Hi...

One of the best events of the year is happening in a few weeks - Munster Cruise 2.

Last year saw a 30 strong convoy depart from Scarborough weaving our way to the Munster Gar-

age. This laid back event got so much great feedback that we have put it on the Calendar again. There

will be live music performed by Mike De Velta.

The event is FREE, as a fundraiser for our club charity ...the DuchenneFoundation . We will have collec-

tion tins at the Scarborough start and also at the Munster Garage. BBQs will be provided for use, so pack

your food for a picnic atmosphere, and put your dancing shoes on! Check out the poster on page 12

for more information.

With that aside, the National Bug-In is on in Victoria this year, Geelong to be exact. Ray Willis is making

the massive trip over by road in his 1982 T3 Kombi (the Wedge) to take part. Club members Merrick and

Karla Paget from Bridgetown will be keeping him company in their T5 Kombi Beach (Big Bird). Bug-In

stalwarts and club members Pete and Trish Summerfield will be flying across to be there also. No doubt

we'll get a great article in the May-June edition Check out the poster on page 18 for more infor-

mation.

We are always looking for stories and ideas from you the member, so please get in touch by email, tele-

phone, or use the forum located on the club website www.vwclub.com.au/forum

“Members, this is a great family event and we are privileged to get the op-

portunity to have a "Volksville area" right in the thick of things.

“Been the last 4 years and we’d love

to have your company for this great club event” Jamie Barrett

NOTE: Those who want to camp in the "VOLKSVILLE" area as per previ-

ous years, please DO NOT buy your tickets online at Moshtix.

Instead PHONE THE FESTIVAL OF-

FICE on 92463311 between 10am and 5pm.

To save you time on the phone PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELF AS A VW CLUB MEMBER and Woody or Louise will organise everything for

you. This helps me with numbers so I can plan the area size for your enjoy-ment.

If you haven't been before or are un-able to stay over, the festival makes a great day trip.

We'd love to see you all to celebrate

our 22nd year.

The time had come... The last couple of months have

been emotional for me. I sold my

1965 Split screen kombi, some-

thing that I said I would never

do!

I owned her (Kate) for over 10

years. I brought her as a running

registered project. Over the

years she got most of the atten-

tion that was needed included

motor rebuild, front beam over-

haul, welding, painting and some

shiny bits! Kate has served me

well with only minor breakdown

hiccups.

Owning a VW is a love affair,

most part you love them, other

times can be frustrating but when

you get in them and drive the

smile removes all those negative

thoughts.

I was at a point were Kate need-

ed another lease of energy and

money. I considered my options

then a 1963 project was discov-

ered and choices become wider.

Do I put a whole load of effort

into one that I had already done

or do another? I opted for the

later.

This decision was helped by the

fact that others in the local scene

were on the market for a going

Split. So a deal was done with

close friend and club member

Andy.

I was left with my modern Passat

and mates “loan” cars for runs

and club meets – Thanks Gra-

ham. But it is not the same

cruising in your own vehicle. I

had withdrawal symptoms! Then

a beautiful 1969 microbus came

up for sale on the club forum. I

had to go and have a test drive.

A week or two later it was mine,

a stand in bus to get me by while

the year long project is under-

way.

This stand in 1969 Microbus has

been around locally for a while

and passed hands a number of

times, all of the previous owners

I know comment on how they

loved it and shouldn’t have let it

go. I am now falling in love with

this one and will find it hard to

part ways when the Split project

is complete.

The exercise of selling a Kombi

(not just one that you love) and

not having one makes you realize

how much of a part of your life

they are.

You can follow the ‘63 project on

the forum under “Crystal”. There

is a build thread called “Crystal

II” both out of the same yard.

Hi Folks,

The South West VW meets in

Busselton have been running eve-

ry month for over 18th months

and although they have been a

great success, the best turnouts

are in the warmer months when a

cruise or lunch has been organ-

ised.

Therefore with the idea to focus

on more cruises, lunches etc.,

during the warmer months, the

SW monthly meets will now

only run from January through

to June.

