come to realise that even if something is unfavourable, it is for your own good. In time you will realise that and then move on. Fearlessness is not possible unless you identify yourself with your true nature, which is Divine. In the Upanishads there is a story, where a lion cub, at birth, gets lost in a herd of sheep. It starts thinking that it is a sheep and starts bleating, eating and doing everything like a sheep. Until, one day, he sees a majestic lion and when it roars, he is in awe because he did not know that such a beautiful, majestic creature was also there in the jungle. When all the sheep are running away in fear, he stands by the side of the majestic lion and the lion asks the cub, “You are a lion cub, what are you doing amongst those sheep?” The cub replies, “I am not a lion, I am a sheep.” The lion says, “No, you are a lion. Come here, I will show you.” He takes the cub and shows him his reflection in the river. The cub sees that he is truly, a lion cub and not just a sheep. With a little effort, he is able to roar and not just bleat. That’s when all the fear disappears. He is no more afraid of anybody, because he knows that he is a lion and not a fearful sheep. When you realise that your true nature is God, all fear will disappear. You will become majestic, you will become just, you will become fearless and above all, you will become loving.

Question: In the world, when we see so much wrong, it’s sometimes difficult to remain silent. I want to know, as an individual, should we say something when something is wrong or just transfer the problem to You, Swami?

Swami: If you see that something is going wrong and do nothing about it, you are also a part of that wrong. You become equally guilty of the mistake being made, or the crime being committed. You have seen, and though it was within your capacity to do something about it, you decided not to. First you need to make an effort yourself -- I always say, “Do your best and then leave the rest to Me.” With-out doing your best and leaving everything to Swami, nothing is going to happen. I put you in such situations to teach you how to deal with them; to make you learn courage; to make you learn com-passion. If you do not make any effort and pass it all on to Me, how are you going to learn anything?

If parents keep doing the their children’s homework out of their misplaced love, when is the child going to learn anything? Therefore, when you see that something is going wrong, make an effort to stop it. Pray to Me to help you. There is no escape -- you must make an effort first and, only then, must you pray to Me for help. Just transferring things to Me is not going to bring you any result. When you are sitting at home and you are hungry, do you simply pray to Me for your hunger to be satisfied? Or do you go to the kitchen, find something, cook it and eat it? When it comes to your own problems, you want to solve them immediately. When it is other people’s problems, you want to transfer it to God (laughter). Make an effort!

Question: Swami, yesterday it was said that, when science ends, Divinity begins. I was recently in a conference with scientists and similar statements were rejected by the scientific community. Isn’t sci-ence also evolving all the time? When does it end? What we know today, we didn’t know yesterday. When is the concept of Divinty going to be accepted by the scientific community?

Swami: There are many states in a country. When you are travelling through one state on a particu-lar road, you pass a sign which says that this state ends and new state begins -- but before all of the states were divided, were not all the roads the same? In a house there are many rooms. Originally it is just open space, then you build walls and differentiate between, ‘Drawing Room’, ‘Dining Room’, ‘Kitchen’ and ‘Bathrooms’. If you remove all the walls, the space becomes one again. If you look at it from the point of Divinity, it is Divinity alone that exists. It is because of your perception that this world is reality, that you create these boundaries and define, ‘this is science’, ‘that is art’, ‘this is Divin-ity’. The truth is, there is only Divinity. Music is Divinity as much as science is. Science is only trying to understand how things work, but the fact remains that it is Divinity which is working. For that matter, even with music, an instrument may be a scientific creation, the sound it produces might be defined by certain laws or rules but, ultimately, when you sing from your heart, you become one with the Divine -- and that is when Divinity is realised. According to Me, it is only Divinity which exists throughout everything. It is your understanding that, ‘this is science’ and, ‘that is Divinity’ and this is a misunderstanding. It is like drawing imaginary borders on the earth and differentiating one area of land from another, this country from another, this state from another, this town from another. These are all imaginary lines.

As your heart expands, as your mind evolves, you will realise that everything is Divinity and there are no limits to Divinity. It doesn’t begin somewhere and end somewhere. It is complete. The Upa-nishads say, Poornamadah, that is, it is complete. Poornamidam, this is also complete. If you remove something from the complete, what remains is also complete. So, Divinity’s nature is infinite. Science is only a way to explain certain laws or phenomena, but it doesn’t explain the workings of it -- that is still beyond the comprehension of the human mind. Science is only related to the mind. Spirituality or Divinty is the subject of the heart. The heart encompasses everything, whilst the mind has its own limitations. Where the mind ends, the heart begins, where science ends, spirituality begins -- but, truly, it is only spirituality which encompasses everything. If you use your heart, you will know this truth. If you use your mind, you have to go on evolving until your mind merges with the nature of your heart, and then you will realise that everything is Divine.

T h e M e d i ca l Va n

Question: Swami, would You kindly tell us a little about using thoughts for service?

