Celebrating multicultural roundThis weekend in the Peter Jackson VFL and TAC Cup, we celebrate the diversity of cultures that participate in our game of Australian Football.

FOOTBALL continues to evolve at the speed of a Gary Ablett-like explosive burst from a contested situation.Forward presses, defensive lock downs and player substitutions, all unheard of several seasons ago, are now staples of the game. So, too, the multicultural expansion of those now playing the game from country and suburban level to TAC Cup to VFL to AFL.As our country welcomes more and more migrants from a raft of countries and our communities continue to diversify, so, too, the interest in Australian Rules continues to spike.AFL Development has seven core national objectives, one of which is engagement - to develop community engagement initiatives that add social value and support access to the broader pathways and inclusive environments, particularly in the Indigenous and multicultural communities. It is incumbent on our football fraternity to engage, recruit and retain not only players from a multicultural background, but also volunteers, umpires and fans from

culturally diverse backgrounds. It’s worth noting that 20 per cent of Australians were born in another country and half the number of migrants come from non English speaking nations.Combine that with their Australian born children they constitute 43 per cent of the population.By 2025 overseas born families will out-number locally born families. Australia’s population, currently 22 million, is projected to grow to 35 million by 2049 with the majority of that increase coming from migrants.Inside this joint VFL/TAC Cup Record are vignettes of how boys and men whose heritage range from Lebanon to Turkey, to Egypt to New Zealand have embraced the game.Just as importantly, these young men and their extended families have been welcomed and included into respective club environments. There is no greater example of how the traditions and awareness of our game has evolved than the NAB AFL Under 16 Championships currently underway at Blacktown, Sydney where a World XVIII and a

South Pacifi c team - comprising players from Fiji, Nauru, Samoa, Tonga and New Zealand - are competing. The World XVIII includes players from Scotland, Ireland, USA, Canada, East Timor and South Africa with the rest of the squad comprising of Australian based players from Sudan, Lebanon, Turkey, to name but a few nationalities, who are currently involved in the TAC Cup system.Unquestionably, Australian Rules popularity has never been greater. Its interest and appeal now spreads past its once traditional base, the world is starting to play the game. And, it’s great to hear that players post training are feasting not only on a meat pie, but a lavish Lebanese meal, prepared by the families of proud and passionate parents who’ve fallen in love with our game.Small steps, yes, but it is part of a bigger picture of how and where we’d like to expand the game so it truly is a game of the people.

Each year, around 15,000 Victorian men hear the words “you have cancer”, and this is why it is important to support the Call to Arms campaign.

note from the editor

MOST people will have been touched by the effects of cancer, whether it is a family member or friend being diagnosed by the disease, or worse still having someone they know lose their life to cancer.

I am one of those people who have lost a family member to cancer, and know fi rsthand the effect it can have on a family. That’s why I am very passionate about the Call to Arms campaign.

Over the next month, the Cancer Council Victoria and VFL clubs are calling on their players and supporters to help tackle cancer and join in the Call to Arms.

A number of VFL clubs are volunteering to get behind the cause to raise money for the Cancer Council. In this weekend’s Box Hill Hawks vs North Ballarat game – and a number of games to follow in late July and early August - players will be wearing yellow armbands and supporters will be asked to make a contribution to the Cancer Council.

While fi gures show that 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85, the survival rate for many common cancers has increased by more than 30% in the past two decades. Because at least one in three cancers are preventable, raising awareness through a campaign like Call to Arms matters, as clubs can help increase understanding about ways to reduce these statistics.

This is a great opportunity for clubs to play an important role in tackling men’s cancer issues. Funds raised will contribute to the Cancer Council’s research, education and patient support programs.

While the money’s important, so is making a difference in people’s attitudes. Club’s participating have received a health message poster with 5 simple actions that can reduce an individual’s chance of getting cancer, these are;

• Exercise

• Healthy Diet

• Body Checks

• Quitting Smoking

• Being Sun Smart

For more information on the Call to Arms, visit www.calltoarms.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85. Each week in the Record we will let you know which clubs are supporting the Call to Arms in their home game, so be sure to get behind the cause.

PS: We regularly acknowledge player milestones in the Record, but next week we will recognise two VFL goal umpires - Lloyd Fisk and Michael Richardson – who this Saturday will offi ciate in their 175th matches together in the Port Melbourne v Bendigo Bombers game, earning them both life memberships. Check the Record next week for an article on the milestone men.

foxtel cup

www.vfl .com.au

WILLIAMSTOWN ruthlessly booked itself into the inaugural Foxtel Cup Grand Final when it out-matched East Perth last Saturday at Etihad Stadium.

The Seagulls, boasting 14 Western Bulldogs listed or rookie players, were dominant from the opening bounce as they exposed all of East Perth’s defi ciencies – and there were plenty – to turn the Foxtel Cup Semi Final into a laugher by quarter time.

With VFL listed player Ben Davies putting on a possession gathering clinic, Williamstown surged to a 38-point lead at the fi rst break and increased the margin over the subsequent three quarters as they ran out 16.7 (103) to 4.8 (32) winners.

Such was Williamstown’s superiority that they had posted 10.4 before East Perth kicked its fi rst goal with just two minutes remaining in the second quarter.

It was hard to reconcile that East Perth somehow defeated North Ballarat in the opening match of the Foxtel Cup back in early April.

Certainly, East Perth was missing several of its big name recruits like Kayne Pettifer who has returned to Victoria, but they looked every bit like a club that currently sits in the lower rungs of the WAFL ladder.

While East Perth, maybe sparked by an altercation among teammates Jarrad Oakley Nicholls and Nick Commer as the players were heading to the dressing room at half time, restricted the damage in the second half, the gulf between the clubs had been clearly established.

Davies provided repeated opportunities for his teammates up the fi eld and they certainly grasped them. He won the loose ball, he won the contested ball, he won everything that came his way.

Western Bulldogs Patrick

Veszpremi, still looking for his fi rst game with his new club, put forward his claims for elevation to the AFL with a lively forward display.

Veszpremi, who spent two years at Sydney for a grand total of 11 games, hit the ball hard, showcased his speed and his fi nishing skills. He fi nished with four goals, all in the fi rst three quarters, in an impressive display.

Williamstown captain Brett Johnson was, again, a class act. Johnson sets the example from the get-go and his execution of skills sets a standard for his teammates.

Signifi cantly, Williamstown coach Peter German took the opportunity to provide some big game experience to several of his list. Phil Smith, Nick Walters and Stephen McCallum, who between them have played one VFL senior match this season, were included in the Foxtel Cup Semi Final win.

German also recalled popular clubman Matthew Cravino, who kicked two goals, and David Stretton, who acquitted himself well off a back fl ank.

