I testi delle meditazioni e delle preghiere della "Via Crucis" presieduta da Giovanni Paolo II al Colosseo sono tratti dal libro "Meditations and Devotions" del Card. John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

PREGHIERA INIZIALE

 

Nel nome del Padre e del Figlio e dello Spirito Santo.

Primo Venerdì Santo del Terzo Millennio. È calata la sera. Alta nel cielo splende la luna. I fedeli di Roma e innumerevoli pellegrini si sono riuniti per percorrere con Gesù il cammino della Croce:  il Colosseo, insigne monumento dell'Impero Romano, è ora Statio Urbis et Orbis.

Via Crucis, cammino di solidarietà. Gesù, il Figlio di Dio, nato da Donna, è solidale con i suoi fratelli - umanità sofferente e smarrita -:  nel suo passo, il passo dell'esule e del deportato, dell'uomo deluso che vaga incerto, il passo malfermo del bambino, del malato, dell'anziano, del condannato che si avvia al patibolo. Ma Gesù, camminando verso il luogo del Cranio, trascina l'umanità verso lo splendore della Gloria.

OPENING PRAYER

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The first Good Friday of the third millennium. Night has fallen. The moon shines high in the sky. The faithful of Rome and countless pilgrims have gathered to walk with Jesus along the Way of the Cross. At the Colosseum, splendid monument of the Roman Empire, now we celebrate the Statio Urbis et Orbis.

Via Crucis, a journey of solidarity. Jesus, the Son of God, born of woman, is one with his brothers and sisters - humanity, suffering and bewildered -:  in their steps, the steps of exiles and deportees, of the disillusioned who wander aimlessly, in the halting steps of children, the sick, the elderly, of the condemned who approach the place of their execution. Yet Jesus, as he walks towards the Place of the Skull, is leading humanity towards the splendour of Glory.

Via Crucis, a journey of discipleship. Jesus, the one Teacher, has said:  "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross

Gesù, il solo Maestro, ha detto:  "Se qualcuno vuol venire dietro a me rinneghi se stesso, prenda la sua croce e mi segua" (Mt 16, 24). Mi segua sempre. Mi segua al Calvario. Presso la Croce, quindi, sono la Madre, la prima discepola, e il Discepolo amato. Salendo il Calvario, Gesù sa di avviarsi verso la cattedra suprema,

per confermare con il dono di Sé il suo insegnamento:  "Nessuno ha un amore più grande di questo:  dare la vita per i propri amici" (Gv 15, 13).

Via Crucis, cammino regale e sacerdotale. Gesù, consacrato dallo Spirito, è Re e Sacerdote. Sulla via del Calvario tuttavia non porta alcuna insegna regale, né indossa alcuna veste sacerdotale. Eppure sa che inizia il suo Regno. Nella sola forma a lui possibile:  Egli regna con la forza dell'amore. Ora inizia il suo Sacerdozio:  Agnello mite e innocente offre se stesso, vittima di espiazione per il peccato del mondo.

Via Crucis, cammino di speranza. Nel tramonto è già la sicurezza dell'alba. Al vespro della vita, Gesù è certo dell'amore del Padre, spera contro l'evidenza della disfatta; è sicuro che dal grembo oscuro della terra risorgerà quale "stella radiosa del mattino" (Ap 22, 16). Gesù sa che, camminando verso la morte, affretta il passo verso la risurrezione.

Via Crucis, cammino di pienezza:  di dolore e di amore senza limiti, di totale abbassamento e di suprema esaltazione; pienezza dello Spirito,

and follow me" (Mt 16: 24). Follow me always. Follow me to Calvary. Beneath the Cross stand Mary, the first disciple, and the Beloved Disciple. As he ascends towards Calvary, Jesus knows that he is about to teach his greatest lesson and to confirm that teaching by the gift of his very self:  "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (Jn 15: 13).

Via Crucis, a priestly and royal journey. Jesus, consecrated by the Spirit, is King and Priest. But on the way to Calvary he holds no sceptre, he wears no priestly garb. Yet he knows that his Kingdom is beginning.

In the only form possible to him:  he reigns with the power of love. Now begins his Priesthood:  the meek and innocent Lamb offers himself, as an expiating victim for the sin of the world. Via Crucis, a journey of hope. At nightfall the certainty of dawn is already present. In the twilight of his life, Jesus is sure of the Father's love, he hopes in spite of the evidence of failure; he is sure that from the dark womb of the earth he will rise as the "bright morning star" (Rv 22: 16). As he walks to his death, Jesus knows that he is hastening towards the resurrection.

Via Crucis, a journey of fullness:  of pain and unbounded love, of total abasement and sublime exaltation; fullness of the Spirit, who streams forth from the wounded side

che sgorga dal costato aperto del Salvatore, qual fiume di vita e di grazia; pienezza di perdono e di misericordia, di riconciliazione e di pace. Ora dell'"alto grido" (Mc 15, 37) e del silenzio del cosmo, che piange morto il suo Creatore. Ora dell'amore obbediente:  "Padre, tutto è compiuto" (cfr Gv 19, 30). Ora del capo chino e dell'operante riposo. E, nel cuore della Madre, ora della pietà immensa e della trepida attesa.

