As a 39 year-old distance runner with the Cross Coun-

ing Vets’ club who encouraged him to participate in their

events. Thus his debut handicap was in April 1981 at Lake

Ginninderra. Almost all 350 handicaps have have been in the

To date Bryan has won fourteen medals – one gold, three

It’s great to see everyone adapting to the new Run/Walk handicap system with an open mind and enthusiasm. I can relate with the backmarkers that we now do not have to wait as long to start our event and the Frylinkers didn’t have to wait as long for us to finish either! This will be more appealing to new members in the longer term and I acknowledge the efforts of Robbie Costmeyer and his team for working hard to make our events more attractive to members and new-comers. Having Bruce Graham run through the field and take out the Thomas event for the first time in ages is a good sign of opportunity for all.

So too, the refreshed handicap system at the monthly Throws certainly brought dividends for me, who usually as a younger ‘backmarker’ is competitively handicapped throwing the heavier implements. I was surprised to pick up a rare throwing medal for me, and delighted to just pip Suzie for the Gold!

There are some big events coming up for members in the first half of the year: the 2020 AMA Nationals and the AMA Half-Marathon. I am excited to be heading to Brisbane for the Nationals, and wish everyone the best in representing the ACT and our club in doing their personal bests. The Brisbane event is also a great opportunity for us to gather ideas for organising the nationals here in Canberra in 2021.

The AMA half-marathon is a postal event this year, and our distance runners have the opportunity to ‘compete’ against the best interstate athletes for an AMA medal. You can also enter the ACTMA half marathon via postal and add to your tally of completed events, compete for an ACTMA medal or just have a good run. All the details are on our website under the half-marathon tab.

As we approach the pinnacle of our summer and a focus on competing athletes, I would like to take the opportunity to highlight the contribution of our social members. Some social members, continue to volunteer some behind the scenes or attend events even though they are not competing. There contributions are invaluable to the club, and equally important

in keeping people involved and connected with friends. The committee is looking at ways of increasing the benefits of social membership as we see this as a vital part of our club.

Our condolences to Ken Eynon and his family for the loss of Marianne, this sad news was felt through the whole Canberra running community, as Ken and Marianne were also well known in the YMCA runners club. It is times like these that we hope that ACTMA continues to be a club of fellowship and support, as much as it is an opportunity to compete. Yours in running, jumping, throwing and walking

Shane Hutchison President:

STOP PRESS: In the week since I wrote and submitted my report to the Vetrunner, the coronavirus situation has escalated in Australia alarmingly, and many athletics events are cancelled. Sadly, our weekend championships and the National AMA Championships have fallen victim to the virus and are cancelled. I fear by the time you are reading this, so too our March and potentially April events will be cancelled. These decisions to cancel are not taken lightly, but were made in the absolute interests of the health and safety of our club members and volunteers, who we certainly don’t want to see fall victims to the virus. Do you best to stay safe and healthy in the interim, and we will resume our club events as soon as it is safe to do so. See page 22 for full statement

In 1995 Bryan was granted Life Membership and in 2013

he and Trish were joint recipients of the inaugural Stuart Reid

Award. Apart from his involvement with ACT Bryan was also

concerned with the wider veterans’ athletics community. He

was a club delegate to our national association from 1984 to

1998 and was its president for three terms. On four occasions

he was an Australian delegate to the WAVA General Assembly

held in conjunction with the world championships.

Since standing down from club and national administra-

tion Bryan has maintained his interest in the history and tra-

ditions of our sport by writing in Vetrunner and as chair of the

Awards Sub-committee. Since 2005 he has also been a regular

contributor to Vetline, the official magazine of Oceania Masters

Athletics. In 2009 he accepted the challenge of writing the his-

tory of Masters Athletics in Australia on behalf of AMA. Age is

No Barrier was published in 2011 and launched at the national

championships in Brisbane. For his efforts and his role as the

AMA Historian Bryan was awarded an AMA Certificate of

Merit.

Bryan Thomas Please see editor’s note below

"It is said that a club is much, much more than its mem-

bers! This club has some members who form an integral part of

its fabric, and you wonder whether, if they left or died, there

would be a hole, something actually missing.

You will have read elsewhere about the countless facts and

figures that punctuate 39 seasons of Bryan's membership and

leadership of this club. These are very important, in fact 350

handicaps is a milestone only Bryan has achieved. But what is

behind the 350................... probably more numbers: 350 cups of

tea. But with whom did he drink tea 350 times? How many

people did he talk to let alone address as he presented hun-

dreds of tee shirts, or brought us up to date on some important

matter about one of our members? What is the effect of reading

about your exploits in the Vetrunner after your 50th or

100th ........... handicap?! Everybody shares your milestone.

But how does it happen? How does someone know you start-

ed your career on the now disused hospital jetty course a little

more than a millennium (or perhaps better: four decades) ago.

Someone has to keep, file and then access your records....not

the club's records, (the club is never awarded a tee

shirt)............but of course our individual records (with a story).

One could go on. but it is not in my nature! One could write

several pages on Bryan's contribution to the run/

walk handicap;, the throwing handicap;, track and field;, club

history;, championships; domestic and international participa-

tion;, governance; and leadership. It is

hardly surprising that the Vetrunner,

a few editions ago, described Bryan as

the ’Governor‘ of the Local Organising

Committee for the national champion-

ships in Canberra in 2021. When the

erstwhile editor checked this nomen-

clature with the president,

the president asked "is there a prob-

lem with the term?"

In many ways much of Bryan's

leadership has not been as a

'Governor‘ but as a facilitator of lead-

ership within our club.