Mindful that it will be the only VFL club not to actually have a bye

this season - taking into account its Foxtel Cup commitments - German’s idea to rotate his VFL players of Ben Jolley, Dane Rampe and Matthew Grossman, who didn’t play against East Perth, is a sound one.

Williamstown will play the winner of this weekend’s Semi-Final between Claremont/Port Adelaide in the grand Final on Saturday, August 6. The venue has yet to be decided. Fox Sports will televise the match live.

multicultural round

WHEN Ahmed Saad returned from fi ve years living in Egypt, the birth place of his parents, he was in his early teens. Australian Rules was something he’d seen on television, but it was not a sport he’d played or for that matter entertained.

Saad displayed a liking for soccer; Aussie Rules was something of a mystery.

Introduction to the national game came per courtesy of a favour for a mate as his team,

the Roxburgh Park Under 16s, were short on numbers.

It proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience and sparked a desire to embrace the game.

“My skills and kicking weren’t good. I don’t know why I enjoyed it, but I just kept playing it and I started getting better and I thought ‘I can play this game’,’ Saad said.

“I kept playing because I wanted to be the best possible player I could be.”

He spent three years playing with Roxburgh Park where he worked his way into the seniors. Not only did Saad begin to master the fundamentals, but developed a deep love for the game.

Saad continued to challenge himself, so much so that at the end of the 2008 season, he took himself down to Cramer Street to pre-season training at the Northern Bullants. Neither club general manager Garry O’Sullivan nor then coach David Teague knew much about him.

“Garry said I needed an invite, but I said ‘can I just have a run’,” Saad recalled.

O’Sullivan and Teague agreed to the request. It proved an inspired decision for all parties.

After initially struggling to maintain his place in the Bullants’ reserves and returning to local football, Saad has graduated to the

point where several AFL clubs are looking at him for the end of season AFL drafts.

Saad currently sits fourth on the VFL goal kicking ladder (35 goals), quite an achievement for someone who had never played the game until seven years ago.

The Ahmed Saad story is just one of many that every club has to tell as football this week celebrates multicultural round across the country.

Every VFL club can proudly embrace multicultural round as diverse cultural heritages spread from Sri Lankan, Indigenous, South African, Sudanese, Dutch, Italian, Greek, Kiwi, and Lebanese across the competition.

All players have marvellous stories to tell about their family tree and how their interest and participation in Aussie Rules was spawned.

It’s a wonderful advertisement how Australian Rules can bring together people from all walks of life, heritages and diverse cultural backgrounds.

Williamstown’s Stephen Witkowski is the son of Burmese and Polish parents whose family tree stretches back to a concentration camp in World War 2.

Witkowski said his father’s mother is Russian and she met her husband, who’s Polish, in a concentration camp and migrated to Australia and lived in Dandenong.

multicultural round

He said his mother migrated from Burma when she was six.

With the father’s soccer penchant, Witkowski and his brothers initially played the round ball game, but switched to Australian Rules at Under 9 level.

“Dad was a strong St Kilda supporter. We grew up watching them play on TV and went down to play with Diamond Creek,” Witkowski said.

Witkowski quickly took to the game, gained the attention of Northern Knights scouts and spent three years in the TAC Cup program before continuing his football at Williamstown.

Frankston forward Khan Haretuku wasn’t introduced to the game until his early teens. The son of a part Maori, part Yugoslavian father and a mother who has Scottish heritage, Haretuku began playing basketball because of his Dad’s interest in the hoops.

“That didn’t interest me then I got into rugby league with my friends and school mates then a bit later on I got into rugby union and then Aussie Rules,” Haretuku said.

“At one stage I tried to play all three codes, but obviously that didn’t work out. I ended up choosing Aussie Rules because I just enjoyed it a lot more.

“There’s a lot more skill and tactics in Aussie Rules. Everyone looks at the great marks of the past like ‘Jezza’, sitting or standing on

people’s heads taking marks and kicking goals from the boundary line.

“All those things drew me in.”

Three seasons after he began playing football, Haretuku received a New South Wales football scholarship, which led to St Kilda rookie listing him at 17.

While things didn’t pan out as he would have liked at St Kilda, Haretuku is enjoying his time at Frankston and most of all he’s enjoying playing the game.

Northern Bullants captain Adam Iacobucci is Italian, but his involvement in football goes right back to the days of Auskick.

“My old man has always loved the footy and used to go every week to watch Carlton. He’d go to Princes Park and I’d go join him when I could from the time I was seven or eight,” Iacobucci said.

Tony Iacobucci has been a constant throughout his son’s career fi rst at Collingwood and for the past fi ve seasons at the Bullants.

Adam Iacobucci said he the Bullants embraced multiculturalism and made everyone who came to the club feel part of the Bullants family.

“It should not matter where you come from. As long as you are a good person that’s all that matters,” Iacobucci said.

It’s a sentiment echoed by Saad, who said his involvement had sparked an

interest in the game from his mother and sisters.

Saad said he’d received nothing but encouragement and support wherever he’d played and he felt perfectly at home playing football.

“I’ve never been involved in any racism issues,” he said.

“There should never be a racism issue in the game. People play the game because they love and enjoy it. It doesn’t matter who plays it, they’re playing it for the love of the game.

“You want to attract as many cultures as you can to the game, it’s brings everyone together and that’s got to be a good thing.”

Stephen Witkowski.

IT would be fair to say that Khan Haretuku has endured more than the occasional speed hump on his football journey.

Haretuku, a late convert to Australian Rules after playing basketball, rugby league and rugby union in his early teens, has ridden football’s roller coaster at a faster pace than most.

After gaining an AFL scholarship in NSW, which

St Kilda later upgraded to a spot on its rookie list when he was 17, Haretuku’s stay at Moorabbin was seemingly like going through a revolving door – no sooner he entered than he exited.

Next stop was Frankston, but not even an AFL background, albeit as short as it was, proved enough to keep him from spending time in the reserves last year.

And, it was the case again this season where the 21-year-old logged four successive weeks in the reserves.

But, since his recall and move to a key position forward, Haretuku has displayed the qualities that obviously impressed football scouts when he was a teenager.

Frankston coach Simon Goosey said the upside to Haretuku is unlimited given he’s only been playing the game for the past six years.

Goosey said Haretuku is still learning the rudiments of the game, but his athleticism and size – he’s 199 cm and 100 kg – made him a defi nite project player who would only improve.

“He’s pretty much new to football, but he’s a really good athlete,” enthused Goosey.

“I don’t believe St Kilda worked with him enough. We’ve been doing a lot of kick-to-kick with him, especially early in the year.

“The last three weeks there has been a real upward

trend in what he’s doing, he’s grabbing the marks. He really is an athlete.