Dio onnipotente, fortificami con la tua forza, consolami con la tua pace, rischiarami con la bellezza del tuo Volto, illuminami con la luce che scaturisce dal tuo increato splendore, purificami con il profumo della tua ineffabile santità, immergimi in te perché io beva all'acqua viva che fluisce da te, Padre Santo, e dal Figlio tuo e dal tuo coeterno Amore. O mio Signore, tu sei tutto per me, tu solo mi basti. O mio Signore Gesù, il tuo Sangue basta per il mondo intero. Tu basti per me e per l'intera stirpe di Adamo. O mio Signore Gesù, fa' che la tua Croce sia sufficiente per tutta l'umanità. Fa' che sia efficace. Fa' che sia efficace per me più di tutti, per evitare che io abbia tutto in abbondanza senza portar nessun frutto a perfezione.* Amen.

PRIMA STAZIONEGesù è condannato a morte

Dal Vangelo secondo Matteo 27, 22-23. 26

of the Saviour, as a river of life and grace; fullness of forgiveness and mercy, of reconciliation and peace. It is the hour of the "loud cry" (Mk 15: 37) and the silence of the cosmos, which mourns the death of its Creator. The hour of the bowed head and the laborious rest. And, in the heart of his Mother, the hour of immense compassion and anxious expectation.

O mighty God, strengthen me with Thy strength, console me with Thy everlasting peace, soothe me with the beauty of Thy countenance; enlighten me with Thy uncreated brightness; purify me with the fragrance of Thy ineffable holiness. Bathe me in Thyself, and give me to drink, as far as mortal man may ask, of the rivers of grace which flow from the Father and the Son, the grace of Thy consubstantial, co-eternal Love.

O my all-sufficient Lord, Thou only sufficest! Thy blood is sufficient for the whole world. As Thou are sufficient for me, so Thou art sufficient for the entire race of Adam.

O my Lord Jesus, let Thy Cross be more than sufficient for them. Let it be effectual! Let it be effectual for me more than all, lest I have all and abound, yet bring no fruit to perfection.* Amen.

FIRST STATION

Disse loro Pilato:  "Che farò dunque di Gesù chiamato il Cristo?". Tutti risposero:  "Sia crocifisso!". Ed egli aggiunse:  "Ma che male ha fatto?". Essi allora urlarono:  "Sia crocifisso!". Allora rilasciò loro Barabba e, dopo aver fatto flagellare Gesù, lo consegnò ai soldati perché fosse crocifisso.

Il Santo, Giusto e Verace è stato giudicato da peccatori e condannato a morte. Ma essi, mentre lo giudicavano, erano indotti, loro malgrado, ad assolverlo. Giuda, che lo ha tradito, dice:  "Ho peccato perché ho tradito sangue innocente". Pilato, che ha emesso la sentenza, proclama:  "Sono innocente del sangue di questo giusto", e riversa la colpa sui Giudei. Il Centurione, che lo ha visto crocifisso, esclama:  "Veramente quest'uomo era giusto".

Signore, sei sempre giusto quando parli e vinci quando sei giudicato. Tanto più nell'ultimo giorno, allorché gli uomini "volgeranno lo sguardo a colui che hanno trafitto". E lui, condannato nella debolezza, giudicherà il mondo con potenza, e persino coloro che saranno condannati riconosceranno di essere stati giudicati con giustizia. A te, Gesù, giusto Giudice, l'onore e la gloria nei secoli senza fine. Amen.

SECONDA STAZIONE Gesù è caricato della Croce

Dal Vangelo secondo Matteo 27, 27-31

Allora i soldati del governatore condussero Gesù nel pretorio e gli radunarono attorno tutta la coorte. Spogliatolo, gli misero addosso un manto

Jesus is condemned to deathMt 27: 22-23, 26

Pilate said to them, "Then what am I to do with Jesus, the so-called Messiah?" "Crucify him!", they all cried. He said, "Why, what crime has he committed?". But they only shouted the louder, "Crucify him!". At that, he released Barabbas to them. Jesus, however, he first had scourged; then he handed him over to be crucified.

The Holy, Just, and True was judged by sinners, and put to death. Yet, while they judged, they were compelled to acquit Him. Judas, who betrayed Him, said, "I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood". Pilate, who sentenced Him, said, "I am innocent of the blood of this just person", and threw the guilt upon the Jews. The Centurion who saw Him crucified said, "Indeed this was a just man".

Thus ever, O Lord, Thou art justified in Thy words, and dost overcome when Thou are judged. And so, much more; at the last day "They shall look on Him whom they pierced"; and He who was condemned in weakness shall judge the world in power, and even those who are condemned will confess their judgement is just.