One brief story about Bryan and lead-

ership. During his presidency of ten +

years, the longest of any of our presi-

dents, the club ran two or three sea-

sons of indoor athletic competitions at

the Canberra Showgrounds (later

called EPIC). After the first couple of

nights Bryan, over supper said "we

are missing something, (cont. p.6)

50 handicap tee shirt (photo; Suzie Gaynor)

After an absence of almost a decade from the monthly

throwing handicaps she returned in 2007 and in July 2011

completed number 100. At the time of earning her ‘100 throws’

T shirt Joan became just the seventh member to have complet-

ed more than a century in each of our monthly handicap pro-

grams.

Joan has run over the difficult Cotter course many times

and even ran the ‘Cotter15’ at 69 years-of-age - possibly the

oldest women to have achieved the feat to that time. In Janu-

ary 2002 in order to celebrate her 70th birthday Joan ran 10km

in Stromlo Forest in 70 minutes.

Joan is one of only two women, the other being Suzanne

Counsel, who have completed all twenty-six annual Women

and Girls Fun Runs from 1989 to 2014.

Bryan Thomas

Linda had always been relatively fit and healthy as she had

long been a regular at a gym as well as being involved in a lo-

cal soccer competition in the late 70s and early 80s. However,

as she was approaching retirement Linda was prodded by hus-

band Alan to have a go in our monthly handicaps as a good

way to help maintain fitness and an opportunity to meet new

like-minded people.

Thus in March 2014 Linda ran her first handicap at

Weston Park. All have been in the Frylink Series in which she

has enjoyed considerable success. To date Linda has won eight

medals – three each of gold and silver and a pair of bronze. In

2017 she was the winner of the Mullins Trophy for finishing

the year nearest the fiftieth percentile and amazingly Alan

won the same trophy for the long course handicap. Two years

later Linda was crowned 2019 Queen of the Mountains for the

Frylink Series. Linda has recently taken on the task of pur-

chasing monthly handicap milestone shirts.

Linda is now a proud member of the first family to com-

plete 750 monthly handicaps. This is her fiftieth, husband Alan

ran number 250 last month and today mother-in-law Joan has

just completed her 300th while father-in-law Al ran exactly150

before he retired from athletics in 2004. Therefore 50 + 250 +

300 + 150 = 750. Congratulations to the Mallory Family!

Reporter; Alice Scott

Although we now have water in our dam at Wamboin and

fairly healthy water tanks we still don’t see the lush green of

Canberra. It was a pleasure driving in to Isaacs on such a

warm and sunny day. The track is easy to find even for those

of us not gifted with a bump of locality, there is excellent

parking for our somewhat reduced numbers; and the delight-

ful open start area, green and surrounded by tall pines must

make it one of the most attractive. In fact the numbers were-

n’t down but were exactly the same as last year’s event.

I had not attended a handicap for some months (being

away at the coast for most of the events), and as usual the

greatest pleasure of the day was meeting up with old friends.

If I thought my attendance was slack, there was former Pres-

ident Neil Boden at his first handicap for 10 years! I thor-

oughly enjoyed my little (it actually felt a bit more than lit-

tle), walk on the 4k track, trying to walk at speed but failing.

However it’s always a pleasure to watch the intrepid 10k

runners sprinting after us and then finishing ahead of us.

Sadly one of our competitors fell due to a medical condi-

tion during the event. She was looked after wonderfully by

our RN and although still receiving treatment I believe she is

making wonderful progress. I’m sure everyone wishes Mar-

garet McSpadden a swift return to full health and all her

friends at the club.

The Thomas Bruce Graham— gold

I haven’t kept up with all of Bruce’s record runs although

I’m assured there are a great many from reading Bryan’s

track and field articles in the Vetrunner. Bruce is certainly

one of our fastest (if not the fastest) in the club, enjoying all

distances, he recently starred in the 800m at the track- from

the time he first joined us in 2007. His next challenge is the

AMA Championships – his 12th consecutive. Good luck

Bruce. I should also mention that Bruce was nursing an inju-

ry and had only just come back before this run. In 2019 his

rate for this event was 3.33 this year he ran 3.37. Not too

much damage from the injury then Bruce!

Ruth Baussman— silver

Ruth was surprised and delighted to receive the Silver

when she had been overtaken by both Bruce Graham and

Paul Archer in a flying finish of their own only to find out

later that Paul had lost his eligibility. Bryan had called her

9th running toward the finish and this gave her a huge speed

boost to the finish line. All this strength just a day after a

35km training run for the Canberra Times Marathon – her

19th. She plans her 20th next year alongside another great

female runner, where they will finish as the first women to

complete their 20th. Her old Marathon mate Cathy Newman

will do her 10th that year having been held back often by in-

juries. Ruth modestly puts her silver down to the handicap-

per (don’t read this Handicap Committee!).

Ken Smith – bronze

Ken relates that it was surprising to him that he enjoyed

this run so much after the little pull up the sharp bit in the

beginning (not the only one to feel that Ken). He received a

boost however from hearing Robbie Costmeyer coming up

behind him and so he pushed on to overtake a couple of other

people in the meantime. Watch out for the heavy footsteps

Robbie!. Ken joined the club in 2000 and has completed 52

handicaps. He spent 6 years organising the Track and Field

program, (he must have gone mad!)and he still takes part in

the sprints and jumps. Advice from Ken to self ‘have to run

more to get fit enough to run more’.

The Frylink Stephen Gray – gold

This was Stephen’s 102nd run and although he had made

second place on one occasion, the gold had always eluded

him, and this was in fact his second placing in 11 years. He

has picked up the Thomas pointscore (not a shabby achieve-

ment), and won the Mullins in 2018. He laughs at himself as

mr. mediocre, but that is all over now with this gold. His late

wife, Nerelle Harrison-Heard had a tally of 8 (he thinks)in

the Frylink, and he has a great number of placings to go to

catch her record. He modestly credits the Handicap Commit-

tee with his success in this event but would really like to get

back to the Thomas series – his favourite event.