However, even with this change

keep an eye out here in ViaWest

or on the Club events page or fo-

rum for other ‘one-off’ VW events

in the South West.

Such an event has been the popu-

lar Vee Dubs@Busselton Drive-in

that has run for the last two

years. A major event will be on

again so put the first weekend in

November in your calendar… Fri-

day 31st Oct, Saturday 1st and

Sunday 2nd November 2014.

Sunday 9th

March... The next South West Monthly

Gathering @ Busso will be on

Sunday 9th March.

This will be the normal get togeth-

er at the Busselton Beach…end of

Queen St at the Signal Park car

park at 11:00am...then a cruise to

a popular location!

Coming along, have a suggestion

or have a question...

2014 Brewery

and Busso... The 2014 Brewery and Busso was

again another successful weekend

that included the South West

Monthly Gathering @ Busso on

Sunday 9th February.

The weather was at its best and

the cruise was even better. The

Old Coast Road Brewery again

out on great food and beverages.

Thanks to the management for

the club discounts.

Our stay at the dog friendly Four

Seasons Caravan Park was very

pleasant, being close to the beach

and with plenty of shade. Great

organisation from Kim Muste.

Photos from the weekend are on

the next page...

Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc) 1955 - 2015...ideas for 60th Anniversary in Twenty15

Volkswagen Australia has ex-

panded its multi-award-winning

Golf range to include the new

Golf Wagon - the perfect all-

round car. Planned as a member

of the Golf 7 series from the out-

set, it is the first Golf Wagon to

utilise the technologies and bene-

fits of the innovative modular

transverse matrix (MQB).

This means: reduced

weight (up to 165 kg

lighter), optimised

package (100 litres

more cargo space),

sharper body pro-

portions, new safety

and convenience sys-

tems, new petrol and

diesel engines and new running

gear technologies.

Now produced exclusively in Mo-

sel, Germany, the Golf Wagon is

the ideal car for active lifestyles.

It boasts an attractive, high-

quality Golf design both inside

and out with the full functionality

of

a wagon. With a new entry price

the Golf Wagon is now even more

affordable to own.

Every model line of the seventh

generation Golf hatch

(nonperformance) has been repli-

cated for the Golf Wagon. This

includes the new entry model

wagon in the 90 TSI, the now

mid-range 90 TSI Comfortline

and the introduction of the pre-

mium Highline grade with 103

TSI and 110 TDI variants. All Golf

Wagons are paired with a DSG

transmission and achieve low fuel

consumption (from 4.7 l/100km

in the 110 TDI Highline) and CO2

emissions.

The exterior styling of the Golf

Wagon has been transformed,

resulting in a car which is 4657

mm long (26 mm longer that the

Mk VI), and 1,799 mm wide (18

mm wider), giving it a sportier

and more distinctive look than

the previous model. These dy-

namic proportions set the stage

for the impressive design of the

wagon, which follows the lines of

the Golf hatchback until the B

pillars, with uniquely Golf Wagon

styling from the rear doors to-

wards the back.

Importantly for wagon buyers the

new Golf Wagon also has 100 li-

tres more cargo space than its

predecessor. Cargo capacity,

which was increased from 505 to

605 litres (loaded up to the

backrest of the rear seat), offers

ample luggage space even with

five passengers on board.

When loaded to the backs

of the front seats and

up to the ceiling, car-

go capacity grows to

1,620 litres

(previous model:

1,495 litres).

All models in the new Golf Wagon

range boast the same impressive

standard features and options as

available in the Golf 7 hatch.

Standard features on the 90 TSI

Golf Wagon include 5.8-inch

Composition Media display, multi-

collision braking system, elec-

tronic parking brake with Auto-

Hold function, XDL transverse

differential lock, battery regener-

ation mode and Stop/Start sys-

tem, cruise control and Bluetooth

connectivity and USB interface.

In addition to the 90 TSI base

model, the Comfortline offers a

comprehensive array of standard

features, including a rear-view

camera, front and rear parking

sensors, rain sensing windscreen

wipers, auto dimming rear-view

mirror and automatic headlights,

plus dual-zone climate control air

conditioning.