SECOND STATIONJesus receives His Cross

Mt 27: 27-31

The procurator's soldiers took Jesus inside the praetorium and collected the whole cohort around him. They stripped off his clothes and wrapped him in a scarlet military cloak.

scarlatto e, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo, con una canna nella destra; poi mentre gli si inginocchiavano davanti, lo schernivano:  "Salve, re dei Giudei!". E sputandogli addosso, gli tolsero di mano la canna e lo percuotevano sul capo. Dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono del mantello, gli fecero indossare i suoi vestiti e lo portarono via per crocifiggerlo.

Gesù sostiene il mondo intero con il suo potere divino, perché è Dio; ma quel peso è meno gravoso di quanto lo sia la Croce, che i nostri peccati hanno preparato per lui. I nostri peccati gli sono costati questa umiliazione. Egli ha dovuto prendere su di sé la nostra natura, apparire fra noi come uomo, e offrire per noi un grande sacrificio. Ha dovuto affrontare una vita di sofferenza e sopportare la passione e infine la morte per noi.

O Signore Dio onnipotente, che reggi il peso dell'universo senza stancarti, e hai preso su di te il carico dei nostri peccati, benché questo, sì, ti stanchi, come sostenti i nostri corpi con la tua provvidenza, così salva le nostre anime con il tuo sangue prezioso. A te, Gesù, sacerdote e vittima, la lode e la gloria nei secoli. Amen.

TERZA STAZIONE Gesù cade per la prima volta

Dal libro del profeta Isaia 53, 4-6

Egli si è caricato delle nostre sofferenze, si è addossato i nostri dolori

Weaving a crown out of thorns they fixed it on his head, and stuck a reed in his right hand. Then they began to mock him, dropping to their knees before him, saying, "All hail, King of the Jews!". They also spat at him. Afterward they took hold of the reed and kept striking him on the head. Finally, when they had finished making a fool of him, they stripped him of the cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him off to crucifixion.

Jesus supports the whole world by His divine power, for He is God; but the weight was less heavy than was the Cross which our sins hewed out for Him. Our sins cost Him this humiliation. He had to take on Him our nature, and to appear among us as a man, and to offer up for us a great sacrifice. He had to pass a life in penance, and to endure His passion and death at the end of it.

O Lord God Almighty, who dost bear the weight of the whole world without weariness, who bore the weight of all our sins, though they wearied Thee, as Thou art the Preserver of our bodies by Thy Providence, so be Thou the Saviour of our souls by Thy precious blood.

THIRD STATIONJesus falls under the weight of the Cross

the first time Is 53: 4-6

Yet it was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, While we thought of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses,

e noi lo giudicavamo castigato, percosso da Dio e umiliato. Egli è stato trafitto per i nostri delitti, schiacciato per le nostre iniquità. Il castigo che ci dà salvezza si è abbattuto su di lui; per le sue piaghe noi siamo stati guariti. Noi tutti eravamo sperduti come un gregge, ognuno di noi seguiva la sua strada; il Signore fece ricadere su di lui l'iniquità di noi tutti.

Alle origini Satana cadde dal cielo; cadde a causa della giusta sentenza del Creatore, contro il quale si era ribellato. Quando gli riuscì di coinvolgere l'uomo nella sua ribellione, e il Creatore venne a salvare la discendenza di Adamo, allora si presentò per Satana la sua breve ora di trionfo, ed egli ne profittò fino in fondo. Quando il Santo si fece uomo e fu in suo potere, Satana, nella sua malvagia volontà di vendetta, decise che, come lui era stato abbattuto dal braccio dell'Onnipotente, così a sua volta gli avrebbe inferto un duro colpo. Per questo Gesù cade così presto a terra.

O buon Signore, per questa tua prima caduta

solleva dal peccato tutti noi, che siamo caduti così miseramente sotto il suo potere. A te, Gesù, caduto sotto il peso della croce, la nostra lode e il nostro amore nei secoli. Amen.

QUARTA STAZIONE Gesù incontra sua Madre

Dal Vangelo secondo Luca 2, 34-35.51

Simeone parlò a Maria, sua madre:  "Egli è qui per la rovina e la risurrezione di molti in Israele, segno di contraddizione

crushed for our sins; Upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, each following his own way; But the Lord laid upon him the guilt of us all.

Satan fell from heaven in the beginning; by the just  sentence  of  his  Creator  he  fell, against whom he had rebelled. And when he had succeeded in gaining man to join him in his rebellion, and his Maker came to save him, then his brief hour of triumph came, and he made the most of it. When the Holiest had taken flesh, and was in his power, then in his revenge and malice he determined, as he himself  had  been  struck  down  by  the Almighty arm, to strike in turn a heavy blow at Him who struck him. Therefore it was that Jesus fell down so suddenly.

O dear Lord, by this Thy first fall raise us all out of sin, who have so miserably fallen under its power.