Suzie Gaynor – Silver

Suzie joined the club in mid 2017 and had graduated to

Secretary of the Committee in 2019. Suzie ‘joined the club to

run and now she runs the club’. She loves everything about

the club, especially the President who was her side benefit

gained on joining the committee. Suzie runs as a W50 and in

her 17 events so far has been awarded 2 Gold medals. As

well as the handicaps Suzie has ago at everything from

throws to track events. She calls herself a ‘back of the pack’

runner (not noticeably Suzie!). cont. p.6

Toby Bellwood – bronze

Toby rather leapt into fame with his first 7 handicaps,

medalling at his first eligible run and picking up another 3

subsequently. Not wishing to state the obvious Toby but as

you are about to extend the handicappers beyond the num-

bers attending, you might start training up for the Thomas to

give yourself a bit more of a challenge. Toby runs as an M40

and has a long way (and distance) to go as a runner.

The Waddell John Suiter – gold

‘My first Gold Medal for the year’ said John with tongue

firmly in the cheek but not without good reason. John has a

huge record as a runner within the Vets/Masters, running

track,,long distances up to marathons and before that as a

young runner, rogainer etc. So as with the inevitability of age,

came the Waddell, an event he has also starred at. It must be

nice to be still able to win gold medals on ability not on age,

as only four people in the whole event walked at a faster rate

than John. Beat that at M90.

Graeme Small – Silver

‘Beaten by an M90’ he gasps as he staggers over the finish

line. Well – weren’t we all. Graeme joined the club over 25

years ago and has run/walked 250 handicaps. His handicap

history (as he has always been a distance runner) starts with

Thomas, moves along to Frylink as his legs seemed to get

shorter and then to Waddell as so many of us do. He prefers

the bush tracks and no doubt felt taken back to our Stromlo

Tuesday runs before the 2003 fires.

Michelle Hillard – bronze

Our Michelle is not too shabby at the walking handicaps.

In two age groups W50 and now W55 acquiring medals in her

first 28 events, 2 bronze and 3 gold. She was grouped right at

the back of the walkers so will definitely be walking on her

own soon!

Finally thank you to all the volunteers: Carol Baird who

manages to buy quality fruit that nobody else can find and

rewarded the competitors with ‘really good’ biscuits as I over-

heard: and the recorders who have to find all the finishers

who have wandered off to gasp, stretch, or catch a cup of cof-

fee. And Maryanne Busteed RN who took control of our in-

jured runner. It’s a delightful course and surprising that it

has taken so long to revive it.

we really need a hurdle race!" Bearing in mind we were run-

ning on floor boards, most of us went home thinking "he is

dreaming". The next night of competition Will Foster called

Bryan over to a corner of the indoor arena where Will had set

up five homemade wooden hurdles. Will explained that he had

built them in such a way that the balance of the hurdles

would allow the athlete, even touching a hurdle to continue

running without falling. That is, on contact the hurdles would

fall over. By the following week 'short hurdles’ were added to

the program.

During his presidency, the club also produced its first five-

year management plan; won a grant to employ an Administra-

tion Officer; established several sub-committees to develop

initiatives to grow the club; established many of the awards

which are now traditions within our club; and oversaw consid-

erable harmony in the club. Bryan is still the most prolific

contributor to Vetrunner, and without doubt, there may have

been some months in which the publication would not have

been issued except for his contributions.”

Throwing Handicap report shot and discus 22nd Feb 2020

Reporter; John Reynolds

Twenty four contestants took part in the first monthly

throwing handicap for 2020 with nine records falling under

ideal weather conditions. Club president Shane Hutchison

took out the handicap event, scoring by a margin of eighty five

centimetres over Suzie Gaynor. Jan Banens won the bronze

medal with her total score fifty seven centimetres behind Gay-

nor.

Bob Banens dominated the mens throwing events with

the longest distances in the discus (32.83), shot (9.96), super

weight (8.13) & the 45lb weight (6.20). Jayne Hardy was also

dominant in the womens events. She led all throwers with her

best throws in the discus (27.78), shot (8.98), super weight

(8.70) & the 45 lb weight (4.09).

A highlight of the day was the breaking of nine records in

the heavy weight events. Seven ACT records, one Australian

& one equal Australian record fell in the super weight & 45lb

weight throw events. In the super weight throw Jayne Hardy

added thirty eight centimetres to the Australian record in the

W55 age group with her best mark of 8.70. Ray Green

equalled the M75 Australian record with his toss of 7.27 in

the same event. Both Hardy & Green’s throws were also ACT

records. In the W60 age group Sharon Gibbins threw 8.10 to

break the previous ACT record by thirty five centimetres.

While Kevin Blewitt established a new mark of 7.71 in the

M80 division.

In the 45lb weight throw ACT records fell to Bob Banens

M70 (6.20), Ray Green M75 (5.57) & Sharon Gibbins W60

(2.71) No performance was deemed worthy of an Oscar so

none was awarded for the month. The winner of this months

wine was Suzie Gaynor. The shot put & discus are the events

to be contested on April 25th with the heavy weight events

being the super weight & the 100 lb.

We have quite a few members disappointed that the

championships in Brisbane at Easter habe been called off.

Following the death of Life Member Stuart Reid in Octo-

ber 2012 the club established a special commemorative award

in recognition of Stuart’s many outstanding contributions to

our club and his accomplishments as a talented distance run-

ner over more than three decades.