“He’s just go to get that belief and get that football smarts. No one works any harder around the club than he does.

“He’s a kid with a heap of potential.”

Haretuku said he was still very much a sponge, soaking up as much information and knowledge as possible in a bid to make him a better player.

He recalled that he was so raw when he was on St Kilda’s rookie list that he was unable to take the opportunity that he was presented.

“I’m getting to understand now what it takes and all the work that needs to go on off the fi eld so you can play consistently on the fi eld,” Haretuku said.

“At the start of the year I still wasn’t sure what to do in terms of my role in the team and I went back to the reserves and tried to get to as many contests, fl y for as many marks as I could and I was lucky enough to get selected back in the seniors.

“I’m just continually working on things just to improve myself and help my team as much as I can. I’m loving it at Frankston, all my teammates and coaches have been welcoming.

“We’re all around the same age and I’m sure if we all stick together the rewards will come.”

Haretuku still new to football

AMONG the sea of faces that confronted Damian Carroll at his fi rst training session as new Box Hill Hawks coach were a few familiar ones.

Carroll recognised Adam Pattison, Beau Muston, Jarrad Boumann, who he’d seen play AFL. Then there was Shaun Pollard, an old foe from Frankston during his playing

days at Springvale and Tim Northe, a graduate from Gippsland Power, the TAC Cup club he’d coached the past two seasons.

And, then there was someone else, who he vaguely remembered, but couldn’t immediately put a name to. Then it came to him – it was David Mirra, one of his former pupils from his days teaching at Mazenod College.

Mirra well remembered his old physical education teacher. In fact, Mirra recalled that when he was in Year 7 & 8 he would go to watch Carroll play for the Scorpions.

Six years later, Carroll is still the teacher and Mirra the pupil, albeit in a different environment.

While he played just the solitary game in his fi rst season after coming through the Eastern Ranges program, Mirra viewed the year as a learning experience.

“Coming from TAC Cup it is a totally different environment where it is all about structures and becoming more of a professional,” Mirra said.

“Coming in and learning of blokes like ‘Sammy’ Gibson and (Cam) Pederson and (Ed) Curnow and seeing how professional they are in going about their training really helped me realise what level I needed to get to.

“It improved me in that aspect. I wasn’t too far away from getting games last year. It was just that the makeup of

the side that we had, in terms of the Hawthorn guys, made it hard to get in.”

One thing that Mirra took away from his fi rst VFL season was that he needed to ramp up his fi tness base. Again, it was something he picked up from the VFL Hawks’ leaders like Gibson.

Consequently, Mirra did not miss a single pre-season training session.

It’s had the desired result with the 20-year-playing every match for Box Hill Hawks this season except one where he missed with a bruised rib and according to Carroll must be considered a candidate for the Fothergill Round medal.

Mirra noted that if you peel back all the elements, get your preparation right and be as professional as you can there is a good chance that you are going to enjoy some success.

“It comes down to professionalism. You’ve got to be in an elite operating system: you’ve got to look at what you eat, prepare for games the right way during the week by getting the proper amount of sleep.

“All that stuff and learning off the blokes at Hawthorn, we have a great alignment. You try to pick their brains as much as possible when they come down to training.”

The thirst for knowledge, as David Mirra understands, is never ending.

blood oath

IT IS OK to like, but better to pledge your Blood Oath!

Over 23,000 people have now ‘liked’ the Blood Oath Facebook page. Whilst this shows that the message is being received loud and clear about the campaign, the aim is to have people pledge their Blood Oath, which under half have done (8,000).

By pledging a Blood Oath, people are showing their commitment to their teammates, their club and the wider community to ensure that people understand that when on the road, “your mate’s life is in your hands”.

Stats for 2011 show we have already lost about three AFL footy teams worth of men on the roads, so now is the chance for football followers to put a stop to this trauma and encourage young people to drive responsibly by taking the Blood Oath.

Local metropolitan and country clubs have set the standard so far for their Blood Oath pledges, with the challenge now on Peter Jackson VFL and TAC Cup clubs to spread the word, and show that their teams are right

behind the campaign. Midweek, Coldstream were leading the way on the Metro ladder, and Corio Community SC were leading the Country ladder. The best of the VFL and TAC Cup clubs during the week were Collingwood and Geelong Falcons (full ladder below).

It only takes a few moments of your time, and chances are you spend more than a few minutes each day on Facebook, so why not venture over to www.facebook.com/mybloodoath and take the Oath.

Apart from pledging your Blood Oath, you will go into the weekly prize draw for a chance to win $5,000 for your club, and AFL Grand Final tickets for yourself – just by pledging! At the end of July, one club in country Victoria and one club in the metropolitan area will each be rewarded with a $30,000 prize. Winning clubs will be those who receive the most pledges.

So do your bit to curb the road toll for young drivers, and pledge your Blood Oath. Visit www.facebook.com/mybloodoath select your team, select an oath to drive safely and post your oath

to your own Facebook page. This will encourage your friends to also take an oath and commit to safer driving. The aim is for your club to have the most oaths of all entries.

Pledge Ladder

The TAC road show will be heading to Box Hill City Oval this Sunday – check out the Ford Blood Oath vehicle at the game for your chance to win great on the spot prizes, and take part on the Blood Oath handball competition. See the pictures from the road show last week at Frankston.

Mark Corrigan

Age: 27

Clubs: Geelong

Games: 27

Goals: 12

MARK Corrigan thought the book on his VFL career had closed back in 2006.

After playing 14 games for Sandringham, including the Preliminary Final, an infl ux of then affi liated Melbourne players saw him left out of the Zebras Grand Final and subsequent premiership team.

Football then took Corrigan to the Geelong Football League where he played for South Barwon and tasted premiership success in 2007, 2009 and 2010.

It was at South Barwon where Corrigan played under Dale

Amos, current coach of Geelong’s VFL team. At the end of last season, Amos put a football proposal to Corrigan: work and play for the VFL Cats.

It sounded like a win/win situation for Corrigan, who again got to play VFL as well as work part-time for Geelong, mainly on opposition analysis.

“I saw it as a good opportunity,” Corrigan said.

“I just look at the team we play the next week, try to break the way their play, how they set up with their structures and how they like to play their game style.

“I also get to do a little with the younger kids on the AFL list.”

After playing with Old Haileybury in the Victoria Amateur Football Association, Corrigan was asked by Melbourne to try out for place on its rookie list in 2005.

While nothing eventuated, Corrigan took up Melbourne’s suggestion that he play with its then VFL affi liate Sandringham.

Corrigan’s fi rst season at Trevor Barker Oval was cut short by a knee injury that erased the second half of the ’05 season and fi rst half of 2006.