Swami: Everything starts with a thought. A thought takes shape as a word and a word takes shape as an action. First you think, then you say, and then you do. So the origin of all activities, not just ser-vice, is thought. Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a tendency. Sow a tendency, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny. Therefore, everything begins from a thought. I understand your predicament. You may not be able to go and speak to people, or physically serve people, but then, in your thoughts, you can always pray for everyone. The mini-mum service I have given to all devotees, is to pray for the well-being of everyone. ‘Samastha Lokah Sukhino Bhavanthu’ (May all beings in all the worlds be happy). If, at the moment, with all your purity, all your intention, you chant that mantra, that will help a lot of people.

What is this world? This world is nothing but energy manifested as matter. Every thought is noth-ing but a form of energy. Energy can merge with energy. Matter has to deal with matter. Therefore, a positive thought is positive energy and it will help. Now, when you are all seated here with many positive thoughts, you feel so energised, you don’t feel dull, you don’t feel slow; you feel happy, you feel light. That is because all your thoughts are very positive here. Therefore, even if you have just one pure, selfless thought emanating from a pure mind, know for sure that someday it will manifest itself as an act of service. It may not be through you, but through someone else. Thought is very impor-tant. Before I said that I want to have a school or hospital, it was just a thought. Then I spoke about it, explained it to My instruments and then, these instruments took it upon themselves to take the path of action and make it manifest as matter. Therefore, every pure thought is extremely important. The minimum you can do is, think good, think divine, think of everyone. Don’t have selfish thoughts. Even in this way you will be able to serve.

Today we will close this session now. There are a lot of children and they all need to have lunch in time. The adults may be able to wait, but the children can’t (laughter). Therefore, we will finish now and meet again in the afternoon.

Yo u t h I n t e r v i e w - 2 4 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

Swami: Did you all have your lunch?

Youth: Yes, Swami!

Swami: Wherever the six qualities of enthusiasm, courage, patience, intelligence, energy (or strength), fearlessness (or boldness) exist, that is where God’s grace also comes. Every person is born as a little baby, grows into a boy or a girl, then a youth, then a man or a woman, finally becomes old, and even-tually gives up the body. Amongst all the phases of one’s life, youth is considered as the spring, and this is the time which can be used to the best of one’s abilities to achieve anything. Many people say that, whilst you are a boy or a girl, you are being educated, then, when you become a youth, it is time to expend your energies to earn, set up a family and acquire all that is required to live a comfortable life. Everybody says God is for the days of retirement -- when nobody else wants you, God will be waiting for you. It is like preparing a nice feast with delicacies and serving it on a fresh green leaf and then calling the demons of anger, jealousy, greed, hatred, and desires and feeding them all with the nice meal and finally, offering the leftovers to God.

After having spoiled one’s body, mind and intellect with many worldly ambitions, finally coming to God like an old broken car is not going to be of very much use. What would God do with it? Youth is the right time to achieve anything. You only need hands, a head and a heart to achieve anything. It is the combination of these three that makes you successful. ‘Hands’ means, physical strength. ‘Head’ means, intellectual strength. ‘Heart’ means, spiritual strength. In the time of youth, all three strengths are in abundance. Using these three, one can achieve anything, even God. Therefore, when the time is right, when the season is right, when you have all these three -- head, hand and heart -- that is the time when you must work hard and achieve the highest. God is the only thing that is real. The world is unreal. It is just the shadow of God. If you have God, you can have the world too -- but if you run after the shadow, you are fooling yourself that you can catch it. The truth is that, you will get nothing. If you want to get real coconuts, you must climb a real coconut tree. Climbing a shadow coconut tree will only give you shadows. That is not going to fill your stomach -- but if you climb a real coconut tree, the shadow will also come to you. If you have God, the world will come to you.

The Kauravas and Pandavas were having a battle. The Kauravas were extremely greedy; they did not want to even give five villages to the Pandavas. Krishna tried His best to negotiate and bring peace, but they did not agree. Their blind selfishness did not allow them to see the destruction that was coming. Finally, Duryodhana and Arjuna both came to see Krishna in order to seek His help for the battle. Arjuna sat at the feet of Krishna and Duryodhana sat at His head, whilst hey were waiting for Him to wake up. He was in yoganidra (a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping). He was not asleep, He was only pretending to be asleep and knew what was going on. He opened His eyes and first looked at Arjuna and said, “Oh Arjuna, what are you doing here?” Krishna pretended as if He did not see Duryodhana.

Yo u t h I n t e r v i e w - 2 4 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

Duryodhana was conceited; he did not want to sit at Krishna’s feet, he wanted to sit right at His head. Krishna looked at Arjuna and asked, “What do you want?” and he said, “I need your help in the battle.” Immediately, Duryodhana cried out, “Krishna, I came first. You must first ask me what I want before you ask Arjuna.” Krishna said, “So be it. What do you want?” He said, “I want all your soldiers, all the horses, your entire cavalry, I want it all for the battle.“ Whereas Arjuna asked, “Krishna, if you give me Yourself, that is more than enough. I do not want all your army.” Krishna agreed immediately. Duryod-hana was smiling to himself, thinking what a fool Arjuna was and that he was definitely going to lose the battle -- but we know what happened, ultimately. It was Krishna who made them win the battle.