FOURTH STATION Jesus meets His Mother

Lk 2: 34-35, 51

Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother:  "This child is destined to be the downfall and the rise of many in Israel, a sign that will be opposed, and you yourself shall be pierced with a sword, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare".... His mother meanwhile pondered all these things

perché siano svelati i pensieri di molti cuori. E anche a te una spada trafiggerà l'anima"...

Sua madre serbava tutte queste cose nel suo cuore.

Non c'è fase della vicenda terrena di Gesù in cui Maria non abbia avuto la sua parte. Alcuni, che si professano servi di Cristo, ritengono che il compito di lei sia finito nel momento in cui ha dato alla luce Gesù. Dopo questo non le sarebbe restato che scomparire ed essere dimenticata. Noi non pensiamo così della madre di Cristo. Ella ha portato Gesù neonato al Tempio; lo ha sollevato sulle sue braccia quando i Magi sono venuti ad adorarlo. È fuggita con lui in Egitto, lo ha accompagnato a Gerusalemme all'età di dodici anni. Con lui è vissuta per trent'anni a Nazareth, e con lui è stata alla festa nuziale di Cana. Anche quando Gesù l'ha lasciata per iniziare la sua predicazione, Maria non lo ha perso di vista. E ora si fa presente a lui mentre percorre faticosamente la Via Santa con la croce sulle spalle.

Dolce madre, concedici di pensare anche a te quando pensiamo a Gesù, e quando lo preghiamo restaci accanto con la tua potente intercessione. A te, santa Maria, madre intrepida, trafitta dalla spada del dolore, la nostra lode memore e grata. Amen.

QUINTA STAZIONE Gesù è aiutato dal Cireneo a portare la

Croce Dal Vangelo secondo Luca 23, 26-27

Mentre lo conducevano via, presero un certo Simone di Cirene che veniva dalla campagna

in her heart.

There is no part of the history of Jesus but Mary has her part in it. There are those who profess to be His servants, who think that her work was ended when she bore Him; and after that she had nothing to do but disappear and be forgotten. But we, O Lord, do not so think of Thy Mother. She brought the tender infant into the Temple, she lifted Him up in her arms when the wise men came to adore Him. She fled with Him to Egypt, she took Him up to Jerusalem when He was 12 years old. He lived with her at Nazareth for 30 years. She was with Him at the marriage-feast. Even when He had left her to preach, she hovered about Him. And now she shows herself as He toils along the Sacred Way with His cross on his shoulders.

Sweet Mother, let us ever think of thee when we think of Jesus, and when we pray to Him, ever aid us by thy powerful intercession.

FIFTH STATION Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry the

CrossLk 23: 26-27

As they led him away, they laid hold of one Simon the Cyrenean who was coming in from the fields. They put a crossbeam on Simon's shoulder for him to carry along behind Jesus. A great crowd of people followed him, including women who beat their breasts and lamented over him.

Jesus could bear His Cross alone, did He so will; but He permits Simon to help Him, in order to remind us that we must take part in

e gli misero addosso la croce da portare dietro a Gesù. Lo seguiva una gran folla di popolo e di donne che si battevano il petto e facevano lamenti su di lui.

Gesù avrebbe potuto portare la Croce da solo, se così avesse voluto; ma egli permette a Simone di aiutarlo, per ricordarci che dobbiamo prendere parte alle sue sofferenze e collaborare alla sua opera. Il suo merito è infinito, eppure egli accetta che noi, suo popolo, aggiungiamo il nostro merito al suo. La santità della beata Vergine, il sangue dei Martiri, le preghiere e le penitenze dei Santi, le opere buone di tutti i fedeli, prendono parte a quell'opera che, tuttavia, anche senza questi contributi umani sarebbe perfetta. Egli ci salva con il suo sangue; ma ci salva anche attraverso di noi e con noi.

Amato Signore, insegnaci a soffrire con te; fa' che soffrire per amor tuo sia dolce per noi, e santifica con i tuoi meriti ogni nostro patimento. A te, Gesù, forza e sostegno dell'universo, ogni onore e gloria nei secoli senza fine. Amen.

SESTA STAZIONE La Veronica asciuga il volto di Gesù

Dal libro del profeta Isaia 53, 2-3

Non ha apparenza né bellezza per attirare i nostri sguardi, non splendore per provare in lui diletto. Disprezzato e reietto dagli uomini, uomo dei dolori che ben conosce il patire, come uno davanti al quale ci si copre la faccia.

His sufferings, and have a fellowship in His work. His merit is infinite, yet He condescends to let His people add their merit to it. The sanctity of the Blessed Virgin, the blood of the Martyrs, the prayers and penances of the Saints, the good deeds of all the faithful, take part in that work which, nevertheless, is perfect without them. He saves us by His blood, but it is through and with ourselves that He saves us.

Dear Lord, teach us to suffer with Thee, make it pleasant to us to suffer for Thy sake, and sanctify all our sufferings by the merits of Thy own.