Thus the Stuart Reid Commemorative Award was

born. It is presented annually at the AGM “to a member who

has made a major contribution to ACTMA”.

This prestigious award was designed to recognise a mem-

ber who has contributed much to the overall success of the

club. It is a distinctly different club-person award to the En-

couragement Award (run/walk handicaps), Clohessy Trophy

(throwing handicaps) and Johnson Trophy (track and field) as

it is not associated with any of our three major athletic com-

petitions. Perhaps only the granting of Life Membership, for

outstanding contributions over an extended period of time,

ranks above this award in prestige.

For the last seven years we have appreciated Stuart’s

daughter Anne being able to attend our AGM to present the

magnificent trophy and keepsakes to the recipients.

In 2013 the inaugural recipients of the Stuart Reid Com-

memorative Award were Bryan and Trish Thomas. Since

then the award has been presented to - Jim White in 2014,

Robert and Rosemary Parker 2015, Dave Mackenzie 2016, Val

Chesterton in 2017, Jayne Hardy 2018 while last year Janice

Banens was the worthy recipient. (See photo below with Stu-

art Reid’s daughter and grand daughter)

Who deserves to be the eighth recipient of this special

award? Who do you think should be considered? Who has

made a major contribution to the success of our club? Please

submit your nomination by email or writing to Bryan Thom-

as, chair of the Awards Sub-committee, before Friday April 3.

13/02/20 On a warm windy evening Michael Snare M45 got us off to a quick

start with a 13.75 100m. Brian Kingston M65 in one of his early come back

runs stopped the clock at 16.93. Raelene Campbell W45 had the best of the

women in 15.79. and Jenny Rayner W70 did well with 22.42. In the Boag series

(200m), Damian Rutledge M50 stole the show with a rating of 88.1% with his

25.97 win. Phil White M65 continued his comeback form with a 31.41. Raelene

Campbell made it a double with her 32.41. Cory Collins W80 fresh from her

great Higgins performance a week earlier logged 47.24 for a rating of 87%. Pe-

ter Brown M55 rated 2:30.53 to take the 800m in front of M70 John Lamb

2:40.83. Kathy Sims W65 had the better of Helen Larmour W60 by six seconds

in 3: 32.63. Newcomer Margaret Pentony W70 ran 4:53.59. Brand new records

officer Jacob Grooby M30 took the 3000m by more than 2.5m over Nigel Eng-

land in 9:44.24. Kathy Sims took the women’s distance double from Sue Archer

90.1% with a jump of 7.68m and John Lamb M70 with 8.12. Michael Snare

M45 (who won the 100m) managed one of those rare T&F doubles when he

sent the spear on a journey of 34.05m. Alex Lloyd W60, preparing for the AMA

in Brisbane, took the women’s edition in 22.54. Ricard Meiring M45 had a

booming hammer of 49.89m while Jayne hardy W55 took the honours for the

women with 33.69. Rising M55 throwing star Peter Baker threw furthest in

the discus with 31.28. Shenevelle Dickson W35 took the women’s with 28.46

Jugovic W55 won the 2000m race walk in 10:49.40. Bryan Thomas, just three

days away from his 350th run walk handicap took the fitness division in

14:22.05. New club member Gurpreet Badwal M45 (with daughter doing pho-

tography) took the 60m in 8.05 and Marlene Reid W65 the women’s in 10.01

with a rating of 92.4 . Gurpreet made it a double with a convincing win in the

200m in 26.24. David Clarke M60 took men’s edition of the Club’s coveted mile

race in 6:00.61. Kathy Sims W65, the women's, in 7:37.10 with a very good rat-

ing of 84.8%. Ken Smith M60 took the men’s triple with a hop, step and a jump

of 8.56. Margaret Taylor improving on last week’s result leapt to an ACT and

Australian record of 7.89 rating 92.6 with a wind reading of nil. The club’s

hammer championships went to Meiring, White, Jordon, Macnicol, Banens,

and Donohue and in the women's to Dickson, Gaynor, Hardy, England and

Banens. The best men’s throw was Ricard Meiring’s 51.65 and in the women’s

Jayne Hardy’s 36.99. Steve Jordon took the javelin with 30.53 and Jayne Har-

dy in 22.86. Opposite picture; Leigh Harlow M40 leading Shane Hutchison M45

AMA Champs Canberra 2021: Mission “to conduct an efficient, friendly and successful championship”.

PLANNING FOR 2021 The 2013 AMA Championships held in Canberra were a

great success as were the four previous championships our

ACTVAC organised – in 1984, 1991, 1999 and 2006. Now it is

our time again to have the responsibility for organising and

conducting the 2021 48th AMA Championships to be held at

the AIS Track and Stromlo Park from Friday 5 to Monday 8

March next year.

We have set up a Local Organising Committee (LOC) that

will do its best to put on a successful four day carnival of ath-

letics for visiting Masters athletes from around Australia,

some from overseas and of course our own members.

Our LOC consists of the following Team Leaders with an

outline of their responsibilities and a resume of the experience

in local and national athletics. Each team leader will require

the assistance of others and some have already been identi-

fied. But as we move closer to the championships more mem-

bers and friends will be called upon to assist.

On Sat 29 February, the Corroboree Little Athlet-

ics Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a

function at the Dickson Playing Fields and John

Hunt (picture opposite) was awarded ‘Legend’

status (the first ever awarded!) having been in-

volved with the club for 31 years in a myriad of

roles including President, Vice President, Com-

mittee Member and Club Coach, and he’s still

involved in a coaching capacity… a remarkable

commitment to our young athletes.