Wherever there is Krishna, wherever there is an Arjuna, there is definitely going to be victory. That is the law. What do you mean by Krishna? Krishna means, the incessant grace of God. What is Arjuna? A dutiful youth is an Arjuna. When a dutiful youth and the Lord, who is ever gracious, come together, anything can be achieved. If you achieve God, you can achieve everything else. Otherwise, how else can you explain that five brothers conquered a hundred of them in a war - the most horrific of it’s kind? As youth, you may have many desires, many thoughts, and many ideas. There is nothing wrong in fulfilling all of these, as long as they are within the limits, within principles of dharma. What is dharma? That which your heart says, is your true dharma. If you learn to follow your heart and not be dragged by the vicissitudes of the mind, you will always be on the path of dharma. Dharma will protect you at all times; you need not worry about anything. If you are virtuous, the right that you do will protect you. Even if a hundred people tell a lie, it cannot become the truth, and even if only one person is tells the truth, it will not become a lie.

It is not the quantity of people in the world who follow a certain way of life, which ensures that such a life is worth living -- if one follows the path of God, that is the real path. Don’t be like sheep -- they don’t know where they are going, they don’t even know what they want; they are too nervous and keep walking, one behind the other, in a flock without even knowing where they are heading. If one falls, they all fall. Be like the lion, who chooses his own path, rather than following blindly. The whole world is full of fear -- fear of its own existence. That is why people behave the way they do. The elders tell the younger ones, “Don’t follow the path of spirituality, it is not fit for you. Be like this person or that person, earn wealth, become rich, accumulate all kinds of valuables; that is the way.” The truth is that, once you turn back and ask them, “You have done all these things, are you happy as a result?”, believe it or not, most of them will not be able to answer. They are not happy, yet they want everyone to be dragged into the same unhappiness, for they don’t know any other path. Be like the lion; fol-low the Master, face the devil, fight until the end and finish the game. The Master is your own heart, the heart where God resides, the heart where the goodness resides. Have the courage to follow that and be assured that the truth, this righteousness that you follow, will protect you at all times. You will lead a very good quality of life, if not quantity -- there is no point in accumulating more and more things for yourself, which will not give you permanent happiness. Aim for permanent happiness, which comes only with a selfless life, and be fearless that, whatever you need, God will provide you at the right time and in the right quantity. He is looking after each one of you, but just as a mother may have many children, the children who are most dear to the mother are those who follow her advice. In the same way, amongst all the beings that are God’s creation, the ones that are dear to God, are the ones who follow God’s command.

The world is going through a very difficult time. People are deviod of wisdom; they do not know where they are heading; there is nobody to lead them correctly. In these times, the greatest seva you can do, is to show them all the right way of living one’s life. By your selflessness, by your courage and by conviction, you will be able to show them the right path. I depend on all of you to lead the rest of the world onto the path of selflessness -- and I not just request you, but I command you, to have the courage to lead such selfless lives.

I am very happy with the medical clinic. I had only mentioned it once and, immediately, the youth in Australia have come together to embark on such a noble mission. You must make it a success and make it happen in every town, in every city, all around Australia; let it be a seva project which is the first of many of its kind. You will be appreciated, not only by your local people, but even the Gov-ernment will be inspired. They will call you to speak to other youth forums, they will give you much encouragement and, by your work, you will be able to inspire many more. As I said, by lighting one lamp, you can light many more. It is the first lamp that needs to be lit. It has already been lit here; use this lamp, take it all around and light many more, and remove the darkness from the world. What more can I say? I have always been saying the same thing.

Develop courage; develop fearlessness; use your hands, head and heart to live a life in accordance with My commands and I will be there within you, all the time. Even the shadow leaves you as it gets dark, but I, being the Indweller, am always with you, at every moment. Draw courage from this fact that I am within and will take care of everything. Lead an absolutely selfless life. Practise, practise, practise until you become perfect.

How many people are involved in this medical clinic? Doctors? Similarly, one by one, you must do the same in the other cities. Learn from each other’s experience, learn from what each group has done, and implement it in other places, too. So, irrespective of religion, caste, creed or nationality, you must serve -- no boundaries. You must be willing to embrace everyone in this mission of service; you must not discriminate. What do you want from Me?

Youth: Your love, Swami.

Swami: My love is there all the time. You don’t need to ask anything from Me; ask for Me alone. If you have Me, you have everything. Other people are saying that I should go to other cities, too. If I keep going around Australia like this, who will do the work in India? Therefore, we should keep to one centre, one place, where everyone can come; that is easier. In this way, we can spend more time together here, rather than spending a little time everywhere.

T h e M e d i ca l Va n

Youth: Swami, what about opportunities that come that are not under the Sai banner. Can you please enlighten us on what we should do?