He forced his way into the dominant Zebras’ team, but fell victim to a number crunching exercise when Melbourne’s season in the AFL season ended in the second week of the fi nals and the Demons wanted a number of its players to fulfi l commitments with Sandringham.

“That’s footy. It happens at all levels. At the time it was very hard to swallow, but when you look back at it, I think it makes you a better person if you take it the right way,” Corrigan said.

“‘I was fortunate enough to play at Sandringham in an era where they had a very strong core of VFL players, which gave them a springboard to win those three fl ags.

“You move on from it pretty quickly.”

Returning to VFL after a four season absence took some adjusting, but Corrigan said access to all Geelong’s fi rst class facilities, the rehab programs and the commitment to preparing well had resulted in his body being in better shape than it had been.

As a result, Corrigan has emerged as one of the Cats most consistent VFL players, but what has struck him the most is the professionalism of all Geelong’s list.

Corrigan noted that every Geelong premiership player that has spent time in the VFL has embraced the situation, the young AFL listed and rookie players as well as the top up players.

“I could not speak highly enough of those guys. They’ve been fantastic for the young kids to learn from and for me to play with, they make it a really good experience for everyone.”

It’s one that Mark Corrigan is glad to be involved with.

EACH week at a VFL game we will catch up with a fan in the crowd.

Name: John Lysaght

Lives: Mornington

VFL team you support:

Sandringham

How did you come to support

Sandringham? We lived one street back from the ground. Since I was a kid I heard the siren sound each weekend, and my mum took me to a game in 1959. Around the corner from us was the Mennie’s, so there was a lot of Sandy support in our area.

What do you enjoy about VFL

football? You can go and have a kick on the ground, listen to the coach during the breaks and you can talk to the players. Also meeting all the volunteers- I have made a lot of friends through the volunteers at Sandy over the years. I have seen players and coaches come and go, but there are people that have been here 30-40 years so it is great to have those people around.

You have a great viewing spot

in the scoreboard: On a nice weather day like today it is OK. – but you look at the score it is not a nice day at all.

What is the secret to

running the scoreboard? Concentration, and always watch the goal umpires signal.

Do you get jealous of

clubs with an electronic scoreboard? There are times I think I would love to just sit in a nice comfortable box somewhere (with an electronic scoreboard), but this gives you a sense of involvement. Part of me says I would like to see it as we are moving on, but this is a bit of tradition.

Favourite VFL player currently

at Sandringham: I sponsor Chris Irving who comes from Seaford down my way. Marigliani is great, and a young guy James Hallahan. He lives in Blairgowrie so he travels a fair way to get here, and another guy who plays in the reserves, he lives in Rye, so we have guys that drive straight past Frankston to come and play at Sandy. David Gallagher the captain as well is a great player.

Favourite past player at

Sandringham: My favourite player was always Ian Hutchison - he wore number 38 and we went to the same school Hampton High. Terry Wilkins was a great player. Freddy Webster captained the 1962 premiership side, and Chad Liddell, triple premiership captain, he was great.

Most memorable VFL moment: I have been to every Sandy premiership bar one, which was 1946 as I was not born yet. I was at the 1962 premiership when I was 7 so don’t remember much about it. But 1985 when we had not won one in 23 years, and we beat Williamstown by a goal, that was huge. Plus 2004 when we beat Port Melbourne, as I love beating Port Melbourne. They thrashed us in 1977 by over 100 points , and that was revenge for me – took 27 years but it was worth waiting for.

Any possible AFL draftees

currently playing in the VFL in

2011: I always though Jimmy Magner would be a chance, as each week he shows a lot of AFL players up. Then it comes down to age, but they picked Podsiadly up late so you never know.

Favourite food at the footy:

At Sandy it is a hot dog or a pastie, but away games Box Hill has the best food, they serve up a mixture and have a great steak sandwich out there.

Grand fi nal prediction: I would love to say Sandy. If Port don’t win it this year they will never win it, as much as it galls me to say that they will win it. If this is not their year it never will be after 12 straight wins, so I think they will.

Liston Medal Winner: Marc Greig always plays well for North Ballarat against Sandy, so he might be an outside chance.

Adam Bentick

Age: 26

Clubs: Northern Bullants, Port Melbourne

Games: 77

Goals: 51

Highlights: VFL representative player 2010

ADAM Bentick remembers the “pop” then, almost immediately, the pain. He knew he was in trouble, a view that was later confi rmed by scans.

Bentick heard and felt the “pop” in an ankle during the second quarter against North Ballarat.

As soon as he attempted to put any weight on the leg his worst fears were realised. “Straight away I knew I was in a fair bit of trouble,” Bentick said.

Worse still, subsequent surgery and rehab means that Bentick will take no further part in Port Melbourne’s bid this season to end a 29-year premiership drought.

Ironically, Bentick became the second Port Melbourne player this season to injure his syndesmosis. Forward Adrian Bonaddio injured his during pre-season and is still on the comeback trail.

Syndesmosis is the ligament that holds together the stability of the ankle.

“It’s not really a football injury.

The surgeon was telling me it’s more a rugby injury,” Bentick said.

Bentick can recall the centre area at Eureka Stadium had become “sticky” as a result of overnight rain and he became stuck in his bid to win a loose ball.

“I pretty much fell over my own leg. The ball went behind me and I had all the momentum of my body going forward and I had to turn and pivot on my foot and go back for the ball,” Bentick said.

“I believe I got my big toe caught in the mud and it got stuck and I went back over my ankle. The movement injured the syndesmosis.”

Surgeons inserted two metal pins into the ankle, which will come out around Peter Jackson VFL Grand Final time.

While Port Melbourne infl icted a crushing 10-goal win over the reigning premiers on its trip to North Ballarat, it certainly came at a cost.

Apart from losing Bentick for the season, midfi elder Toby Pinwill required surgery for a fractured cheekbone, which is expected to keep him out until next month.

Bentick said the pins will allow the injury to heal naturally and when removed, and following the required rehab, there is no reason why he can’t resume his career without any fear or consequences.

“I’m hoping that I will be good

to go pre-season and hit next season full on,” Bentick said.

While he will be sadly missed, Bentick said such was the depth at the club his absence would provide an opportunity for a teammate to step up and help the club on its drive into the fi nals.

When his mobility improves, Bentick is keen to assist off-fi eld in any area that coach Gary Ayres chooses. “If I can help out in any way I will. With the team going so well, I want to help the boys heading into fi nals.”

northern bullants vs sandringham

Bullants four quarter performanceTHE NORTHERN Bullants produced a commanding four quarter team performance against Sandringham last weekend to take another step closer to consolidating their top four position.

The Bullants were never headed in the match, as the home side struggled on the scoreboard, kicking only two goals for the game, as the visitors ran out 79 point victors.