I should also add that Lauren (Boden), together

with Paralympic athlete Jayden Sawyer, were

recognised as the first two inductees into Corrob-

oree’s ‘Hall of Fame’ at the function.

(Kerry and I, and our two children, spent a won-

derful 10 years at Corroboree Little A’s from 1993

-2003 and it’s great to see the club going strong

with over 330 members!)

(Editor’s note; this is a brief abstract of a larger paper

which will be published in full in the May Vetrunner.)

Runners Gut – “The Trots”

Urgency to find a bathroom can ruin a perfectly good train-

ing session. Gastrointestinal upset can range from a grum-

bling sensation, pain in the stomach or bloating but for some,

toilets must be publicly accessible at regular intervals. Not

only is this issue disruptive to training and competition but

can create anxiety when heading out on a run.

Runners are more likely to experience “the trots” than oth-

er athletes, also those prone to nervous anxiety, elite athletes

and younger athletes are all at high risk of runner`s gut.

Causes of runner`s gut could be several factor including

dehydration, highly concentrated carbohydrate drinks, re-

duced blood flow to the gut, timing of the last meal before ex-

ercise and type of foods eaten before exercise. As there are

many factors that could be a trigger, working with an Accred-

ited Sports Dietitian to help determine which possible triggers

may be the cause of your runner`s gut and plan individualised

strategies to help avoid them.

Damian Rutledge M50 who had another great run with his 12.58

for an event high rating of 89%. In the women’s edition a very

close finish ensued with a foot between Raelene Campbell M45 in

14.98 and Sue Bourke W60 in 15.02 with a rating of 90.2. Maire-

ad Thomas, a new member in 23.51. Peter Baker M55, in scintil-

lating form on the track and in the field, won the 400m in 1:10.25.

Sue Bourke, already back to her best was outright second in 1:16.

53. Peter Brown M55 had done best when the judge called a halt

in the 1500m in 5:07. 92. Paul Archer, now an M70 got home in 7:

21.02. Again Jacob Grooby M30 was first out and first home in

9:16.07, 28 seconds better than a fortnight ago. It is sobering to

think that the ACT record is 8:40.52 by Scott McTaggart at the

AIS in October 2008. Craig Wurtz’s 13:47.52 showed continuing

good form. John Lamb M70 took the ACT record with a 50.06 in

the 300m hurdles. And again Gurpreet Badwal M45 took a double

with a 5.32 long jump (he later managed third with 9.21 with the

big yellow shot). Raelene Campbell also took a double with her

outright second in the long jump with 4,12. Steve Jordon M55

climbed 2.25m with his pole vault stick and Ken Smith M60 an

impressive 2.20m. Exciting competition with Bob Banens sending

the 4kg white shot out to 9.81m and Steve Jordon M55 sending

his 6kg green shot out to 9.77m. Shenevelle Dickson W35 com-

fortably took the women’s division with 9.13m. Maureen Rossiter

W65 put 5.65m between her and the landed shot. The weight

throw saw close finishes in both divisions; with Chris White M45

reaching 16.50m and Ricard Meiring M45 out to 16.34. Jayne

Hardy W55 had 31cm to spare from Shenevelle’s 11.00m throw.

5/03/20 Cancelled because of rain

12/03/20 After 37.6 mm of rain last week athletes arrived to

balmy conditions with a slight nor easterly. Two competitors en-

gaged in the championship 5000m walk; Kate Black taking gold

in the W50 division in 32:25.32 and Ann Staunton-Jugovic in the

W55s with 28:41.55. Craig Edwards had the best time in the

400m with 1:12.42 and Sue Bourke W60 had the best rating with

85.7% for her 1:14.50. Cory Collins W80 got home in 1:59.87.

Sue Archer W70 got the gong in the 5000m fitness walk with

35:40.66. In a serious M45 100m race David Austin lowered Gur-

preet Badwal’s colours for the first time with a 12.39 to 12.66

time difference. David Clarke M60, in brilliant form this season,

won the 1500m in 5:33.43, Sue Archer W70 the women’s in

7:25.55. The 10,000 championship winners were; Hutchison, Gra-

ham, England, Clarke (David), Costmeyer, Thomas and Lewis.

Sue Archer, the only woman took the W70 gold medal.

In the pole vault, Steve Jordon M55 improved five cm from last

time with 2.30m and Ken Smith M60 held his own with a con-

sistent 2.20m. Without Ricard Meiring in the competition Chris

White dominated the weight with a throw of 16.76m, Jan Banens

W75 had 11.29m with a rating of 100.6%!. In the shot Steve Jor-

don, M55, had a longer put than Robert Banens, M70, by just

15cm. Shenevelle Dickson W35 took the women’s edition with

9.26.

With one competition to go, 26/03, many awards are on a knife’s

edge; Shane Hutchison has a narrow lead in the Adler, John

Lamb and Margaret Taylor look assured in the Boag. Marlene

Reid was only two points in front of Margaret Taylor in the Dan-

iels. Angel Marina needs to only get around his 5th event to win

the Daniels. Sue Archer is nicely in front in the Pennington, Peter

Baker in the Perry and Margaret Taylor in the Anthony. The

men’s division is closer with Antoni Podolak three points in front

of Peter Baker.

and throwing handicaps and Track & Field meets.

Due by: Saturday 11th April 2020

All copy and queries for the April edition to the editor

at: [email protected] Late submissions may

only be accepted if space allows.

Articles

All reports, articles and stories submitted for inclusion

in Vetrunner should be created in Word, in Century School-

book 9pt. font. I welcome member’s contribution which is

of an athletic theme, or tells of that member achieving an

important milestone or award, or just has a story to tell

that relates to a person’s background outside of athletics.