Swami: What is Sai banner? (laughter) Do you have a Sai flag, like an India flag, or an Australia flag? (laughter) Everything is Sai. What is not Sai? Everybody is Sai’s. So everything belongs to Sai. You should not lose an opportunity to serve, wherever it comes to you. In fact, you should do it with all your strength and heart, so that people say, “This person seems to be very different from the others. What makes him so different?” SAI, See Always Inside. If you keep looking inside yourself, you will always find Sai within. If you look outside, you will not find Him. You must search for the thing where it is, not in some other place. It is like a foolish man who puts his spectacles on his head and looks for them everywhere else, when they are right on his head. God is right within you and everything belongs to God, so there is no distinction. If you have an opportunity, go and serve anywhere.

Youth: Swami, I am from the Information Technology, IT, profession. How can I use my skills in IT as a software developer, to selflessly serve Swami within the community?

Swami: Nowadays, nothing can work without computers. There are computers everywhere, even in our hospital -- if you go and look, you will see that they use a lot of computers to maintain records for the patients and for many other activities. Surgeries are done using computers now. There is a lot of work that can be done using Information Technology. This Information Technology should become ‘transformation technology’. Everything that you use should lead to transformation. If you think about it, you have many opportunities. I tell you that, all over India, in our institutions, we are now using IT extensively, in order to reach out to more people, to maintain records -- it helps in many ways.

So use it to the benefit of people. As long as you use technology correctly, it is of help. It is like a knife -- if you use it correctly, you can save somebody; if you use it incorectly, you may end up killing another. Use everything judiciously. There is scope for everyone to do seva. You cannot say, “I don’t know these things, so I can’t do seva.” If there is nothing you can do directly, you can always go and stand by the side of the person who is doing seva and help him in whatever way you can -- but say-ing, “I can’t do seva because I know nothing,” is not correct. God has given everybody some talent or another that can be used to serve. Therefore, be willing. If you are available, you can definitely do a lot.

Youth: I have a question; in Australia the aged-care sector is quite big; what is Your advice on looking after the elderly?

48

Yo u t h I n t e r v i e w - 2 4 S e p t e m b e r ( M o r n i n g )

T h e M e d i ca l Va n

Swami: Those elderly people who have no one to look after them are definitely the responsibility of the community. However, in the case of elderly people who have their own children, but the chil-dren don’t look after them, it is the responsibility of those children to look after them. Whilst you can, always deal with this issue temporarily by opening old age homes, or day-care centres and the like. You can definitely render service if you find out that there are children who have abandoned their parents; then the problem lies, not with the parents, but in the family culture that they have left be-hind. You must, therefore, promote awareness amongst the children, that if they leave their parents uncared for, their own children will leave them, too.

You must make them return to their parents and look after them. It is great seva to look after one’s own parents. Therefore, My advice is that, where the old people have no children and they are not being cared for -- they are abandoned -- then definitely go and spend time with them. They don’t expect much; just a little time to sit and talk to them, ask them how they are doing, is more than enough for them -- but, in the case of people who have children, you must approach the children and inspire them and motivate them, to look after their parents. That is the right solution -- but you going and looking after somebody else’s parents is not the right thing, you must make those chil-dren realise that they must take care of their parents; that is more important.

Youth: I am a Sai youth from Brisbane. Swami, there are very few Sai youth in Brisbane and we try and do what we can but, given our small numbers, what can we from Brisbane do for You, Swami?

Swami: ‘Small numbers’ is only in your mind. You think you are a small number of people, but one person can achieve a lot. Even if just one starts off an activity with selflessness, believe Me, a lot more people will come and join you. Don’t just look at the people who belong to families that are devoted to Swami. All youth, all children are ours. Love knows no distinction, service knows no discrimina-tion; if you start serving and loving, more and more people will join. You will be surprised to see that there will be more youth coming from all over the place than from Sai families, because they are open-minded; anything good, they will accept. Therefore, become open-minded and you will at-tract many more people. Keep doing your work courageously, and more and more people will come and join you. You are a doctor, give seva as a doctor, and then other doctors who know you will also come along and your group will go on increasing. It is very important that somebody should start off selflessly, then everybody will come. All revolutions in the world have started with just one person. Looking at that one person’s conviction, his faith and his sacrifice, others have joined in and then it turned into a revolution. In the same way, this spiritual revolution will begin with you, and more and more people will gradually join. Do medical seva; more will join..

This medical unit should primarily focus on school children; that is My main consideration, simply because the children are going to see you and ask, “Why are these people coming and treating us, free of charge?” Then they will understand that you are doing it simply out of the feeling of brother-hood, sharing love and affection. This will transform them very quickly. Those children will go back to their parents and tell them about it. Then their parents will come -- treat them, too, and they will become transformed; they will go and tell their communities, and they will come too. In this way, ev-erybody will be transformed. It is not the medical seva that you are doing. Focus on the thought that you are doing an act of service which will lead to transformation. If somebody says, “I want to do it for free,” in India, people think that such a person must want to become a politician, that he wants to get votes from everyone -- but, if you do everything without expectations, nobody will believe you, in the beginning. If money is charged, people will confidently accept, even at a very nominal price, or for very substandard service. If you give free of charge, they will think, “Oh, these people may not serve us well, they may not be very good”. That is the way the world thinks -- but in a few months, people will know that you are providing as good a quality of service, as is given in any other hospital or clinic.