SIXTH STATION The face of Jesus is wiped by Veronica

Is 53: 2-3

There was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him, nor appearance that would attract us to him. He was spurned and avoided by men, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity, One of those from whom men hide their faces.

Jesus let the pious woman carry off an impression of His Sacred Countenance, which was to last to future ages. He did this to remind us all, that His image must ever be impressed on all our hearts. Whoever we are, in whatever part of the earth, in whatever age of the world, Jesus must live in our hearts. We may differ from each other in many things, but in this we must all agree, if we are His true children. We must bear about with us the napkin of St Veronica; we must ever meditate upon His death and resurrection, we must ever imitate His divine excellence, according to our measure.

Gesù ha permesso ad una donna pietosa di conservare impressi su un lino i lineamenti del suo sacro volto, perché restassero per le età future. Questo ha voluto per ricordare a tutti noi che la sua immagine deve rimanere sempre impressa nei nostri cuori. Chiunque noi siamo, in qualsiasi regione della terra o epoca della storia noi viviamo, Gesù deve sempre dimorare nel nostro cuore. Possiamo avere opinioni diverse l'uno dall'altro su molte cose, ma su questo dobbiamo tutti convenire, se siamo suoi discepoli fedeli. Dobbiamo portare con noi il lino della Veronica; dobbiamo sempre meditare la morte e risurrezione di Cristo e sempre imitare, nella misura che ci è dato, la sua divina perfezione.

O Signore, fa' che il nostro volto sia sempre gradito ai tuoi occhi, non imbrattato dal peccato, ma lavato e reso luminoso dal tuo sangue prezioso. A te, Gesù, splendore della gloria del Padre, il nostro amore fedele e grato. Amen.

SETTIMA STAZIONE Gesù cade per la seconda volta

Dal libro delle Lamentazioni 3, 1-2.9.16

Io sono l'uomo che ha provato la miseria sotto la sferza della sua ira. Egli mi ha guidato, mi ha fatto camminare nelle tenebre e non nella luce... Ha sbarrato le mie vie con blocchi di pietra, ha ostruito i miei sentieri... Mi ha spezzato con la sabbia i denti, mi ha steso nella polvere.

Satana conobbe una seconda caduta, quando nostro Signore venne sulla terra. Già da lungo tempo egli aveva usurpato il dominio

Lord, let our countenances be ever pleasing in Thy sight, not defiled with sin, but bathed and washed white in Thy precious blood.

SEVENTH STATION Jesus falls the second time

Lam 3: 1-2, 9, 16

I am a man who knows affliction from the rod of his anger, one whom he has led and forced to walk in darkness, not in the light.... He has blocked my ways with fitted stones, and turned my paths aside.... He has broken my teeth with gravel, pressed my face in the dust.

Satan had a second fall, when our Lord came upon earth. By that time he had usurped the dominion of the whole world - and he called himself its king. And he dared to take up the Holy Saviour in his arms, and show Him all kingdoms, and blasphemously promise to give them to Him, His Maker, if He would adore him. Jesus answered, "Begone, Satan!" - and Satan fell down from the high mountain. And Jesus bare witness to it when He said, "I saw Satan, as lightning, falling from heaven". The Evil One remembered this second defeat, and so now he smote down the Innocent Lord a second time, now that he had Him in his power.

O dear Lord, teach us to suffer with Thee, and not be afraid of Satan's buffetings, when they come on us from resisting him.

EIGHTH STATION

del mondo intero e se ne considerava il re. Egli osò allora prendere sulle sue braccia il santo Salvatore e mostrargli tutti i regni, e empiamente promettergli di darli a lui, suo Creatore, se lo avesse adorato. Gesù rispose:  "Vattene, Satana!", e Satana precipitò giù dall'alto del monte. Gesù rese testimonianza di questo quando disse:  "Ho visto Satana cadere dal cielo come folgore". Il Malvagio si ricordò di questa seconda sconfitta, e gettò a terra per una seconda volta, ora che lo aveva in suo potere, l'innocente Signore.

Amato Signore, insegnaci a soffrire con te e a non temere i colpi di Satana, quando sono conseguenza della resistenza che gli opponiamo. A te, Gesù, sostegno della nostra debolezza, la lode pura e il canto amico. Amen.

OTTAVA STAZIONE Gesù incontra le donne di Gerusalemme

che piangono su di lui Dal Vangelo secondo Luca 23, 28-31

The women of Jerusalem mourn for our Lord

Lk 23: 28-31

Jesus turned to them and said:  "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep for yourselves and for your children. The days are coming when they will say, "Happy are the sterile, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed'. Then they will begin saying to the mountains,

"Fall on us', and to the hills, "Cover us'. If they do these things in the green wood, what will happen in the dry?".

Ever since the prophecy of old time, that the Saviour of man was to be born of a woman of the stock of Abraham, the Jewish women had desired to bear Him. Yet, now that He was really come, how different, as the Gospel tells us, was the event from what they had expected. He said to them "that the days were coming when they should say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the breasts which have not given suck".

