VFP 2012 CAMPAIGNS

4YG=Four Years Go (fouryearsgo.org): This is an environmental campaign that aims to change the path of our planet in the next four years. Volunteers in 4YG projects will spend time talking about the environment and the impact of our individual actions. Together they will come up with actions they can take in their personal lives or countries that will help move our planet in a more sustainable direction. Volunteers in these projects should arrive prepared to share information from their countries, participate in discussions and help create a camp product that shows the work they have done on this theme.

VFP/ALLIANCE 30: This year both Volunteers For Peace and the ALLIANCE are celebrating their 30th anniversaries! Volunteers in VFP/ALLIANCE 30 projects will spend time looking at the history of International Voluntary Service, VFP and the ALLIANCE. They will discuss the need for these projects in the past, present and future and will create wishes for our next 30 years. Volunteers should come prepared to share examples from their countries or lives of how volunteering has impacted them.

MIXED AGE CAMPS: We are seeing more and more older volunteers who want to continue to serve, travel and exchange information. This year VFP is offering 3 Mixed Age Camps with a goal of having a wide age diversity in these projects. We welcome older volunteers in these projects and have worked to ensure the accommodations and work will be suitable for volunteers of all ages.

TECH FREE: There are positive benefits to spending a little time away from technology. In our Tech Free camps volunteers will have very little access to technology. In some cases this is because there is little or no cell phone service in the area of the project. In other situations it is to enhance the volunteer experience. Volunteers on these projects should be prepared to have limited cell contact during the project.

Please also be prepared to discuss the policies and procedures regarding recycling where you live with local students. For example, one of our volunteers will be offering after school classes to teach karate and yoga to the students. Another volunteer loves to fish and is bringing small fish hooks in order to join the neighborhood children fishing behind their homes. ACCOMODATION AND FOOD: To begin the project, volunteers will stay in a simple cabin by the sea for two nights. VFP HAITI03-12 CULTURAL EXCHANGE IN SCHOOL, HAITI 31-MAY to 17-JUN EDU/KIDS AGE 18+ 12 VOLS PARTNER: CODEHA, founded in 1992, is a grassroots youth organization based in La Valle de Jacmel. Its aim is to bring children, families and communities together around the needs, development, education and rights of young people. VFP is currently collaborating with them on their cultural exchange program “Building Bridges,” sustainability and gardening projects and on bringing clean water to their schools. WORK: Volunteers must be prepared to work independently, proactively engage themselves with students and the community, and be flexible. This camp will take place while Haitian schools are still in session. Volunteers will go to different schools and present to and interact with children and teachers. The focus should be exchange of cultural information, English language, water and hygiene practices. Activities might include sharing of language and culture, sports, games, music, theater, art projects, animal husbandry, gardening, and a great deal more. You will be in classrooms and need to be able to communicate either in Creole or in French. Additional projects around CODEHA or the local school might include gardening, building hand washing stations or other improvements. ACCOMODATION AND FOOD: You will be living with and like Haitians for this project! Volunteers will have a few days at the CODEHA center at the beginning and in the middle of the project. During the weeks you will stay with families. There is no running water and very limited electricity at these sites. Outhouses are the norm. Showers are available but that means an enclosed area with a pan of cold water to wash yourself. There will be bugs, not deadly but possible bothersome and definitely interesting. Food is simple and consists mainly of rice or corn and beans. Haitians typically eat two larger meals a day. There will be fruit and vegetables added to the meal depending on what is available in June. This is a unique opportunity to be fully immersed in the local way of life, past volunteers made very deep connections with their host families and communities! LOCATION: La Vallee de Jacmel is an area that comprises a number of settlements in the southeastern of Haiti, about 100 KM from Port au Prince. Agriculture is the main occupation of the Valleens. The climate is lovely and bright but not excessively hot. The area is very remote, roads are rugged, walking is the norm, and access to outside information is limited for people in this area so their desire for international volunteers is very high. While volunteers are staying at CODEHA they can easily walk to Ridore, the central town in this area. LEISURE ACTIVITIES: Most free time activities you will arrange in your own community. Children and adults are eager to do things with you. Soccer is very popular but different sports such as frisbee or badminton are fun. Talking walks together, playing cards, dancing, and other games are very popular. Pre Camp Option: We are offering a package for volunteers who want to arrive 2 days before the camp. The package is $100 and includes accommodations and meals, a visit to the National Historical Museum, a trip to a market in Petionville, and watching the sunset over Port-au-Prince from the Observatoire de Boutilliers. REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers for this project must speak some French or Creole and be motivated to present in schools. Please include some motivation on your application form; VFP will contact you for an interview prior to acceptance. VFP does not provide insurance for this program and strongly advises volunteers to purchase travel insurance for their trip to Haiti. Please submit the VFP Haiti Application Form with your VEF. ADDITIONAL FEES: $150 payable to VFP by May 16. Fees cover pick-up at the airport and transportation to and from Port au Prince (6+ hours by car) as well as meals during the program.