These include photographs and illustrations where possible

or appropriate. Minor editing may be undertaken. Letters

to the editor are welcome. It is important that the club has

a vehicle for receiving and answering constructive factual

criticism and comments.

Photos

When taking photos of award ceremonies, please ensure

that the awardees are looking in your direction and the

background and foreground of the photo do not detract

from the importance of the moment. Please ask the sub-

jects if they would mind removing their sunglasses. All in

all, check your surroundings before clicking. Action photos

are particularly welcome. Photos may be cropped where

appropriate. Please ensure photos are sharp and sent as

large photos. Small or blurry photos are unusable.

What a volatile situation we find ourselves in with can-

cellation of all ACTMA events to the end of April. The main

information is on p.22. Pages 6, 11, 13, 18 and 21 have been

annotated with the events that have been cancelled. This

edition covers Bryan Thomas’s 350 handicap pp. 1, 4 and 6,

notice for the AGM on p. 10, all the records on p.12 and Jim

White’s 21st rendition of the Sprint marathon on p.23.

I wish to thank all our generous contributors espe-

cially Bryan Thomas for his many contributions, Suzie

Gaynor for her photos from all venues, John Kennedy’s pho-

tos at the run/walk handicap. Also thanks to our ever relia-

ble proof readers, Dave Mackenzie and Cory Collins. We

appreciate our regular Throws reporter; John Reynolds and

photos from Suzie Gaynor and Jan Banens. We all greatly

appreciate the Geoff Barker inspired team of run/walk

handicap reporters, on this occasion the Alice Scott. Wel-

come back Alice.

As a general rule I will publish material that is pub-

licly acknowledged. Articles submitted to Vetrunner but

not published are usually the result of page limitations,

and may be included in the following edition of Vetrunner.

Constructive comment is welcome and should be addressed

to the editor at: [email protected]

My volunteering as an ‘hospitalero’ in Miraz is post-

poned to next year. So don’t need a guest editor for the June

Vetrunner, but would still appreciate a guest editor for the

next edition, The work will be done in the first fortnight of

April. I will be available in early April to assist. It is a good

edition for the new guest editor to start on as there will be

no athletics to report on.

The guest editor and I would appreciate your stories,

poems, songs and dance routines for the May Vetrunner.

Please be imaginative as you have three weeks (11 April) to

pen/photograph your creations. Please contact us below.

Ten enthusiastic throwers took part in the Throws

Pentathlon championship, enjoying great weather conditions

in contrast to last month’s wet & cold conditions. The compe-

tition was spread over eight age groups with one competitor

from NSW taking part. Ray Green led all male throwers on

the day with his total score of 3351 points. John Reynolds

was the best of the remaining five men with his total of 2786.

Among the women Jeanette Williamson had the leading total

of 3890 points followed by Jan Banens on 3589. Although no

records fell in the throws pentathlon some good performances

were recorded. Ray Green led the hammer throwers with

31.22, visitor Morgan Clifford had the best shot & javelin

throws with distances of 10.15 & 32.85 respectively. Charles

Bastecky was the best of the discus throwers with 32.03

while Ray Green’s 12.51 topped the weight throws. The indi-

vidual leaders in the women’s events was shared between

Shenevelle Dickson having the leading marks in three events

& Jan Banens in the remaining two. Despite not leading any

of the throwing events Jeanette Williamson proved her con-

sistency by topping the overall totals.

An additional event the weight for distance was

held & resulted in three ACT records being set. Six competi-

tors took part. Bob Banens’s throw of 16.60 in the M70 age

division added sixteen centimetres to the previous record.

Two new marks were established. Lee Redman set a new

M35 mark with his toss of 7.83. In the W75 age group Jean-

ette Williamson also set a new mark throwing 12.11. Compet-

itors throw a weight which is one below their normal weight

throw weight. The implement is thrown one handed & alt-

hough there are various styles most favour a discus turn.

Results below.

Historian: Bryan Thomas

40 YEARS AGO (April 1980).

We had fifty-three members (44 men and 9 women) at the

AGM. Peter Frylink, Mike Adler, Ken Daniels and Terry Mun-

ro were re-elected president, vice president, secretary and

treasurer respectively. The committee consisted of Roger Ab-

bott, Nigel Crew, Brian Paxman, Pat Robinson and Lucille

Warth.

Thirteen Canberrans made up the first team to represent

the club at a national carnival when they travelled to Adelaide

for the Australian Veterans’ Championships. Our trail blazers

were – John Bakker M40, Arthur Brown M40, Ken Daniels

M40 (bronze in 110m and 400m hurdles); Wendy Davidson

W35 silver in XC; Peter Frylink M45, Robin Kennedy W35,

Bob Mee M40 gold in both 3,000m and 5,000m walks; Terry

Munro M40, Brian Paxman M50 (silver in 800m, bronze in

400m and 1500m); Pat Robinson M40, Nigel Spurling M35,

Jonne Yabsley W35 (silver in 5000m, bronze in 1500m,

10,000m, and XC) and Roy Yeeles M40.

Peter Kallio was first Vet and twelfth outright in the

Canberra Marathon. Wendy Davidson was 15th in the Wom-

en’s Avon Marathon in Sydney in a time of 3:27.

An 8km handicap run starting and finishing at Ken Dan-

iels’ home in Holder attracted sixteen runners. Roger Abbott

was the winner finishing in front of Terry Munro and Tony

Hammett.

30 YEARS AGO (April 1990).

ACT champions in the Canberra Marathon were – M35

John Neil 2:54, M40 Phil Garvin 2:29, M45 Alan Anderson

3:17, M50 Brian Austin 2:54, M55 Harold Kemp 3:29, M60

John Suiter 3:46, M65 Reg Mullins 3:38 (ACT Record), W30

Carol Harding 3:25, W35 Diana Wright 4:46 and W40 Chris

Sweeting 3:24.