Ah, Lord, we know not what is good for us, and what is bad. We cannot foretell the future, nor do we know, when Thou comest to visit us, in what form Thou wilt come. And therefore we leave it all to Thee. Do Thou Thy good pleasure to us and in us. Let us ever look at Thee, and do Thou look upon us, and give us the grace of Thy bitter Cross and Passion, and console us in Thy own way

Signore, noi non sappiamo ciò che è bene per noi e ciò che è male. Non possiamo prevedere il futuro; non sappiamo, quando verrai a visitarci, in quale forma verrai. E perciò noi affidiamo tutto a te. Agisci con noi e in noi secondo il tuo beneplacito. Fa' che il nostro sguardo sia rivolto sempre a te, e a noi tu guarda sempre; donaci la grazia della tua Croce e Passione amara, e consolaci nella maniera che tu sai e nell'ora che tu vuoi. A te, Gesù, nato dalla Vergine Figlia di Sion,

il nostro grazie commosso e umile. Amen.

NONA STAZIONE Gesù cade per la terza volta

Dal libro delle Lamentazioni 3, 27-32

È bene per l'uomo portare il giogo fin dalla giovinezza. NINTH STATION Jesus falls the third time

Lam 3: 27-32

It is good for a man to bear the yoke from his youth. Let him sit alone and in silence, when it is laid upon him. Let him put his mouth to the dust; there may yet be hope. Let him offer his cheek to be struck, let him be filled with disgrace. For the Lord's rejection does not last forever; Though he punishes, he takes pity, in the abundance of his mercies.

Satan will have a third and final fall at the end of the world, when he will be shut up for good in the everlasting fiery prison. He knew this was to be his end - he has no hope, but despair only. He knew that no suffering which he could at that moment inflict upon the Saviour of men would avail to rescue himself from that inevitable doom. But, in horrible rage and hatred, he determined to insult and torture while he could the great King whose throne is everlasting. Therefore a third time he smote Him down fiercely to the earth.

O Jesus, Only-begotten Son of God, the Word Incarnate, we adore with fear and trembling and deep thankfulness Thy awful humiliation, that Thou who art the Highest, should have permitted Thyself, even for one hour, to be the sport and prey of the Evil One.

TENTH STATION Jesus is stripped of His garments

DECIMA STAZIONE Gesù è spogliato delle vesti

Dal Vangelo secondo Matteo 27, 33-36

Giunti a un luogo detto Golgota, che significa luogo del cranio, gli diedero da bere vino mescolato con fiele; ma egli, assaggiatolo, non ne volle bere. Dopo averlo quindi crocifisso, si spartirono le sue vesti tirandole a sorte. E sedutisi, gli facevano la guardia.

Mt 27: 33-36

Upon arriving at a site called Golgotha, a name which means Skull Place, they gave him a drink of wine flavoured with gall, which he tasted but refused to drink. When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among them by casting lots; then they sat down there and kept watch over him.

Jesus would give up everything of this world, before He left it. He exercised the most perfect poverty. When He left the Holy House of Nazareth, and went out to preach, He had not where to lay His head. He lived on the poorest food, and on what was given to Him by those who loved and served Him. And therefore He chose a death in which not even His clothes were left to Him. He parted with what seemed most necessary, and even a part of Him, by the law of human nature since the fall.

Grant us in like manner, O dear Lord, to care nothing for anything on earth, and to bear the loss of all things, and to endure even shame, reproach, contempt, and mockery, rather than that Thou shalt be ashamed of us at the last day.

ELEVENTH STATION Jesus is nailed to the Cross

Mk 15: 25-27

It was about nine in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription proclaiming his offence read:  "The King of the Jews". With him they crucified two insurgents,

amavano e lo servivano. Ha scelto perciò una morte nella quale nemmeno le vesti gli sono state lasciate. Si è separato anche da ciò che, per legge di natura dopo la colpa originale, sembra più necessario e quasi parte dell'essere umano.

Concedi anche a noi, o buon Signore, di non affannarci per cosa alcuna sulla terra,

di sopportare la perdita di tutto, e di subire persino vergogna, riprovazione, disprezzo e scherno, purché tu non abbia a vergognarti di noi nell'ultimo giorno. A te Gesù, vestito di luce come un manto, onore, e gloria, sapienza nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

UNDICESIMA STAZIONE Gesù è inchiodato sulla Croce

Dal Vangelo secondo Marco 15, 25-27

Erano le nove del mattino, quando lo crocifissero:  e l'iscrizione con il motivo della condanna diceva:  il re dei Giudei. Con lui crocifissero anche due ladroni, uno alla sua destra e uno alla sinistra.