The match was important for both sides – Sandringham to further the gap between themselves and ninth placed Box Hill, and for the Bullants a chance to break a two game losing streak, and produce their fi rst win against a top eight side since round 6 of the season.

With both teams heading into a bye in round 16, the coaches’ impressions of the game could not have been further apart post match.

Zebras coach Brett Lovett was unimpressed with his sides’ performance, lamenting back to back 10 goal plus defeats against top eight opposition. “We are not playing very positive football, we are playing very individual, selfi sh, non team orientated football at the moment.”

Northern Bullants coach Darren Harris on the other hand was pleased with his sides four quarter performance. “We talked a lot about four quarter effort today, and I thought we got that done so I was really pleased with that effort.

“We talked during the week that it was the fi rst time we have lost two in a row, and we were pretty disappointed with our fi rst half last week (vs Williamstown). There was a much bigger emphasis that we had the opposition one on one pressure for a lot of the game,” Harris said.

“We had around 100 tackles, which says our intent was there from the start.”

In a lacklustre fi rst term, the signs did not indicate the match would be a one sided affair, with both teams able to attack the goals. The more accurate Bullants led by fi ve points at quarter time.

The second term was where the game turned around, with the Northern Bullants kicking fi ve unanswered goals to the Zebras one behind. Rohan Kerr opened the onslaught for the visitors marking up forward to kick his second of the game, and then goals to Jarrod McCorkell and Levi Casboult quickly had the margin out to 23 points just fi ve

minutes into the quarter. It wasn’t until midway through the quarter that Michael Lourey kicked Sandringham’s only score of the term – a behind – but the Bullants answered with goals to Ryan Gale and Tyson Thomas with his second, to see the half time margin sitting at 36 points.

News at half time was not good for the Zebras, with both Michael Gardiner and Rhys Stanley both set to sit out the second half with hamstring complaints. Despite their presence in the fi rst half, Bullants big man Nick Meese was dominant in the ruck, and he continued this form into the second half amassing 42 hitouts for the afternoon against a variety of second half opponents.

The Bullants run of goals continued in the second half, kicking another three unanswered goals, as the small forwards of the visitors made their mark on the game. Thomas and Ahmed Saad combined for all of the Bullants goals in the third term, with Thomas leading all scorers with four majors for the game. Harris was pleased with Thomas’ return to form. “I thought he was one that was a little bit down in recent weeks, and he really stepped up today. His forward pressure and being able to hit the scoreboard were really important.”

At three quarter time the margin was 55 points, and the Zebras started the fi nal term on a positive note, ending the 10 goal unanswered run of the visitors to see Tommy Walsh kick his second of the game. But that is where respectability ended for Sandringham, as the Bullants rammed home the last fi ve goals to run out 79 point victors.

Tyson Thomas.

port melbourne vs collingwood

PORT MELBOURNE have notched up their twelfth win of the season, with a tantalising eight goal to one fi nal term stirring the Boroughs’ to a hardly fought victory against a brave Collingwood side. Brendan Lucas reports.

For the fi rst three quarters, Collingwood were positioned well to cause the upset of the season against an undefeated Port side, but Port’s bigger bodies and endurance proved the key to unraveling the young Pies.

However, Port’s day didn’t start as planned, as they suffered a blow midway through the fi rst to Tristan Francis who received head high collision after ducking low in a tackle, needing to be stretchered off.

Throughout the opening term it appeared the Pies had the ability to match it around the ground. Collingwood’s defence proved steady in the fi rst, with John Ceglar, Tyson Goldsack, and Tom Young providing contests and enabling smooth rebounding transitions from defence to the forward line.

Seven minutes into the second term, the Boroughs’ put their slow start behind them, as Dean Galea slotted his second of the game with a strong mark in the square. This was shortly followed up by two quick goals in succession to Josh Scipione and Ryan McMahon to give Port a 17-point lead.

Two goals late in the quarter to the Pies kept them alive, as a check side along the ground from youngster Jye Bolton gave them a spark heading into the main break, chasing a 10-point defi cit.

Shane Valenti and Ryan Mcmahon led the way for the Borough throughout the day, with 27 and 26 possessions respectively, causing headaches for the young Pies midfi eld.

Goals became scarce in the

second half, but it was Kirk Ugle who gave the Pies the start they needed, as he put through his third to bring the lead back to six-points.

Although, it was in the Pies attempt to replicate Port’s class this season where things started to come undone, as a misfi red handball from Pies defender Tom Young in the back half led to an easy third goal to Port’s Ryan McMahon late in the third.

With one goal separating both sides at the last change, and Port with only 21 fi t players, both Port coach Gary Ayres and Pies’ coach Tarkyn Lockyer were fi red up and urging their players to fi nish the game strongly and make the most of their opportunities.

It only took three minutes for Ayres’ side to start to play the way they have done all season, as they peppered the goals for the quarter. The Pies remained scoreless until the 19-minute mark of the last quarter with a behind.

Port showed all the class in the last overrunning a valiant Pies outfi t. Two late goals to Port’s Patrick Rose who kicked his fi rst, followed by Ryan McMahon’s fourth in a

near best on ground performance put the Pies to the sword, as Port ran out to a convincing 48-point win.

After the game Gary Ayres seemed pleased with his sides’ ability to fi nish the game, but lamented intensity and decision-making during key periods of the game. He praised Collingwood’s work rate for three quarters and their ability to sustain their pressure.

“They were very good at pressing and closing us down a little bit, and then what they were able to do is roll out of their defence very well,” he said.

“Collingwood played like a side that was going out there to play the game. I felt we pressured ourselves at times with a lack of work rate, a lack of effort, and a lack of options leading up. But once we actually structured that together then we ended up kicking eight goals to one in the last quarter.”

“That [game] says a lot about Collingwood’s confi dence, but in saying that, you don’t want to be leaving it to the last quarter all the time, you just won’t be able to continually do that.”

WILLIAMSTOWN Football & Development Manager Chris Dixon

This week we catch up with Chris Dixon, and get an update on the Seagulls home ground renovations, as well as a charity project players from the club are working on.

Tell us a bit about your role at Williamstown: I’m into my second year at the club now as Football & Development Manager and I’m thoroughly enjoying my time here. As with all VFL positions it’s a little bit of everything and you get to appreciate and experience all aspects of the organisation. This season I’ve taken on a bigger role with our Development Group in the Liam Picken Academy and doing a lot more opposition analysis work during the week. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities and my role is made a lot easier by the club’s incredible group of dedicated support staff and volunteers.