For the first time in the Golf Wag-

on range the premium Highline

grade is offered. In conjunction

with a 103 kW TSI or 110 kW TDI

engine, the Highline wagon is

comprehensively equipped with

luxurious Alcantara and cloth

trim, 17-inch alloy wheels and

Discover Media Satellite Naviga-

tion.

A wide range of optional features

is also available for the Golf Wag-

on. This includes the Driver As-

sistance Package, with its im-

pressive safety and convenience

systems – Adaptive Cruise Con-

trol (ACC), Front Assist with City

Emergency Brake, Proactive Oc-

cupant Protection System, Park

Assist 2 and Driving Profile Selec-

tion.

Golf Wagon

wins '2014 iF Gold

Award' The Golf Wagon has won the

'2014 iF gold award'. The highly

cherished product design award

was presented this evening in

Munich to Stefan Wallburg, exte-

rior designer for the Volkswagen

brand.

For 60 years now, the iF product

design award has been a globally

recognised hallmark, honouring

outstanding design achievement.

An international jury made up of

49 design experts had judged the

more than 3,200 entries over re-

cent weeks and rewarded the

Golf Wagon with the sought-after

'iF gold award' in the

'Transportation Design' category.

The gold awards are granted to

the best competition entries in

each of a total of 17 categories.

In its official statement the jury

said: "The Golf Wagon has a very

clean and original design that is

unmistakable and significant for

the brand. The design is so su-

perb because it does not cry out

for any exaggerated emotionali-

ty. Rather it shows how even

with simple means it is possible

to achieve a perfect result in

product design. The car simply

oozes / is quality."

The new Golf Wagon has been on

the market in Germany since last

August and launched locally in

February. The sporty and elegant

all-rounder combines low fuel

consumption with dynamic per-

formance and great flexibility. At

605 litres, for instance, the boot

space is even bigger than that of

its predecessor. The Golf Wagon

is thus the perfect vehicle for

families and active people, who

need a spacious, everyday car for

a diverse array of possible uses.

Volkswagen one-two in

Sweden – Old hand Latvala

pips youngster Mikkelsen

Volkswagen claimed its second one-two of the season at the second round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) and Andreas Mik-kelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/FIN) not only clinched a frenetically celebrated one-two, but also put on an extremely gripping duel for the fans. In difficult conditions at the Rally Sweden – thawing temperatures, snow and rain made for a difficult combination – the Polo R WRC proved to be the fastest car for the second time in a row. 43 of 69 possible top-three times, of which 18 produced stage wins, and a one-two-three at the top of the overall standings for a while – Sweden was once again a happy stomping ground for Volkswagen in 2014.

The team’s Nordic drivers – Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen – were embroiled in a spectacular duel for long periods of the rally, scrapping for every fraction of a second. In the end, they could both consider themselves real winners: Latvala celebrated his ninth WRC victory, the third at the Ral-ly Sweden and the second in Volkswagen colours – and also moved to the top of the Drivers’ Champion-ship in the process. Mikkelsen made his first appearance on the podium at the pinnacle of rallying. World Champi-ons Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) ended the Rally Sweden in sixth place after a mighty fightback, having

previously dropped back to 20th over-all following a rare driver error.

“We are delighted that Jari-Matti Lat-vala’s fine performance this weekend has paid dividends,” said Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer, Volkswagen Board Member for Technical Development. “This win was fully deserved and the result of some intelligent driving. An-dreas Mikkelsen – the junior member of our team – showed in the trickiest of conditions that he has the potential to compete with the best in the world. Sébastien Ogier was a bit unfortunate with his slip-up. Despite this, he was once again the man to beat this week-end, claiming ten stage wins.”

Duel of the weekend: Latvala vs.

Mikkelsen

Finland 13 – Norway 10: the all-Volkswagen duel between Latvala and Mikkelsen had fans on the edge of their seats for pretty much the entire Rally Sweden. It took until Saturday’s final leg to decide which of the two team-mates would emerge victorious from their gripping head-to-head. The morning started with just 3.6 seconds separating the old hand and the youngster. Only after a slight mistake

from Andreas Mikkelsen in extremely difficult conditions did Jari-Matti Lat-vala feel the pressure fall from his shoulders. Mikkelsen lost crucial sec-onds after spinning on the 18th special stage. A glance at the statistics reveals the extent, to which the Volkswagen drivers dominated the Rally Sweden: Latvala made 18 appearances in the top three, Mikkelsen 13. Jari-Matti Lat-vala also picked up the 300th stage win of his career in Sweden.