Concentrate on the children -- I am very keen that children should be transformed. The elders are al-ready set in their ways. They are the trees which cannot be straightened anymore -- but children are pliable; they can be moulded correctly. When children see your sacrifice, they will also become in-spired to become like you. Think of your childhood; haven’t you looked at some youth and thought, ‘I should be like him’ or ‘I should be like her?’ Children will respond to this sort of ideal. That is the right way. Concentrate on schools and school children, start with camps in the school grounds, and make it open even for elders, if they should come. That is how you must begin. It will find its way; just as the river finds its way to the ocean, your work will find its way to fulfilment.

Youth: Swami, with Your divine Grace, You have allowed me to be a part of the medical unit. I am graduating this year, and I need to look for a job. Swami, where should I apply if I am to continue to be part of this service?

Swami: Right now, you are a part of it, right now, you work for it. When you get a job, wherever you go, you can continue to do so. You can start with this project. As I said, at this moment, it is important to concentrate on what is in hand at present. I tell you, it really does not matter -- wherever your job takes you, go there and think that it is another opportunity for you to start service there. You will have to go a little further, but you should not be disheartened, for you will find more people and new people to work with you and recommence this in another place. Do you know how a tree multiplies? It does not grow in the same place; its seeds fly to far-off lands and then they grow into trees. Then more seeds are formed and they fly to other places and yet more trees grow. This is the way trees multiply themselves. In the same way, each one of you, wherever you go, can start this work and spread it further.

Youth: Swami, destiny or free-will?

Swami: You see, destiny and free-will have to be understood in context. For a child who is in primary school, the sun rises and sets; that is the truth. Even if you tell him that the sun doesn’t rise or set, he is not going to understand at all as he can see the sun rise and set and will think that what he sees is right and what you say is wrong. However, the same child grows a little more and is able to better understand. You can explain to him that there is a solar system and that the sun does not rise or set; it is the earth that revolves, and so on. He will understand and be able to appreciate the fact.

If you go further, you will also be able to tell him that the sun is, in essence, a host of chemical reac-tions that go on inside the sun, resulting in this kind of energy. It is really not a ball of fire, but it is several reactions, within a ball of gas, going on continuously. This is the way you can further explain to him as he grows up. Divine will, destiny or free-will have to be understood in the right context. For those who are still full of body-consciousness, they must understand that free-will exists. It is like when you go on the road and, if you don’t know the way, you will ask someone which way you should take, the right or the left; and if he tells you right, and you go right, you reach your destina-tion by a particular path. If he says left and you go left, you reach where you want to go using that road. There might be many roads to the same destination. Reaching the destination is destiny. The way you reach it; which path you take, is free-will. Ultimately, everyone has to fulfil their destiny -- but how you do so is your free-will. Therefore, free-will has a limited role.

Ultimately, what is ‘written’ is going to happen -- but whether it will happen in a nicer way, in an easier way, or in a tougher or more difficult way depends on your free-will. If you surrender your free-will to God, then God will prevail over all your decisions, all your circumstances and help you reach your destination in the safest and shortest way. If you have such a busy mind and so much body consciousness, that you tend to ignore the voice of God and listen, instead, to the noise of your mind, then your mind will take you according to your place. In the end, the only perfected person is one who does not have a mind or a will of his own, for he has completely surrendered his mind and will to the Lord and follows only the Lord’s direction. Unless you have reached that kind of perfec-tion and have absolutely surrendered everything that you have to God, you have to understand that free-will and destiny exist. Your destiny is what you will ultimately achieve, and how you will achieve it will be defined by your free-will. Fill your mind with positive thoughts and pure feelings and God will guide you to the right place.

Youth: Beloved Lord, thank You so much for giving us Your grace and Your love. We started a ‘Gazing’ service with Ms Connie Shaw and I would like to ask You, would You like us to continue with this? Can it be incorporated as part of the medical unit as alternative option? What are Your thoughts on this project?

Swami: Another project is going to happen in a year or two, when a separate institution will be es-tablished for encouraging these kinds of alternative therapies, medicines and other studies. Do the ground work to train more people on this subject, at present. It is not to be used immediately; it is going to take a year or two more, so that there is more time to train people on this subject.

Youth: Swami, apologies for the personal question, but, do I move myself and the children to Mur-willumbah now and look after the medical clinic, or do I wait until my wife finishes her university in two years and then all come together? I am so confused. Sorry, Swami.

