Our research work …
This project is about comparing different aspects of daily life of three generations and will cover a period of about 50 years. We will conduct research on the topic mass media by interviewing grandparents and parents. We will be able to compare the differences/similarities between aspects of daily life of three generations in India and Europe. This
phase of the project includes carrying out research and will start off with writing the report.

1.The most popular forms of
mass media in those times were
newspapers and radio, which
were within the reach of almost
everyone.
2. Well equipped private
libraries in those times were
not available but schools and
colleges were equipped with all
kinds of books.
3.There weren’t any negative
aspects of mass media in those
times as the exposure was limited.
The youth were benefitted as they
acquired knowledge and became
aware of the happenings around
them.
4.They believe that overuse of
internet has had a negative effect
on today's youth as apart from
causing addiction, it makes

People used to spend

unlike the youth of

connected yet

teenagers attending private
schools and colleges.
2.The parents believe that the
new mass media give easy
access to information but lead
to an unhealthy addiction.
3.Reading newspapers, magazines
and books were popular as TV
had started spreading it’s roots.
4.There were negative impacts, the
most common was distraction
from work.

1.Choices as well as reading
habits of people were different.
2.The different magazines read
were Grahshobha, Reader’s
Digest and India Today.
3.The books read were the
series of Nancy Drew, Famous
Five and Hardy Boys.
Conclusion
Due to the popularity of
television, this generation got
more exposure to audio/visual
media which made radio less
popular. Television broadcast
different kinds of programmes
like family dramas and
mythological shows. This helped people
become more attached
to their rich cultural
heritage. Reading
books and newspapers
confined to reading
buffs only.
Grandparents & Parents
[Similarities]
1.Social or interactive media
was not limited. Hence
exchange of views and opinions
with one another was limited as
well.
2.People were anxious to gain
knowledge and took great pains
to equip themselves with
happenings of the
contemporary times.
3.Internet was not available to
either of the generations.
4.Both generations liked to be
updated with the worldly affairs
and at the same time wanted to
be entertained.
5.There was a value attached to
the literary knowledge of a
Grandparents v/s Parents
[Differences]
1.Grandparents read more of
newspapers and less of books.
While parents showed equal
interest in both.
2.In the grandparent
generation, mass media has
only positive effects. Where as
the parental generation
witnessed positive as well as
negative impacts.
3.Grandparents did not have
well equipped private libraries
but because of print technology
becoming affordable to
common man, the parental

of every household in the parental
generation and people enjoyed
watching their favourite shows
unlike the grandparents.
Conclusion
The teenagers of 1950’s who
became parents of teenagers
of 1980’s realized the
importance of mass media in
shaping lives. Thus they
encouraged their children to
make more use of it and
derive benefits for their
future.
Our main question :
To what extent has the role of
mass media changed?
Due to bombardment of
television other mass media
forms viz. magazine and radio
slowly started fading away.
Television and newspaper,
overtook radio and reading
books and magazines became
limited to reading buffs.