Con chiodi acuminati Gesù è trafitto mani e piedi. I suoi occhi sono velati di sangue sotto le palpebre gonfie e le sopracciglia livide per i colpi dei carnefici. La bocca è saziata di aceto e fiele, il capo stretto da una corona di spine pungenti. Il cuore è trapassato da una lancia. Tutti i suoi sensi sono colpiti e crocifissi, al fine di offrire espiazione per ogni genere di umano peccato.

O Gesù,

one at his right and one at his left.

Jesus is pierced through each hand and each foot with a sharp nail. His eyes are dimmed with blood, and are closed by the swollen lids and livid brows which the blows of His executioners have caused. His mouth is filled with vinegar and gall. His head is encircled by the sharp thorns. His heart is pierced with the spear. Thus, all His senses are mortified and crucified, that He may make atonement for every kind of human sin.

O Jesus, mortify and crucify us with Thee. Let us never sin by hand or foot, by eyes or mouth, or by head or heart. Let all our senses be a sacrifice to Thee; let every member sing Thy praise. Let the sacred blood which flowed from Thy five wounds anoint us with such sanctifying grace that we may die to the world, and live only to Thee.

TWELFTH STATION Jesus dies upon the Cross

Mt 27: 45-47, 50

From noon onward, there was darkness over the whole land until midafternoon. Then toward midafternoon Jesus cried out in a loud tone, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?", that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?". This made some of the bystanders who heard it remark, "He is invoking Elijah!". Once again Jesus cried out in a loud voice, and then gave up his spirit.

"Consummatum est". It is completed - it has

mortifica e crocifiggi noi con te. Fa' che mai pecchiamo con le mani o con i piedi, con gli occhi o con la bocca, con la mente o con il cuore. Che tutti i nostri sensi siano sacrificio offerto a te; che ognuna delle nostre membra canti la tua lode. Fa' che il sacro sangue, che sgorgò dalle tue cinque piaghe, ci inondi di tal grazia santificante che possiamo morire al mondo e vivere solo per te. A te, Gesù, inchiodato sulla Croce, il nostro sguardo per attingere da te grazia e salvezza. Amen.

DODICESIMA STAZIONE Gesù muore sulla Croce

Dal Vangelo secondo Matteo 27, 45-47.50

Da mezzogiorno fino alle tre del pomeriggio si fece buio su tutta la terra. Verso le tre, Gesù gridò a gran voce:  "Elì, Elì, lemà sabactàni?", che significa:  "Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?". Udendo questo, alcuni dei presenti dicevano:  "Costui chiama Elia". E Gesù, emesso un alto grido, spirò.

Consummatum est. Tutto è compiuto, tutto è giunto al suo pieno fine. Il mistero dell'amore di Dio per noi è realizzato. Il prezzo è pagato, e noi siamo redenti. L'eterno Padre ha stabilito di non perdonarci senza un prezzo, per mostrarci una speciale benevolenza. Egli si è degnato di renderci preziosi per lui. Si attribuisce valore a ciò che si acquista pagando. Avrebbe potuto salvarci senza alcun prezzo, con un semplice "fiat" del suo volere. Ma per mostrare il suo amore per noi, egli ha fissato un prezzo; e, se

come to a full end. The mystery of God's love towards us is accomplished. The price is paid, and we are redeemed. The Eternal Father determined not to pardon us without a price, in order to show us especial favour. He condescended to make us valuable to Him. What we buy we put a value on. He might have saved us without a price - by the mere fiat of His will. But to show His love for us He took a price, which, if there was to be a price set upon us at all, if there was any ransom at all to be taken for the guilt of our sins, could be nothing short of the death of His Son in our nature.

O my God and Father, Thou hast valued us so much as to pay the highest of all possible prices for our sinful souls; and shall we not love and choose Thee above all things as the one necessary and one only good?

THIRTEENTH STATION Jesus is laid in the arms of His Blessed

MotherMt 27: 54-55

The centurion and his men who were keeping watch over Jesus were terror-stricken at seeing the earthquake

and all that was happening, and said, "Clearly this was the Son of God!".

Many women were present looking on from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to attend to his needs.

He is Thy property now, O Virgin Mother, once again, for He and the world have met and parted. He went out from Thee to do His Father's work - and He has done and suffered it. Satan and bad men have now no longer

O mio Dio e Padre, tu ci hai stimati talmente da pagare il più alto di tutti i prezzi per le nostre anime di peccatori. Non dovremo noi amarti e sceglierti al di sopra di tutte le cose come il nostro bene unico e necessario? A te, Gesù crocifisso, sapienza e potenza di Dio, ogni onore e gloria nei secoli eterni. Amen.

TREDICESIMA STAZIONE Gesù è deposto dalla Croce e consegnato

alla Madre Dal Vangelo secondo Matteo 27, 54-55

Il centurione e quelli che con lui facevano la guardia a Gesù, sentito il terremoto e visto quel che succedeva, furono presi da grande timore e dicevano:  "Davvero costui era Figlio di Dio". C'erano anche là molte donne che stavano a osservare da lontano; esse avevano seguito Gesù dalla Galilea per servirlo.