Swami: Yes, you move after a period when your whole family will be comfortable. Until then, there are other young people here who will be able to take care of this work. So don’t worry -- I have al-ready started brining people to Murwillumbah. Those who need to come, are already arriving here. When the time is right for you, you will come. The best way to get answers is to sit down peacefully, close your eyes, and pray to Me, and the thoughts that come from within will be the right answers. Ultimately, this is what I am trying to encourage.

How is it possible to answer everybody’s question in such a short time, in such a short session? Ultimately, everyone has to find the answers from within. Each person is full of knowledge, full of wisdom. It is like a library inside, but only if you go into the library will you be able to use the books to your advantage. All wisdom lies within you. If you close your eyes, pray to God and ask Him for guidance, He will somehow lead you to the answer -- through a book; through a friend; through something that you read accidentally; through a person you meet accidentally, or even through just intuition. It is important is that you trust and move forward in confidence that this is so. Each is equally full of wisdom; each is equally Divine. So the answers to all your questions lie within. Try whichever way helps you to connect to your inner Divinity and seek the answers, for all ways are right. I can answer in any way. Trust your intuition.

What about the other meeting? We should go there because they are waiting, too -- but more im-portantly, amongst all people, the youth are the right age and this is the right time for you to use all your abilities and skills to attain anything, including the highest -- that is God. The mind can lead you to the world, and it can also lead you to God. It is, after all, the driver of the vehicle. If you guide the driver correctly, it will take you to the right destination. If you guide it incorrectly, it is not the fault of the driver. Therefore, use all your abilities, all your energies, and all your skills to move towards God and be fearless. God will look after all your needs.

Youth: Swami, when will You be coming back to Australia?

Swami: Do you want Me to go away? I don’t want to go. (laughter) I am always here. It is only these people who keep coming and going.

I am organising a World Youth Meet in the month of November during My birthday celebrations in Muddenahalli. The idea of the World Youth Meet is to really find the right quality of youth who have the courage to follow God. The path of God is not that easy -- but it is the path which is most blissful. Therefore, to attain permanent bliss, you must have the courage to follow the path. As I have said before, even if thousands follow the wrong path, it cannot become right. Even if there are only a handful of people who follow the right path, it will always remain right. Therefore, this World Youth Meet is an attempt to gather, to unite, like-minded youth from all around the world, so that in unity they will be able to find purity, and ultimately reach their Divinity. Whatever part of the world they are from, they should be united, share their experiences, share their understandings, share their thoughts, share their work, and learn from each other. They should truly feel that all are brothers and sisters from different parts of the world, all belonging to same father-mother, that is, God. It is an at-tempt to unite all the youth from around the world and all are welcome.

Jesus Christ summed up the essence of all religions 2000 years ago. An attorney went to Him and said, “Master, I don’t have time to listen to Your summons. Can You summarize Your teachings in two sentences?” Jesus said, “First, love the Lord with all thy heart, might, and soul. Second, love thy neigh-bour as thyself.” These are the two teachings all divine masters have been teaching.

Many times this question was asked to Bhagawan, “Who are You?” Once, He enunciated what essen-tially He is, in a Sanskrit shloka: “I am not a man, an angel, a God, a demi-God; Neither am I a brahmin (scholar in the scriptures of religion) a Kshatriya (ruler), a Vaishya (businessman), nor a Shudra (one belonging to the labour class). I am not a Brahmachari (celibate), nor a Gruhastha (householder), nor a Vanaprastha (hermit), nor a Sannyasi (recluse). Finally, He said, “I am the Teacher of the Eternal Truth. I am Truth, Beauty and Goodness.” What is the Truth that He teaches us? Every one of us is di-vine, and the only thing we need to do to realise this ultimate truth is to shed our selfishness, love all and serve all.

In 1982, in the initial years at Muddenahalli, one of my brothers who was principal of the school came to me and said, “Brother, I have a problem.” Upon enquiry, he said that he wanted to give up this job and go to Himalayas.” Why? He said, “Because I want to realise God.” We went to Brindavan to seek Swami’s guidance on the matter. Thousands of people had gathered for darshan, while we waited near the Brindavan gate. Swami came, looked at my friend and said, “You want to go to Himalayas?” He said, sheepishly, “Yes, Swami.” “Why?” “To realise Swami,” he said. Then Swami asked him, “Swami is here and you want to go to Himalayas? I have given you this job which will grant you everything and you want to leave it and go? Understand, you got this opportunity to be My servant in My mission because you did many years of penance in many lives in the Himalayas. Just do what I tell you and I will grant you everything, I will grant you salvation and liberation! I will grant you moksha!”

Yesterday, someone asked the question, “Swami, You say we have to realise our Divinity and get rid of our selfishness. What is the way? Is it the path of self-enquiry, meditation, or self-surrender?” And Swami said there are many paths to the destination, but the simplest, best and most relevant in modern times is just selfless love and selfless service. That is the sim-plest way, which can grant us the highest reward, the highest bliss, and most importantly, fulfilment in our lives.