A large team of seventy participated in the Australian

Championships in Melbourne. Canberra returned with 34

gold, 43 silver and 32 bronze medals as well as thirty-four new

ACT Records. Gordon Boag M70 and Margaret Taylor W40

were our most outstanding performers.

The annual Women’s and Girls Fun Run had 910 finish-

ers. Veterans’ age winners were – W40 Mary Ann Busteed,

W45 Beth Peedom, W50 Suzanne Counsel, W55 Joan Mallory

and W60 Juani O’Reilly.

Dunrossil Drive was the venue for the 9.5km handicap

which had a record field of 137. Sue Kesson won from Jenny

May and Terry Levings. Gwen Vines and Colin Bridge earned

their 50 run T shirts.

20 YEARS AGO (April 2000).

Despite bitterly cold and damp conditions at this year’s

Australian Championships in Hobart a happy but unusual

result for the twenty ACT athletes was that all returned with

at least one medal. The ACT scored a rare double, winning

both the men’s and women’s ‘Champion of Champions’ sprints;

M35 Jeff King won the men’s race from the back while W45

Marlene Reid flashed home the winner in the women’s event.

ARs were set by Bob Banens M50 javelin 57.83m, Jayne Hardy

W35 heavy weight 12.35m and Margaret Taylor W50 triple

jump 10.42m. Competing in the last event on the program,

Margaret attracted an interested spectator gallery as each of

her attempts were agonizingly close to the current World Rec-

ord.

Just seven months after setting an AR for the 24 hour

walk, Carol Baird did it again! This time she circled the Co-

burg Track 430 times for a total of 172.327km. Carol now held

ARs for endurance track walking for 50mile, 100km, 100 miles

and 24 hours.

The run/walk handicap was held at Deek Forest Park in

Stromlo Forest. 143 ran the 6km Jogalong loop won by Will

Foster from Allan Green and John Woodall. 51 ran the 4km

short course won by John Burns from Cindy Stewart and Da-

vid Meyers. Kerry Boden won gold in the Waddell finishing

ahead of Andrina Norden and Carmen Carlon. Alan Williams

became the tenth recipient of the ‘150 handicaps’ T shirt and

David Hall completed his fiftieth.

Beautiful autumn weather brought out twenty-nine par-

ticipants in this month’s throwing handicap in shot put and

discus. Kevin Blewitt won the trophy from Jayne Hardy and

Mary Wahren (see photo below).

10 YEARS AGO (April 2010).

Perth was the venue for the 38th AMA Championships

and the 527 participants made it the largest of the six nation-

als that had been held in WA. One of the features of the cham-

pionships was the magnificent new WA Athletics Stadium.

What an improvement on the old Perry Lakes Stadium built

for the 1962 Commonwealth Games! Thirty-one members

made the long trip across the Nullarbor to participate. At the

Awards Dinner Margaret Taylor was adjudged AMA champion

jumper for the sixth occasion having previously won the award

in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2009.

The run/walk handicap was at West Stromlo. The most

important man at our handicaps, Brian MacLachlan, was una-

ble to deliver the port-a-loo because of an accident on the way.

Brian was OK but his car and the loo suffered damage. The

long course was won by Michael Gardner from Jennie Gilchrist

and David Webster. Grahame Delaney won gold in the Frylink

ahead of Claire Perry and John Busteed. The Waddell was

won by Anne McNeill from Will Foster and Terry Munro. Ma-

ree Coldrick and Alan Duus completed their 150th handicaps

while Margaret McSpadden and Bruce Wight their century.

Claire Perry enjoyed a silver weekend when she finished

runner-up in both the monthly throwing and running handi-

caps as well as being presented with the ‘Oscar’. This month’s

throwing handicap, incorporating shot put and discus, was

won by Tanya Colyer from Claire Perry and Bryan Thomas.

The Boards of Little Athletics ACT (LAACT) and Athletics ACT (AACT) and the Main Committee of ACT Masters

Athletics (ACTMA) are united in suspending all athletics competitions and events during March and April 2020, and

strongly recommend others do the same due to concerns around the spread of COVID-19.

This applies to all athletics competitions in the ACT and surrounding regions, including cross-country, track and

field, and road events, as well as organised activities of training groups and large meetings.

This announcement aligns with the decisions made by both Athletics Australia and Little Athletics Australia to

stop all athletics competition and events until 1 May 2020. These decisions have been supported by the state-based

Athletics Associations.

The community’s health and well-being is our primary concern. In the ACT and region, the athletics community

has an obligation to assist in slowing the peak of the pandemic and to minimise the workload of our health care pro-

fessionals, many of whom are likely colleagues and fellow athletes.

Little Athletics ACT (LAACT), Athletics ACT (AACT) and ACT Masters Athletics acknowledge the uncertainty of

the current situation and the rapidly changing advice as the situation evolves. As such, we continue to monitor, as-

sess the risk to our members, and act accordingly, in response to statements and policies enacted by both Federal

and State Health authorities, and national athletics bodies.

Looking after yourself

During this time of no competition or events, we encourage athletics clubs in the ACT and surrounds, club mem-

bers, athletes, coaches and officials to look after themselves by continuing to exercise. The weather in autumn is

great. If you are well and practicing social distancing, there is no reason why you can’t get outdoors to exercise or

train on the many sporting ovals and reserves in the Bush Capital.