Obviously it is exciting times for the club, second on the Peter Jackson VFL ladder, and into the Foxtel Cup Grand Final: We’re pretty happy with where we sit at the moment but we know that we’ll be judged in September. I think we’ve seen a steady improvement throughout the year however we’re still searching for the complete four quarter effort that will be required come fi nals time.

The Foxtel Cup has been a great experience and a fantastic opportunity to blood a few youngsters whilst giving our more senior players a rest. We’re looking forward to representing Victoria in the Grand Final and hopefully claiming the inaugural title.

It must be good to see a number of players from the Western Bulldogs alignment rewarded for good VFL form, like Andrew Hooper and Luke Dahlhaus? It’s always pleasing to see guys like Hoops and Dahl perform for the Bulldogs and make the step up after impressing with us. They’ve no doubt contributed to the Dogs recent run of good form which has given us a bit more stability with less changes at the selection table each week.

The players are about to embark on a major project as part of their Acacia course, tell us a bit about it: Williamstown Football Club is entrenched in the Williamstown and Western Suburbs community and we’re always looking for different ways we can play our part. We see ourselves as a community leader whether it be through raising money for the Queensland Floods appeal or going out to schools and local footy clubs to conduct clinics. The players in the Liam Picken Academy will be organising and running a charity event

aimed at raising funds for the charity LADDER which undertakes amazing work for Youth Homelessness.

Our Development Group have come up with some great initiatives which will raise both money and awareness for LADDER which will go a long way to help them achieve their goals. Our young players have been fantastic to date and have really taken ownership of the project. We look forward to our home game on the 13th of August where the event will take place and I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot more about the project in the coming weeks.

‘On the road’ has become a term used a lot with Williamstown this year ... this week the road show hits Wangaratta. The country trips have been well received? 2011 was always going to be a diffi cult year without a home ground however I think we’ve all just become accustomed to it. We’ve been lucky we have

a great training venue at the Whitten Oval which we can use. There have been no detrimental effects so far despite travelling as far as Perth, Torquay, Adelaide and now Wangaratta! The Easter Sunday Torquay game was no doubt a showpiece game for the VFL with close to 5,000 people there and we’re hopeful we can draw another large crowd up in Wangaratta this week and really highlight the quality of VFL Football to a new audience.

It must be good to tie this week’s trip in with a TAC Cup curtain raiser as well? It’s a great opportunity because it’s not often we get a curtain raiser involving the Western Jets fi xtured. We have a great working relationship with the

Western Jets and sharing offi ces with them over the past 13 years has allowed both clubs to establish one of the best VFL/TAC alignments. We had the Western Jets players train with us during the week and hopefully we can see both sides salute on Sunday in Wangaratta.

How are upgrades going to the home ground? I think there’s starting to get a real buzz of excitement about returning to Burbank Oval next year. The development is on track and we’re looking forward to returning to a brand new $8.5 million facility. The redevelopment is not just going to benefi t us but also the Western Jets, the WRFL and Football Williamstown who will all

use the facility at various stages. It’s been great that our sponsors, members and supporters have been so loyal to us this season despite the lack of a home ground, returning to an amazing complex next year in Burbank Oval is almost a reward for them as well for their dedicated support.

Sam Dwyer

Age: 24

Clubs: Port Melbourne

Games: 73

Goals: 68

Highlights: Port Melbourne best & fairest 2009; VFL Team Of The Year 2009

WHILE there’s back slappers aplenty down at the Borough these days, Sam Dwyer can remember the tough times for Port Melbourne.

When Dwyer arrived at the North Port Oval in 2005 from TAC Cup club Geelong Falcons, Port Melbourne was a middle of the ladder-placed club, but it was the last year of its turbulent alignment with North Melbourne.

In its fi rst season as a stand- alone club, Port Melbourne fi nished a conspicuous last, a position they improved upon considerably the next season to make the Elimination Final.

But, it was the arrival in 2008 of former Hawthorn premiership

star and Geelong and Adelaide coach Gary Ayres that Dwyer attributes the turn- around in the club’s fortunes.

Port Melbourne fi nished on top-of-the-ladder with a 16-4 record in ’08 and made the Grand Final, but was no match for a faster, sharper North Ballarat at Etihad Stadium.

The Borough have fi nished with top four fi nishes the past two seasons and, according to corporate bookmakers, is a short-priced favourite to win this year’s premiership.

“A lot of the credit has to go to ‘Ayresy’ (coach Gary Ayres), just the way he’s come in and changed the club has been amazing,” Dwyer said.

“He’s been by far the best coach I’ve ever had. You are always learning from him. His knowledge of the game and his communication skills are second to none.

“He’s open to having a conversation one on one, he keeps everyone motivated in his different ways – some may need to be pulled aside, some may need to be sounded out in front of the group. “

While there is little doubt that Port Melbourne’s depth is as strong as its been for decades – the club has played 39 players going into round 15 – Dwyer said the unmistakable fact that all the players had fi lled their role.

“You wouldn’t know that we’d used that many players. Everyone that has come in hasn’t put a foot wrong and

played their role,” Dwyer said.

With Port Melbourne already assured on playing fi nals, virtually having a lock on a top four spot and a vice-like grip on a top two spot, Dwyer said there was no chest beating going on.

“’Ayresy’ is good at keeping everyone pretty grounded,” Dwyer said.

“Week to week there is extra motivation, we know we can improve. We realise that we can’t look any further ahead than the next week.

“It’s a cliché, but really that’s all we’re doing – just looking at our next match.”

Injury reduced Dwyer, who sustained a lateral ligament injury to a knee in the 2010 season-opener when an opponent fell across the knee in a tackle, to a cameo role. He returned to play the last four home and away games then the fi nals.

Dwyer is reproducing the form that saw him win the 2009 Port Melbourne best and fairest and in some ways that can be put down to last year’s disappointment.

“Missing it makes you appreciate it even more,” Dwyer said.

Dwyer had a screw removed from his knee pre-season, but there has been no on-going issue this season.

“It’s been fi ne, no dramas at all,” Dwyer said.

The same can be said about Port Melbourne.

Dwyer enjoys the good and the bad

media coverage

OUT of a small Auskick program in Singapore was born the Singapore Sharks Football Club.

The club was formed at the start of 2009 to take over from the more informal Auskick program which had commenced in 2007. Members of the Sharks recently visited Melbourne and took part in an Auskick game at the MCG, as well as participating in an under 10’s game against Ivanhoe Junior FC.

Auskick had been started up by school teacher and Aussie ex-pat Liam King who moved to Singapore in 2005. With a footy loving son, King began an Auskick program which grew from 10-15 kids in 2006 to 150 kids in 2008. Auskick had now outgrown an individual volunteer running the program so the Singapore Sharks Football Club was born, and they now have close to 250 members of the club, including a “Dads” team which recently participated in the Bali Masters over 35s 9-a-side competition.