Embodiments of divine love!

For many years I have been thinking that I should come to Australia. Many devotees from Australia came to Me and prayed to Me, “Swami, You should come to Australia.” I told every one of them that I would certainly come.

When the devotees asked Me, “Swami, when are You coming?” I told them that I would come very soon. Whilst I had the physical body, this kind of travel was not possible. Everyone coming here from there had to put in a lot of effort and undergo a lot of difficulties. They had to have passports, visas and tickets to come here, but I don’t need any of these.

As long as you have a body, you have to follow the laws of time, space and causation. The world is bound by the regulations of time, space and causation. As long as you have body-consciousness you are subject to all these things. It is inescapable. As long as you are a part of this physical world, you have to follow the laws of the physical world -- but this physical world is a very tiny dot in God’s creation.

The physical has strict limitations. Whatever you want to do in this limited world, can be done only to a limited extent -- but the ‘Empire of the Spirit’ is very vast. The subtle, spiritual universe is much, much bigger than this physical universe. If you want to enter that ‘Empire of the Spirit’ you need a passport, a visa, and other required things. In this world, if you want to go to a particular place, you need to get the papers required to go there. Similarly, if you want to go from the physical universe to the spiritual universe, you need the right credentials. What are they? The ‘passport’ is a very pure mind -- one that allows you to recognise that you are not the body, that you are Divine. Only when the word, ‘Divine’ is written in your passport, can you enter the spiritual universe -- but a mere pass-port is not enough; you also need a ‘visa’. What is that visa? Selfless love is that visa. Only when you have selfless love can you enter that universe. Even these two are not enough; you need to purchase a ticket to go there. A ticket is nothing but a piece of paper which will enable you to travel. You have to make payment to purchase a ticket. Where do you get this particular ‘ticket’? Only if you go to the counter of a spiritual master will you get this ticket. In fact, the ticket is nothing but selfless actions. Only when you perform selfless actions, will God send you that ticket.

D i v i n e D i s c o u r s e - 2 4 S e p t e m b e r ( E v e n i n g )

In this world, everybody has a bank account. If you deposit any money into your account, you will re-ceive a receipt. If you make a deposit, your balance will grow. When you withdraw money from your account, the balance will diminish. If there is a zero balance in your account, you cannot purchase a ticket. If there is no money in your account and you issue a cheque, it will only bounce and you will not get anything. If you want to reach the Divine, God, you need to get a ‘ticket’ of positive actions. What is positive action? It is meritorious action. What is meritorious is that action which helps others -- and sin is that which hurts others. If you want to have a credit balance in your account, you need to help others. Hurting others and thereby incurring sin equates to making a withdrawal. How far you travel depends on the kind of balance you have in your bank account.

I also have a bank and all your accounts are kept in My bank. I constantly look at your balances. When you pray to attain Godliness or God, the first thing I will enquire into is what balance you have in your account. I also look at your passport, whether it is filled with body-consciousness or divine consciousness. Only when you have a divine-conscious passport will you get the right visa and that visa is selfless love. As long as you have body-consciousness, you live a very limited and confined life, confined to ‘I and mine’. When you have divine consciousness, you develop the feeling of ‘we and ours’ and have selfless love. Because you have selfless love, all the actions you perform become self-less actions. The selfless actions will be credited to your spiritual account and increase your balance in the bank. Only then is it possible for you to purchase a ticket and have the vision of God. However, it is not possible for everybody to do that. You may have the passport of divine consciousness, you may also obtain a visa, but sometimes you don’t have a big enough balance of positive actions to purchase the air ticket. If you want to meet your parents, who are in another country, you need to purchase a ticket and travel there. You may telephone your parents and tell them that you don’t have enough money in your balance to purchase the tickets, so please come to you, instead. Then your parents will come to live with you. Quite often, God, in order to set mankind free, comes down to their level as an Avatar. He demonstrates, by His life of selfless actions, how human beings can also increase their balance of selfless actions. Only then, when they have accumulated this balance of selfless actions, can thay also return to God.

The first step is for you to stop telling yourself that you are only human. When you say to yourself, “I am man,” you are only speaking half the truth. The complete truth is, “I am God.” What you believe is what happens. When you start contemplating the truth that, “I am God,” ultimately, divine feelings will enter your heart. Many devotees pray to Swami, “Swami, please teach us one mantra or watch-word.” They desire that, by chanting that mantra, they will understand the divine principle. Now I want to give you, first and foremost, this mantra. You have to keep chanting, “I am God, I am God.“ Even your breath keeps on chanting, “I am God, I am God” -- 21,600 times a day. It keeps on saying, “So Ham, So Ham.” ‘So’ means, That. ‘Ham’ means, I am. I am that; I am the truth; I am God; I am Divine.

The breath keeps on chanting the mantra, but you don’t listen to its voice. If you sit down and con-template on truth, your life will become Divine. At every moment, you should be talking positive things. You should not say, “I am man, I am man,” you should say, “I am God, I am God.”