Ora Gesù è nuovamente tuo, o Vergine Madre, perché, dopo il suo incontro con il mondo, egli e il mondo si sono di nuovo separati. Si era allontanato da te per compiere l'opera del Padre suo. Con sofferenza l'ha portata a termine. Satana e i malvagi non hanno ora più nulla da rivendicare su di lui:  troppo a lungo egli è stato nelle loro mani. Satana l'aveva sollevato sull'alto monte; uomini malvagi lo hanno innalzato sulla

any claim upon Him - too long has He been in their arms. Satan took Him up aloft to the high mountain; evil men lifted Him up upon the Cross.

He has not been in Thy arms, O Mother of God, since He was a child; but now thou hast a claim upon Him, when the world has done its worst. For thou art the all-favoured, all-blessed, all-gracious Mother of the Highest. We rejoice in this great mystery. He has been hidden in thy womb, He has lain in thy bosom, He has been suckled at thy breasts, He has been carried in thy arms; and now that He is dead, He is placed upon thy lap. Virgin Mother of God, pray for us.

FOURTEENTH STATION Jesus is laid in the Sepulchre

Mt 27: 57-60

When evening fell, a wealthy man from Arimathea arrived, Joseph by name. He was another of Jesus' disciples, and had gone to request the body of Jesus. Thereupon Pilate issued an order for its release. Taking the body, Joseph wrapped it in fresh linen and laid it in his own new tomb

which had been hewn from a formation of rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance of the tomb and went away.

Jesus, when He was nearest to His everlasting triumph, seemed to be farthest from triumphing. When He was nearest upon

Croce.

Egli non era più stato fra le tue braccia, o Madre di Dio, da quando era bambino; ma tu puoi rivendicare un diritto su di lui, ora che il mondo ha fatto di lui quanto di peggio poteva. Poiché tu sei ricca di ogni divino favore, la tutta benedetta, colma di ogni grazia, la Madre dell'Altissimo, noi gioiamo di questo grande mistero. Egli è rimasto nascosto nel tuo ventre, ha dormito sul tuo petto, ha succhiato al tuo seno, è stato portato dalle tue braccia, e, ora che è morto, è deposto sul tuo grembo.

Vergine Madre di Dio, intercedi per noi. A te, Madre, donna dalla pietà immensa, che stringi tra le braccia il Figlio, immerso nel sonno della morte, il nostro amore fedele e grato. Amen.

QUATTORDICESIMA STAZIONE Gesù è deposto nel sepolcro

Dal Vangelo secondo Matteo 27, 57-60

Venuta la sera, giunse un uomo ricco di Arimatea, chiamato Giuseppe, il quale era diventato anche lui discepolo di Gesù. Egli andò da Pilato e gli chiese il corpo di Gesù. Allora Pilato ordinò che gli fosse consegnato. Giuseppe, preso il corpo di Gesù, lo avvolse in un candido lenzuolo e lo depose nella sua tomba nuova, che si era fatta scavare nella roccia; rotolata poi una gran pietra sulla porta del sepolcro, se ne andò.

Sulla soglia del suo eterno trionfo, Gesù

entering upon His kingdom, and exercising all power in heaven and earth, He was lying dead in a cave of the rock. He was wrapped round in burying-clothes, and confined within a sepulchre of stone, where He was soon to have a glorified spiritual body, which could penetrate all substances, go to and fro quicker than thought, and was about to ascend on high.

Make us to trust in Thee, O Jesus, that Thou wilt display in us a similar providence. Make us sure, O Lord, that the greater is our distress, the nearer we are to Thee. The more men scorn us, the more Thou dost honour us. The more men insult over us, the higher Thou wilt exalt us. The more they forget us, the more Thou dost keep us in mind. The more they abandon us, the closer Thou wilt bring us to Thyself.

sembra quanto mai lontano dalla vittoria. Prossimo ormai ad entrare nel suo regno per esercitare ogni potere in cielo e sulla terra, egli giace esanime in una cavità della roccia. È avvolto in un lenzuolo funebre e chiuso in un sepolcro di pietra. Egli, però, sta per avere un glorioso corpo spirituale, capace di passare attraverso qualsiasi elemento e di spostarsi più veloce del pensiero; un corpo che ben presto ascenderà in Cielo.

Fa', o Gesù, che ci affidiamo a te, attendendo che tu voglia disporre per noi una sorte simile alla tua. Rendici sicuri, o Signore, che più grande è la nostra abiezione, più siamo vicini a te; più gli uomini ci dileggiano, più tu ci onori; più gli uomini ci disprezzano, più tu ci esalterai; più essi ci dimenticano, più tu ti ricordi di noi; più essi ci abbandonano, più vicino a te ci porterai. Gesù, chicco di frumento deposto nella terra,

in attesa di germogliare quale immagine gloriosa dell'Uomo nuovo, ricevi la nostra lode fervida e perenne. Amen.