In their second Auskick trip to Melbourne, King – the clubs director of coaching - explained how the trip to Australia originated. “The idea was to try and give the children in our program a real experience of not only playing the game but playing in front of a crowd and experiencing an AFL game live.

“The children were extremely excited and took pride in the fact that they were representing Singapore. They were amazed by the size of the crowd and stadium (MCG) as for many of them this was there fi rst real experience of an AFL game.”

Being the only junior club in Singapore, the games each Saturday are always intra club games, so the committee at the Sharks were keen to organise a match on this trip to Australia against another team so the kids could experience all playing in the one side.

Current Sharks president Rob Schaefer and close friend Chris Naish - whose kids play at Ivanhoe Junior Football Club - joined forces and arranged an Under 10 game of Ivanhoe vs Singapore at Ford Park in Ivanhoe on Sunday, 26 June.

“This trip we also played a game against the Ivanhoe Junior FC which is our fi rst real game against a team in Australia, as we have only played against other AFL teams in the region like Malaysia,” King said.

The game was a huge success and a hard fought and even contest until Ivanhoe kicked clear in the last quarter to secure a 7.6.48 to 4.3.27 victory.

With the game growing in interest in Singapore through

the development of clubs like the Sharks, another area King believes is key to growing the game is coverage of the sport on television.

“We have 6 or 7 games telecast each weekend via the Australian Network currently so it is quite good,” King said.

“Although I believe the rights are being renegotiated and this may be reviewed in August. There is a chance they will not cover AFL from then on, as they focus more on the local against ex-pat market which will be devasting if it happens.”

AT various times this season Calder Cannon players have dined out on lavish spreads of traditional Lebanese cuisine.

Omar Abdullah, Osman Allouch and Adam Saad, whose grandmothers and mothers prepare the feast, serve it with the boast that this IS the real McCoy, not what may be found in fast food outlets.

The times of pie nights may still exist, but football’s traditions are clearly forever changing.

It’s now a multicultural game representing a myriad of countries complete with all their respective traditions and customs.

Allouch, a devout Muslim, has been in the Cannon’s system since the Under 16s. He’s played a handful of TAC Cup games this year in a season where he travelled back to Lebanon and also was ill.

Calder Cannons boast Lebanese, Turkish, a Nigerian/Indian, Italians, Greeks, perhaps the greatest diversity of cultures at any TAC Cup club.

Cannons Regional Manager Ian Kyte said all the Lebanese players were practising Muslims who prayed four times a day and who strictly obeyed their religious faith, especially Ramadan.

Kyte recalled that last pre-season coincided with

Ramadan and Allouch came to training with food and water and when the sun set he would rush to the rooms so he could eat and drink as the Muslim faith allows.

“Ossie did that for a couple of weeks. We had to see if there were any snacks that would be okay by his faith to eat during the day. Often he would come to training and we were worried that he hadn’t eaten enough food to give him energy,” Kyte said.

For all the diversity of players, Kyte noted there had not been one issue. “Everyone’s here for the right reason,” he said.

Kyte recalled one match where the Cannon’s midfi eld brigade was all of Middle East descent and before the bounce all the boys began talking in Lebanese about their set-up.

“It left all the Western Jets boys looking at each other wondering what was going on,” Kyte said.

What Kyte said has evolved since the boys began playing is that all the player’s extended family come to games to show their support.

He noted it had broadened all concerned at the club’s appreciation of their culture and way of life.

Allouch said his father, who was born in Lebanon and migrated to Melbourne when he was three, was an avid football fan, infl uenced him to become involved in the game.

He said his father played for Coburg Amateurs and had always loved the game and the option of playing another sport was never considered.

“I’ve always loved football

and we’d play kick to kick in the back yard and I started playing in the Under 12s,” Allouch said.

“It’s just gone from there and I was lucky enough to get into the Cannon’s program.”

Allouch said the dawn to dusk fasting of Ramadan made it tough at times for him to prepare for training, but he said he made up for it as best he could.

He said his mother was only too keen to help out the Cannons given how the club had embraced him and the other Lebanese players.

“Everyone is very welcoming and respectful of everyone else and that’s great,” Allouch said.

Ozgur Uysal, a son of Turkish immigrant, followed his father’s passion for Australian Rules. Uysal, now in his second year in the Cannons program, has played for Coburg Tigers under the 23rd player rule for the past two seasons.

“It was pretty good to play with and against AFL players,” Uysal said.

Uysal said he’s grateful for the opportunity provided by the Cannons who’ve helped improve his game. “Everyone at the Cannons are great, it’s a great club to be around.”

Josh Ojamiren adds another dimension to the multiculturalism at the Cannons. Ojamiren’s father is Nigerian and his mother is Indian.

Ojamiren’s interest in football stagnated for several years

after playing in Under 10s, but was re-ignited from his schoolmates at Aberfeldie.

“I went down as a favour to my mates and then I got an invite from the Cannons and it’s just gone from there,” Ojamiren said.

“It’s been a big privilege.”

Western Jets’ Sudanese triumvirate Majok Aneet, Bol Kolong and Abraham Kur have been selected to play for the World XVIII Team in the AFL Under 16 National Championships, which began last weekend at Blacktown.

Jets’ Regional Manager Shane Sexton said the Sudanese players were identifi ed playing locally; all had displayed signifi cant improvement and had much more to offer.

Like Aneet and Kur, Northern Knights Masaki Miki, a youngster from Japanese heritage, is representing the World XVIII team at the AFL

Under 16 Championships.

Miki came through the Banyule Football club and last year won the competition’s colts best and fairest award.

AFL National Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan said the World XVIII squad comprised 10 players from countries ranging from Canada, USA, Denmark, Scotland, South Africa as well as 20 multicultural players currently playing in competitions around Australia.

Former Brisbane Lion premiership player Chris Johnson will coach the team with former four-time Frankston best and fairest winner Michael Ablett the assistant coach.

“We’re hoping to give all these boys the most brilliant life experience they’ve had,” Sheehan said.

“Our game is growing and the world is starting to play the game.”

LOOK at the statistics and they tell you a story of an extraordinary career. Look beyond those compelling fi gures and you fi nd a man passionate about football, his job and providing a foundation for some of today’s AFL stars.

Numbers tell you that Keith Burns, who retired this week from AFL Victoria, holds a place coaching young men that has few, if any, peers not only in Victoria, but also Australia.

Consider what Burns accomplished in a football career that began at Collingwood in 1957, aged 17, when Phonse Kyne was coach, Bill Twomey was captain and Murray Weideman won the best and fairest.

During his fi ve seasons playing at Victoria Park, Burns would play 28 games before he would move to VFA club Sandringham where the opening chapter of a remarkable coaching career would begin.