Even psychologists advise not to think negatively, but to think positively. It is not correct, when a child makes a mistake, to say that he is a very bad person, and is doing a lot of wicked things. The boy will listen to you when you tell him that he is a good boy, but could become better. When you say that positively, he will listen to you. If you constantly tell him, “You are bad, you are useless,” he will really become useless. At no time did I address you as ‘Embodiments of Humanity’ or ‘Embodiments of Demonic Nature’. I constantly address you as ‘Embodiments of the Divine’. As you believe, so does it happen. Therefore, constantly keep chanting, “I am God, I am God.”

When you keep chanting this mantra, you will become Divine and will obtain the divine passport. When you obtain this divine passport, your mind will be completely filled with love. You will also come to know that everybody is Divine and, when you know that everybody is Divine, you will defi-nitely serve everyone -- and all the time you will love and serve everybody. Whatever you do should be for the sake of knowing your true nature. Your true nature is Divinity. For the last two days, all I have been telling you is this. Two days, two years or twenty years, however long I tell you, you are still not understanding.

Only a person with sincerity of purpose will attain wisdom. If you are sincere and make a sincere ef-fort to know the truth, you will definitely achieve it. The Divinity which is inherently in you does not come from outside. First, you should come to know that you are Divine. When a sculptor wants to make an statue out of a stone, he chisels it. When he chisels, what he does is, to remove what is not that statue. The statue is there, within the stone. When you remove that which is not the statue, the statue emerges from the stone. The statue is not coming from somewhere else. The statue is already there in the stone. When you gradually remove from the stone what is not the statue, you will see the statue. You are the embodiments of the divine Atma. You are not the body, which is so tempo-rary; the body with its ten senses -- you are the Atma are embodied in that body. When there is body, there is breath and, once you have a body, you will become selfish. I, Swami, am not selfish. When you remove selfishness -- which is not your true nature, the ‘real you’ will emerge. Only then can you know your true nature.

The purpose of all divine incarnations is to come down in a human body to teach this eternal truth. And, today, Badri also said, “Why is Swami doing all this? For many years He has been teaching us all with great love and compassion. Why is He repeating it again and again?” You may have a weekly holiday on Sunday, but I don’t have any holiday and I go on working everyday. Why? The only desire that I have is, to demonstrate to you that you are Divine. If you follow My words and practise them, naturally you will also attain the divine state. It is no use for Me to keep on repeating the same mes-sage, again and again. If you follow it, even a very little and practise it, you will definitely attian God.

Once, a sculptor brought three statues to a king. All three statues looked alike and nobody could find any differences externally in them -- but the sculptor questioned the king if there was an intelligent person in his kingdom, that could identify the difference between the three statues. The king had a very intelligent person in his court named Tenali Rama. Tenali Rama could answer any question. The king called Tenali Rama and told him he had to answer the sculptor’s question. Tenali Rama asked for a day to think about it.

In spite of him trying his hardest all night, he could not work out what the difference was -- but ultimately, he prayed to God to safeguard his honour and then he had an idea what the difference between the three could be. He took a wire; in the first statue, he inserted the wire into one ear and it came out of the other ear. In the case of the second, he inserted the wire into the ear and it came out of the mouth. With the third statue, when he inserted the wire, it went into the heart and did not come out. He came and described these differences between the three statues.

There are three kinds of devotees. With many devotees, My words go in one ear and out of the other; they retain nothing. The second type of devotees listen to something, but they just talk about it; all they do is listen and talk, going here and there to talk about it, but they never contemplate that truth. They keep telling everybody else, but they don’t practise it themselves. The third kind of devo-tees are those who listen, they don’t talk about it, but they keep it in their heart and contemplate it. Amongst the three categories of devotees, the third category are very noble. You have heard all this. It is of no benefit to you for My words to go in one ear and out of the other. It is also useless if you just talk and waste those words. Whatever you have heard, first you have to contemplate the truth in those words and then put them into practice in your life. You should love everybody and serve everybody.

When I come here next time, I want to see a divine transformation in every one of you. Everyone who sees you should ask, “How is it that these people have transformed themselves so much? How did it happen?” When a student secures very good marks in an examination, people will ask, “Who is your teacher?” Naturally, they believe that it is because he had a good teacher that he was able to score good marks. People should look at you and see a great transformation in you and ask you how this transformation came about. Then, with courage, you can tell them, “All this is happening because of Sai Baba. Because Sai Baba came, taught us, encouraged us, gave us enthusiasm and inspiration, we are all changed.” They will then ask you the question, “Sai Baba is gone, isn’t He?” Then you have to tell them, “Only His body has gone but, because he is Atma, He pervades everybody.” The evidence is the kind of changes that will have taken place within you.

I conclude My discourse with abundant blessings and grace that, whether you are children, young men, young women or elders, you practise this teaching, ‘Love all, serve all’ and enjoy divine bliss.

I am very, very happy with the music programme and invite all of you to come and sing in India, too.