Fightback of the weekend: Ogier

recovers to claim sixth

Steered in a fraction of a second too late, skidded into a snow wall, but able to fight on thanks to a little help from the fans – Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia experienced both faces of the Rally Sweden on Friday. Although their mistake cost them the lead, the World Championship winning duo in the Polo R WRC were able to continue at the only snow rally of the season. A run of stage wins saw them recover from 20th place to earn valuable cham-pionship points. In total, Ogier/Ingrassia set the fastest time on ten stages.

Valuable commodity: looking after

studded tyres the key to success

A thin layer of ice and snow on the first loop, followed by gravel that has been raked to the surface on the second loop – not exactly ideal conditions for the standard studded tyres used at the Rally Sweden. Wherever the gravel had risen to the surface, the drivers risked breaking the tungsten spikes on the Michelin “X-ice North 2” tyres should they push too hard. Both Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen made good use of their 28 tyres during their battle for overall victory. They both set off on Saturday’s final two loops with six brand-new Michelin tyres.

Lead extended – Volkswagen Motor-sport tops the Manufacturers’

Championship

The lead increased by twelve points: Volkswagen leads the Manufacturers’ Championship after the second win of the year. The works team, consisting of Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Lat-vala, currently has 72 points to its name – 16 more than Citroën and 50 ahead of M-Sport-Ford.

Power Stage yields two bonus

points for Jari-Matti Latvala

Victory in Sweden saw Jari-Matti Lat-vala move to the top of the World Championship for the first time in his career, and as if that were not enough, he also picked up bonus points on the Power Stage. Second place behind Ford driver Mads Østberg on the clos-ing special stage, on which extra points are awarded to the fastest three cars, mean Latvala now has 40 points to his name. He is followed five points back in second place by World Cham-pion Sébastien Ogier. Andreas Mikkel-sen is fourth in the Drivers’ Champion-ship with 24 points. Quotes after day three of the Rally

Sweden

Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #1

“Sixth place is the conciliation prize for us. Sure, Julian and I would love to have repeated the success of last year, but after my mistake on Friday, eight points are the best we could have hoped for. We made a clean run of it on the final day, despite the incredibly slippery conditions. Also, by setting 10

fastest times here we’ve demonstrated that we will be a force to be reckoned with again next year, since Rally Swe-den is one of my absolutely favourite events in the WRC calendar. Congrat-ulations to Jari-Matti and Miikka, who put in a fantastic performance, just as Andreas and Mikko did. The team has another reason to celebrate and in the World Championship it is always excit-ing.”

Jari-Matti Latvala, Volkswagen Polo R WRC#2

“It’s amazing to have won the Rally Sweden for the third time. This victory is especially important to me as I won my first ever WRC rally here in 2008. Clinching the victory was no easy task, the difficult conditions and solid times from my team-mates meant that Miikka and I had concentrate fully and give it our best. Due to the thawing snow we drove over a lot of gravel and had to be shrewd when it came to sparing the tyres.

Andreas Mikkelsen didn’t make it easy yesterday, he drove a strong rally and fully deserves to be on the podium. It was brilliant that we were allowed to fight in out fairly and weren’t obliged to bow to team orders and is unique in

this format. It’s not down to this that I feel very content at Volkswagen.”

Andreas Mikkelsen, Volkswagen Polo R WRC#9

“First time on the podium! I have longed so much for this result. To have achieved it practically on my doorstep is awesome! The final day here in Sweden was once again a real chal-lenge. With the slushy snow and ex-posed gravel, which characterised the second loop, it was certainly not easy. I had a whiff of victory for long parts of the race – which felt great.