It would be halted only once – in 1973-74 – but along this journey he would make a lasting impact at each stop-over.

At Sandringham, Brunswick and Diamond Creek he would be captain-coach. At Sandringham, he would win the J.J. Liston Trophy for the fairest and best in the competition (1962).

Burns would win best and fairests at Sandringham and Brunswick; he would captain

the VFA representative team and be named the team’s best player. Following his two-year hiatus, Burns would return to coach Templestowe for three seasons, his fi rst job where he focused solely on coaching, before returning to Victoria Park in 1978.

Over 14 years, Burns would shape the next generation of Collingwood players as its Under 19s coach. There would be many club and AFL legends whose career would be moulded by Burns – most noticeably Gavin Brown and Mick McGuane.

Here’s some more telling numbers: 61 of those Collingwood Under 19s players would play VFL/AFL football.

During his 316 games as the Magpies Under 19s coach, Burns coached Collingwood to the 1986 premiership, a team that included Brown, McGuane, Damian Monkhorst, Gavin Crosisca, Jason Croall, Athos Hrysoulakis. In fact, 13 members of that team would progress to play VFL for Collingwood.

When the AFL moved to replace the Under 19s with at the time was considered a revolutionary concept of an Under 18 competition based on regions, both in metropolitan Melbourne as well as country Victoria, Burns was an obvious choice as a coach.

He would coach Northern Knights for 11 seasons and

214 games, which still remains a TAC Cup record. So, too, Burns’ feat of coaching the Knights to four successive premierships. No TAC Cup coach has won as many fl ags.

During that period he would also coach Vic Metro to an AFL Under 18 Championship crown.

And, some more numbers to digest: From his time at the Knights there would be 56 players who would graduate to play AFL. Some, like Brent Harvey, Anthony Rocca, Adam Simpson, Simon Prestigiacomo, Blake Caracella, Lance Whitnall, Daniel Harford, Rhys Shaw, Nick Stevens and Gary Moorcroft would enjoy fi ne careers.

When he stepped aside as a coach, after an extraordinary 785 games, Burns remained involved in the game. He would be chairman of selectors for Vic Metro for

four seasons and then team manager for a further two.

But, his football involvement didn’t stop there. Burns co-ordinated the AFL player appearances around Victoria, organised the country component and oversaw the metropolitan one.

He also ran Level 1 coaching courses for teachers and university students. He held both those posts up until his retirement.

AFL Victoria General Manager Grant Williams said Victorian football appreciated Burns’ long term commitment to growing the game of football in the State.

Williams said Burns had nurtured so many young players who had grown and developed into fi ne footballers and ambassadors for the game.

Given such a distinguished and impressive career back drop it’s understandable when Burns defers nominating a sole career highlight.

“It’s hard to say one thing,” Burns said.

“Coaching wise the 1986 Collingwood Under 19s premiership, the four fl ags with the Knights; and then coaching Vic Metro to the national Championship were all outstanding memories.”

While there was consternation at the time the AFL Under 19s was dismantled, Burns said he had been running a development program at Collingwood so the transition to the TAC Cup proved seamless.

Burns said he had not been interested in winning premierships at Collingwood, more so preparing players to advance to the AFL.

“I’ve been a very lucky bloke that I have been involved in football all my life. It’s one of the joys that I’ve had,” he said.

“To be able to coach for 38 years and coach 785 games is … well, something that I consider myself to be very fortunate.

“Kids keep you young, just being involved with young people is always rewarding.”

Burns decided earlier this year that it was time to retire. He had stepped down late last year as president of the Collingwood past player’s association.

“It’s not that I don’t enjoy the job – I do – but my wife and I have certain plans and the fact is that I’m 72 next birthday and I have to be well enough to do a bit of travelling and things like that,” Burns said.

“I love my football … I’ve been pretty lucky.”

VIC Metro’s dominance of the NAB AFL Under 18 National Championships can be measured in many ways, but the exclamation point was provided when the All Australian team was selected.

After winning all fi ve of its Championship matches including a demolition of Vic Country in the fi nal match - and walking away with the Division One title - Vic Metro had seven players and coach Rohan Welsh named in the All Australian team.

The only thing missing was the Larke Medal, awarded to the best player of the carnival. West Australian Stephen Coniglio was awarded that honour.

Calder Cannons teammates Michael Tallia and Brandon Ellis were named among the All Australian defenders as was North Ballarat’s Brad Crouch.

Oakleigh Chargers pair Dom Tyson and Toby Greene along with Northern Knights Billy Longer and Western Jets Will Hoskin-Elliott were selected in the All Australian midfi eld.

Eastern Ranges Jonathon Patton, the most prolifi c goal kicker of the Championships, and the exciting Dandenong Stingray Lachie Whitfi eld, who is not eligible for

the AFL National Draft this year, were chosen as the All Australian forwards.

Gippsland Power’s Clay Smith was named on the interchange bench.

The All Australian team was selected by AFL National Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan; AIS-AFL Academy High Performance Coach Michael O’Loughlin and recruiting managers Kinnear Beatson (Sydney), Jason Taylor (Collingwood), Simon Dalrymple (Western Bulldogs), Wayne Hughes (Carlton) and Neville Stiibard (Greater Western Sydney).

Sheehan emphasised the team was selected not on potential, but on the form displayed over the duration of the Championship.

VIC METRO put the icing on its title celebrations when they outplayed an injury-struck Vic Country at Etihad Stadium on July 5, posting a 9.16 (70) to 2.10 (22) victory.

It was a win set up along many fronts, but started by the dominance of midfi elders Dom Tyson and Toby Greene, who both fi nished with 29 possessions.

Tyson impressed with his poise, coolness under pressure and high kicking effi ciency while Greene burrowed under packs, won the contested ball and the clearances. Totally different type of players, but both equally effective.

Vic Metro had an abundance of winners: Billy Longer was superb in the ruck; Will Hoskin-Elliott showed plenty of dash and Jackson Paine

played a perfect foil for Patton.

While the match did not rise to any great standards, Vic Metro won all the key performance indicators and was only let down by its poor conversion rate with Patton a chief early culprit.

Vic Country, missing the height of Sam Gordon, did not post its fi rst goal until two minutes before half time. There was no better pointer to the dominance of Vic Metro who had 17 more inside 50s in the fi rst half and it would grow to 23 by the end of the match.

Vic Country’s inability to apply any scoreboard pressure, despite the fantastic effort of Whitfi eld, can be attributed also to the defensive pressure all around the ground.

And, when Vic Country did venture forward they were

repelled repeatedly by Michal Tallia, Brandon Ellis and Mitchell Wooffi ndin.