Where individuals do choose to gather for unorganised or unofficial training, we encourage members to follow the

clear advice of keeping groups to a minimum and keeping your distance. If any member is unwell they should not

participate in any level of activity with other members of the Athletics family. Please practice appropriate hygiene

measures and implement self-exclusion if displaying flu-like symptoms.

Where to find out more information

Further advice on the Coronavirus COVID-19 is best sourced from the Australian Government Department of

Health (www.health.gov.au) or for general advice, call the Australian Government's Coronavirus Health Infor-

mation Line on 1800 020 080.

Letter to the editor

THANK YOU JIM – YOU HAVE DONE IT AGAIN and AGAIN and EVEN IN THE RAIN!

I have written a similar letter every February for many years. But it must be said again that our members owe Jim

White a great deal of thanks for continuing to organise and promote one of our iconic annual events.

On a rainy Sunday morning 9 February Jim White once again organised another successful Sprint Marathon Relay

(SMR). All 36 runners, including both regulars and novices of this unique relay, and two hard working helpers enjoyed being part

of our 36th ACTMA SMR. In 1999 Jim volunteered to organise the event and has done a wonderful job every year since so this is

his twenty-first. For several weeks prior to the event Jim puts a lot of effort in promoting the event, encouraging people to partici-

pate and arranging teams of six so they are theoretically equal. The last few days and nights are always a worrying time for Jim

as he agonises over any late withdrawals because it upsets his team selections. However everyone turned up on a morning that

looked like heavy rain might force the cancellation of the relay. Jim must have miscalculated as he now had one too many willing

participants. So Jim gave up his own spot in a team so everybody else could be part of the event.

This was the fifth occasion the SMR had been conducted in the Fadden Pines area. The move from Dunrossil Drive has

proven successful as the current course is free of cyclists and all relay change areas are in shade – not that it was an issue this

year but the trees did provide a liitle shelter. By 5am on Sunday morning Jim arrived at the start/finish area to begin marking

the course with hundreds of plastic cones and setting up the change-over areas with signage, containers of drinking water, cups

and garbage bags. All participants were appreciative of Jim’s efforts. And he does this every year!

On behalf of all who enjoyed this year’s SMR – Thanks Jim for another enjoyable and unique relay.

Bryan Thomas

Note: This was the 36th SMR and the 21st Jim has been organiser. Jim has now participated in 27 - one more than Bryan Thomas but due to the unusual

circumstances of Jim’s withdrawal perhaps he should get credited for having run in this year’s event. Other veterans of the SMR who participated this year were –

Gary Bowen completing his sixteenth relay, Cathy Montalto, Roger Abbott and John Kennedy 14 each, Peter Clarke 12, Mary Ann Busteed 10 while Caroline

Campbell, David Clark and Jeff Grey ran their ninth.

Since the birth of the relay in 1984 143 persons have been a member of at least one winning team. Jim has enjoyed being on the winning team more than any-

one – he has been part of the victorious sextet on five occasions – one more than Elle Knight, Nadine Morrison and Bernie Rogers while twelve persons have been on

a winning team three times. Because Isaac Muscat was captain of this year’s winning team he now has the impressive record of three wins from four participations.

John Kennedy also moved up to the list of having enjoyed three wins while Chris Gammon joined twenty-one others who can boast having two winning trophies.

Bryan Thomas and Mary Ann Busteed were the only competitors this year who had also participated in the inaugural relay in 1984 but nowadays both are the

slowest in their team and can only dream of the days when they team leaders. Incidentally, on that very hot November morning in Stromlo Forest thirty-six years

ago both Mary Ann and Bryan were the number two runners in their respective teams thus each time they received the baton it was a match race. As both were the

tail runner for their team this year they enjoyed a similar contest.

Reporter Jim White

With a lot of runners injured and a few runners going

on holidays I could only manage six teams (there were nine

teams last year). But having six teams made it easy for me to

handicap them. The weather forecast for the Sunday was rain;

though I had packed the car on Saturday night for fine weath-

er. I was up at 4.30am Sunday morning to a light drizzle, so

thought this could still be on. So down to the servo for ice to

keep the drinks cold! Then off to Fadden Pines to set up the

course, by this time the rain was a light drizzle and things were

looking up. However I still thought I should put up the tent for

Michelle and Lorna to lap score out of the rain. So off to Robbie

Costmeyer’s place for a tent. When I got back to set it up the

tent had no pole, so back to Robbie’s place again (not too far

away) fo0r another tent. Trying to put the tent up I nearly got

blown away, just in time Jeff Grey arrived early and saved the

day.

Amazingly all 36 runners and I turned up in poor con-

ditions and all runners were willing to run. By accident had left

Jeff McKenzie out of the teams, so I put him in in my place as

he runs at the same pace as I do. In twenty years of organizing

this event it was the first time I left someone out……..’another

senior’s moment’

After instructions the event started on time. When the

runners came round at the end of the first lap (about 7k) there

was only about 200m between first and last. There was a great

battle between the first two teams silver and blue; finally fin-

ishing only 86 secs apart after nearly three hours of running.

The third (red) and fourth (green) teams were only three sec-

onds apart and fifth (white) and sixth (gold) were only 43 sec-

onds apart. By the time we had the presentations the rain had

stopped and as the photos show everybody said it was a suc-

cessful event and they enjoyed the rainy conditions!!!

I would like to thank Michelle and Lorna again for

their time keeping and taking entries at the start. Big thanks

to Ruth England for the photography again also. A big thanks

to Jeff Grey for helping with the tent and Bryan Thomas for

picking up the cones. Thanks to all runners who helped pack up

at the finish. It makes life so much easier. It was enjoyable just

watching the race and not running (Editor’s note; Jim we don’t

believe you!) Results are below.