After a small mistake, I wasn’t able to keep up the pressure on team-mate, Jari-Matti Latvala. Instead, I turned my concentration on maintaining the gap between myself and Mads Østberg in

third place and in the end it was a close run thing. However, all said and done we thoroughly deserved our sec-ond place. To have made this break-through in the world championship here at Rally Sweden, with some of the toughest conditions in years, makes me feel particularly proud. My team, my co-driver Mikko Markkula and I have earned a beer or two today. We will celebrate in style tonight.”

And then there was ... ... Sébastien Ogier’s new record. The Volkswagen works driver travelled a massive 41 metres through the air be-fore landing after the infamous “Colin’s Crest” jump – in doing so he eclipsed the previous best, set by American Ken Block, by a full four metres. And then there was also ... ... Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, who paid the Volkswagen team a spontane-ous visit on Saturday afternoon. As Duke of Värmland, where the Rally Sweden is held, the man third in line to the Swedish throne knows his way around more than just the local geog-raphy. Last year, Carl Philip of Sweden lined up at the Rally Sweden himself, taking part in a support class at the wheel of a vintage Porsche 911.

World Premiere of Rallycross-

Beetle in Chicago

Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross

Team presented

GRC Beetle with more than 560 hp

and all-wheel-drive

Volkswagen Beetle will enter motor-sports in the U.S. this summer. At the Chicago Auto Show today, Volkswagen of America presents a Rallycross-Beetle with all-wheel-drive and a TSI engine that delivers more than 560 hp (412 kW).

Volkswagen partners with Andretti Au-tosport to form the Volkswagen Andret-ti Rallycross team, running two cars in the series for drivers Tanner Foust and Scott Speed. The team will initially compete this season with modified Polo rally cars, built on the chassis that won the 2013 World Rally Champion-ship for drivers and manufacturers, and will switch during the season to the fearsome GRC Beetle shown in Chicago.

This all-wheel-drive rallycross car is the ultimate expression of the third-generation Beetle and will feature more than 560 horsepower from its turbocharged and direct-injection TSI engine.

Rallycross is the fastest growing form of motorsports in the U.S., attracting big crowds at venues across the coun-try as well as live TV coverage. Cars are pitted against each other and the clock in a series of heats on a closed course that’s usually a mixture of dirt and pavement, with jumps of 20 me-ters and more.

Marklund Motorsport Volkswagen Polo RX Supercars at round one of the World Rallycross Championship in Montalegre (P) on 03 May.

“Rallycross is attracting ever-increasing levels of attention in Europe and overseas and is one of the fastest growing motorsport disciplines out there,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “The races are short and sweet, the cars are spectac-ular and look almost like factory mod-

els. Marklund Motorsport ranks among the most ambitious independent teams and has single-handedly developed the Polo for the 2014 FIA RallyCross World Championship. Jan Marklund’s professional approach was our condi-tion before embarking on this collabo-ration, in which Volkswagen Motor-sport provides the team experience and expertise from rally sport. In Too-mas Heikkinen and Anton Marklund they have one of the strongest driver pairs in this championship and we are already excited about seeing them be-hind the wheel of the Polo RX Super-car.”

Jan Marklund, Marklund Motorsport team owner, added: “Volkswagen’s pedigree in motorsport is there for every-one to see, there is no better manufacturer for us to be partnered with than the cur-rent WRC champions. Volkswagen is looking to make an immediate global impact in the world of Rally-cross and I’m happy that Marklund Motorsport is their chosen partner for the FIA

World Rallycross Championship. We will now continue the hard work we have put in so far this pre-season and with the support of Volkswagen we are very much looking forward to delivering results from the first race of the new season.”

FIA World Rallycross Managing Direc-tor, Martin Anayi added: “It is a real testament to the huge strides Marklund Motorsport has made in the FIA World Rallycross Championship to attract a partner of the calibre of Volkswagen. A partnership with Marklund Motorsport shows that we have some very profes-sional teams already participating in our Championship and it is enormously encouraging to the Championship’s rapidly growing reputation and credibil-ity. I am sure that Volkswagen’s dedi-cation and professionalism combined with Marklund’s rallycross expertise, the team will be a serious contender this year. We look forward to an excit-ing season ahead.”
